The Egyptian revolution of July 23, 1952, was the fulfillment of a great hope that the Egyptian people had cherished since the modern era when Egyptians began to struggle for their self-determination and that they must take control of their destiny.
72 years ago today, young military officers who called themselves the “Free Officers” and were seen as a conspiratorial cell seized power in a near-bloodless coup d’état—their goal: the overthrow of the monarchy and the realization of a powerful Arab nationalism.

Thousands of anti-government protesters swarmed the streets of Quezon City against Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Junior. The mobilization centered on resistance against the looming all-out military escalation between the US and China – a conflict that threatens to entangle the Philippines.
In April 2024, the US and the Philippines held the largest-ever war simulation, with 11,000 US troops and 5,000 Filipino soldiers. Also this year, the US military expanded from five to nine bases in the Philippines.
A newly signed military agreement between Manila and Tokyo has further complicated matters, allowing Japanese soldiers to enter Philippine territory. Both nations cited the escalating conflict with China as justification for this move.
Protesters also highlighted their opposition to increasing Chinese aggression in the South China Sea, where dangerous confrontations between the Chinese Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard have become a regular occurrence.

red. media captured the moments Israeli bombardment targeted a building in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza today. The past week alone, the Israeli military has struck the camp 63 times, killing at least 91 Palestinians and injuring 251 others.
In what the UN described as Gaza’s “deadliest week” since October 7, Nuseirat refugee camp was not spared. The camp, which is one of eight official refugee camps in the enclave, has seen near-daily Israeli attacks. Multiple UNRWA-run schools and residential buildings have been targeted.
Coupled with Israel’s nonstop bombardment and constant displacement orders, scores of Palestinians have sought shelter in the camp. An estimated 250,000 Palestinians are sheltering there at present.

A racist was put to sleep on a London train after repeatedly threatening a young Black man. The racist threatened to break the nose of the Black man and insulted him by calling him “Afro-man.” Despite the white man’s aggressive behavior, other passengers remained silent. Only when the young Black man defended himself and knocked out the aggressor did the bystanders speak up.

While capitalism fails to stop the climate change-fueled weather extremes, we remember that Marxist theorists warned of the destructive consequences of the ruthless plundering of our planet and the profit-driven mode of production as early as the 19th century.
Flash floods from China to Brazil engulf entire cities. Wildfires devour entire forests in several parts of the world. Record heatwaves prove fatal in many regions. The climate crisis could lead to 14.5 million deaths and $12.5 trillion in economic losses worldwide by 2050, warns the WEF.
The richest 1% account for the same emissions as the poorest 66% of humanity (5 billion people) in recent years, according to a recent OxFam report. “Oxfam undertook an analysis of 125 billionaires and found that, on average, they emitted 3m tonnes of CO2e a year through their investments – over a million times more than the average for someone in the bottom 90% of humanity.”

This iconic picture of an anti-fascist resistance fighter in Catalonia was taken 88 years ago today. The picture is of the 17-year-old communist Marina Ginestà during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, just three days after the military uprising of fascist general Franco against the socialist Second Republic. During the time of the picture, Marina was a member of the “Socialist Youth,” mainly directed by the Communist Party of Spain. As the war broke out, she served as a reporter and a translator assisting Mikhail Koltsov, a correspondent of the Soviet newspaper Pravda.

Happy birthday to Afro-Caribbean anti-colonial revolutionary Frantz Fanon! When he died at the young age of 36, his words had already inspired liberation movements worldwide.
Fanon was born 99 years ago in the former French colony of Martinique, part of the West Indies. Later, as a psychiatrist, Fanon analyzed the psychopathology structure of the colonial system and worked closely with the Algerian National Liberation Front, which fought against French colonial rule.
His flagship work, “The Wretched of the Earth,” became a classic of anti-colonial literature. Fanon's central argument was that the colonized needed to fight against their oppressors with all the means at their disposal.
In chapter one, Fanon wrote, "Colonialism is not a thinking machine, nor a body endowed with reasoning faculties. It is violence in its natural state and will only yield when confronted with greater violence.”

At least two people were killed and over a dozen wounded when Pakistani forces allegedly opened fire on protesters. Upwards of 10,000 people took to the streets in the city of Bannu against the government’s latest military operation in the region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
KP province, which borders Afghanistan, has seen a surge in violence in recent weeks, not least due to the military’s latest campaign purportedly aimed at countering violence and rooting out local militants along the border with Afghanistan.
Pakistan’s powerful military, which analysts say holds large sway over the government, has been conducting military operations in the area for years. A clearance operation launched against the country’s Taliban in 2014 has displaced hundreds of thousands and destroyed countless homes and businesses. It has thus far failed to bring peace to the border region and has instead triggered wide discontent among the local population.

