Today, in Black History Month, we remember the youngest person to be executed in the US during the 20th century: 14-year-old Black boy George Stinney.
Convicted of murder by an all-white jury after only 10 minutes in court, Stinney was completely innocent. He was accused of killing two missing white girls.
It took seven decades until the court recognized that he was deprived of due process and that his alleged confession was not credible.

US and Republic of Korea (ROK) troops are once again staging large-scale combined live-fire drills near the inter-Korean border. The ROK Army says their purpose is to enhance the allies’ joint operational capabilities and help the US military’s rotational Stryker unit adjust to conditions on the Korean Peninsula as tensions remain high.
According to the ROK Army, the three-week exercise held 30 kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) involves around 2,000 troops and over 150 pieces of military hardware. Meanwhile, the DPRK has repeatedly warned this year that it will respond strongly to any hostile US provocations.
Simultaneously, a US Navy fast-attack nuclear submarine has docked in Busan, ROK. The DPRK condemned the move, stating, “We express grave concern over the US dangerous hostile military act that can lead the acute military confrontation in the region around the Korean Peninsula to an actual armed force conflict.”

Two mass graves, containing up to 89 migrants, have been discovered in the deserts of northeastern and southern Libya. Some of the bodies bore gunshot wounds, the UN confirmed.
Traffickers frequently use the Libyan desert route to the shores of the Mediterranean to smuggle people to Europe. Libya remains one of the main transit points for African migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean.
Meanwhile, the EU bankrolls Libyan forces that hunt down refugees, with kidnapping, torture and forced detention as routine practices. The EU aims to prevent them from reaching Europe, where, by law, they have the right to seek asylum.
According to IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, out of the 965 recorded deaths and disappearances in Libya in 2024, more than 22% occurred on land routes.

A group of Neo-Nazi protesters was chased out of town by residents in Lincoln Heights, a Black-majority neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the US.
Residents were also able to seize their flag and burn it. The Nazi group involved is believed to be a sect called “Hate Club 1488”.
The small group of Nazis held up swastika flags and displayed guns in Lincoln Heights but soon escaped when the local community came out in greater numbers, some with firearms to protect residents.

The American money transfer service Western Union has indefinitely suspended remittance services to Cuba. This decision follows the Trump administration’s reinstatement of the Cuba Restricted List, which now includes Orbit S.A., the Cuban entity responsible for processing Western Union payments.
US companies are now prohibited from conducting business with Orbit S.A. As part of sanctions that “prohibits certain transactions with companies under the control of, or acting for or on behalf of, the repressive Cuban military, intelligence, or security services or personnel.”
The Cuban economy received almost $2 billion in remittances in 2023. The disappearance of these services is designed to hurt Cuba’s economy and impoverish ordinary citizens.
Other decisions have included placing Cuba back on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, a move that will deter investment in the country and eliminate any chance of sanctions relief.

Thousands of fascists gathered in Budapest, Hungary, for the annual “Day of Honour” commemoration. Each year, neo-Nazi groups from across Europe come together to connect and remember a failed attempt in 1945 by German and Hungarian forces to escape the city’s siege by the Red Army.
The so-called “Day of Honour” is typically marked by neo-Nazi concerts and an annual “memorial hike.” This year, an estimated 4,000 participants took part in the hike, donning Waffen-SS uniforms and other fascist symbols.
A few hundred anti-fascists staged a counter-protest under heavy police surveillance. This follows 2023, when anti-fascist actions against the gathering overshadowed the event.

Today, we celebrate the birth of socialist poet, director, and playwright Bertolt Brecht, born on this day in 1898 in Augsburg, Germany. Brecht was heavily influenced by Marxism and used his work to serve as a call to revolution.
Brecht pioneered “dialectical theatre” to contrast with traditional theatre, which he saw as too passive and escapist. Through dialectical theatre, he wanted to challenge audiences to adopt a critical perspective of the realities of capitalism. He was known for his collective and collaborative approach to art, placing the worker at the center of his poetry and emphasizing class struggle.
Due to his political views, Brecht was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933 and later relocated to the US during World War II, where he was placed under strict FBI surveillance. He passed away in 1956 from a heart attack in Germany.

Over 110,000 people in eastern DR Congo are left stranded after the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels forcibly shut down settlement camps in the contested region. After seizing Goma, the armed group gave displaced people 72 hours to leave and return home, saying their priority was to restore normalcy, the UN said.
At least 500,000 people have been displaced in the region following the M23’s advance, according to the International NGOs Forum. Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, was hosting close to a million displaced people before the latest escalation in fighting.
The M23 rebels, the most prominent of over 100 armed groups vying for control of the DR Congo’s mineral-rich east, continue to advance towards South Kivu province despite international calls for a ceasefire.

Ecuador’s leftist presidential candidate, Luisa Gonzalez, came joint first in a “technical tie” with President Daniel Noboa in yesterday’s presidential elections. The two will head to a second round in April amid a climate of persecution and dirty tricks used against the left.
Despite numerous obstacles, including the exile of Rafael Correa, the jailing of party leaders such as Jorge Glas, and the mobilization of state resources for Noboa’s campaign, González was able to pull off one of the highest vote tallies for a Correísta candidate.

Clashes broke out between students of South Africa’s Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and private security forces. Amid a worsening accommodation crisis, scores of students are left homeless and desperate, some even sleeping on campus floors. Particularly affected are students from outside the province.
Despite being academically accepted, many students say their residence applications have been left “pending” for weeks, with others outright declined without clear explanations.
Meanwhile, the university claims that its accommodations are full. “[...] we have reason to believe this is not the case. Many available spaces are not being allocated to students in need,” a student countered.
The crisis, an issue affecting students across the country, has hit first-year and returning students particularly hard, especially those who rely on campus accommodation and can’t afford private rentals.
