“We will never forget the moments of terror and fear we lived in this war.” –Listen to the heartbreaking words of a child in Gaza, sending his message to the world. “We, as children, only ask for our right to our childhood.”

Children in Gaza have lived their entire lives under blockade and war. To be a child in Gaza is living on borrowed time. UNICEF has described the Gaza Strip as the most dangerous place in the world to be a child.

Almost half of Gaza’s population is under 18 years old. Israel’s “war on children” has killed over 13,022 since October 7. Over one million children in the Gaza Strip now require mental health treatment. The war left at least 17,000 children in Gaza unaccompanied.

Thirty-two years ago today, Hugo Chávez, then a military officer, launched an unsuccessful armed insurrection in Venezuela in an attempt to overthrow neoliberal President Carlos Andrés Pérez.

That day, he led five units into downtown Caracas in an attempt to seize the presidential palace. However, Pérez had advanced knowledge of the insurrection and could avoid capture.

Although rebels captured some cities across the country, Chávez could not take the capital, Caracas, and was arrested and imprisoned.

Once captured, Chávez was forced to make an announcement on live television admitting defeat and calling on his men to stand down. Chávez took advantage of the fact he was alive to say that the struggle was over “for now,” implying that it could be taken up again at a future date.

Four years later, in 1998, he was elected President of Venezuela for the first time. He embarked on a program to see natural resource nationalization and a new democratic constitution.

Sixty years since the New York School Boycott! On this day in 1964, almost half of New York City’s school kids went on strike against racial segregation that persisted despite the Brown vs. Board ruling a decade before. An incredible show of unity between students, teachers, and parents brought the school system grinding to a halt and won significant concessions from the city, concessions that were fiercely resisted by a section of white parents that began their racist counter-movement.

Dutch Police attacked Palestine solidarity activists in The Hague, Netherlands, as about 100 protested at the central station against Israel’s ongoing war of extermination against Gaza. Footage shows Police violently dispersing protesters shouting ceasefire slogans.

The Netherlands is an essential backer of Israel’s war against Gaza, supplying Israel with parts for the F-35 fighter jets used to bomb Gaza from the air. In 2022, Israel imported €2.3 million worth of military goods from the Netherlands under the F-35 program.

In the wake of the UNWRA cuts by Western countries, the Netherlands’ far-right President Geert Wilders wrote on social media, “No more money to the UNRWA. Never again.” The Netherlands also passed a motion condemning the slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free” as “inciting violence.”

Argentinian police have stepped up their repression of anti-government protests as clashes erupted in the capital, Buenos Aires. The armed riot police made heavy use of mace, water cannons, and what seems to be bean bag rounds fired from shotguns as protesters continued to rally en masse against “anarcho-capitalist” President Milei’s neoliberal policies.

Bean bag rounds, small bags filled with lead pellets, were developed in the 1970s as a “non-lethal” means of subduing individuals. Since then, they have been commonly used by law enforcement worldwide. However, there have been numerous fatalities caused by bean bag rounds, such as during Colombia’s national strike back in 2019, as well as in the US, Canada, and Australia.

Mass mobilizations against Milei, his flagship reform package, dubbed the “omnibus bill,” and his plans to introduce crippling austerity measures and extensive privatization of state institutions have been ongoing across the country since late December.

School students blocked Paris’s Lycée Voltaire school with burning barricades and took to the streets “to defend public schools from government attacks,” warning that “the state school system is on the brink of collapse.” Parisian police, some undercover, attacked the young students with batons, arresting three people.

The students demand a public, secular, free, and compulsory school system, also opposing a proposed hard-line immigration law, which will also impact foreign students. President Emmanuel Macron advanced the reform together with far-right opposition parties. The bill has been called “the most regressive of the past 40 years.”

After heavy police repression, protesters met again in a general assembly today, resulting in calls for a general school strike. Protests were organized concurrently by schools in nine other cities across France. Meanwhile, militant student protests erupted in Greece, on the opposite side of Europe, in defense of the public education sector.

Tireless protests against Argentina’s “anarcho-capitalist” President Javier Milei show no signs of dying down. Thousands protested outside the Parliament in Buenos Aires, chanting slogans at Milei to “F*ck off” after he sent the Gendarmerie against the protesters, resulting in clashes.

The focal point of the protests was Milei’s flagship reform package, dubbed the “omnibus bill.” Milei is planning to launch crippling austerity measures and extensive privatization of state institutions. However, given the minority position of his coalition in Congress and the growing pressure from the mass mobilization on the streets, he faces challenges in passing the law.

The self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalist made headlines during his 2023 presidential campaign by frequently brandishing a chainsaw, pledging to slash the size of the state to unleash more unregulated capitalism.

Since Milei took power, Argentina’s inflation has rocketed to well over 200%, with figures still hovering around 160% as of November 2023. Over 40% of all Argentinians live below the poverty line, and many fear that Milei's reforms will escalate the situation.

Watch Burkina Faso's interim president say that France had "no desire at all" to fight terrorists during their years long "counter-terrorism" operation in his country that involved thousands of troops.

In an interview discussing Ouagadougou's recent decision to quit the West African bloc ECOWAS, Ibrahim Traoré said it was "more than realistic" that Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali go it alone in their fight against terrorism. "They had drones, helicopters, all types of equipment, but we never saw the terrorists...we find them every day and we beat them. So there is a problem", he said.

Before the French led NATO invasion of Libya in 2011, there were virtually no "violent events" recorded in the Sahel region of Africa, but after the NATO war concluded, violence across the region soared. In 2020, ACLED documented 2,130 violent events linked to terrorism.

