Today 62 years ago, Algeria declared official independence from France after a long and arduous struggle led by the Algerian National Liberation Front. The armed struggle of the Algerians tore down a system of racial and religious segregation, political disenfranchisement, and economic oppression.

The armed struggle of the Algerian people gave birth to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, a nominally socialist state in North Africa that became a role model for other colonized peoples on the African continent and around the world.

ON THE FRONTLINES OF REVOLUTION: AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CPI (MAOIST)

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has overseen a policy of Hindu supremacy wherein Muslim communities are bulldozed, Muslim men are detained without cause, and mosques are destroyed to make way for Hindu temples. The result has been a seismic increase in Islamophobic attacks.

For decades, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has been waging a people’s war against the Indian state. The party, comprised of Indigenous peasants of the Dandakaranya forest, has played a critical role in the movement against Hindu-fascism in India, especially against the NRC and CAA laws targeting Muslims and non-Hindus.

red. media interviewed spokesperson Amrut about Modi’s Hindu-fascist policies, how the party was founded, and how they organize life within guerrilla zones.

Emerging from the aftermath of previous civil conflicts and the rise of a new (old) elite following Colombia's independence from Spanish colonialists, the guerrilla took up arms precisely 60 years ago today under the ELN banner. Read on to discover their journey.

A devastating Israeli air raid has hit yet another “safe zone” in Gaza, this time a residential building next to Nasser Hospital and a UNRWA school housing displaced Palestinians in the city of Khan Younis. The attack killed at least seven people, hospital authorities and witnesses say.

The brutal bombardment comes just days after Israel ordered the forced displacement of 250,000 Palestinians sheltering in eastern Khan Younis, pushing them into the central and western parts of the city, officially designated “safe zones.” Tens of thousands have sought shelter in and around Nasser Hospital, the only remaining main hospital providing services to patients in Khan Younis and Rafah.

The attack on the “safe zone” marks just the latest in Israel’s aimed targeting of the displaced. Throughout the past nine months, the Israeli military has continuously bombed displaced Palestinians, many of whom sought shelter in so-called “safe zones,” including people sheltering in UN-run schools.

Recent days have seen intense clashes between armed protesters and Turkish security forces in Turkish-occupied Syria. The deadly riots saw several attacks on Turkish-owned trucks and vehicles, the removal and burning of Turkish flags, and exchanges of fire with Turkish troops, leaving at least seven people dead.

The unrest comes amid a series of anti-Syrian pogroms in neighboring Türkiye as well as recent statements by Erdoğan indicating openness to the normalization of relations with Damascus, which represent a significant shift in Türkiye’s stance.

Northwest Syria is known for its strong opposition to President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Damascus. Many Syrians living there now fear that Ankara and its forces will abandon them in favor of Damascus.

Did you know that Saudi Arabia once had an influential communist movement? Born in the early 1930s among migrant and Saudi workers in the country’s booming oil industry, the movement became instrumental in forming Saudi Arabia’s first organized labor movement. Faced with increased state persecution, the communist movement became more militant in the 70s and played a crucial role in organizing the Muharram Intifada against the Saudi Monarchy.

The far-right Reform UK Party is projected to come in third place ahead of polls opening for the UK’s general election. Its leader, Nigel Farage, has long styled himself as a defender of the ordinary hard-working Brit. In reality, he is little more than a racist disciple of the greatest enemy of the British working class in modern history: Margaret Thatcher. In power, Farage would simply escalate the ruling class' war on working people.

Here is a summary of who Farage really is.

Anti-austerity protests have begun in Ecuador in what is likely to be a weeks or even months-long series of mass mobilizations. The trigger was the decision by the neoliberal Noboa government to cut all fuel subsidies, which will affect the price of public transport and food.

Ecuador’s largest union confederations have declared national mobilizations starting tomorrow. However, students and rank-and-file workers have begun the mobilizations early in the two largest cities, Quito and Guayaquil.

The last time that fuel subsidies were cut in Ecuador in 2019, on orders of the IMF, it triggered an Indigenous-led uprising that paralyzed the country for weeks. This time, the Indigenous confederation, CONAIE, has stated that they will join these mobilizations next week, stating, “The CONAIE will not protest for one or two hours, but rather until we get results, which is how we’ve always done it in this country.”

Violent anti-Syrian pogroms have broken out in several cities in Türkiye as crowds stormed onto the streets, damaging Syrian-owned property, including vehicles, shops, and houses, and hunting down Syrian residents throughout the night. At least 474 people were detained so far, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

The mass unrest originally began in Kayseri province in response to an allegation that a Syrian sexually assaulted a 7-year-old child. The riots quickly spread to other cities as xenophobic groups mobilized to attack Syrians, including many refugees, across the country.

Racist and anti-refugee, particularly anti-Syrian, violence in Türkiye has been on the rise for several years as the country delves ever deeper into economic crisis. Multiple anti-Syrian pogroms have taken place in recent years. With over three million Syrians residing in Türkiye, 62% of Syrian respondents recently polled reported not feeling safe in the country.

Violence intensifies in Haiti as Kenyan police begin operations in the country as part of the US-funded intervention against Haiti. A police station was raided on the outskirts of the capital as armed groups continued operating as normal without fear of the Kenyan intervention forces.

The issue of gang violence is the pretext used to justify the current intervention. However, the problem of gangs and armed groups is the result of the decades-long foreign destabilization of the country, particularly the rise in poverty and destruction of institutions that followed the 2004 US-backed coup against Aristide, the country’s first democratically elected president who also demanded reparations from the country’s former colonial power.

