What is behind the rage in Kenya? red. media was in Nairobi during the current uprising and asked the protesters. The response was loud and unwavering: “Power to the people! Power! Power! Power!”

The rage boiled over after a popular uprising culminated in the deadly storming of the parliament building. In response, President William Ruto threatened to deploy the military against what he labeled as a “treasonous” mobilization led by Gen Z protesters.

Yesterday was the launch of the “7 Days of Rage” movement in response to a police killing at the same anti-austerity protests last week. With at least 22 protesters killed so far, the world is watching to see how Kenya will react next.

Meanwhile, the government plans to enforce the crippling IMF-backed tax bill on essential resources, further straining an already dire economic situation. According to a recent Infotrak report, 73% of Kenyans are either in severe financial distress or failing to make ends meet.

Ukraine football fans unfurled a banner of, Nazariy Hryntsevych, of the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion during the Ukraine vs Belgium Euro 2024 match in Stuttgart.

German media described the stunt as an “emotional moment” and omitted to mention Azov’s neo-Nazi character, or that until earlier this month the group was even barred from receiving US weapons and training because of this.

Hryntsevych was killed in May this year. The Ukraine fans used AI to make his image out of 182 other Ukrainian soldiers killed in the ongoing war with Russia.

Israel is stepping up its attacks against Gaza’s displaced, launching deadly strikes throughout the enclave. Within just 48 hours, Israeli strikes have targeted at least five displacement camps, killing dozens. The death toll of Israel’s war of extermination against the Palestinian people totals at least 37,718, while more than 10,000 are still missing under the rubble.

At the same time, the latest UN-partnered IPC report on hunger levels revealed that 96% of Gaza’s population, comprising some 2.15 million people, face acute food insecurity at the “crisis” level or higher. This includes almost half a million people who are enduring “catastrophic” conditions (IPC level five).

Coupled with the oppressive summer heat, people are enduring subhuman conditions. The Mercy Corps aid group observed people resorting to “desperate measures like boiling weeds, eating animal feed, and exchanging clothes for money to stave off hunger and keep their children alive.”

Today marks 74 years since the official beginning of the Korean War. Despite its devastating scope and crucial role in shaping today’s Korea, it remains largely forgotten in the West, overshadowed by WWII and the Vietnam War. Marked by immense destruction and countless massacres, the war cost the lives of up to five million people. Over 70 years later, rising tensions on the Korean peninsula beg the question: will there be another Korean War?

Protesters in Kenya have seized the parliament’s ceremonial Mace after hundreds stormed the parliament buildings as protests over the Finance Bill have shaken the country.

The Kenyan governmental website describes the ceremonial Mace as “a highly ornamented staff of metal, wood or other materials, carried by a Mace-bearer or placed before a sovereign or other high officials; in civic ceremonies or before a revered gathering to symbolize authority.”

According to Kenyan parliamentary tradition, the Mace is an essential part of parliamentary regalia, giving credence and legality to the assembly of national and local politicians. No formal business can be transacted in the absence of the Mace. As such, the protester’s seizure of the Mace represents another act of rebellion against the ruling order.

Hundreds of anti-tax protesters have stormed the Kenyan parliament, where lawmakers approved the controversial finance bill. The protesters stormed Parliament hours after police shot a number of protesters outside parliament buildings, overwhelming police and setting fire to a section of the parliament. So far, at least 10 protesters were shot dead as the compound was stormed.

Video footage from inside the parliament showed tables, chairs, and windows overturned and smashed up, while footage from outside showed fires, tear gas smoke, and dozens of armed police.

Meanwhile, MPs are said to have started escaping parliament through underground tunnels, as the protesters have taken over the compound.

The bill is yet to go through a third reading by lawmakers. The next step is for the legislation to be sent to President William Ruto for signing, who still has the possibility to send it back to parliament if he has any objections.

Happy birthday to socialist and former Chilean president, Salvador Allende! His presidency represented the attempt to establish a socialist society via parliamentary means in defiance of US influence.

The main focus of Allende’s policy during his presidency from 1970 to 1973 was the expropriation of essential pillars of the economy, such as mineral resources and large foreign companies and banks. By the end of 1971, the socialist government had taken control of more than 150 companies.

But Allende’s experiment in building socialism in Chile was crushed by a fascist coup led by Augusto Pinochet and backed by the US in 1973. Pinochet’s brutal rule lasted for nearly two decades, and over 40,000 people were tortured, killed, or disappeared.

A total shutdown is gripping Kenya. Protests against crippling tax hikes have intensified with police resuming their crackdown this morning. A nationwide strike is underway to pressure President William Ruto’s government to abandon the reforms.

Before noon, police forces were already firing tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets at protesters. Videos are circulating on social media showing the first severe injuries of the day. Last week, police killed a 29-year-old protester in Nairobi during anti-austerity protests.

Organizers have designated today a “Total Shutdown” to kickoff the “7 Days of Rage” movement, which will include occupying parliament in response to the murder of the protester.

The proposed tax comes amid an already dire economic situation in Kenya. According to a recent Infotrak report, 73% of Kenyans are either in severe financial distress or failing to make ends meet.
