Several people were left unconscious after New York Police violently attacked protests against Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit and NY Mayor Eric Adams. Police charged into crowds, tackling and arresting protesters with zip ties. Protests were held against Netanyahu’s attendance at the UN General Assembly as well as against Adams, who was just indicted for stealing $10 million in public funds.
Protesters marched throughout the city, stopping in front of the Lowes Regency Hotel, where Netanyahu is believed to be staying. Later in the evening, drones circled overhead while hundreds of cops lined up before they started assaulting protesters.
The protests also called for Mayor Adams to resign in light of the new revelations of corruption. Prosecutors are investigating ties between Adams and foreign governments, including Turkey, Israel, China, Qatar, the Republic of Korea, and Uzbekistan. Adams allegedly funneled illegal donations from these countries into his campaign funds.

Health officials in Gaza have begun burying 88 unidentified bodies of Palestinians killed in Israel’s nearly year-long war on the enclave. Officials had previously refused to prepare the bodies for burial due to Israel not providing any information on their identities or the circumstances of their deaths.
The ministry said it holds Israel “fully responsible for the inhumane and immoral way it deals with the bodies.” It called on the international community to pressure Israel to adhere to international protocols.
Under international humanitarian law, those who die in armed conflict must be treated with dignity, and their remains adequately handled. The law mandates that bodies be searched for, collected, and evacuated from combat zones to prevent individuals from going missing.
Around 6,200 remains of Palestinians killed in Gaza remain unidentified. Approximately 10,000 more people are still missing due to Israel’s genocide.

Yet another rape by a US soldier has come to light on Japan’s Okinawa island. The incident in which a US Marine raped and injured a Japanese woman marks the third such case on the island since December 2023.
Japanese prosecutors charged the marine last week for the incident that occurred on June 21, 2024. This case follows the recent indictments of two other US service members on separate charges of rape and attempted rape. The revelations surfaced over the summer, further fueling tensions in Okinawa.
Okinawa’s prefectural government previously complained that it was kept in the dark about the two earlier indictments and other reports against US service members who were not charged.
Despite accounting for only 0.6% of Japan’s landmass, Okinawa hosts at least 70% of all US military bases in Japan. Okinawans have long endured various issues related to US military bases, including a troubling history of sexual assault cases.

The Palestinian-American professor Edward W. Said died today, 21 years ago. The world-renowned intellectual devoted his life primarily to bringing post-colonial studies to life, following in the footsteps of political philosophers such as Franz Fanon.
As can be seen in the picture, Said's work was not only at his desk but also on the streets. The picture shows him at protests in southern Lebanon against Israeli soldiers in 2000.
His work challenged the mainstream position on Palestine, with Said's countless journalistic articles, columns, and books pushing for the consequent liberation from the Israeli occupation. He refused to yield to personal attacks against him, even death threats.
The professor not only tirelessly fought a political battle, but also a decades-long struggle against his illness, from which he died on September 25, 2003.

Newly released footage shows New Zealand pilot Philip Mehrtens being freed by rebels in West Papua. Mehrtens, now released after 19 months of captivity, was previously seized by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) in February 2023 after he landed his small commercial plane in the remote region of Nduga.
The footage shows Mehrtens being released by his captors in a peaceful handover ceremony. Mehrtens can be seen shaking hands with locals and receiving a gift before boarding a helicopter.
While Mehrtens’ ordeal drew international attention, the broader fight for independence in West Papua remains under-reported. The West Papua independence movement, led by groups like the Free Papua Movement (OPM) and its armed wing, the TPNPB, has been fighting for independence since the territory’s disputed absorption into Indonesia in 1969.

“Gold for the few, destruction for the many” - read one of the signs at a protest in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Ghanaians are calling for an end to illegal mining, which they call galamsey. The police have so far arrested at least 44 people, including a 10-year-old and 62-year-old.
Illegal mining has wreaked havoc on the environment in Ghana. Forests, rivers, and farmland have become toxic due to the chemicals from illegal mining. Thousands of children work in these illegal mines, frequently working 14 hours a day in dire conditions.
In 2022, Ghana’s government received $6.6 billion in revenues from gold mining, which doesn’t include any corruption linked to illegal mining. Meanwhile, a large section of the population in Ghana lives in poverty and misery, many living on just $1 a day.

Greek police were filmed violently attacking a citizen in Athens’ Viktoria Square. Local witnesses report that police are patrolling the area, targeting citizens who may have participated in the justice march for Muhammad Kamran Ashiq, a migrant previously found dead inside the Agios Panteleimon Police Station.
Ashiq, a 37-year-old migrant of Pakistani origin, has reportedly been missing since September 13. Later, it became known that he was being held at the Omonia Police Station on charges of domestic violence. In total, Ashiq was transferred to five different police stations before being found dead at the Agios Panteleimon Police Station with clear torture signs all over his body.
While an investigation is underway, many, including Ashiq’s family, fear a cover-up of the events through the police investigation.
