Scores of Palestinians are fleeing Al-Aqsa Hospital, the last remaining functioning medical facility in central Gaza. The latest death march, including patients and displaced Palestinians, comes as the Israeli army has ordered the forcible displacement from areas in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, previously designated as “safe zones.”
The Gaza Government Media Office later confirmed that Al-Aqsa Hospital is not within the affected areas. With nearby areas being affected, however, many have been compelled to flee the hospital, fearing an impending attack on the hospital.
All of Gaza’s 36 hospitals have already previously come under repeated attacks, including raids, by Israeli forces. As a result, only 16 hospitals remain functioning across the entire Strip.

At least 50 Bangladeshis were injured in clashes between students and paramilitary members.
The clashes occurred after members of the Ansar paramilitary group took several students, including a student leader and advisor in the interim government, hostage. Student protest coordinator Hasnat Abdullah stated that “autocratic forces are trying to make a comeback through the Ansar force.”
Bangladesh’s student-led uprising that toppled the fascist Hasina has resulted in an interim government led by liberal reformer Muhammad Yunus. Yunus recently announced that elections will be held after reforms are carried out in the electoral system and judiciary. He has not given a deadline for said elections.

Happy Birthday to the undefeated revolutionary military leader, Võ Nguyên Giáp !The Vietnamese People's Army general helped to defeat US imperialism and French colonialism. He was nicknamed “Red Napoleon” by the West – a flawed Eurocentric comparison because, unlike Napoleon, Giáp never lost a war.
The son of the village teacher who grew up to become an army leader, he taught painful lessons to the best French and US generals who possessed lots of experience with colonialist wars.
He lead the Vietnamese revolutionary forces in World War II, the Vietnam War in 1945, the First Indochina War, the US war against Vietnam in 1955, the Vietnam-Cambodia War, and the Sino-Vietnamese War. The Communist Party of Vietnam celebrates Giáp for leading an “army of a small and backward colonial country” to victory against the “professional army of a powerful colonialist-imperialist force.”

Happy birthday to Marsha P. Johnson, a revolutionary Black transgender woman who led the Stonewall Riots as well as pioneered LGBTQ+ struggles. She is still a source of inspiration for LGBTQ+ activists today.
Working with Sylvia Rivera, she played a vital role in building the Gay Liberation Front, organizing marches, and establishing the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) group. Her life reached a tragic conclusion in July 1992 when her body was discovered in the Hudson River.

On this day in 1960, Cuban revolutionary Vilma Espín founded the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC), Latin America’s largest women’s organization. Today, four million women in Cuba are organized by the non-governmental federation. Here is an album of the legendary ex-guerrilla fighter, Cuba’s First Lady Vilma Espín, and Cuban women in struggle.
Although women made up only 17% of the labor force and were the primary victims of the illiteracy that afflicted much of the population, they played a crucial role in the fight against the Batista dictatorship. Through underground organizations, Cuban women helped win the revolutionary war.
The FMC spearheaded what Fidel called the “revolution within the revolution” and contributed to drafting the first constitution and Family Code, which guaranteed women a series of rights. Through the work of the FMC, Cuba pioneered sexual and reproductive rights. It was the first Latin American country to legalize free abortion in 1965.

Berlin police stormed a Black woman’s apartment as she was sleeping naked in bed because her racist neighbors called them, falsely claiming she was a burglar.
The police showed up unannounced to the woman’s apartment, illegally broke in, and, according to her on-camera testimony, male officers entered her bedroom where she had been sleeping naked. Just another day in Germany, rife with structural racism and sexism.

Massive protests across Indonesia continue to escalate over the contentious regional electoral law revisions. Despite the Indonesian parliament’s postponement of the ratification of these changes, protesters remain on the streets, with some raising doubts about the law’s actual cancellation.
The protests have rapidly expanded in both size and intensity, with thousands of students and activists flooding the streets. Key buildings, including the Constitutional Court, Presidential Palace, and House of Parliament, were invaded during the unrest.
The parliament supposedly did not pass the legislation due to a lack of a quorum, and it is unclear if they will try to ratify the changes before regional elections open up on Tuesday. The ongoing repression and legislative maneuvers reveal a deepening commitment to preserving the status quo at the expense of the people’s democratic rights.

Enraged Indonesians took to the streets to oppose the ruling party’s latest power grab. In major cities like Jakarta, Padang, Bandung, and Yogyakarta, police attacked protesters with tear gas and water cannons. The ruling elite has already been forced to listen to the will of the people, as they have just suspended the change.
Protesters are rallying against changes to electoral regulations which would effectively prevent smaller parties from challenging the ruling party. The country is up in arms as they see this as a political crisis that further encroaches on basic democratic rights.
Indonesia has a notoriously difficult environment for political organizing. It is illegal to support communism and the country’s president-elect, Prabowo Subianto, was kicked out of the military in 1998 for kidnapping student activists.

