Germany plans to deploy around 25 police officers to the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza as part of an EU mission, with some 15 more potentially sent to the West Bank. Notorious for ruthlessly cracking down on Palestinian voices at home, German police are now being sent to Palestine under the guise of “peacekeeping.”
“A security architecture must be created that prevents Hamas from regaining control of the Gaza Strip,” a government spokesperson said, emphasizing that both missions—in Gaza and the West Bank—serve this objective. However, the exact timing and size of Germany’s contribution remain to be decided.
Last month, the EU resumed its civilian mission at Rafah with personnel from Spain, Italy, and France to help secure the crossing. Meanwhile, the EUPOL COPPS mission in the West Bank aims to support the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) police force, also known for suppressing dissent against Israeli occupation.

Students across Serbia are marching 150 kilometers to the central Serbian city of Kragujevac in protest of the government. The march is part of the several months-long uprising in Serbia that started when the canopy of a recently renovated train station collapsed, killing 15 people.
The students will arrive on Saturday on Serbia’s Statehood Day, a public holiday which marks the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising launched against the Ottoman Empire in 1804.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula continue to rise as inter-Korean relations worsen. The Republic of Korea (ROK) said that the DPRK has begun demolishing facilities used for reunions of families separated by the Korean War—the last remaining ROK-owned structures in the inter-Korean tourism zone and a key symbol of past cooperation.
The reunion center hosted family reunions since 2009, with the last such event held in 2018. The demolition is a result of the collapse of the 2019 Hanoi summit and years of worsening inter-Korean relations under far-right ROK President Yoon Suk Yeol thereafter.
While the ROK condemns the demolition as an “inhumane act”—framing it as a one-sided escalation—the DPRK’s policy shift comes amid a series of provocations from the ROK, not least including the increased conduction of unprecedented military drills aimed at constraining the DPRK.

Today, in 1968, 200 Black American sanitation workers in Memphis launched a strike against racial injustice and for workers’ rights following their colleague’s death caused by dangerous workplace conditions. As the movement grew in momentum, it faced brutal repression from authorities and racist attacks, also resulting in the death of civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.
However, the protests were not dying down, with thousands in the streets demanding their equal rights, giving birth to the iconic civil rights movement slogan “I Am a Man.” But did the Memphis Sanitation Strike ultimately succeed? Read on.

🟡 BREAKING: German universities have banned lectures by Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories. Earlier this week, the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) canceled Albanese’s scheduled talk, followed by the Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin).
The planned event in Berlin was aimed at “critical conversations about the reality in Palestine and the broader struggle for justice.” It stated, “All proceeds will be donated to UNRWA and Medico International for emergency relief in Gaza.”
This decision sets a troubling precedent for German universities. The bans violate Article 5 of the German Constitution, which explicitly guarantees the freedom of “the arts and sciences, research, and teaching.”
Ohio police did not arrest neo-Nazis because “no laws were broken,” said a police lieutenant at a town hall yesterday.
On Friday, police shielded the racist group waving Nazi flags in the US so they could escape from furious community members. The police can be seen escorting the white supremacists to their cargo truck to flee the scene.
The events unfolded the same day that community members set up patrols and checkpoints to chase the neo-Nazis out of another part of town.

Today, in Black History Month, we remember the youngest person to be executed in the US during the 20th century: 14-year-old Black boy George Stinney.
Convicted of murder by an all-white jury after only 10 minutes in court, Stinney was completely innocent. He was accused of killing two missing white girls.
It took seven decades until the court recognized that he was deprived of due process and that his alleged confession was not credible.

US and Republic of Korea (ROK) troops are once again staging large-scale combined live-fire drills near the inter-Korean border. The ROK Army says their purpose is to enhance the allies’ joint operational capabilities and help the US military’s rotational Stryker unit adjust to conditions on the Korean Peninsula as tensions remain high.
According to the ROK Army, the three-week exercise held 30 kilometers south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) involves around 2,000 troops and over 150 pieces of military hardware. Meanwhile, the DPRK has repeatedly warned this year that it will respond strongly to any hostile US provocations.
Simultaneously, a US Navy fast-attack nuclear submarine has docked in Busan, ROK. The DPRK condemned the move, stating, “We express grave concern over the US dangerous hostile military act that can lead the acute military confrontation in the region around the Korean Peninsula to an actual armed force conflict.”

Two mass graves, containing up to 89 migrants, have been discovered in the deserts of northeastern and southern Libya. Some of the bodies bore gunshot wounds, the UN confirmed.
Traffickers frequently use the Libyan desert route to the shores of the Mediterranean to smuggle people to Europe. Libya remains one of the main transit points for African migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean.
Meanwhile, the EU bankrolls Libyan forces that hunt down refugees, with kidnapping, torture and forced detention as routine practices. The EU aims to prevent them from reaching Europe, where, by law, they have the right to seek asylum.
According to IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, out of the 965 recorded deaths and disappearances in Libya in 2024, more than 22% occurred on land routes.

On this day in 1991, the US Air Force precision bombed a civil defense shelter in the Amiriyah neighborhood of Baghdad, Iraq, killing at least 408 civilians.
Throughout the US-led Gulf War air campaign, over 88,000 tons of bombs were dropped over Iraq in a matter of only five weeks, effectively bombing the Middle Eastern country back to the stone age.
Unfortunately, the bombing just marked the beginning of what would go on to be a series of countless war crimes committed by the US and its allies in Iraq, as a decade later, they would go on to invade and devastate the country for years to come.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth says that returning to pre-2014 Ukrainian borders is an “illusionary” goal. At a meeting with foreign ministers of the Ukraine Defense Group, he emphasized such an objective was “unrealistic” and would “only prolong the war and cause more suffering.”
Since the start of the Russian invasion, the US alone has sent Ukraine $66 billion to fund the war effort. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people in Ukraine and Russia have died.

Over 110,000 people in eastern DR Congo are left stranded after the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels forcibly shut down settlement camps in the contested region. After seizing Goma, the armed group gave displaced people 72 hours to leave and return home, saying their priority was to restore normalcy, the UN said.
At least 500,000 people have been displaced in the region following the M23’s advance, according to the International NGOs Forum. Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, was hosting close to a million displaced people before the latest escalation in fighting.
The M23 rebels, the most prominent of over 100 armed groups vying for control of the DR Congo’s mineral-rich east, continue to advance towards South Kivu province despite international calls for a ceasefire.

“If the only alternative is violence, we will use violence.”—Listen to this passage from Nelson Mandela’s address to the Palestinian Assembly in Gaza, a statement that continues to be as relevant now as it has ever been.
Today marks 34 years since his release from prison. Nine years later, the South African anti-Apartheid revolutionary visited Gaza in what many described as a symbol of hope to Palestinians.
