Clashes broke out between students of South Africa’s Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and private security forces. Amid a worsening accommodation crisis, scores of students are left homeless and desperate, some even sleeping on campus floors. Particularly affected are students from outside the province.

Despite being academically accepted, many students say their residence applications have been left “pending” for weeks, with others outright declined without clear explanations.

Meanwhile, the university claims that its accommodations are full. “[...] we have reason to believe this is not the case. Many available spaces are not being allocated to students in need,” a student countered.

The crisis, an issue affecting students across the country, has hit first-year and returning students particularly hard, especially those who rely on campus accommodation and can’t afford private rentals.

Ecuadorians heading to the polls today are primarily concerned with rising crime. The number of violent deaths in the country has risen by 500% since the return of neoliberalism.

Polls indicate that leftist presidential candidate Luisa González is poised to secure first place but without a majority. This would necessitate a second round of voting in the coming months.

Reporters Without Borders acknowledged the funding but didn’t question its implications. So who is really using media as a tool to manufacture consent?

Today marks 60 years since the US began its air war on the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), commonly known as North Vietnam.

This move effectively escalated US involvement in the Vietnam War—a bloody war that the US would continue to wage for another decade.

Undeterred by the US bombing campaigns, the NLF would go on to continue its liberation struggle until the last US aircraft left the Southeast Asian country in 1975.

A family returns home in northern Gaza after Israel’s relentless bombing of civilian areas.

The ceasefire let people return—but to what? Now, Palestinians walk through the ruins, stepping over what used to be their rooms.

The walls are cracked, the house leans, and nothing is as it was. A Palestinian’s father’s home, standing for 500 years, is dust. But leaving isn’t an option. So they pull what they can from the rubble, rebuild what’s left, and start again.

Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh stormed the family home of ousted ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, demolishing and setting it ablaze. The house belonged to the country’s founding leader, as his daughter, Hasina, gave an online speech urging supporters to resist the interim government.

The house, once home to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding leader and Hasina’s late father, was turned into a museum after his assassination there in 1975. Protesters, some armed with sticks, hammers, and heavy machinery, called the site a “symbol of fascism.” A separate wave of attacks targeted homes and businesses linked to supporters of Hasina’s Awami League party.

Last year, Bangladesh witnessed one of its bloodiest uprisings since independence, with Hasina’s administration killing hundreds of student protesters before being overthrown. Hasina, accused of overseeing extrajudicial killings and suppressing opposition voices during her 15-year rule, has since lived in exile in India.

Thousands of fascists gathered in Budapest, Hungary, for the annual “Day of Honour” commemoration. Each year, neo-Nazi groups from across Europe come together to connect and remember a failed attempt in 1945 by German and Hungarian forces to escape the city’s siege by the Red Army.

The so-called “Day of Honour” is typically marked by neo-Nazi concerts and an annual “memorial hike.” This year, an estimated 4,000 participants took part in the hike, donning Waffen-SS uniforms and other fascist symbols.

A few hundred anti-fascists staged a counter-protest under heavy police surveillance. This follows 2023, when anti-fascist actions against the gathering overshadowed the event.

Today, we celebrate the birth of socialist poet, director, and playwright Bertolt Brecht, born on this day in 1898 in Augsburg, Germany. Brecht was heavily influenced by Marxism and used his work to serve as a call to revolution.

Brecht pioneered “dialectical theatre” to contrast with traditional theatre, which he saw as too passive and escapist. Through dialectical theatre, he wanted to challenge audiences to adopt a critical perspective of the realities of capitalism. He was known for his collective and collaborative approach to art, placing the worker at the center of his poetry and emphasizing class struggle.

Due to his political views, Brecht was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933 and later relocated to the US during World War II, where he was placed under strict FBI surveillance. He passed away in 1956 from a heart attack in Germany.

Foreign powers continue carving out spheres of influence in Syria, two months after the Assad administration’s collapse. Türkiye, likely the biggest beneficiary, is now planning to establish two new military bases in the country, according to local sources.

With the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led administration in Damascus strengthening ties with Türkiye, Ankara’s influence in Syria is expanding rapidly. Meanwhile, the US is drafting plans to withdraw all its troops from the country, raising questions about the balance of power in the region.

As foreign actors reposition themselves, the future of Syria remains uncertain. Will Türkiye consolidate control over key territories? How will other regional and global powers respond? The shifting landscape signals a new chapter in Syria’s long-running conflict.

Anti-Nazi partisan Lepa Svetozara Radić from modern-day Bosnia-Herzegovina was executed on this day in 1943. This photograph (AI-upscaled and colorized) was later found on the body of the German soldier who took it.

Amid a fierce battle, Radić used up all her ammunition. Undeterred, she called on her comrades to fight with their bare hands until overpowered by blows from German rifle butts.

She fought alongside her sister Dara in the 7th Partisan Company of the 2nd Krajina Detachment. On February 8, they were helping refugees, primarily women and children, escape the Nazi 369th and 7th SS Division.

Scheduled for hanging, as the rope was tightened around her neck, her captors offered her a chance at life if she revealed the names of her comrades. Her response was persistent; she was no traitor, and her comrades would reveal themselves when avenging her death.

Today, in Black History Month, we remember revolutionary socialist, guerrilla intellectual, and pan-African activist Walter Rodney.

In his landmark book “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa,” Rodney explained how European “development” was the flip side of African “underdevelopment.” He methodically examined how centuries of European colonial exploitation have exhausted Africa’s wealth while enriching the West.

Rodney developed a Marxist analysis of the pan-African liberation struggle that placed Black Power at its core and argued that only “under the banner of socialism and through the leadership of the working classes” could Africans break from imperialism and colonialism.

In 1980, he was assassinated by a car bomb, an attack widely believed to have been a political assassination orchestrated by the state.

Climate activists in Argentina are protesting against the government’s handling of the devastating forest fires in the Patagonia region.

Protesters condemned President Milei for attributing the blazes to Indigenous Mapuche communities. In reality, they are the victims of the large landowners and land speculators causing the fires, said the protesters yesterday.

Mapuche communities in Argentina and Chile have long been accused of “terrorism” and “extremism” when they protest against logging and mining companies that encroach on and destroy Mapuche territory.

The blockade has caused an estimated $1 trillion in damage and has been condemned by the majority of the world for 30 consecutive years. Despite the blockade’s devastating humanitarian effects, the Cuban revolution continues and the country boasts a higher average life expectancy, literacy rate, and lower infant mortality rate than the US.

Happy Birthday, Camilo Cienfuegos!

A Cuban revolutionary leader and one of Fidel Castro’s most trusted commanders, Cienfuegos fought in the Sierra Maestra moutains, led Column No. 2 “Antonio Maceo,” and won the Battle of Yaguajay. He then played a key role in liberating Havana, the final turning point in the overthrow of Batista.

He tragically died shortly after the revolution in a plane crash. It is said that Fidel loved him like a brother, calling him “the most noble, pure, and courageous” of the revolutionaries he fought with.
Before the revolution he was a student protest leader exiled by Batista’s dictatorship.

He ended up in the US as a farmworker and became involved in union struggles. He later headed to Mexico where he joined Fidel’s crew of revolutionaries that set sail for Cuba on the Granma.
