Today would have been Marielle Franco’s 45th birthday, a fearless, anti-racist Afro-Brazilian politician who was assassinated in 2018, only 18 months into her election for a seat in the Rio de Janeiro City Council.
As a Black woman and single mother, she dedicated her life to defending those who shared her fate in the favelas (Brazil’s slums). She also took aim against racist police violence, which was fueled by fascist President Jair Bolsonaro.
Her killers assassinated her on March 4, 2018 in her car. They were eventually exposed as part of the state apparatus: two former police officers with ties to Bolsonaro. Three people were finally arrested in March of this year, after six years of fighting for justice. Among those arrested was former head of Rio de Janeiro's civil police, Rivaldo Barbosa.

Today, 71 years ago, the first bullet of the Cuban Revolution was fired. It was on this day that Fidel Castro led the assault on the Moncada Barracks serving the US-backed Fulgencio Batista dictatorship. The attack, aimed at capturing weapons, backfired, and most of the revolutionaries were killed or arrested, including Castro.
The symbolic and daring action gave birth to the guerrilla organization that later carried the date of the attack on the barracks as its name: Movimiento 26 de Julio (Movement of July 26) better known as M-26-7. Watch this interview of Fidel Castro arguing that armed struggle was the only path to liberation for the vast majority of Latin American countries.

More than 60 targets across the Gaza Strip have been subject to Israeli attacks over the past day. The number of Palestinians killed as a result of Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza now stands at at least 39,145. The estimated number, however, likely exceeds 186,000.
Israeli attacks across the enclave, from north to south, do not seem to stop. In Gaza’s north, residential houses are being increasingly targeted. In the middle area, intensive artillery shelling and strikes continue to target refugee camps, forcing many people to flee even despite the absence of “official” displacement orders.
In the southern Gaza Strip, meanwhile, Israel’s latest ground operation enters its fifth consecutive day. Israeli forces have killed at least 129 Palestinians in those five days alone. The official death toll, however, is likely to increase since Civil Defense teams and paramedics have been unable to reach any of the eastern parts of Khan Younis for more than five days now.

On July 28, 1915, the US invaded Haiti, starting a brutal 19-year occupation of the country. Conducted for selfish economic reasons and racist motives, the US waged two brutal wars against the native population, murdering thousands. American corporations were unable to accept Haitian independence while racist elements in US society, including slave owners, had never forgiven Haitians for launching the first successful Black rebellion against slavery. Even when US troops left in 1934, Washington retained influence over Haiti’s finances until 1947. Read on.

Nicolás Maduro held a giant campaign rally as Venezuelans prepare to vote this Sunday in presidential elections. In the shadow lingers US intervention and sanctions.
Maduro is the candidate of the “Great Patriotic Pole,” an alliance of leftist parties that includes the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela, the Communist Party, and others. However, there has been controversy over the fact that the smaller leftist groups in the coalition are mostly parallel groups created by Maduro supporters.
In the case of the Communist Party, its official leadership broke with Maduro years ago. However, a minority pro-government faction created a parallel communist party and was given legal recognition by the state as the official communist party in the country.
The country has enjoyed a small economic recovery in recent years and no longer has the highest inflation in the region - a title now held by Milei’s Argentina. However, the issue of low wages and unofficial dollarization persists.

The Trump shooting was shocking? The CIA tried 634 times to kill Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban revolution, to destroy the socialist project, according to Cuban security authorities. Every attempt failed. Today the island is celebrating the 71st anniversary of the start of the Cuban Revolution on July 26, 1953.
Exploding cigars, a contaminated diving suit, poisoned drinks, poisoned pens, paramilitary invasions, CIA-built special weapons, assassination plots with the Cuban Mafia, and other things beyond imagination, Washington's intelligence service tried under several US administrations to eliminate Castro. He lived to the age of 90, dying of natural causes in 2016.

The death toll from Bangladesh’s ongoing unprecedented wave of protests has risen above 200 amid an escalating police crackdown on anti-government protesters and opposition activists. Over the past eight days, police have arrested around 4,500 people, including 1,400 on Wednesday alone.
The total communications blackout and curfew, including a “shoot-on-sight” order, have been partially eased in some parts of the capital, Dhaka. However, the situation is far from normal. Mobile internet and social media remain blocked, and universities are still closed.
The student protests began in July against nepotism in government jobs, which are among the few stable jobs for many people. Although the government met the protesters’ initial demands, the brutal crackdown has led to renewed demands and many others joining the protests.
Student leaders have paused protest mobilization until Friday, but tensions remain high as the populace continues to grapple with the government’s harsh response.

Standing ovation for genocide – After nine months of genocidal war in the Gaza Strip and probably more than 186,000 Palestinians killed, this is how the US Congress celebrates Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As Netanyahu reiterates his desire to continue his so-called war “between barbarism and civilization,” he is met with a standing ovation from hundreds of Members of Congress. Just in case you weren’t sure by now, the US is undoubtedly on the side of genocide.

A police officer was seen stomping on a boy’s head while a taser already subdued him in a disturbing viral video from Manchester, UK. In the 40-second clip, the boy, lying on the ground, shows no resistance as the officer repeatedly attacks him.
Greater Manchester Police said their unit had responded to an “altercation” at Manchester Airport. They justified the violence by claiming “there was a clear risk during this assault of their firearms being taken away,” but did not address the excessive force used against the seemingly compliant suspect.
Amar Rafiq, the eyewitness who filmed the incident, told local press, “I was just gobsmacked. The police officer kicked the guy in the face. Everyone was worried about themselves; they started panicking and running away, fearing they would be attacked.”

Project 2025: A new strategy of the far-right? Or just the same old conservative agenda?
Liberals are using fears of this document to scare people into voting Democrat and ignoring their anger over Biden’s total support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This is an especially cynical move when one remembers that liberals are to blame for this rise of this ultra-conservative agenda.