In a dark twist to Egypt's football history, today marks the 12th anniversary of the Port Said Stadium massacre, an event some believe was a punitive act against fans for their role in the protests against Hosni Mubarak.

On this tragic day, 74 supporters were mercilessly killed following a match against the Al Masry team. The chaos erupted as Al Masry fans, wielding stones, knives, and fireworks, launched a vicious attack on the Al Ahly supporters. Compounding the horror, the police refused to open the stadium gates, trapping the victims inside, leading to speculation that this act of violence was more than a spontaneous riot, possibly a calculated retribution orchestrated or condoned by military forces.

The Ultras phenomenon in Egypt began in 2007 with the formation of the first fan association for the Al Ahly club. The Ultras were known for their confrontations with Egyptian police, who often treated them violently, subjecting them to humiliating searches and harassment during stadium entries. Eventually, in May 2015, the Egyptian Court ordered the dismantling of the Ultras, a nationwide network of devoted soccer fans, banning all their activities both inside and outside football stadiums.

Although Ultras Ahlawy no longer exists as an organized domestic force, their presence endures in the matches that Al Ahly plays outside of Egypt. Notably, the FIFA Club World Cup tournament has provided a platform for them to convey their message to a broader audience and continue the spirit of this hardcore fan group.

Filipino freedom fighters defeated Spanish colonialism at the end of the 17th century, but the US government crushed their hopes of independence shortly after, on this day in 1899.

This is the story of how the US 'purchased' a nation and violently massacred anyone opposed to the deal. Their colonial legacy lives on today with US military bases still dotted across Filipino land.

On this day in 1899, the US started the “Philippine-American War”, massacring up to 1.4 million Filipinos.

In 1896, 30,000 Filipino guerillas organized by the Katipunan revolutionary society were just about to get rid of Spanish colonizers, after 300 years of colonial rule, when the US army arrived, to "help" the Philippines to obtain their independence. On February 4, the US declared war against the Filipinos.

US troops piled up the thousands of Filipino bodies lining the streets and made fortifications of them, while the Katipunan switched focus to their new enemy, launching a heroic campaign of guerilla warfare with the support of the Filipino masses. The US deployed 70,000 troops with instructions to use “overwhelming force”.

They slaughtered entire villages, tortured civilians and built concentration camps where thousands perished. The end of the war in 1902 began 44 years of US colonization. Despite its independence in 1946, today it remains a semi-colony.

Chaos erupted in the state of Manipur in India’s northeast as armed militias effectively took over. Groups of women of the Kuki-Zo community have been driving out central state forces from their villages while Kuki-Zo students protested as state authorities surrendered to the Arambai Tenggol, an armed Meitei militia alleged to be at the forefront of the violence against the Kuki-Zo minority.

Armed members of the Arambai Tenggol flooded Imphal’s streets, summoning all Meitei legislators and putting forth their demands. All lawmakers are said to have signed the charter of demands aimed at disenfranchising the Kuki-Zo.

Ethnic violence in the state, fractured along ethnic lines and largely neglected by New Delhi, has so far cost the lives of nearly 200 people, with tens of thousands of people having been forced to flee their homes. Human Rights Watch has previously accused BJP state authorities of facilitating the conflict with “divisive policies that promote Hindu majoritarianism.”

“They dragged us as if we weren’t human.” – red. Media reporters met with two survivors of Israeli captivity who recounted the violence, abuse and torture they suffered at the hands of Israeli soldiers.

Israeli forces are posting their war crimes online, often sharing footage of mass arrests where Palestinians are seen blindfolded, handcuffed, and stripped naked by masked Israeli guards. Other reports from human rights organizations speak of executions of prisoners and of people dying of cold.

The faith of many Gazans in Israeli detention centers and prisons remains unknown. Recently, the Israeli supreme court upheld an order from right-wing Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, prohibiting Israeli forces and prisons from disclosing any information about Palestinian detainees from Gaza to international organizations and the ICRC.

For Black History Month, we remember Black liberation icon Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered his powerful speech "The Other America" at the University of Oxford in 1967. King's words ring true today: "Our nation's summer of riots are caused by our nation's winters of delay."

King's insightful analysis revealed that the civil rights movement was being deliberately stonewalled by the white ruling class whose racism and exploitation provoked the frustrations of the Black community in particular, to boil over into violent outbursts in several US cities.

King understood that the root cause of these riots was the failure of the U.S. establishment to address the demands of the the Black community and poor people in general, famously dubbing the riots "the language of the unheard".

Massive clashes erupted between students and police forces in Athens, Greece, during protests against government plans to privatize universities. Video footage captured students striking riot police helmets with red flags while tear gas was deployed and batons were used to disperse protesters. Several arrests were made.

For the past week, students have been protesting against right-wing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is pushing through several pieces of legislation to legalize privatized universities for the first time. The students fear this move would jeopardize the public education sector, which is already struggling with funding problems.

Protesters were seen holding banners reading: "No to the privatization of public education!". These privatization proposals coincide with a time when Greece is grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, leading to a significant portion of the population having to reduce spending on essential goods, as indicated by recent polls.

Indigenous communities in Peru have just stopped the privatization of the sacred Machu Picchu site.

After a week of protests and roadblocks, the US-backed coup regime of Dina Boluarte was forced to scrap plans to hand ticket sales over to a private banking corporation.

For years, the local community has controlled ticket sales and they were set to lose over $3 million in annual revenue as capitalists profit from the local area's ancestral sites.

Peru has long used Indigenous colors and traditions for tourism marketing while also discriminating against and repressing those same communities whenever they demand their rights. If Machu Picchu had been privatized, locals would have lost the only remaining way to benefit from the influx of tourists.
