The UK’s military presence in Kenya is its largest in Africa, and it remains the largest European investor. While Kenya is nominally independent, the continued abuses by the UK and protection by the local elite indicate true freedom has yet to be experienced by the Kenyan people.

The UK government has just announced that they will be relinquishing their last colony in Africa. The Chagos Islands will be handed over to Mauritius in a deal that will still allow the joint US-UK military base to continue occupying one of the islands.
The Chagossian people were forcibly expelled from their land in 1968. The British state leased one of the islands to the US military and transferred the entire population to surrounding countries. Those who were displaced have never been able to return.
The conservative opposition in the UK oppose the move and demand that the state retain full colonial control over the islands. The base has been used in all recent UK and US-led wars, including the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street in 1936. It marks the historic moment in which the British Union of Fascists were stopped in their tracks by socialists, communists, trade unionists, and the local Jewish community. The epic street battle stopped the fascists from marching through East London.
Despite having police protection, the fascists were forced out of the East End and the battle sparked the downfall of their movement in Britain. It represents a rare moment of grassroots unity on the left that turned “they shall not pass” from a slogan into reality.