The Israeli parliament’s resolution against recognizing the Palestinian state adds a new chapter to the darkest periods in Israel’s history. A staggering 89% of the Knesset voted in favor of this resolution, labeling Palestine as “an existential danger.”
This resolution poses an undeniable reality check for Western countries that continue to advocate for a two-state solution, standing in direct opposition to Israel’s position on the matter. However, for the occupied territories, it’s nothing more than the “new-old,” with Israel never respecting the 1993 Oslo Accords, occupying more and more land in the West Bank ever since.
The Knesset debate saw extraordinary scenes, with Aida Touma-Sliman calling on international states to recognize the Palestinian state, condemning Israel’s “fascist, crazy government” and its “colonialism and apartheid.” Her speech was met with interruptions and walkouts by other Knesset members.

Riots erupted last night in the working-class neighborhood of Harehills in the city of Leeds, UK. The local community attacked police, destroyed their cars and set fires in the area.
The incident began after police confiscated five Roma children from their family over alleged safety concerns. One of the children was admitted to a hospital with an injury.
The parents say that the injury was not due to mistreatment, and the rest of the local community quickly rallied against the authorities.
Harehills is one of the poorest areas of the country, hit hard by more than a decade of austerity measures. Roma communities have emphasized that their children are more likely than others to be separated by social services due to the discrimination they face.
Far-right accounts in the US and Europe immediately pounced on the situation, claiming that “Muslims” and “immigrants” were behind the clashes, and thereby whipping up racism.

A historic deal has been signed between Palestine’s two main political parties, Hamas and Fatah, and 12 other Palestinian groups. The deal, signed after three days of talks in China, aims to end decades of national division among Palestine’s many factions and lay the groundwork for Palestinian rule in post-war Gaza. However, whether the deal, dubbed the Beijing Declaration, will succeed in its goals remains to be seen.

A monument celebrating Soviet-Polish unity in defeating Nazi Germany has been torn down in the town of Nowogard in northwestern Poland. This is one of many Soviet-era statues to be torn down in the country ever since the war in Ukraine began, many of them commemorating the victory against fascism during WWII.
The right-wing “Institute of National Remembrance” in Poland, who oversaw the destruction of the Nowogard monument yesterday, says that in 2022 there were over 60 Soviet monuments throughout the country. Since then, almost 40 of them have been destroyed.

SREBRENICA’S LEGACY: WESTERN COMPLICITY IN GENOCIDE
Every July 11, we remember the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of more than 8,000 Bosniaks. However, the West’s role in this atrocity and their ongoing hypocrisy are frequently omitted. The US, UK, and France's betrayal in Srebrenica was used to justify NATO's first aggressive military campaign, paving the way for further geopolitical domination of the region.
This year, more than any, the emptiness of the West’s “condemnation” of the Bosnian genocide was on full display given its current support of Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
In the decades since the wars related to the break-up of Yugoslavia ended, many have asked, perplexed: how could a country where various nations lived in relative peace end in such bloodshed—a country that was formed in the wake of and due to multi-national resistance to the Nazi occupation during World War II? The answer lies at the crossroads of economics and history.

Thousands of Palestinians are being forced to flee eastern Khan Younis as the Israeli military unleashes a total assault on the area. This comes after the latest displacement order affecting more than 400,000 people. In just one day, the Israeli blitz assault has killed at least 81 Palestinians and injured more than 250.
Israel’s latest assault on Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip involving tanks, aircraft, and artillery came just minutes after the Israeli military ordered the displacement of people residing in what it had previously designated a “humanitarian zone.” The new displacement order has now shrunk Gaza’s already overly crowded al-Mawasi “humanitarian zone” by 15%.
Almost 83% of the Gaza Strip is now under displacement orders or designated as “no-go zones” by the Israeli military. Despite the existence of a “humanitarian zone” in al-Mawasi, it is not immune from frequently occurring Israeli attacks.

Police cars crash into and run over protesters during the ongoing extreme political unrest that dominates Bangladesh for the second week. Footage shows police cars striking protesters head-on and in reverse, with deadly consequences.
The horrifyingly violent response of the security forces turned what were originally peaceful protests against the country’s elitist labor market and unemployment into a full-scale uprising. Over 100 protesters are dead, with the real numbers likely obscured by the government’s ongoing total communications blackout.

