On this day 82 years ago, on September 8, 1941, the German military cut the last remaining road the city of Leningrad had to the outside world. What followed was 872 days of heroic resistance by Soviet citizens but also unbearable hunger, despair, and cruelty, as 1.5 million people died before the blockade was finally lifted on January 27, 1944.

Militant protesters took to Berlin’s streets, responding to Israel’s ruthless expansion of its war of extermination into the West Bank. Around 100 masked activists marched through Berlin, condemning Germany’s direct complicity in the genocide, with Berlin handing weapons straight into the hands of the Israeli occupying forces. Slogans were sprayed on walls like “When West Bank burns, Berlin burns.” Light barricades went up, and pyrotechnics lit the night.

An attack by communist guerrillas on Chile’s fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet today in 1986 narrowly missed its target, and Pinochet escaped death. The attack marked the only executed attempt to overthrow the dictatorship that had ousted Chile’s socialist president, Salvador Allende, 13 years earlier.
The attempted attack by the communist group Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front (FPMR) was planned in detail for months. Even though the attack failed, the FPMR still serves as a model for revolutionary Chileans. Read on to discover the relatively unknown capital of the country’s leftist history.

”We stood here as human shields and the army fired from behind us” - This is just one of the many horrific testimonies coming from Palestinians in Jenin refugee camp. After 10 days of an invasion, the occupation forces withdrew but left massive destruction throughout the city.
Palestinian civil defense crews in Jenin have started clearing out rubble and repairing infrastructure. Many people were imprisoned in their homes without basic supplies as the Israeli forces besieged different areas across Jenin.
The Israeli army announced that the operation is not over and will continue as needed. Since the start of the invasion, Israeli forces have killed at least 39 Palestinians and arrested over 180. Several Palestinian bodies have been confiscated by Israeli forces.

Thousands of Bangladeshis flooded the streets of Dhaka, the capital, to protest against Israel’s war of extermination against Palestine. The streets were awash with enormous Palestinian flags. The protests were spearheaded by Bangladesh's powerful student movement, fresh from toppling former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the most violent political upheaval the nation has seen since its independence in 1971. As protesters stormed government buildings and the Prime Minister’s residence, the Palestinian flag flew side by side with the Bangladeshi flag.

🟡 BREAKING: Israeli forces killed an international activist with a shot to the head during an anti-colonial protest in Beita, near Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Greta Thunberg chained herself to a studio microphone at the Danish broadcaster P3 to amplify her support of Palestine beyond the intended runtime of the show “Balalajka.” Her radio appearance came just as she was released from police custody. On Wednesday, she was arrested during a blockade of Copenhagen University with 20 other activists. At least 21 people have vanished into the Mediterranea Sea, swallowed by the waves near the Italian island of Lampedusa. The sea is becoming a graveyard, warns the UN, which many say is being fueled by Italy’s far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her relentless push to “fortify” Europe's borders.
Since 2014, the Mediterranean has claimed over 30,000 refugees—1,336 in 2024 alone. Meloni, in power since 2022, has turned her anti-migration stance into the entire EU’s policy against the people crossing one of the world’s deadliest waters.
On one front, she's cracking down on humanitarian rescue missions. On another, she's cutting deals with African border guards and coastal forces, outsourcing the often violent force used to shut down migration routes.
But the blood-soaked policy doesn't stop at Italy. Just days before the latest Lampedusa case, 12 more perished in the English Channel off the coast of northern France—the deadliest incident there this year.

Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei has vetoed a law to increase pensions in line with inflation. Elderly Argentinians who rallied to demand an increase to their $179 monthly pension were met with brutal repression.
The law to increase pensions and help the elderly deal with inflation was passed by Congress but vetoed by Milei. He called anyone who voted to help the elderly “financial degenerates.”
Along with destroying pensions through inflation, Milei has also removed access to free and subsidized medicine that helped the elderly. As unions and pensioner groups marched in the capital yesterday, police used tear gas, pepper spray, and batons to beat down the pensioners.

