Around 100 Jewish settlers attacked the Palestinian village of Jit close to Qalqilya in the occupied West Bank. The settlers, dressed in black and armed, set fire to several cars and houses while people were inside. They also shot and killed one Palestinian and injured another as the Palestinian residents defended their houses from the attack.

Since October 7, violent attacks by illegal settlers and Israeli forces have intensified significantly while being fully backed by the Israeli government and its fascist ministers.

Several of those ministers live in settlements across the occupied West Bank themselves, such as Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir, who distributed over 100,000 assault rifles to Jewish settlers after October 7. At the same time, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has overseen massive land grabs in the West Bank.

Read this to find out who exactly the groups and organizations leading the violent settler movement in the West Bank are.

French police have shot dead yet another protester in New Caledonia as clashes between pro-independence protesters and law enforcement persist. The latest death raises the death toll from now three months of violent unrest in the Pacific archipelago occupied by France to 11.

The clashes occurred in Thio, a small mining town known as a pro-independence stronghold on the eastern coast of Grande Terre, the archipelago’s main island. Police attempted to clear roadblocks when police shot at a group of protesters, responding to alleged gunfire, according to public prosecutor Yves Dupas.

Two protesters were wounded, one of whom died en route to Nouméa General Hospital. Dupas added that several investigations are underway and promised to provide more details later.

Pro-Palestine activists disrupted business as usual at Kamala Harris’s fundraising event in New York. People gathered outside the campaign event for the Democratic presidential candidate. They called for the end of US complicity in Israeli crimes against Palestinaans. The police attacked the protesters and brutally arrested several people.

Harris, who replaced Biden as a candidate for the Democratic Party, has stated that she will not support an arms embargo on Israel. The US has been the main supplier of the bombs that Israel uses to target civilians in Gaza. Those weapons shipments are despite calls by UN experts for an arms embargo on Israel.

A massive strike brought Quezon City in the Philippines to a standstill. Public transport workers protested against proposed reforms that threaten to phase out the country’s iconic Jeepneys. With around 179,000 Jeepneys nationwide, unions fear up to 140,000 drivers and 60,000 operators could lose their livelihoods if the government’s plans go ahead.

Jeepneys are the lifeblood of the Philippines’ transportation network, offering affordable and accessible rides to millions of Filipino workers, especially in the bustling urban centers. For as little as 13 pesos ($0.23), these vehicles provide crucial mobility for the nation’s working class. Despite their vital role, the government has been pushing for years to eliminate the aging fleet, originally built from repurposed US Army jeeps left behind after World War II.

The death toll in Gaza has officially surpassed 40,000. This number only includes bodies that have been fully recovered, identified, and buried, meaning that it is definitively an underestimate. Approximately 10,000 people are thought to be buried under the rubble and irretrievable as Israel’s carpet bombing continues unabated.

40,000 murdered Palestinians represent 2% of Gaza’s population, or one in every 50 people. This statistic excludes deaths related to starvation, illnesses, and the destruction of public infrastructure. The medical journal The Lancet conducted a study that estimates that, including all these indirect deaths, more than 186,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7.

Ceasefire talks are resuming today in Qatar. While the US, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar are attending, Hamas will not attend. It is waiting for a serious response from Israel on the existing ceasefire proposal via the mediators.

The results of the talks will be critical for the region. If they fail once again, it could increase the potential of a regional war between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah.

Chileans are protesting against the neoliberal government of Gabriel Boric as power cuts hit large areas of the capital.

Following a recent storm, much of Santiago was left without basic services. Working class districts on the outskirts of the city have still not had their connection restored. For eleven days now, residents have been abandoned and unable to store food or heat water.

While working class Chileans go without electricity, President Boric has been focused on condemning Venezuela and urging other governments in the region to do the same.

Gabriel Boric was elected as the candidate of a leftist coalition, but has since abandoned the struggle to draft a new constitution, failed to make any significant reforms to the neoliberal model he inherited, and spearheaded attempts to isolate Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua within the region.

Peasants in Colombia have arrested almost 100 army soldiers in San José del Guaviare in protest against the militarization of their region. Humanitarian mediation has already negotiated the release of 40 soldiers.

The military operation in the region, which primarily serves to fight the dissidents of the FARC (EMC) guerrillas, is accompanied by discrimination against the local population. This includes, in particular, indiscriminate searches by the soldiers, constant controls and the fact that the advance of the soldiers always brings with it the risk of military escalation.

In Colombia, it is not uncommon for the rural population to arrest soldiers during operations against guerrilla groups. The local rural population often experience the army as an occupying force, as the state is otherwise barely present and neglects the rural regions.

“We are ready to move to Gaza now!” — announced Daniella Weiss, former mayor of an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank. The leader of the far-right settlements movement boasted about pushing Israeli politicians to move forward with the Zionist colonization of Gaza.

Weiss gathered with settlers in the Nahal Oz settlement close to Gaza to announce they are ready to move to Gaza and ethnically cleanse Palestinians from their land.

A few days earlier, she gave an interview on Israeli TV advocating that Israel “copy/paste” the colonization of the West Bank to the Gaza Strip.

Few individuals in German history have struggled against militarism and war as much as the pioneering communist Karl Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871. His notable quote, “The main enemy is within our own country,” resonates across time and remains pertinent even today.

Amid WWI, Liebknecht and his close comrade Rosa Luxemburg organized a mass rebellion of German workers and soldiers. During the November Revolution of 1918-1919, the communist faction attempted to deal a fatal blow to the crumbling German monarchy but failed in the power struggle against the Social Democrats who allied with fascist forces.

The radical lawyer fought for working-class people in court, laid the theoretical foundation for the anti-militarist struggle, and co-founded several communist organizations, including the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht and Luxemburg were murdered in 1919 by fascist paramilitaries, for which the KPD holds the Social Democrats partly responsible.