Deadly student protests in Bangladesh are likely to continue despite the government’s scrapping of most of the government job quotas. The quota reinstatement ignited the anti-government protests that have left more than 100 students dead.
The Supreme Court said that 93% of government jobs will now be based on merit. Student leaders, however, have vowed to carry on with the protests, demanding the release of imprisoned protesters and the resignation of government officials who they say are responsible for the violence.
While there are reports of Dhaka’s streets having returned to a state of relative peace, the government-imposed curfew (extended for an indefinite period) coupled with a complete internet shutdown has led to an information blackout and disruption of day-to-day life. Police are allegedly using the situation to arrest key organizers of the protests.

Nonstop Israeli shelling has been plaguing Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip as Israel orders 400,000 Palestinians to leave eastern Khan Younis. Local sources say that residents were given no time to flee as Israel’s assault began shortly after the leaflets were dropped. At least 27 Palestinians have been killed as a result so far.
Nasser Hospital, the only remaining main hospital providing services to patients in the southern Gaza Strip, is facing severe shortages, which the Palestinian Health Ministry describes as posing “a serious threat to the lives of the sick and injured in light of the ongoing massacres carried out by the occupation forces against the innocent and civilians.”
Just a week earlier, Israeli forces attacked the al-Mawasi “safe zone” in western Khan Younis, forcing people to seek safety in the east. Now, Israel is forcibly displacing them back to the west again.

Naji al-Ali, the renowned Palestinian political cartoonist and creator of the iconic “Handala” character was shot in the neck 37 years ago on July 22 in London. Many believe his assassin was working with the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
Regarding his signature creation, Handala, al-Ali remarked, “This child, as you can see, is neither beautiful, spoiled, nor even well-fed. He is barefoot like many children in refugee camps.” Naji al-Ali is still the most popular artist in the Arab world.
According to his editor, Naji al-Ali received over 100 death threats throughout his career. He was one of the most influential voices on Palestinian issues. Al-Ali’s death marked the end of an era coinciding ironically with the dawn of the First Intifada in occupied Palestine.

“It’s a war now.” – On Friday, a telecommunications blackout isolated Bangladesh from the rest of the world, as the nation of 170 million braced for escalating violence following days of intensifying clashes between students and security forces.
After the deadliest day of ongoing student uprisings in Dhaka, Bangladesh prepared for even harsher crackdowns, including a total ban on all protests. The death toll has now reached 64.
The protests strongly echo the powerful student movements of the 1960s worldwide, with formations of hooded blocks uniformly wielding sticks or metal rods.
Student protesters stormed a jail, freed hundreds of inmates, and set it ablaze.
Over 100 police officers have been reported injured in the latest protests.
Hundreds of student protesters stormed the HQ of the state broadcaster, Bangladesh Television, and set it on fire.
Several official websites in Bangladesh appear to have been hacked. On the PM’s website, a message reads “It’s not a protest anymore. It’s a war now.”
Did you know women were at the forefront of the Sandanista uprising which overthrew the US-backed Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua on this day 45 years ago?
30% of guerrilla combatants were women. In Nicaragua’s first democratic elections in 1984, 67% of the women who voted in that election voted for the FSLN.
”The revolution cannot be done without the participation of women,” – FSLN Commander Doris Tijerino once said.

On this day 45 years ago, the socialist guerrilla Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional ended the rule of the US-backed Somoza clan in Nicaragua, which plundered one of the poorest countries in the region for 43 years.
However, the revolution faced the immense challenge of rebuilding the impoverished country, as the dictator left behind empty coffers and $1.5 billion in foreign debt. The Sandinista also faced US imperialism, which feared “another Cuba” in Central America, and sought to bring the revolution to its knees with devastating sanctions and funding the counter-revolutionary contras.
The new revolutionary political system survived, and life expectancy increased from 55 years in 1970 to 63 years in 1990. The women in Nicaragua during the Sandinista Revolution saw their way of life drastically change, emerging as active participants and leaders. The FSLN’s “National Literacy Crusade” reduced the national illiteracy rate from 50.35% to 12.9% in 1980.

Israel bombed yet another school in Gaza, bringing the number of school shelters targeted in recent days to nine. At the same time, the Bureij and Nuseirat refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip continued to be targeted by Israeli airstrikes. The official death toll from Israel’s relentless war on Gaza now stands at at least 38,848 people, with 89,459 injured.
Thousands upon thousands of displaced Palestinians continue to seek safety in school shelters across Gaza despite Israel’s repeated bombardment. As the humanitarian catastrophe intensifies, people are left with no option but to seek refuge in many of the schools-turned-shelters.
The dire situation is further exacerbated by Israel’s systematic destruction of water facilities coupled with the deliberate obstruction of aid. A new Oxfam report says that Israel’s actions have reduced the amount of water available in Gaza by 94%.
