The largest anti-government protests yet since the Milei-takeover shook the streets of Argentina's capital. Some sources report millions of protesters nationwide standing in defense of public education against ultra-libertarian President Javier Milei's damaging neoliberal shock therapy reforms.
Students and university professors were joined by the country's powerful trade unions and opposition political parties. Argentina's education system is considered one of the best in Latin America. The public universities are free of charge, with some 2.2 million people studying at the state-run institutions.
Far-right President Milei campaigned on a promise to cut public spending aggressively and continues to defend his hardline approach. He is pursuing a fanatically pro-western policy, with plans to dollarize the country and even seek NATO membership.
In his first 100 days in office, the country's infection and poverty rates soared. Nearly 60% of Argentinians live in poverty, a 20-year high.

Happy 70th birthday to the Black revolutionary, journalist, and former Black Panther Party member Mumia Abu-Jamal, described as “perhaps the world’s best-known death-row inmate.”
He received a death sentence in the US 42 years ago. After spending three decades on death row, a global solidarity movement successfully persuaded US authorities to commute his sentence to life imprisonment in 2011.
Mumia honed his skills as a revolutionary journalist while a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Panther Party. Renowned for viewing journalism as a potent political tool for developing a mass movement, he wrote extensively against capitalism, war, racism, and poverty.
His trial was marred by numerous controversies, including allegations of witnesses being blackmailed and the presentation of questionable evidence.
One report concluded that “the proceedings used to convict and sentence Abu-Jamal to death violated minimum international standards that govern fair trial procedures.”

“Black faces in high places are not gonna save us.” — Watch professor Ruha Benjamin denounce “Black faces” that continue to uphold the global elite’s status quo, from the US representative to the UN repeatedly voting against an end to Israel’s war of extermination to the proponents of Atlanta’s Cop City. As Benjamin puts it: “Our Blackness and womaness are not in themselves trustworthy.”

Training continues in Istanbul to prepare the Freedom Flotilla passengers for all possible scenarios. The passengers aim to break the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip and deliver much-needed aid.
red. Media’s Karam is one of those preparing the activists for their long journey and possible Israeli intervention.
Many previous ships have been raided by Israeli naval forces, specifically by the reconnaissance unit Shayetet 13, or S13. The S13 unit has a history of raiding flotilla missions, including the killing of 10 passengers on the Mavi Marmara ship in 2010.
This same unit led the recent attack on Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital, resulting in the deaths of over 400 people, including patients and children.

This weekend, a massive anti-tourism protest rocked the Canary Islands as Spanish locals grew tired of being priced out of their homes.
Around 50,000 protesters flooded the streets of Tenerife and stated that the issues caused by excessive tourism include gentrification, unaffordable housing for locals, and environmental damage.
The issue of housing is present across Spain, with substantial rent increases in cities like Barcelona, where an average apartment can cost more than many workers' monthly wages.
Despite tourism making up around 30-40% of the Canary Islands’ employment, locals feel that the soaring cost of housing and other factors are now outweighing the benefits.

Thousands of Turkish people and international activists marched in Istanbul in solidarity with Gaza and to demand the Turkish government allow the emergency Freedom Flotilla to depart for Gaza.
The protest was led by the passengers and steering committee of the Freedom Flotilla, who marched and raised the Palestinian and their country’s flags.
The ships, which were supposed to depart on April 21 carrying over 5,500 tons of aid, including food, medicine, and medical supplies, are still waiting for Turkish authorities’ approval.
Over 1,000 people will be boarding the ships in an attempt to break Israel’s illegal siege on Gaza and to deliver much-needed aid as Israel continues its starvation war on the enclave.
The passengers on board represent over 30 countries from across the globe, and many are doctors, politicians, and journalists.

The Myanmar junta is nearing its end in the Thai border states of Kayah and Kayin. Recent weeks have seen intense clashes between the anti-junta resistance forces and the military, with the former making significant gains along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Several Karenni groups in Kayah State have expanded the territory under their control following two subsequent major military offensives launched in June and November last year; they now control roughly 90% of Kayah State.
Meanwhile, Karen resistance forces and allied groups have taken over the border trade town of Myawaddy in Kayin State.
The fighting on the Thai-Myanmar border triggered a security crisis for Thailand as thousands of civilians fled into Thai territory. Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin posted on X that he was monitoring the situation closely.
Thailand shares a 2,400-kilometer border with Myanmar and, as a major trade partner, enjoys close relations with the junta leadership.

Climate change and neoliberal shock therapy have led to a dengue epidemic in Argentina. The debilitating illness carried by mosquitos is ravaging the country with a 3000% increase in cases since Javier Milei took power.
The "libertarian" response has left Argentinians without access to vaccines and medicines, and most now cannot even afford to buy mosquito repellent as inflation has destroyed workers' salaries.

