Return is an act of resistance, say Lebanese residents of Yaroun. Across southern Lebanon, people are marching toward the occupied territories in a defiant challenge to Israeli control, which has repeatedly violated the ceasefire agreement. Despite the dangers, families are reclaiming their villages, determined to assert their presence in areas that have been heavily targeted.
The ceasefire agreement was intended to end hostilities and mandated Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon. However, Israeli forces remain in the area and have continued their relentless attacks. Since Sunday, at least 26 people have been killed and 221 injured by Israeli gunfire.

This comes as Israeli forces shot and killed at least 24 Lebanese residents that were returning home on Sunday. The ceasefire’s deadline for Israeli withdrawal from the south was on January 26.

Thousands rallied in Bukavu as the city of Goma in eastern DR Congo fell to the Rwandan-backed M23 militia. Protesters criticized the role of foreign powers like the US, UK, and France in supporting Rwanda and contributing to the country’s “balkanization.”
Protesters came out in droves to oppose what they called a foreign occupation of the mineral-rich eastern part of the country. The Rwandan government denies supporting the M23 militia, while UN reports claim the contrary. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres publicly called on Rwanda to withdraw from the Congo.
Meanwhile, the DR Congo has formally invited South African forces to intervene on its behalf. Despite this, Goma fell to M23 while South African soldiers hurried to change into civilian clothes and hide inside a UN base.
Since 1998, six million people have been killed, and seven million displaced in the Central African country.

Cuban students held the traditional Torchlight March to celebrate the birthday of national liberation hero José Martí. In a march led by Raúl Castro and President Díaz-Canel, the students used torches to signify the eternal flame of Martí’s ideas and his struggle for national independence.
International students in Havana joined the march, including a Palestinian student who spoke to media to emphasise the universal importance of Martí as a symbol of liberation.
The march comes as US President Trump launches fresh attacks against the island, including placing them back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, as well as hinting at more sanctions.

Did you know Cuba’s national hero isn’t Fidel Castro but a 19th-century radical? Cuban freedom fighter and revolutionary José Martí was born on this day in 1853. Martí was known as “the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution” and fought for Cuban independence from Spanish colonialism. His legacy has inspired revolutionaries across Latin America.
Through his writings and political action, he advocated for a united and independent Cuba and, as a result, was deported from his homeland by the Spanish imperialists. In exile, Martí traveled in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, raising awareness of the Cuban struggle for freedom from colonialism.
Martí was also the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, and he played a key role in uniting the Cuban people and sparking the independence war against Spain. He was killed on the battlefield during the Battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895, against the hated Spanish imperialists.
