On this day in 1975, 49 years ago, Mozambique’s Maxist-Leninist liberation movement, the Mozambique Liberation Front, better known as FRELIMO, defeated Portugal’s colonial rule over the country.
In 1970, the Portuguese army launched “Operation Gordian Knot” to put down the liberation war, using napalm and scorched earth tactics, wiping out entire villages, as in the case of the “Wiriyamu Massacre.”
One of the leaders of FRELIMO was revolutionary socialist and independence leader Samora Machel, who became the first President of Mozambique on June 25, 1975, declaring “the total and complete independence of Mozambique and its constitution into the People’s Republic of Mozambique.”
Machel quickly nationalized land, healthcare, education, and other essential sectors to redistribute and provide for the people. In 1981, the CIA plotted to assassinate Machel and others and was accused by the Mozambican government of preparing to back a coup.

Clashes broke out between Zionists and pro-Palestine protesters in front of a Los Angeles synagogue hosting a real estate event for stolen Palestinian land.
Police assisted the Zionists by pushing, shoving, and assaulting the protest. Videos online show several brawls breaking out on the streets, with the police failing to intervene. As pro-Palestine protesters attempted to leave the area, Zionist mobs have been seen chasing down and assaulting them.
Mainstream media outlets and politicians were quick to label the protest as “anti-Semitic.” At similar protests against real estate auctions of Palestinian land, protesters have maintained that they are opposed to the promotion of settler colonialism, not Judaism.

Brazil’s unions and social movements mobilized against a new “rape law” that’s being pushed by right-wing parties in Congress. The law would deem any abortion after 22 weeks as homicide. Protesters say that many of those who have an abortion after 22 weeks are usually underage girls.
The law is being rushed through Congress by the President of the Lower House of Congress, Arthur Lira. Lira is a member of the Progressive Party, the organizational successor to the former military dictatorship. President Lula rejected the bill and called it “madness.”

Kenya’s current protests are also against US imperialism, says Vice-Chairperson Communist Party of Kenya Booker Ngesa Omole.
Mass protests have been rocking the country this past week as Kenyans reject a new finance bill that would raise regressive taxes, particularly VAT. The bill would significantly increase the prices of everyday goods that working-class Kenyans buy.
Kenya’s government, led by President Willliam Ruot, is a close ally of the US government. He has demonstrated his subservience by preparing Kenya’s security forces to lead a US-funded intervention in Haiti while applying neoliberal austerity measures at home.

Today marks 76 years since the British vessel Empire Windrush arrived with men and women from the Caribbean, the so-called Windrush generation, to help rebuild Britain after World War II. Unsurprisingly, the migrants faced racism, discrimination, and oppression. Not only that, Britain has been deporting these very same people back to its former colonies at an alarming rate in recent years. But did you know that the Empire Windrush vessel also carries a dark past with it? Read on.

German police once again attacked a Palestine protest in Berlin. This time during a protest against one of Germany’s biggest companies, Siemens, which is profiting from Israel’s war and occupation. Police attacked and arrested protesters, including at least one minor and used dogs to intimidate protesters.
Since October 7, German police have steadily increased their oppression of people protesting for Palestine. This has included violence against minors and people with disabilities, sexual violence, and violence against journalists, lawyers, and paramedics.
Siemens lobbies on behalf of the European weapons and “border security” industry, directly benefiting from the border militarization it advocates and subsequently helps construct. It is also a major supplier of biometric software and other technologies used in border control systems across Europe.

“Nothing is left.” — Israel’s heavy bombardment across the Gaza Strip continues as more and more people flee southern Gaza to the central and northern parts of the enclave amid the Israeli military’s ongoing ground invasion of Rafah, the southernmost city.
As part of their latest atrocities, the Israeli military has conducted an attack in the vicinity of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, causing a great deal of damage to the area, including an evacuation center that was previously an UNRWA school. This morning, they struck a civilian shelter for displaced Palestinians in an area of Khan Younis designated as a “humanitarian zone.”
Meanwhile, in northern Gaza, Israeli forces have carried out a deadly strike on a home, killing eight people in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood.

How far is the German state and its police force willing to go in repressing pro-Palestine protesters?
Germany has been one of the biggest supporters of Israel both diplomatically and militarily. People in Germany who have taken to the streets to protest the ongoing genocide have been met with brutal attacks by the German police. The group Palestine Speaks compiled all the attacks in an open letter.

Who is to blame for the overturning of Roe vs. Wade? Two years ago today, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, a ruling that previously gave women the right to have an abortion. Democrats will have you thinking that they had nothing to do with this shameful attack on women.
In actuality, Democrats purposefully avoided codifying this right for their political gain. In 2007, then-Presidential candidate Barack Obama said his first legislative priority was guaranteeing the right to abortion (spoiler alert: he bailed on that promise too). Furthermore, when Joe Biden was elected as president in 2020, Democrats held the majority in the House and the Senate.
As calls to abandon Genocide Joe for his annihilation of Palestine mount, Democrats are shaming voters by masquerading as the only party that protects women’s rights.

Despite the media attention, the bigger phenomenon of “guns for hire” used by governments worldwide has largely remained under the radar. Let's take a closer look.

Israeli forces tied an injured Palestinian to the hood of a jeep, using him as a human shield as they raided the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. Mujahed Azmi, the young man tied to the vehicle, is currently receiving treatment for his wounds.
“They drove me back and forth for 20 minutes. I had hoped to be dead before the Israeli soldiers arrived. I had expected them to attend to my wounds, not beat and batter me while I already had two critical injuries,” Mujahed said in an interview.
While supporters of Israel’s war of extermination against the Palestinian people are quick to accuse the Palestinian resistance of using “human shields,” the latest incident in Jenin leaves one asking the question of which side is really using human shields.

Protests in Kenya have escalated after police forces used tear gas, strange-colored water cannons, and mounted police to disperse crowds. This week, powerful protests have dominated several parts of the country in response to President William Ruto’s planned suffocating tax reforms.
Ruto backtracked on his plans after the first wave of protests, stating that the reforms would not be implemented in their current form. Earlier proposals included double-digit tax increases on essential products such as bread.
However, protesters say that’s not enough and continue to mobilize on the streets, demanding that the tax reform discussion be completely abandoned in parliament.
Tuesday’s protest was largely peaceful, though police fired volleys of tear gas. At least 335 people were arrested. Amnesty Kenya expressed being “alarmed and outraged” by the “use of excessive force,” “intimidation of civilians,” and arbitrary arrests.