Meet Nadia, one of the courageous participants on the Freedom Flotilla, set to sail from Istanbul to break the Israeli siege on Gaza. red. Media sat down with the Canadian-Egyptian journalist who shared her motivations for documenting the stories of the ship’s mission.
The Freedom Flotilla represents a growing international movement driven by activists to challenge Israel’s ongoing blockade that has isolated Gaza. Eyes worldwide are focused on Istanbul, the ship’s departure point.
At least three ships, one large cargo ship, and two passenger ships will sail in April. Hundreds of international human rights observers and 5,500 tons of humanitarian aid are on board.
The FFC is acting “in defiance of the International Court of Justice,” which on March 28 demanded that Israeli forces “no longer take any action to prevent the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid.”

Hundreds of bodies have been uncovered so far following the discovery of a mass grave inside the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The discovery comes just a couple of weeks after Israeli forces withdrew from the hospital on April 7.
Those retrieved from the mass grave include women, children, patients, and medical staff, with Ravina Shamdasani, a spokeswoman with the UN’s human rights office, saying that some of the bodies found at the Khan Younis hospital were “found with their hands tied and stripped of their clothes.”
A similar mass grave with over 300 bodies uncovered so far has been found at Al-Shifa Hospital, the enclave’s largest health facility, which endured a two-week Israeli siege before it ended on April 1.
The mass graves at Gaza’s two largest medical facilities are just two among several discovered since Israel launched its war of extermination on the besieged coastal enclave on October 7, killing more than 34,000 Palestinians so far.

“European values, same as it always was.” — Irish MEP Clare Daly slams the EU for its complicity in Israel’s war of extermination against the Gaza Strip. While European leaders shed crocodile tears about the killing of humanitarian aid workers, journalists, and civilians, they have increased weapons exports to Israel 10-fold, enabling the slaughter of over 34,000 Palestinians since October 7.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was greeted by crowds of protesters upon his arrival in Türkiye. The protesters called out Germany’s complicity in Israel’s ongoing total war of extermination against the Gaza Strip. Internationally, Germany has not only come under heavy criticism for its crackdown on Palestine solidarity activism but also for its role in supplying roughly 50% of Israel’s weapons supply, only second to the US.

The “Free Land Camp” will be in place until this Friday, occupying a space in the capital city.

New York police arrested around 100 students and staff members who were taking part in pro-Palestine protests on campus. NYPD violently stormed the university and tore down tents that had been part of an occupation.
Arrests also occurred at Yale University and Columbia University earlier in the week. On all occasions, police arrested students at the request of university authorities.
The collaboration between the university administration and the police is due to these protests, which are demanding an end to academic cooperation with Israel and its ongoing actions in Gaza.
Similar protests are also occurring at Duke University, Miami University in Ohio, MIT, The New School, UC Berkeley, University of Alberta, University of Michigan, UNC Charlotte, and Washington University.

The protest and occupation by students at Columbia University continues apace despite attacks by the media and national government, as Joe Biden claims that "blatant anti-semitism" is sweeping college campuses.
Columbia authorities are also cracking down on the mobilizations, with numerous students suspended and all classes now taking place online rather than on campus.
The main demand of the student protesters is that Columbia divest from Israel and cut any academic cooperation. It's organized by several groups, including Columbia University Apartheid Divest, Students for Justice in Palestine, and Jewish Voice for Peace.

“We are not in favor of escalating the armed conflict between the US and China... We are for Philippine sovereignty.”
Amid ratcheting tensions in the South China Sea, three weeks of war simulation training have begun between the US and Philippines, hosted on the island nation. The annual large-scale drills called “Balikatan” this time cross dangerous borders, into waters claimed by China.
The 2023 drills marked a significant expansion and deepening of the Philippine-US military alliance, doubling the number of participating troops and for the first time including islands neighbouring Taiwan. US Pacific commanders called this year’s drills the “most expansive yet.”
Last year, red. media interviewed Renato Reyes, Secretary General of the Philippines’ largest coalition of progressive organizations, Bayan, about the largest joint US-Philippines military drills in history. Reyes accuses the US of using the Philippines as a stepping stone for its imperialist agenda against China.

A report by the Communist Party of the Philippines's Political Bureau one year ago today revealed that their highest ranking members, Wilma and Benito Tiamzon, along with eight of their comrades, were massacred by the Philippines' military (AFP) with the support of US military advisors.
The report says the AFP's claim that the victims, dubbed the "Catbalogan 10," were killed in August last year when their boat "suddenly exploded" during a firefight with a US-trained and commanded unit of the AFP, was designed to conceal their capture, torture, and massacre of the group.
Witnesses reported to the CPP's investigation how the Tiamzons' captors subjected them to extreme torture and "smashed" their faces and hands with hard objects.
The AFP's 8th infantry division, Joint Task Force Storm, and the Joint Operations Task Force Trident conducted the operation. Trident counts US advisers in its ranks and joined the AFP's 2017 war on alleged ISIS militants that devastated the city of Marawi.
