Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh stormed the family home of ousted ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, demolishing and setting it ablaze. The house belonged to the country’s founding leader, as his daughter, Hasina, gave an online speech urging supporters to resist the interim government.
The house, once home to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding leader and Hasina’s late father, was turned into a museum after his assassination there in 1975. Protesters, some armed with sticks, hammers, and heavy machinery, called the site a “symbol of fascism.” A separate wave of attacks targeted homes and businesses linked to supporters of Hasina’s Awami League party.
Last year, Bangladesh witnessed one of its bloodiest uprisings since independence, with Hasina’s administration killing hundreds of student protesters before being overthrown. Hasina, accused of overseeing extrajudicial killings and suppressing opposition voices during her 15-year rule, has since lived in exile in India.

Displaced Gazans living in tents faced dire weather conditions last night. Freezing temperatures, rain, and strong winds blew away many makeshift shelters belonging to those whose homes were destroyed by Israeli bombing.
Khan Younis and beach areas were most affected. These areas already lack clean water and fuel and are now home to huge numbers of Gazans whose houses are now rubble. Israeli authorities continue to block the entry of some heavy machinery and tools needed for clearing debris, claiming the materials could have military use.

A mass burial of some 2,000 bodies took place in Goma, DR Congo, in the wake of the M23 rebels’ capture of the regional capital last week. At least 900 people were killed and almost 3,000 injured in the days of fighting leading up to Goma’s capture, according to the UN.
The humanitarian situation in the city of roughly three million people remains dire. Water has only partially been restored while there are medicine shortages as supply routes to Goma remain closed, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) told Anadolu Agency.
Even though the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, who captured Goma, declared a unilateral “humanitarian ceasefire” earlier this week, residents have continued to report sporadic shooting and looting. The Congolese government denounced the ceasefire as a “ploy” after the armed group launched yet another offensive yesterday.

On this day 42 years ago, the Israeli-run Christian right-wing organization Front for the Liberation of Lebanon from Foreigners (FLLF) carried out a car bombing outside the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) office in Beirut, Lebanon, causing more than 115 casualties.
The bombing marked just one of a series of deadly car bombings by the FLLF throughout Lebanon during the 1980s.
In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon, intending to evict the PLO from Lebanon. However, when the Israeli occupation failed to do so, they set up the FLLF to do their dirty work, killing hundreds of civilians along the way. Arabic slogans and marches are now banned at protests in Berlin as German police take its crackdown on pro-Palestine voices to yet another extreme. Worst of all, the new regulation is based on a lie spread by Germany’s Bild newspaper.
Ever since October 7, 2023, German mainstream media has made it its mission to smear the Palestine solidarity movement in Germany. As part of this smear campaign, pro-Palestine slogans heard at protests have been distorted to frame protests critical of Israel as anti-Semitic hate festivals.
After Bild journalist Iman Sefati shared a video of a Palestine solidarity protest, falsely claiming that protesters chanted, “Anyone who has a gun should shoot Jews with it or hand it over to Hamas,” Berlin police implemented the ban.
Meanwhile, German politicians are increasingly calling for a stricter crackdown on Palestine solidarity protests, with Berlin mayor Kai Wegner reportedly considering an all-out ban.

The plan, which amounts to ethnic cleansing, would place Gaza under US control.
Speaking at a press conference in Denmark, Albanese warned that Trump’s plan, announced in Washington alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, violates international law. She urged the international community to isolate the US for its reckless actions.

Clashes erupted as hundreds of Congolese nationals marched onto the EU mission in Pretoria, South Africa, to protest the EU’s complicity in the war in eastern DR Congo. This follows a “ceasefire” declaration by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in the conflict-ravaged eastern DR Congo.
Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged continued support for DR Congo despite growing calls in South Africa to withdraw its troops following the deaths of 14 South African soldiers in clashes with the advancing M23 rebels.
Most of the soldiers killed were part of a South African force deployed to eastern DR Congo in 2023, many fighting on the front lines against the M23 rebels.

Happy Birthday, Camilo Cienfuegos!
A Cuban revolutionary leader and one of Fidel Castro’s most trusted commanders, Cienfuegos fought in the Sierra Maestra moutains, led Column No. 2 “Antonio Maceo,” and won the Battle of Yaguajay. He then played a key role in liberating Havana, the final turning point in the overthrow of Batista.
He tragically died shortly after the revolution in a plane crash. It is said that Fidel loved him like a brother, calling him “the most noble, pure, and courageous” of the revolutionaries he fought with.
Before the revolution he was a student protest leader exiled by Batista’s dictatorship.
He ended up in the US as a farmworker and became involved in union struggles. He later headed to Mexico where he joined Fidel’s crew of revolutionaries that set sail for Cuba on the Granma.

CNN commentator and member of the Democratic Party, Bakari Sellers, responded to Trump’s statements about “removing” Palestinians from Gaza by blaming those who withheld their vote from Kamala Harris.
According to him, the situation for Palestinians would have been much better under Harris.

🟡 BREAKING: The Pentagon is drafting plans to withdraw all US troops from Syria, two defense officials told NBC News. US President Donald Trump and his advisers recently signaled interest in a pullout, prompting officials to prepare exit timelines of 30, 60, or 90 days.
Roughly 2,000 US troops were deployed to Syrian territory held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Ongoing clashes between the SDF and the Turkish-controlled Syrian National Army (SNA), coupled with Turkey’s threats of a military incursion into SDF-controlled areas, have heightened tensions.
With a full withdrawal of US troops from the region, analysts warn that the SDF could be left increasingly vulnerable, potentially escalating a new wave of violence.
Africa should unite and cut the US off from accessing any natural resources and minerals if it continues to threaten countries like South Africa, said Cabinet Minister Gwede Mantashe.
The comments were in response to recent threats from Donald Trump to impose sanctions on South Africa, supposedly because of discrimination against white people. This is a conspiracy propagated by Elon Musk and other corners of far-right online spaces.

Happy birthday to US civil rights activist Rosa Parks who was born on this day in 1913. In December 1955, she was arrested after refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in the southern US state of Alabama. Although Parks is well known for her role in launching the Civil Rights movement in the US her radical political beliefs have been largely ignored by the history books.
