Was NATO founded to protect freedom? If so, why did it include Nazi war criminals among its ranks? Rather than denazifying West Germany, the U.S. utilized Hitler's senior bureaucrats and fascists to establish the institutions of today's 'democratic West.

We take a look at recipients of the Iron Cross who later assumed senior positions in NATO.

Elections are being held in Portugal today amidst the unprecedented rise of the far-right "Chega" party. Currently the country's third-largest parliamentary party, the ascent of this openly racist party represents a massive shift in Portugal's political landscape.

Having secured only 1.3% of votes in the 2019 election, the party is now making headlines as recent polls suggest the party will secure 17% of the vote this year.

The party's leader, Andre Ventura, has a notorious history of xenophobic, misogynistic and homophobic comments, as well as performing the fascist salute. In 2020, Ventura told a Black Member of Parliament to "go back to her country of origin."

Anticipating the elections will result in parliamentary deadlock, Ventura has expressed a desire for a role in the government. red. took to the streets to ask People of Color how they feel about their future in Portugal amidst Chega's rise.

Israeli occupation forces arrested female Palestinian journalist Bushra al-Tawil in Ramallah, a city in the occupied West Bank, during an overnight raid. She was arrested along with three other women from different cities. The Israeli soldiers conducted a field interrogation and vandalized the house before leaving. In recent weeks, Israel has arrested more women; some have been released in the last prisoner swap during the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Israel is holding at least 60 Palestinian women in Israeli prisons, including two journalists and two minors. The Palestinian female prisoners are facing harsh realities with the brutal Israeli restrictions and punishments instated after October 7. Recent reports indicate Gazan female prisoners being sexually assaulted and raped by Israeli soldiers and officers.

Today we remember the first Palestinian women's militant organization, "Chrysanthemum Flower." Before the 1948 Nakba, this secret feminist organization in Jaffa resisted the Zionist militia with armed attacks.

Founded by Palestinian sisters Mohiba and Nariman Khurshid, the organization evolved from community aid to armed resistance after Mohiba witnessed a child's death by a British sniper. They fought and carried out deadly strikes to defend their people. After defending Jaffa, they faced displacement. Moheeba Khorsheed, one of the founders, became a refugee, settling in Egypt after fleeing through Lebanon and Jordan.

Henry is set to return to the country but is now holed up in Puerto Rico under FBI supervision, unable to return due to the extreme violence that caused his government to declare a state of emergency and curfew earlier this week.

The US has been pushing for yet another foreign intervention in Haiti to shore up its puppet government led by Henry. The US Embassy has told its citizens in the country to leave immediately.

With burning barricades in front of the parliament building in Jakarta, protesters have been calling for the impeachment of outgoing President Joko Widodo, accusing him of widespread electoral fraud in the recent presidential election, which resulted in the likely victory of far-right, anti-communist Prabowo Subianto.

Led by students, the protesters criticize an 'undermining of democracy' sparked by journalistic investigations that exposed bias for front-runner Subianto by the police, regional authorities, and others. The presidential office has denied political meddling.

Subianto was a former military general who played a leading role in the genocidal invasion of East Timor. He was also the son-in-law of the dictator Suharto, who carried out the anti-communist genocide of 1965.

Currently still the Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto has already declared himself the winner. Polls show his supporters are mainly young voters who did not witness the genocide.

Fierce and violent protests broke out in central Athens, Greece, after the parliament approved a highly unpopular university privatization reform. This decision ignored months of widespread protests nationwide, which had been escalating in tension.

Over 30,000 students and activists protested during the vote, calling for public and free education. Under the leadership of right-wing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece allocates only 3%-4% of its GDP to education, below the EU average.

Intense clashes occurred between the students, who carried red flags, and the police, who responded with tear gas and batons, resulting in serious injuries. Videos also captured the use of Molotov cocktails and explosives against police forces. Several people were arrested.

Protesters criticized the new education law as an "assault" on public education. PM Mitsotakis claimed the reform was intended to combat "brain drain," referring to the emigration of highly skilled individuals.

On this day in 1954, Irish socialist and freedom fighter, Bobby Sands, was born.