Thousands of people rallied in several cities in Indonesia over the weekend, continuing the uprising from last week. Protesters are pressuring the election commission to issue new rules for regional voting amid attempts by parliamentary allies of President Joko Widodo to change them in their favor.
The biggest protest was outside the Indonesian parliament in Jakarta, where police forces attacked protesters, fired tear gas, and used water canons in an attempt to disperse the crowds.

The genocide in Gaza has left no form of life untouched. In addition to the immense human suffering in the Strip, animals and people’s pets alike have also suffered greatly. This Palestinian woman has gone to great lengths to keep her pet cats with her and alive, despite the hardship.
From farms, to shelters, to residential homes, animals have been killed and injured during Israel’s carpet bombing in Gaza. Those that have survived, are on the brink of starvation or fall ill due to the lack of medicine and medical infrastructure. Palestinians who refuse to part with their beloved pets have seen the physical and psychological toll it takes on animals, especially from being displaced.
Israel has ordered yet another mass displacement, this time in parts of Deir el-Balah. Palestinians have been forced to relocate countless times, even though they know that nowhere in Gaza is safe.

Many reasonably criticize the US dollar’s hegemony worldwide and its role in keeping poorer countries subservient. However, did you know that there’s another imperialist currency? 14 African nations still use the CFA Franc, a currency imposed on them by France in the 1940s when they were still colonies. The value is pegged to the euro, so those African economies are still deprived of economic sovereignty to this day.

Indonesian police used heavy repression against protesters as the current uprising continues throughout the country. President Widodo’s office has issued statements downplaying the chaos, blaming misinformation rather than addressing the legitimate concerns of the protesters.
Widodo and the ruling elite have been trying to overturn an age restriction barring individuals under 30 from running for regional elections, which effectively sidelined President Widodo’s son, Kaesang, from running. However, due to the mass outrage, the court has upheld the regulation for now. Protesters say Widodo’s maneuvers are an attempt to consolidate a political dynasty.
These moves have sparked outrage among some parts of the population, who are increasingly fed up with nepotism and the manipulation of democratic processes. The recent promotion of Widodo’s elder son to vice president has only heightened accusations of power consolidation.

Today is the International Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. It serves to remind people across the world about the tragedy of the slave trade and the suffering it perpetuated. It was first observed in Haiti in 1998. On the eve of August 23, 1791, an uprising broke out in Haiti, leading to the establishment of the first Black republic, which played a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. To mark this day, we examine the history of slavery in Haiti.

In an exclusive interview with Abdulelah Hajar, a senior Yemeni diplomat and advisor to the Ansarallah-led Supreme Political Council, we explored the geopolitical situation of the global war on Yemen, and often overlooked factors such as China’s role.
Chinese-Yemeni relations date back to the Treaty of Friendship signed in 1958 between the then-Imam Muhammad Al-Badr and Chairman Mao Zedong. Chinese economic assistance and political advice for both northern and southern Yemen continued past Mao’s leadership, but dwindled in the late 1970s as China reoriented its foreign policy strategy.
Last year, we interviewed Abdulelah Hajar, a senior Yemeni diplomat and advisor to the Ansarallah-led Supreme Political Council, to explore these crucial issues. Watch the full interview here.

While the world is busy saying that “nothing can justify October 7,” it is turning a blind eye to the countless war crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian lawyer and political activist Diana Buttu doesn’t shy away from clearly saying where this has gotten us: “[...] the world tells us that nothing can justify October 7, and yet everything Israel has done can be justified by October 7.”

At least three Palestinians were killed as part of an Israeli incursion into the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military targeted a house in the camp with an airstrike as Palestinian resistance fighters attempted to fend off the invasion. Since October 7 alone, at least 637 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank.
As part of the incursion, Israeli forces deployed snipers on rooftops and sent in bulldozers, deliberately causing severe damange to infrastructure. Meanwhile, the res!st@nce fighters said that they “continue to clash with the occupation forces” and “have achieved direct hits among them.”
Several other Israeli raids have been conducted across the West Bank, clashing with Palestinians. Just last month, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as unlawful. It said it should end “as rapidly as possible.”

“These countries are not underdeveloped. They’re overexploited.” — Watch socialist historian Michael Parenti perfectly get to the point of the myth of “underdevelopment” in the Global South. The wealth and so-called “development” of the Global North was only made possible by the continued exploitation of some of the richest countries in the world, be it India, the Congo, or the riches of Latin America.

Today is the anniversary of Nat Turner's 1831 slave rebellion, one of the most significant slave uprisings in the US. On August 21, 1831, Turner, an enslaved preacher, led a three-day uprising in Southampton County, Virginia. Slaves went from plantation to plantation, killing around 60 slave owners and white people and making the rebellion the deadliest slave uprising in US history.
On August 21, 1831 Turner gathered around 70 slaves and free Black people and went house to house freeing slaves and killing many of the white people they encountered using knives, hatchets, and blunt instruments. The rebellion was eventually defeated by the state militia.
Turner evaded capture for six weeks but was eventually put on trial, convicted, and executed on November 11, 1831. His body was dissected and his skin was sold to make souvenir purses. It would take a full civil war decades later to defeat the evil system of slavery in the US.
