Argentine police clashed with workers. The protest was against the closure of the National Cinema Institute (INCAA). Workers in the cultural sector held a press conference in front of the iconic Gaumont Cinema. Suddenly, police charged at them, wielding batons and pepper spray.

Most INCAA workers have already been fired. This action is part of the government's preparation to close the Institute. It aligns with President Javier Milei's neoliberal agenda, which aims to reduce the state's presence in all areas except repression.

Inflation has risen to 254%, significantly higher than the 160% rate he inherited. The past week saw numerous strikes, with teachers, airline workers, transport workers, and public sector unions participating. A possible general strike is looming.

Additionally, President Milei is struggling in Congress. His flagship austerity law faced another setback. It was blocked again yesterday in the Senate.

Watch Norman Finkelstein crush "Destiny" (Steven Bonnell), a gamer turned neoliberal Twitch streamer, for falsely claiming that the four Palestinian children that Israel assassinated on Gaza's beach in 2014 had come out of a "Hamas compound."

During the nearly five-hour debate on the Lex Friedman podcast, the claim was one of the many low points of Destiny and his debating partner, Zionist historian Benny Morris. Finkelstein was partnered with Middle East expert Mouin Rabbani. At one point, Finkelstein was compelled to point out that he and Rabbani had read "ten thousand books" on the topic of Palestine compared to Destiny: "you've read two Wikipedia entries."

The Afro-Brazilian politician Marielle Franco was assassinated on this day in 2018, just 18 months after being elected to the Rio de Janeiro City Council. She fought fearlessly against racist power structures throughout her life, regardless of constant threats.

As a Black woman and single mother, she was dedicated to defending those who lived in the Favelas, sharing her fate. She campaigned against racist police violence, exacerbated by the fascist President Jair Bolsonaro.

Her assassins, who killed her on March 14, 2018, were eventually revealed to be part of the state apparatus—two former police officers with ties to Bolsonaro. Franco will be remembered for challenging Brazil’s conservative political landscape, predominantly occupied by white men, and using her position to amplify the voices of Brazil’s most underrepresented communities.

Happy birthday, Albert Einstein! One of the most intelligent people in the world and, what is lesser known, a socialist! Did you know that Albert Einstein was a supporter of Soviet science?

Despite being a US citizen, even during the Cold War, Einstein admired the Soviet Union's contributions to science and advocated for cooperation between Soviet and Western scientists.

The anti-communism of the Cold War era fueled the Mayan Genocide in Guatemala. The Rio Negro massacres, the worst of which took place on this day in 1982, saw the mass murder of Indigenous villagers who refused to be displaced by a World Bank-funded hydroelectric project.
Despite some of the worst human rights abuses in the history of Central America, the institutions of the "democratic West" backed the military dictatorship there to the hilt and never faced justice for it.

Molotovs, stones, and tear gas grenades filled the air as protests erupted at several universities in Bogotá, demanding improved academic standards. Protests have been escalating for months across Bogotá’s universities.

At the National University, protesters demanded the democratization of the institution and opposed the university administration’s crackdown on a self-organized student kitchen. Meanwhile, at the University College of Cundinamarca, unrest was triggered by sharp price increases amid insufficient funds for teachers and collapsing university infrastructure.

Many protesters come from the militant core formed during Colombia’s 2021 National Strike uprising and the Primera Línea collectives, known for their confrontations with riot police during mass protests in Latin America.

Local authorities deployed Colombia’s ESMAD anti-riot unit against the protests. President Gustavo Petro had promised to dissolve ESMAD during his 2022 campaign, a pledge he has yet to fulfill.

The US government has turned on its puppet government in Haiti. After propping up the unelected regime of Ariel Henry, Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a meeting yesterday with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica - without the presence of Henry - where he decided that he must leave power and hold new elections.

Henry, currently in Puerto Rico, announced his resignation within a few hours. He will leave power once a transitional council is established. The US decision comes after weeks of protests and violence in the country.

As stated by spokesperson Matthew Miller, the US is still determined to push its foreign intervention in the country and will likely establish a government that is as amenable to its interests as Henry was but with greater legitimacy and control over the violent riots in the streets.

It remains to be seen whether this will calm social anger.

