A 14-year-old boy named Emmett Till from a working-class neighborhood in Chicago was savagely murdered by white racists in Mississippi on this day 69 years ago. His crime? Being falsely accused of flirting with a white woman. Her husband, fueled by white supremacist hatred, teamed up with his half-brother to kidnap, torture, and brutally murder Emmett. Despite the overwhelming evidence, an all-white jury swiftly declared them both not guilty.
In a bold and heartbreaking act, Emmett’s mother insisted on an open casket funeral, forcing the world to confront the gruesome reality of her son’s murder. Emmett’s mutilated body became a grim symbol of the rot at the heart of American society. Read on.

Israeli occupation forces continue their attack on refugee camps across the West Bank and Jerusalem. Accompanied by military bulldozers, the military is destroying and besieging refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas. Israeli police are also raiding Anata and Shu'afat refugee camps in occupied Jerusalem, shooting tear gas and arresting several people.
Due to the siege on hospitals and the ongoing attack, it is still unknown how many people have been arrested so far. Palestinians have reported that field interrogations are being carried out by the invading forces. The death toll has risen to 10 people, with dozens injured.

Protests in the Indian state of West Bengal turned violent as major clashes between police and protesters erupted. The wave of protests over the rape and murder of a female junior doctor earlier this month in Kolkata continues. Protesters are demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition party to the chief minister’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) party in West Bengal, has largely co-opted the protests. The party has called for a 12-hour bandh (general strike) in the state to protest alleged police atrocities against protesters. Meanwhile, police accuse the BJP of trying to orchestrate large-scale violence.
During the 12-hour bandh, reports of clashes between BJP and TMC workers have sprung up. BJP leader Priyangu Pandey was shot at, with bombs hurled at the car he was traveling in. Pandey claims the incident was an attack by TMC workers in a joint conspiracy with the police.

Kenya’s political elite is trying to criminalize protests. The government is currently considering a bill that would give the police official authority to ban and crush protests, imposing fines and jail sentences for protesters.
Due to the recent uprising, the government was forced to scrap the Finance Bill, an IMF plan that would have significantly raised the cost of living. During the protests in June, more than 50 people were shot dead by the police and many more were abducted, with some people still missing.
While the Finance Bill was officially scrapped, Kenya’s top court suspended the ruling that denounced the bill as unconstitutional. This has sparked fears amongst Kenyans that the government will try to implement the law again. Nevertheless, Kenyans have said they will take to the streets should such an event occur.

Spain’s new border strategy? Running over boats with migrants. Watch as the Spanish Coast Guard tramples a boat carrying migrants from Morocco towards Spain.
The Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras reported that in the first five months of 2024, more than 5,000 people have died trying to reach Spain by sea. This represents a 700% increase when compared to the same period last year. A leader of Spain’s main opposition party has stated that Spain should deploy its military to “deal with” migrants trying to enter the country.
The UN and other NGOs report that the armed conflicts in Sudan and the entire Sahel region are pushing many more to opt for the risky journey to Spain and other European countries.
The EU border agency Frontex has long been accused of disregarding human rights abuses. A 2022 EU report accused the agency of systematically covering up such abuses in Greece, where officials had been pushing asylum seekers back to their origin country or abandoning them at sea.

The UN was forced to halt nearly all operations across the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s latest displacement orders. Virtually all movement of aid workers and aid within Gaza has stopped as Israel issued a displacement order for areas in Deir el-Balah, a critical center for aid workers.
Israel’s immediate displacement orders affected 15 sites hosting aid workers as well as four warehouses. Under the pretext of targeting “terror operatives” and working to dismantle the remaining “infrastructure” of Gaza’s ruling group, the Israeli military is effectively dismantling Gaza’s crucial aid network.
Following Israel’s invasion of the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, the UN was forced to relocate most of its personnel and operations to Deir el-Balah. The latest developments, coupled with Israel’s continued blockade of the enclave, only further exacerbate the dire situation, with over one million Palestinians at risk of imminent famine.

“We are not animals. Even animals have human rights!” — said a Rohingya protester in the world’s largest refugee camp. On August 25, tens of thousands protested the anniversary of the genocide against the ethnic group.
In 2017, the Myanmar armed forces started so-called “clearance operations,” killing thousands, burning down nearly 400 villages, and violently displacing at least 750,000 Rohingya to Bangladesh. Now, in the middle of a civil war, the Rohingya are facing an intensifying genocide.
The United Nations says it fears the Rohingya might face a repeat of the 2017 genocide. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk emphasized that the Rohingya are being attacked by both the junta and resistance forces.

On this day in 1913, the five-month long Dublin lockout, led by socialists Jim Larkin and James Connolly, began. Dublin's capitalist class waged war on workers who were living in some of the worst conditions in Europe, determined to destroy their union, the Irish Transport and General Workers Union (ITGWU).
The story is one of a pioneering attempt at building working class unity by creating one big union to represent all workers. This represented a step towards overthrowing capitalism and establishing a workers’ republic in Ireland. After betrayal by Britain’s trade union leadership, Irish workers lost this battle. But out of its ashes, a growing trade union movement was born as well as the Irish Citizen’s Army, which would lead the first major challenge to British rule three years later.

Thousands of people rallied in several cities in Indonesia over the weekend, continuing the uprising from last week. Protesters are pressuring the election commission to issue new rules for regional voting amid attempts by parliamentary allies of President Joko Widodo to change them in their favor.
The biggest protest was outside the Indonesian parliament in Jakarta, where police forces attacked protesters, fired tear gas, and used water canons in an attempt to disperse the crowds.

