Did you know Cuba’s national hero isn’t Fidel Castro but a 19th-century radical? Cuban freedom fighter and revolutionary José Martí was born on this day in 1853. Martí was known as “the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution” and fought for Cuban independence from Spanish colonialism. His legacy has inspired revolutionaries across Latin America.
Through his writings and political action, he advocated for a united and independent Cuba and, as a result, was deported from his homeland by the Spanish imperialists. In exile, Martí traveled in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, raising awareness of the Cuban struggle for freedom from colonialism.
Martí was also the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, and he played a key role in uniting the Cuban people and sparking the independence war against Spain. He was killed on the battlefield during the Battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895, against the hated Spanish imperialists.

What do Gaza and Auschwitz have in common? Both are emblematic of the cruelty and resilience witnessed during genocide. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the historical liberation of Auschwitz.
From being the Nazis’ worst extermination camp to the lesser-known resistance of its inmates, Auschwitz remains a symbol of not only the suffering, but also the bravery witnessed during the Holocaust.
And as we remember the liberation of Auschwitz 80 years on, we are reminded of the Auschwitz of our time: Gaza, yet another symbol of bravery amid suffering.

Thousands rallied in Bukavu as the city of Goma in eastern DR Congo fell to the Rwandan-backed M23 militia. Protesters criticized the role of foreign powers like the US, UK, and France in supporting Rwanda and contributing to the country’s “balkanization.”
Protesters came out in droves to oppose what they called a foreign occupation of the mineral-rich eastern part of the country. The Rwandan government denies supporting the M23 militia, while UN reports claim the contrary. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres publicly called on Rwanda to withdraw from the Congo.
Meanwhile, the DR Congo has formally invited South African forces to intervene on its behalf. Despite this, Goma fell to M23 while South African soldiers hurried to change into civilian clothes and hide inside a UN base.
Since 1998, six million people have been killed, and seven million displaced in the Central African country.

Serbia’s uprising has spread to dozens of cities after the collapse of the railway station awning, which killed 15 people. A general strike was held on Friday, during which many did not work or purchase goods and services. The entire country, including students, workers, farmers, miners, and more have mobilized against the corrupt ruling system in Serbia.
Over 60 of approximately 80 universities in the country have been blockaded by students for over two months. The students are demanding accountability for the collapse of the railway station awning, which was recently renovated in coordination with a Chinese contractor.
In addition, students are calling for full transparency in the documentation related to the collapse. Many suspect that the renovation project neglected safety measures and quality to maximize profit.
