Antony Blinken leaves the State Department today. He tried to shut us down for our reporting on the genocide he helped facilitate in Gaza. Despite the censorship, independent media must continue to shine a light on the crimes of colonialism and imperialism.

Anti-colonial freedom fighter Amílcar Cabral was born on this day in 1924. He led the fight to overthrow Portuguese colonialism in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, contributing to the end of Portugal’s fascist dictatorship. Cabral went on to become one of Africa’s most influential communist pan-African revolutionaries.
Through helping the anti-Portguese resistance in Angola, he aimed to achieve freedom for all of Portugal’s African colonies.
As a committed pan-Africanist and socialist, he focused on creating a socialist bloc by unifying Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. As they liberated areas of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, Cabral and his forces tried to build a socialist economy with central planning and cooperatives.
Just eight months before Guinea-Bissau achieved independence in September 1973, Cabral was assassinated by members of his movement, who it is believed were linked to the Portuguese intelligence services.

Thousands of Palestinians gathered around Red Cross buses carrying released prisoners from Israeli prisons to the West Bank as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal with the resistance.
The release was delayed by Israel for hours, with prisoners released after midnight. While the Red Cross was checking the names of prisoners to be released from Ofer prison, they discovered that Israel had not handed over all agreed on prisoners. Technical teams communicated with mediators to pressure Israel to comply with the agreed prisoner list, and then the prisoner buses were set off.

In the first round, three Israelis held in Gaza were exchanged for at least 90 female Palestinians from Israeli prisons. The Palestinian prisoners will be released shortly. The plan is to exchange 33 of the approximately 100 Israeli captives in Gaza during the first phase of the ceasefire—matched against 1,890 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel—over a six-week period.
Negotiations over the total number of Palestinian prisoners to be freed in exchange for the remaining captives in Gaza are still unfolding in Qatar. The fragile three-phase ceasefire deal, meant to bring a lasting end to the Israeli extermination war, stands on shaky ground, looming to collapse at the accusation of betrayal from either side.

🟡 NEW: Leonard Peltier’s life sentence was commuted as one of Biden’s final acts in office. The Native American political prisoner has been in prison for almost 50 years. However, Biden intentionally stopped short of granting him clemency, so Peltier will remain in home confinement.
In 1977, Peltier was wrongfully convicted of aiding and abetting the killing of two FBI agents in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. The evidence used to convict Peltier was very controversial, and his trial was ripe with irregularities. Many believe his imprisonment is retribution for his leadership in the Native American liberation movement.

Palestinian prisoners have started to be released from Israeli detention as part of the ceasefire agreement. The release comes after Hamas freed Israeli captives in Gaza City. Among the Palestinians to be released are 69 women and 21 children.
This marks the initial phase of several prisoner swaps negotiated under the terms of the truce brokered by Palestinian resistance forces.
According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, there are currently 10,400 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. This figure does not include those detained since October 7, 2023.
In the first stage of the three-phase ceasefire, more than 1,000 Palestinian detainees are expected to be exchanged for 33 Israeli captives held in Gaza. The total number of prisoners involved in the exchange is still being negotiated in Qatar.