The German army “Bundeswehr” wants to honor Nazi soldiers as official “role models.” During a government press conference, the Defense Ministry’s spokesperson defended the decision while using inconsistent criteria to determine which former Wehrmacht soldiers, including SS fascists and Nazi party members, should contribute to the Bundeswehr’s “understanding of tradition.”

This decision was formalized in the military’s “Tradition Decree,” an official document meant to serve as a “moral compass” for the Bundeswehr. When the Bundeswehr was established in 1955, around 40,000 former Nazi Wehrmacht officers and junior officers formed its core.

The MOD justified the decision by citing the process of “denazification,” the post-war effort to pseudo-purge Nazi ideology from the German state and society. Even prominent Nazis within the Wehrmacht, such as fighter pilot Erich Hartmann, who directly killed at least 352 people, were allowed to rejoin the Bundeswehr in 1956.

In the US, Cuba is portrayed as a backward Communist dictatorship hell-hole where people live in grinding poverty and infrastructure is falling apart. However, not only is this a distorted, inaccurate picture, but it ignores the numerous areas where Cuba does better than the US.

While homelessness is soaring in the US, in Cuba it is effectively non-existent. Homelessness in the US has risen by 11% this year to reach the highest level in 15 years since US authorities started collecting data.

In contrast, housing is considered a human right in Cuba, and rent is capped at 10% of family income. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Fidel Castro introduced housing subsidies and state-owned homes to combat homelessness, almost eradicating it as a social problem. Today, thanks to government subsidies, around 90% of Cubans own their own home compared to about 65.9% in the US.

34 South African mineworkers were massacred by police, on this day in 2012. It was the worst massacre since the apartheid regime’s repression of the 1976 Soweto uprising.

The killings were also a political turning point as many workers started to lose faith in the increasingly neoliberal African National Congress (ANC). As a result, the Economic Freedom Fighters, led by Julius Malema, burst onto the scene and is still contending with the ANC.

The strike began in August 2012 demanding a pay raise. The government-allied union, the National Union of Mineworkers, did not approve the walkout but workers still went ahead with a wildcat strike.

Government repression resulted in the killing of 34 miners whose families are still seeking justice. This is the worst massacre to have been carried out by an ANC government.

Chile's socialist left is best known internationally for President Salvador Allende. Allende’s parliamentary socialism largely overshadows groups like the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR), which was founded today in 1965.

Despite the political fractures between Chile's leftist reformists and revolutionaries, the MIR defended Allende from the fascist reaction and was the only group to wage long-term armed resistance against the US-backed Pinochet dictatorship.

Did you know about this relatively unknown chapter of Chile's leftist history? Read on here.

Students at Columbia celebrated the resignation of the university’s president, Minouche Shafik. During the recent historic student protests and occupations for Gaza, Shafik ordered the repression of those taking part. First she took disciplinary action against protesters, including expelling some students, but also by authorizing the entry of New York police to violently clear out the occupation.

Shafik admitted that the protests played a role in her decision saying, “It has also been a period of turmoil where it has been difficult to overcome divergent views across our community.”

Columbia’s encampment sparked the wave of pro-Palestine students occupations that spread to every corner of the US. These protests inspired student occupations internationally, with students mobilizing in Europe, Latin America, and beyond.

The movement that toppled Hasina’s 15-year rule in Bangladesh continues full steam ahead. Over the last two months, Bangladesh state forces and affiliated hooligans killed more than 560 people during the protests. Students are now demanding that Hasina be tried in court and that all detained protesters be released.

What started as a movement against the quota system for government jobs transformed into a nationwide uprising against the dire economic situation and corrupt ruling elite. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been replaced by Muhammad Yunus, who is being presented as a progressive step forward.

red. spoke with the Communist Party of East Bengal (Marxist-Leninist), who said, “It should be remembered that although Hasina’s fascist rule and exploitation have ended, the feudal, bureaucratic, and capitalist oppression over the worker, farmer, and student masses has not ceased; it still exists. Without uprooting this feudal exploitation, true democracy cannot be established.”

In blatant hypocrisy in front of the entire world, Israel’s UN spokesperson, Gilad Erdan, called Israel “the most moral country in the world.” All the while, Israel continues its brutal annihilation of Palestinians in Gaza. Israeli soldiers are torturing kidnapped Palestinian prisoners using sadistic methods, including rape. Israeli politicians have joined protests to protect the “right” of soldiers to torture and rape Palestinian prisoners.

Early morning Israeli attacks in Gaza killed at least 20 Palestinians as they pounded central, southern, and northern Gaza. Two refugee camps, including Nuseirat and Maghazi, several locations across Khan Younis, Beit Lahiya City, and Gaza City have all been targeted since last night.

Israel’s relentless war on the Gaza Strip has officially killed at least 39,929, according to figures released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. This amounts to 1.8% of Gaza’s population. 24% of those killed are said to be young people.

Since October 7, nearly every inch of the Gaza Strip has been targeted by the 70,000 bombs Israel has dropped on the enclave, a newly compiled map using UN satellite data has revealed.

“Water yes! Mining no!” is the slogan of Indigenous protesters in Ayacucho, Peru who are calling for the expulsion of mining companies in the province of Huanta. Local communities say that mining operations are destroying the environment and poisoning the rivers that the region relies on for drinking water and agriculture.

Mining in Peru is entirely privatized, with the government handing out the country’s natural resources to Peruvian and foreign multinational companies without consulting the affected communities.

Illegal mining by corporate-backed criminal groups, particularly in the Amazon, also has a devastating effect on the environment. 22 major rivers in the Peruvian Amazon have been contaminated by gold mining operations.