Happy birthday to the first democratically elected leader of today’s DR Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Black revolutionary Malcolm X once said, “Lumumba [is] the greatest Black man who ever walked the African continent. He didn’t fear anybody and had the people in power so scared they had to kill him.”

For his anti-imperialism and his vision of a united Congo, the CIA ordered his assassination but could not finish the job. The US and Belgium then covertly funneled cash & aid to rival politicians who organized a coup & arrested Lumumba, who was then beaten, tortured, and killed. Read on.

At least 39 were killed in anti-government riots in Kenya, almost twice the number previously reported by the government, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights watchdog. Protests broke out again in the early hours of this morning despite a massive police presence and early tear gas shelling.

In addition, KNCHR warned that more than 360 were injured in the nationwide protests, 627 were arrested, and there were at least 32 cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances. The most severe crisis for President William Ruto enters the third consecutive week of mobilization on the streets.

After initially mobilizing against original tax hikes with the hashtag #OccupyParliament, the leaderless movement is now calling for #OccupyEverywhere, calling for Ruto to resign. Ruto, meanwhile, is sinking deeper into the dilemma between denying he has blood on his hands and deepening the state’s debt, saying Kenya would have to borrow an additional $7.6 billion.

Israel’s attacks on the occupied West Bank intensified as fierce clashes broke out in and around the city of Jenin. An Israeli drone strike bombed a house as special forces infiltrated the city and clashed with local resistance fighters. At least five Palestinians have been killed in the attacks so far.

The Israeli military units stormed the city with multiple military vehicles encircling a house and calling on people inside to hand themselves over. The invading forces later bombed the house with shoulder-fired missiles, causing a fire. Deadly clashes with resitance fighters ensued outside the house.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces are said to have also surrounded the Jenin Governmental Hospital, where the bodies of those killed and critically wounded were received, said the medical facility’s director, Wissam Bakr.

The deadly Hurricane Beryl continues to cross the Caribbean islands as it approaches Mexico. It caused destruction across its path, with the fierce winds and heavy rain taking the lives of at least 10 people and leaving the islands in complete devastation.
The early arrival of the hurricane also marks an early start to the hurricane season due to ocean warming, being the earliest hurricane to reach category five intensity in the Atlantic Ocean. The impact of global warming causes increased ocean temperatures, leading to the formation of more powerful thunderstorms, which in turn become more destructive hurricanes. While the number of hurricanes may not be increasing, their destructive power is certainly on the rise, generating heavier rain and a higher storm surge.

The impacts of hurricanes on the small island nations rapidly intensify and become stronger, causing severe destruction and giving communities less time to recover between shocks.

Three million people are on the brink of death by starvation in Sudan amid the ongoing war, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned. Meanwhile, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to advance, seizing another key town, Singa, in the southeast of the country.

The buffer around the remaining areas under the control of Sudan’s forces is tightening as the RSF expands into large parts of the east and west of the country after more than a year of intense fighting.

The fiercely contested town of El-Fasher is still under the control of the Sudanese army as RSF offensives were repelled.

The IRC director said, “[...] the number of people under-reported that is being really silently dying is unbelievable because there's a failure in the health system.”

The number of children in Sudan facing severe food shortages has almost doubled in six months, with about 75% of children now going hungry daily. More than 12 million people have been forced to flee from the war.

An Israeli airstrike targeting the Nur Shams refugee camp in the occupied West Bank has killed four. The latest attack on the refugee camp in Tulkarem governorate brings the number of Palestinians killed in the area in just the past 24 hours to at least six, including a woman and a child. Since October 7, at least 560 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank.

Local political parties have since announced a strike in the Tulkarem governorate to mourn the Palestinians killed during Israel’s raid. Just days prior, the Israeli military invaded Nur Shams, one of many epicenters of Palestinian resistance in the West Bank, resulting in fierce clashes between local resistance fighters and the invading forces.

Without being able to confirm, Israel alleges the four who were killed were associated with the local Tulkarem Brigades and that they were preparing improvised explosive devices.

Kenya’s protesters repeatedly overpowered police forces today, defying massive tear gas shelling. Rallying under the slogan “Occupy Everything,” they demanded President William Ruto’s resignation as the initial anti-tax hike protests swelled into a full-scale anti-government uprising.

Amid the turmoil, large-scale destruction unfolded, with cars frequently set ablaze at an unprecedented rate compared to previous protests. Social media buzzed with speculation about potential state-hired agitators infiltrating the demonstrators.

Ruto is caught between the IMF, which continues to push for neoliberal reforms, and the furious protesters, who, despite more than 39 deaths, are not getting tired and have now entered their third week of protests.

Yet another massive wave of enforced displacement is sweeping Gaza in the wake of Israel’s latest mass evacuation order, forcing 250,000 Palestinians to flee Khan Younis just weeks after people were forced to return to the devastated city. With no safe place to go to left, “fear and extreme anxiety” have gripped the people of Gaza’s second-largest city as Israel’s relentless attacks continue despite the forced displacement order.

Previously, more than one million people have been pushed from Rafah into the nearby areas of al-Mawasi, Deir al-Balah, and Khan Younis. More than half of those were said to reside in the al-Mawasi “safe zone,” which has been repeatedly bombed. Now, with the latest displacement order for the eastern parts of Khan Younis, residents are being pushed into the central and western parts of the city, including the largely unsafe al-Mawasi.
