Rape and sexual violence are becoming rampant in displacement camps in eastern DR Congo. Since the new year, advances by the M23 militia have displaced over 237,000 people. Local organizations report worsening camp conditions along with an increase in attacks by armed groups.
The UN describes the forced displacement in DR Congo as “one of the world’s most alarming yet under-reported humanitarian crises, marked by widespread human rights violations and massive forced displacement.” Since 1998, six million people have been killed, and seven million have been displaced in the Central African country.
The destabilization of DR Congo’s mineral-rich east is fueled by constant fighting among about 100 armed groups in the region. The M23, the largest of these groups, has long been accused of being funded by Rwanda, a key Western ally. Rwanda also has its interests in Congo, namely gold smuggling, which forms a key part of the government’s foreign reserves.

Drone footage reveals the apocalyptic destruction of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. In November 2023 and again in March 2024, the hospital was under siege by the Israeli forces for weeks. During the siege, Israel starved, executed, tortured, and humiliated Palestinians.

Body-cam footage captures the raw, relentless intensity of combat in northeastern Colombia. The recordings appear to come from the perspective of the 33rd FARC Front, under siege by the Marxist ELN (National Liberation Army).
For years, the Catatumbo region, bordering Venezuela, has been an ELN stronghold, now contested by the 33rd. The ELN dismissively refers to many FARC-dissident fronts as degenerate and depoliticized remnants from the officially demobilized FARC-EP in 2016.
The fiercest battles in years now threaten to derail President Gustavo Petro's fragile peace policies. Petro deployed 5,000 soldiers to the region, suspended ongoing peace talks, and issued a stark threats to the ELN: “War is what you’ll get.”
So far, more than 100 people have been killed, and more than 12,000 displaced, many fleeing across the border into Venezuela. The ELN remains Colombia’s largest and oldest guerrilla group, while FARC dissident factions, splintered and weakened since the 2016 peace agreement, continue to grapple with growing internal divisions.

Yemen will cease military actions against British and US-linked vessels in the Red Sea, but sanctions on Israel-linked ships remain until all phases of the Gaza ceasefire are implemented, according to a January 19 update from the Humanitarian Operations Center.

On this day in 1891, influential Italian Marxist theorist and Communist Party leader Antonio Gramsci was born. After Benito Mussolini’s fascists took power, communism was outlawed, and Gramsci was arrested and sentenced to 11 years in prison, where he died on April 27, 1937.
Gramsci was considered one of the greatest minds of his time and was even revered by his political enemies. Mussolini said that Gramsci had “an unquestionably powerful brain.” When he was on trial, the prosecutor also argued that it was necessary to “prevent this brain from functioning for 20 years.”
During his time in prison, Gramsci filled over 30 notebooks with his writings, later entitled “The Prison Notebooks.” One of his most famous theories was “cultural hegemony,” which explained how the ruling classes maintained their control over the masses through ideological and cultural means.

“[...] the insurrection is not over but still continuing.”—Republic of Korea (ROK) President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the Constitutional Court hearing for his impeachment trial, denying all charges related to his brief declaration of martial law in early December. This appearance marked the first time in the nation’s modern history that an impeached president attended such a hearing in person.
Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters—both supporting and opposing Yoon—gathered outside the court. During Yoon’s initial court appearance on Saturday, which addressed whether to extend his detention, hundreds of pro-Yoon protesters stormed the court building, attacking journalists and clashing with police.
Experts caution that the impeached president’s decision to attend the Constitutional Court hearings may be aimed more at rallying his staunch far-right supporters than contributing to the judicial process.

The operation is targeting the resistance in the city, which is mainly concentrated in Jenin Refugee Camp. The camp was under siege by Palestinian security forces for over a month, but they failed to break the resistance. Now, the mission is continuing under the Israeli occupation forces.
As the ceasefire in Gaza continues, Israel is shifting its focus to the West Bank. The Israeli military has deployed more forces across the West Bank and increased restrictions between Palestinian cities and villages. Meanwhile, Palestinian Authority forces stand still, refusing to defend or protect their people.