The protests, primarily led by students from the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico, have turned violent in some instances, with reports of police officers being attacked with slingshots and government vehicles being set on fire. Today marks four years since police murdered Black woman Breonna Taylor in cold blood. However, with no police officers ever having been charged with shooting and killing Taylor, her killers continue to walk freely.

In the middle of the night, plainclothes police officers stormed the 26-year-old Black medical worker’s apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. Police indiscriminately fired dozens of shots, five of which fatally hit Taylor.

The incident was riddled with controversies. The police officers made false claims to obtain the warrant, and during the raid, the police did not follow protocol. The subsequent police account included multiple errors.

The murder of Taylor sparked months of protests demanding the arrest of her killers and them being charged with murder. Yet, no officer has ever been charged with shooting Taylor, and only charging four police officers with federal civil rights violations. The only officer who faced federal charges in the raid was found “not guilty.”

India has just announced the implementation of its controversial anti-Muslim citizenship law, triggering widespread protests across the country. Authorities have already made several arrests, cracking down on protesters. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was passed in 2019 but has not been enforced until now.

The CAA enables Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Christians who escaped to India from neighboring countries to become eligible for citizenship in a matter of only five years, even without valid visas or other required paperwork.

However, Muslims and other communities from neighboring countries still need to wait 11 years before they become eligible, in addition to needing valid documentation.

The implementation of the CAA comes just weeks ahead of national elections, possibly posing a threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s far-right, Hindu-nationalist government, which has ruled the country since 2014, marked by an extreme rise in anti-Muslim violence.

Tension rising in occupied Jerusalem as the month of Ramadan began. While thousands of Palestinian Muslims are trying to enter the Al-Aqsa mosque for prayers, Israeli forces continue to search and harass the worshippers during the holiest month for Muslims. Israeli occupation forces have increased their security measures and deployed massive forces across the occupied cities that are already under massive surveillance and restrictions.

Ramadan has been for many years a spark for escalation, especially around Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam. Riots erupted in the town of Byadagi in the southern Indian state of Karnataka over a sudden drop in prices. Hundreds of angered farmers protested at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee yard, storming and setting fire to the office and several vehicles.

The protests erupted after authorities announced the new chili prices in the agricultural business center. The sharp price decline was reportedly due to the significant influx of chilies at the Byadagi APMC market. APMC officials claimed that the chili that had previously been coming to Byadagi for the last two weeks “is of low quality.”

The farmers’ frustration can be attributed to a series of anti-farmer policies the government continued to push through amid another massive wave of farmers’ protests in the South Asian country. Additionally, the government has failed to provide sufficient drought relief as the state of Karnataka declared drought in 223 out of 240 taluks, with 196 classified as severely affected.

Women were arrested by police forces in Durban during protests against South Africa's load-shedding crisis and the collapse of essential infrastructure services. The protests were supported by the self-described Marxist-Leninist party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which has long been at the forefront of protests against the crippling infrastructure crisis.

Protesters set fire to car tires and garbage that had been piling up on the streets for weeks due to the lack of infrastructure as workers from the South African Municipal Workers Union are on strike for better wages. The EFF announced further protests in Durban.

South Africa is suffering under near-daily government-rolled-out electricity blackouts, known as load shedding, to cope with South Africa's worst-ever energy crisis. The EFF says the ruling ANC government would rather submit to Western forces than find solutions to the country's crises.

15,000 Haitians have been displaced in just the last week due to rising violence as the US-backed Ariel Henry regime loses control of the country. Prime Minister Henry remains holed up in Puerto Rico under FBI protection as it's clear he's unlikely to survive if he returns to Haiti.

Much of the country is paralyzed as gangs have attacked police stations and prisons and blocked off the national airport. This has also caused severe food shortages, with around half of the country unable to access enough food and about 1.4 million facing starvation. Fuel has also become difficult to access with gas stations closed and speculators selling it for double the price.

Gangs have taken advantage of popular anger at the US-backed Henry regime to make their own attempt at power. Paramilitary leader Guy Phillipe, one of the ring leaders of the 2004 coup against progressive President Aristide, joined the wave of violence over the weekend and announced his plan to take the presidency.