The West German guerrilla Red Army Faction (RAF) kidnapped the businessman Hanns Martin Schleyer on this day in 1977. But did you know that Schleyer was a former SS officer—a fact often ignored in the historical narrative?
Schleyer’s anti-communist views, his Nazi past, and subsequent position as a Christian Democratic Union party member made him a target for the RAF. The RAF used Schleyer to blackmail the West German government into releasing imprisoned RAF members. After all the imprisoned members were found dead in their jail cells, Schleyer was killed by the kidnappers.
The RAF urban guerrilla group emerged from the 1968 student movement and remained active until 1998. Due to the RAF’s numerous activities against the West German state and its NATO allies, they became increasingly prominent during the 1970s. The infamous picture of Schleyer being held by the RAF has since become one of the most iconic pictures of the 20th century.

Catastrophic wildfires plague Brazil, further exacerbated by climate change. Last month, the number of fires in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest reached over 38,000, the highest number since 2010. Amidst extreme heat and a record-breaking drought, 2024 is shaping up to be the worst year for Amazon fires in the past two decades.
In the first seven months of this year, the Brazilian Amazon saw a 76% increase in fire hotspots compared to 2023 during the same period. Locals have already seen the rainforest shrink by around 20%. Furthermore, fires in the Pantanal wetlands have been 40% more intense due to climate change, a recent report showed.
While not entirely uncommon for the dry season, this year’s record number of wildfires across the South American country were only made possible through worsening climate change.

Police in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, launched a violent crackdown on workers protesting the disbandment of the Public Works Department (PWD), a move that threatens the jobs of 10,000 workers. At least 17 protesters were arrested, and police deployed tear gas in an attempt to quell the unrest.
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, blocking roads and voicing their outrage at the government’s decision, which has sparked fears of mass layoffs and deepening uncertainty over their livelihoods. The protests, now stretching into several days, mirror the intensity and violence of previous PWD protests.

The Berlin police launched an aggressive crackdown on a pro-Palestine protest, leading to several violent arrests, as reported by red. media on the ground. Thousands took to the streets of the capital of Germany, the number two key backer of Israel’s annihilation war against Palestine.
Meanwhile, a pitifully small group of Zionist counter-protesters gathered, blasting pro-genocidal rap music in support of the Israeli occupation forces, shielded heavily by the Berlin police.
Exactly 11 months since Israel’s onslaught on Gaza began, Germany’s arms supply to Israel shows no signs of slowing down. The latest research by the SIPRI institute reveals that between 2019 and 2023, Germany provided 30% of Israel's military imports.

Wildfires are devastating Bolivia in the eastern regions of the country which border Brazil. Air quality is now considered “hazardous” in numerous towns and cities according to the Air Quality Index (AQI). Indigenous communities in the Amazon basin have been most affected so far.
Bolivia’s Ministry of Defense has mobilized firefighters and humanitarian resources for those affected. They have also stated that the issue is caused by fires and smoke spreading from Brazil into Bolivia.
Bolivia is experiencing record-breaking increases in deforestation, as well as the opening of public lands for production of soy and other export goods.
Big landowners, aligned with the right-wing opposition, dominate the eastern regions. They are a powerful bloc that successive governments have found difficult to challenge due to their grip on a significant portion of food production.

EXCLUSIVE: A comrade of Aysenur Ezgi, the Turkish-American activist shot in the head by Israeli snipers today, recounts the harrowing moments from Ezgi’s peaceful protest up to her death.
Ezgi was a volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a group defiantly active in occupied Palestine.
A fellow ISM volunteer who stood alongside Ezgi during the protest insists that Israeli snipers targeted her because she dared to expose their war crimes.
At home in the US, 26-year-old Ezgi was a leading activist in the student movement for Palestine at the University of Washington in Seattle. Photos of her in a graduation robe, wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh, spread across social media after her death.
The responses from US officials are weak. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made vague promises of an investigation. But Washington has a long history of providing diplomatic cover for Israeli forces, leaving the killers of American activists unpunished.

“This was an intentional killing” – eyewitnesses recount the murder of the Turkish-American activist by the Israeli occupation forces in Beita village near Nablus city in the occupied West Bank. The activist was announced dead after being shot in the head with a live bullet during a protest against the confiscation of land by Israel.
Aysenur Ezgi was volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), an organization providing a protective presence and solidarity with Palestinians in the West Bank. Ezgi is not the first person to by killed by Israelis in Beita. Since protests started in 2020, 17 Palestinians were killed in Beita.
In recent years, Beita has seen protests, particularly against the construction of new illegal Israeli outposts on the land of the village. In June, the Israeli security cabinet approved the “legalization” of the Evyatar settlement, causing the people of Beita and international solidarity activists to restart weekly protests on July 5, 2024.