The genocide in Gaza has left no form of life untouched. In addition to the immense human suffering in the Strip, animals and people’s pets alike have also suffered greatly. This Palestinian woman has gone to great lengths to keep her pet cats with her and alive, despite the hardship.
From farms, to shelters, to residential homes, animals have been killed and injured during Israel’s carpet bombing in Gaza. Those that have survived, are on the brink of starvation or fall ill due to the lack of medicine and medical infrastructure. Palestinians who refuse to part with their beloved pets have seen the physical and psychological toll it takes on animals, especially from being displaced.
Israel has ordered yet another mass displacement, this time in parts of Deir el-Balah. Palestinians have been forced to relocate countless times, even though they know that nowhere in Gaza is safe.

Many reasonably criticize the US dollar’s hegemony worldwide and its role in keeping poorer countries subservient. However, did you know that there’s another imperialist currency? 14 African nations still use the CFA Franc, a currency imposed on them by France in the 1940s when they were still colonies. The value is pegged to the euro, so those African economies are still deprived of economic sovereignty to this day.

Israeli occupation forces have launched a new military operation across the West Bank in a new attempt to crush the resistance. The operation started at dawn and targeted refugee camps in the West Bank. While most of the the raids ending within a few hours, the raids in the cities of Jenin and Tulkarem are still ongoing.
At least nine Palestinian were killed, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The Israeli forces also continue to besiege the four main hospitals in Jenin and Tulkarem. By preventing treatment of injured people, they are effectively causing more casualties. This is similar to their policy of attacking health facilities in Gaza.
The refugee camps across the West Bank have been a hub of resistance and have experienced painful attacks from the invading Israeli forces. With limited resources, the fighters have developed their tools and tactics from only firearms. With these modest means, they’ve developed explosives used to ambush Israeli military vehicles.

Watch Palestinian journalist Mariam Bargouti school BBC’s anchor for their misleading reporting on the genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank. She criticizes Western media’s adoption of Israel's perception-shaping policy regarding both of these events.
While Israel wages its genocidal war on Gaza, the ethnic cleansing and depopulation of Palestinian villages continues across the occupied West Bank. Supported and led by the Israeli government, settlers are taking advantage of the world’s eyes being focused on Gaza.
Since October 7, At least 14 Palestinian communities in the West Bank have been completely displaced due to Israeli settler violence. 16 others have been partially displaced, according to the UN.
While global attention is on Gaza, Israel is also waging war in the West Bank, inflicting similar levels of destruction and crimes on Palestinians as in Gaza.

“Rape in the name of God” — these are the words of an Israeli settler who attacked a Palestinian family and threatened them with rape. A new video released by human rights organization B'Tselem documents an attack on a Palestinian family in South Hebron Hills in the occupied West Bank. During the attack, an Israeli settler threatened a Palestinian man with rape by mentioning Sde Teiman, the known Israeli torture center where soldiers rape Palestinian prisoners.
A recent military investigation was launched after a Palestinian prisoner was hospitalized, following sexual abuse by Israeli soldiers. This incident sparked widespread outrage, not against the alleged crime, but against the investigation itself. Some protests, reportedly supported by certain Israeli politicians, even defended the “'right” to rape Palestinian prisoners.

Chile’s iconic cop-biting riot dog Negro Matapacos (translated as Black Cop-Killer) died on this day in 2017. The stray dog showed up at student protests for free education in 2011, defying tear gas and water cannons and becoming an unwavering companion in student’s struggle.
Notably, he would only attack “pacos” (Chilean slang for “cops”), never students and protesters.
The image of the black dog in a red bandanna remains a symbol deeply ingrained in Chilean protest culture today. Matapacos’ presence continues to resonate in various forms, with signs and posters at protests with phrases like Estai Presente (“You’re Present”) and En Tu Memoria (“In Your Memory”).
Negro Matapacos passed away of natural causes on August 26, 2017.

Scores of Palestinians are fleeing Al-Aqsa Hospital, the last remaining functioning medical facility in central Gaza. The latest death march, including patients and displaced Palestinians, comes as the Israeli army has ordered the forcible displacement from areas in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, previously designated as “safe zones.”
The Gaza Government Media Office later confirmed that Al-Aqsa Hospital is not within the affected areas. With nearby areas being affected, however, many have been compelled to flee the hospital, fearing an impending attack on the hospital.
All of Gaza’s 36 hospitals have already previously come under repeated attacks, including raids, by Israeli forces. As a result, only 16 hospitals remain functioning across the entire Strip.

At least 50 Bangladeshis were injured in clashes between students and paramilitary members.
The clashes occurred after members of the Ansar paramilitary group took several students, including a student leader and advisor in the interim government, hostage. Student protest coordinator Hasnat Abdullah stated that “autocratic forces are trying to make a comeback through the Ansar force.”
Bangladesh’s student-led uprising that toppled the fascist Hasina has resulted in an interim government led by liberal reformer Muhammad Yunus. Yunus recently announced that elections will be held after reforms are carried out in the electoral system and judiciary. He has not given a deadline for said elections.

Happy Birthday to the undefeated revolutionary military leader, Võ Nguyên Giáp !The Vietnamese People's Army general helped to defeat US imperialism and French colonialism. He was nicknamed “Red Napoleon” by the West – a flawed Eurocentric comparison because, unlike Napoleon, Giáp never lost a war.
The son of the village teacher who grew up to become an army leader, he taught painful lessons to the best French and US generals who possessed lots of experience with colonialist wars.
He lead the Vietnamese revolutionary forces in World War II, the Vietnam War in 1945, the First Indochina War, the US war against Vietnam in 1955, the Vietnam-Cambodia War, and the Sino-Vietnamese War. The Communist Party of Vietnam celebrates Giáp for leading an “army of a small and backward colonial country” to victory against the “professional army of a powerful colonialist-imperialist force.”
