The acquittal of the British police officer who fatally shot 24-year-old Black man Chris Kaba in 2022 highlights the deeply rooted racism within the UK’s police and justice system. Officers like Martyn Blake are once again allowed to escape accountability for murder driven by racism.
🟡 redstreamnet:7/armed-and-dangerous-britain%E2%80%99s-racist:2">Watch our debut documentary about the killing of Chris Kaba and racism in the UK from last year.
The British police officer who killed Chris Kaba, a 24-year-old Black man and unarmed father-to-be, has been acquitted of all charges. Martyn Blake shot Kaba in the head in 2022, triggering mass protests at the time from anti-racist movements and other communities who’ve long been victims of racist police violence.
Since 1990, a staggering 1,869 individuals have lost their lives while in UK police custody or following interactions with the police. Only one police officer has been convicted since then. British police are four times more likely to use force against Black individuals, who are also seven times more likely to die after police restraint.
🟡 In 2023, red. media published a documentary speaking to Chris Kaba’s family. We explored the issues of racist police brutality in the UK and how it impacts the country’s Black community. Watch here.
Violent protests erupted at the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, clashing with riot police as Molotov cocktails and improvised explosives filled the air. The unrest was in response to the ongoing international COP16 summit hosted in the country. More radical voices are opposing the annual UN-sponsored climate change summit for failing to combat the capitalist-fueled climate crisis that keeps pushing the planet toward disaster.

Nigerian police violently suppressed protests commemorating the fourth anniversary of the anti-SARS movement. The 2020 uprising brought an end to the fascist police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad. At least 22 people were arrested by police who used teargas and fired gunshots.
Protesters gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, where the Nigerian military shot dead 12 unarmed protesters in 2020. The Nigerian government engaged in a systematic cover-up of the massacre, freezing protest leaders’ bank accounts and fining news outlets that covered it.
SARS was well-known in Nigeria for torturing, raping, and executing people with impunity. A powerful uprising led by the youth shook the country to the core and forced the elite to concede. During the entirety of the End SARS movement, at least 56 people were killed.

Are “North Korean troops in Ukraine”? The claim of 12,000 troops from the DPRK being sent to fight for Russia in Ukraine has been making headlines throughout the weekend.
The claim initially came from the Republic of Korea’s (ROK) National Intelligence Service. The Ukrainian government quickly followed. Both have put forth rather questionable “evidence.”
Surprisingly, both NATO and the US failed to confirm the reports of DPRK citizens actively serving as soldiers in Russia’s war effort.
Even though the DPRK’s involvement in Ukraine remains unclear, DPRK-Russia relations have undoubtedly seen breakthroughs in recent years. In June, the two nations signed their first mutual defense pact, agreeing to provide mutual assistance if either is attacked.
The two of the most heavily sanctioned nations continue to grow closer. Amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, the outlines of what many call a “new Cold War” are becoming increasingly evident.

red. media reporters in Gaza obtained exclusive footage from Jabalia’s Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. A total media blackout remains in effect, with only a handful of journalists left in the Jabalia refugee camp. The area has been enduring what local journalists describe as the most devastating Israeli siege since October 7, 2023.
Israeli forces are pushing deeper into the center of Jabalia as tanks encircle three hospitals, trapping patients and civilians. Gaza’s health authorities report 500 deaths since Israel's two-weeks-long siege of Jabalia began, though the actual death toll is feared to be much higher, with rescue efforts crippled by the Israeli military's shoot-on-sight orders.
Israel has blocked nearly all food aid from entering northern Gaza, a policy the UN has condemned as “surrender or starve.”
After several failed attempts to defeat resistance fighters in northern Gaza, Israel appears to be launching a total annihilation offensive, making life in the north impossible.
On this day in 2011, Muammar Gaddafi was killed by NATO-backed militias. What followed was the near total destruction of the country, and included the return of chattel slavery of Black Africans.

The socialist President of Mozambique, Samora Machel, was killed on this day in 1986. He died in a plane crash that the Soviet Union suspected was likely orchestrated by the government of apartheid South Africa.
Machel was a guerrilla leader of the Marxist-Leninist Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and the county’s first post-independence president. He nationalized natural resources and vocally supported the South African struggle against apartheid, angering the apartheid regime.
On this day in 1986, his plane crashed in the Lebombo Mountains near the South African border, killing him and 33 others. While the official cause was attributed to the pilot’s error, many believe that South Africa’s apartheid regime provoked the crash.
An investigation carried out by Soviet authorities found that an unusual 37-degree turn led the plane into the hills of Mbuzini. Their findings suggest that the plane was deliberately diverted by a false navigational beacon signal from South Africa.

Protests against electoral fraud and the killing of opposition figures have shaken Mozambique. The once-revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO) has now become a target of protests by people who are deeply angry with the status quo in the country.
Police fired tear gas and live ammunition into crowds, injuring a security guard and hitting two journalists. A nationwide strike also brought the entire country to a halt.
Over the weekend, lawyer Elvino Dias and opposition leader Paulo Guambe were shot dead. They were preparing a legal challenge to the pending election results that show FRELIMO winning, asserting that electoral fraud had been committed.
FRELIMO has been the ruling party for the past 49 years, since Mozambique achieved independence from Portugal. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, 65% of the population lives below the poverty line.

Severe electricity blackouts have hit Cuba, a result of the US blockade having left the island without stable access to fuel.
The country has long struggled with short blackouts, but this latest round are the worst yet. Most of the country has been totally disconnected for long periods of time. The US blockade on Cuba has made importing fuel extremely difficult, and Western sanctions on Venezuela and Russia have made the situation even worse.
Right-wing media in the region point to these blackouts as a failure of the government, without ever mentioning the US blockade. Meanwhile, Ecuador has also been suffering frequent blackouts for months despite not suffering any sanctions. But Ecuador’s energy crisis is rarely covered in regional media.

🟡 URGENT: Apocalyptic scenarios are unfolding in Jabalia in northern Gaza.
Israel is committing extermination raids across refugees camps, with journalists describing the situation as "like nothing before.”
Authorities warn they cannot give accurate casualty figures as the dead and wounded lie unreachable and rescue workers are paralyzed. They are held back by shoot-on-sight orders from Israeli forces.
In addition, there is a complete communications blackout in the region.
Israel's siege of the northern Gaza Strip has now lasted two weeks with nearly 500 dead, though the real figure is feared to be far higher.