Macron has allied with the far-right to appoint conservative grandee, Michel Barnier, as France’s new Prime Minister. Despite the recent electoral victory of the “New Popular Front,” Macron has disregarded the results and imposed Barnier, a member of the “Les Républicains” party, which came in fourth in the last election.
The appointment of Barnier will rely on the support of Le Pen’s far-right group in parliament because Macron’s centrist grouping came in second place. This means that Le Pen’s party will be able to extract numerous concessions as they’ll have the power to pull the rug from the fragile government.
The move is a flagrant disregard for the outcome of the July elections, in which the “New Popular Front,” a coalition of the Communist Party, Melenchon’s France Insoumise, and the Socialist Party, came in first place. Meaning, they should have been given the office of the Prime Minister.

Anti-migrant hate speech has reached the center of German society, as seen here during an election campaign speech by Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s largest party, the right-wing conservative CDU. Once branding itself as the “firewall” against the far-right AfD, the CDU has drifted closer to its “rivals.”
The CDU’s shift to the right is not least aimed at taking the wind out of the sails of their fascist competitors. The AfD recently won regional elections as the strongest force in its history for the first time, and its federal election poll ratings are soaring by 17.5%. The CDU/CSU coalition still holds the lead at 32.4%, but the margin is shrinking.
Merz’s message is clear: the real enemy isn’t the economic downturn or years of political mismanagement—it’s the foreigners. Conveniently forgotten is that the CDU just spent 16 years in power, crafting the very policies that have defined modern Germany, from liberal economic reforms to austerity cuts.

Israel once again bombed displaced Palestinians sheltering near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, the largest in central Gaza. At least four people were killed including women and children, with more than 10 people injured.
Videos of the aftermath show the destruction and the burned tents, as people have no place left to go. Israel continues to bomb throughout Gaza, including designated safe areas. Other Israeli air strikes also targeted the Zaytun neighborhood in Gaza City.
Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 40,861 people and injured more than 94,398. Thousands more remain missing. Despite this, Israel has failed to dismantle the resistance, which is continuing even in areas that have been invaded multiple times.

Shots were fired near the Israeli General Consulate in Munich, Germany, during a shootout between the police and an unidentified suspect armed with a long gun. The broad-daylight confrontation ended swiftly when officers shot down the gunman. Hamas has fully agreed to a deal made by independent Israeli negotiator Gershon Baskin, who was negotiating on behalf of the families of the remaining Israeli hostages.
Baskin, famous for his key role in securing the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit from Gaza in 2011, arranged the deal through private back channels with Hamas.
Despite Hamas accepting the deal without any changes, the Netanyahu government and the US ultimately rejected it.

The US Embassy is organizing a coup against Honduras, says the country’s President Xiomara Castro. She stated in an emergency press conference: “The plan to destroy my democratic, socialist government and the next electoral process is underway.”
Yesterday, Honduras’s Foreign Ministry denounced US pressure over its support for Venezuelan President Maduro.
Following that, a video from 2013 was published by local media allegedly showing a known drug trafficker meeting with the brother of Xiomara Castro’s husband 11 years ago. The government denies that there are any links or financing between the persons in the video and the governing party.
The government of Honduras sees this series of incidents as preparation for an attempted coup against the government.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared with a map of occupied Palestine with the West Bank fully annexed. Although this is not the first time Netanyahu or Israeli ministers removed the West Bank or Gaza from maps, the reality is that the map reflects the Israeli government's policies and plans never to allow a Palestinian state to exist.
In the last months, the Israeli government has changed how the West Bank is governed, changing it from being under the military to being under a civilian body led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Smotrich is spearheading the annexation of the West Bank by approving and supporting the expansion of settlements and land confiscation.
Some European countries, alongside the US, have imposed sanctions on some settlers and organizations facilitating settlement expansions. But actual actions to stop Israel's illegal occupation of Gaza and the West Bank are yet to be seen.
