In the first round, three Israelis held in Gaza were exchanged for at least 90 female Palestinians from Israeli prisons. The Palestinian prisoners will be released shortly. The plan is to exchange 33 of the approximately 100 Israeli captives in Gaza during the first phase of the ceasefire—matched against 1,890 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel—over a six-week period.
Negotiations over the total number of Palestinian prisoners to be freed in exchange for the remaining captives in Gaza are still unfolding in Qatar. The fragile three-phase ceasefire deal, meant to bring a lasting end to the Israeli extermination war, stands on shaky ground, looming to collapse at the accusation of betrayal from either side.

“Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on Brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?” argued Muhammad Ali.
In retrospect, Ali justified his decision with words that are more relevant today than ever as imperialist wars continue, “The government had a system where the rich man’s son went to college, and the poor man’s son went to war.”

On Patrice Lumumba’s death anniversary, we remember the words of the Congolese revolutionary and first Prime Minister of today’s DR Congo. His analyses combined Congo’s colonial past with an optimistic view of a future in which Africa takes control of its own history and destiny.
More than six decades later, the consequences of Lumumba’s assassination are still being felt by the Congolese people. Multinational corporations continue to plunder the wealth and resources of the DR Congo, making the country one of the “poorest” in the world.
In February 2002, the Belgian government admitted “an irrefutable share of responsibility for the events that led to Lumumba’s death.” In July 2002, documents released by the US government revealed that the CIA was instrumental in Lumumba’s assassination by supporting his killers with money, political support, weapons, and military training.

Did you know that the CIA once orchestrated the execution of today’s DR Congo’s first Prime Minister by a firing squad? On this day in 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Congo, was executed by a firing squad following assassination plots concocted by the US and Belgian governments.
Lumumba’s anti-imperialism and vision of a united Congo made him an adversary of both Belgium and US imperialism. Although the CIA ordered his assassination, they weren’t able to carry it out themselves.
Instead, Washington and Brussels secretly funneled cash and aid to rival politicians who organized a coup and arrested Lumumba. He was then beaten, tortured, and killed.