Sands sacrificed his life in the struggle for Irish independence from Britain. While in jail, he led a 66-day-long hunger strike that resulted in his death.

At the age of 18, Sands joined the Provisional Irish Republican Army. He admired left-wing and radical writers, from Irish socialists like James Connolly to champions of African liberation like Frantz Fanon.

He was arrested multiple times and eventually sentenced to 14 years in prison for firearms possession. He was incarcerated in the notorious Maze Prison, dubbed "H-Block," infamous for its brutal treatment of prisoners and routine torture.

Sands led the prisoners' struggle to be recognized as what they were: political prisoners, not criminals. They wanted their struggle for Irish freedom to be recognized and their status as prisoners of war acknowledged. This culminated in the hunger strike that Sands and nine other prisoners became known around the world for. Forty-one days into the strike, Sands was elected with more than 30,000 votes as a Member of Parliament for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, increasing international attention to his and his comrades' cause.

Despite international pressure and pleas from various political figures, including the Pope, Sands died on May 5, 1981, after 66 days on a hunger strike, aged just 27 years old. His death sparked a wave of protests and riots across Northern Ireland, and to this day, he is remembered as a hero by Irish freedom fighters. His famous saying, "Our revenge will be the laughter of our children," continues to inspire the oppressed around the world.

Poland saw its most heated farmers’ protest yet as violent clashes with police erupted outside the country’s parliament in the capital, Warsaw.

About 30,000 farmers threatened to bring Poland to a standstill as they demanded a halt to cheap imports and environmental regulations that they said would harm their livelihoods. As the farmers marched towards parliament, police responded with batons, pepper spray, tear gas, and stun grenades, with protesters hurling rocks and firecrackers at them.

After leaving Warsaw empty-handed, as their request to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was turned down, Poland’s farmers’ unions warned of further measures such as the “blockade of the entire country.”

"All the Arab countries kneel to Israel, but we did not kneel to them,” expressed a Palestinian woman, reflecting her anger at the complicity and lack of action from Arab nations in supporting Gaza. “We entered to defend Jerusalem and end the suffering that is happening to us,” she added.

Israel has intentionally starved the Palestinian people in Gaza since October 8, preventing food, water, and medical supplies from entering the enclave. At least 18 children have died from starvation in the last days, while many others are in critical condition, being treated at barely functioning hospitals.

Watch feminist philosopher Judith Butler insist October 7th be understood as an "uprising...against a violent state apparatus". Butler added: "you can be for or against armed resistance, you can be for or against Hamas but let us at least call it armed resistance and then we can have a debate about whether we think it's right."

Butler, who is most known for pioneering the theory of gender performativity, has also in the past called for the left to engage with Hamas and Hezbollah despite her own staunch advocacy of non-violent struggle. During Israel's unsuccessful 2006 war on Lebanon, she argued that both resistance groups should be understood as "part of a global left", emphasizing that this does not mean the left cannot be "critical" of those movements or "from raising the question of whether there are other options besides violence."

Italian soccer fans from SS Lazio Roma made the Hitler salute and sang fascist songs at the infamous Munich Beer Hall, where Hitler first launched the Nazi party in 1920.

Those chanting happened ahead of their UEFA Champions League match against Bayern Munich. German police have confirmed the arrest of one fan for performing a Nazi salute.

Lazio fans were left disappointed later that day after being knocked out of the competition in a humiliating manner, but their fascist chanting is what made headlines. The club has a long connection to Mussolini, who personally supported the club and built its current stadium with state funds during his dictatorship.

Even among the players, this tradition has been kept alive, with figures such as club legend Paolo Di Canio, who performed a fascist salute on the pitch in 2005 and afterward stated, “I’m a fascist, not a racist.” In 2021, Lazio then gave a playing contract to Romano Mussolini, great-grandson of the dictator and son of Alessandra Mussolini, the far-right MEP who worked to keep her grandfather's legacy alive.

The fan base is also steeped in fascism. Their arch-rivals are AS Roma, a club whose traditional ultras are associated with the left; Lazio's infamous banner unfurled when playing them reads, “Auschwitz is your town, the ovens are your houses.”
