The genocide against the socialist party Unión Patriótica (UP) at the hands of the Colombian state, which claimed over 6,000 lives, is now officially recognized by the government. Colombia’s first left-wing government under President Gustavo Petro opens the door for accountability.
The UP was a beacon of hope for the radical workers’ movement of the late 1980s in Colombia, which emerged from negotiations between the FARC-EP guerrilla, its clandestine communist party, and the state. However, the UP’s quick electoral successes ended in horrific massacres that nearly wiped out the entire party. Join us as we delve into the UP’s history to learn more about the case.

Clashes erupted in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo as around 10,000 protesters took to the streets to protest IMF-induced austerity measures amid the country’s ongoing worst-ever economic crisis. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the anti-government protesters after at least two courts prohibited them from marching along roads leading to vital buildings, including the president’s office, finance ministry, and the central bank.
The protests, spearheaded by the main opposition United People’s Power party, targeted President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s administration for steeply raising taxes and electricity and fuel costs. These hikes significantly increased the cost of living, leaving many unable to pay bills. With upcoming elections in the island nation later this year, the opposition said it planned more protests across the country in the coming weeks.
Large-scale protests have shaken the South Asian country since it plunged into its worst economic crisis in 2022, followed by a declaration of bankruptcy with over $83 billion in debt, leading to the ousting of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Last year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stepped in, approving a $2.9 billion bailout package linked to significant privatization reforms and severe austerity measures.

“Don’t get fooled by the IDF” - Listen to the alarming message from our colleague Hassan R. Esdodi, reporting from Rafah in the south of Gaza amid Israel’s forced displacement of over a million Palestinians.
Using military flyers, Israel has instructed the already displaced population to evacuate once more, a life-threatening endeavor due to bombardment, Israeli checkpoints, hunger, and cold winter conditions.
In Rafah, Palestinians face a catastrophic crisis, lacking even the most basic necessities. According to UN figures, at least 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced since the war began, with most now stranded in Rafah.
The systematic forced displacement of almost the entire Gaza population towards the Egyptian border has raised concerns that Israel plans to expel millions from the region. At the same time, Israeli ministers openly celebrate plans to colonize the area permanently.
French farmers continue their "siege" of Paris, blocking major highways and dumping waste at government offices as the protest edged closer to the capital. They argue that government measures to quell the protests did not go far enough to meet their demands for better pay and living conditions.
The farmers say that these protests result from long-standing issues they face, including concerns over insufficient remuneration, lack of government aid, free trade agreements, pesticide use, and what they deem unfair competition with farmers from countries with less strict food quality norms. Among several other farmers' unions, the National Federation of Farmers' Unions (FNSEA) and Young Farmers (JA) are taking a leading role in these protests.
Recent data from The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) revealed that in 2021, 18% of French farming families lived below the poverty line. Additionally, data from La Mutualité Sociale Agricole (MSA) in 2015 indicated that nearly one-third of farmers earn less than €354 a month.

One of Europe’s last remaining guerrilla organizations with origins in the tumultuous 1960s is flaring up again, Corsica’s National Liberation Front of Corsica (FLNC). The island has waged a long struggle for independence from France, with one of the most radical factions now responding to recent words from President Emmanuel Macron, who has ruled out independence for Corsica.
In a long-unseen press statement, heavily armed and masked militants read out a statement reiterating their political goal, a sovereign Corsican nation-state, and emphasizing that Macron’s new planned autonomy reforms are unacceptable. At the same time, they took responsibility for 45 non-lethal bomb attacks that rocked the island in late 2023.
The island has been experiencing a political upheaval since the 2022 militant mass protests sparked by the murder of independence leader and ex-FLNC member Yvan Colonna in prison, with FLNC groups announcing the return of armed struggle. Read on.

Kenya’s women make history: The country’s largest-ever protest against femicide and violence against women erupted in Nairobi, the capital. Thousands flooded the streets in response to a surge in femicides, which have claimed the lives of at least a dozen women this month alone.
Between 2016 and 2023, Kenya recorded at least 500 reported femicide cases, with the actual number of unreported instances believed to be significantly higher. One in three women in Kenya has experienced sexual violence before turning 18, according to the Gender Violence Recovery Center.
“A country is judged not by how well it treats its rich people, but by how well it takes care of the weak and vulnerable,” said Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri, who joined the protest. On Kenya’s social media, videos are going viral of men reacting to the protests, some with death threats.
A key demand of the protests was prosecuting perpetrators, most of whom remain unpunished. “Perpetrators are going free, so we see even our government is neglecting us,” noted one protest organizer.

Global protests for Palestine dominated the streets over the weekend, tying International Holocaust Remembrance Day to the genocide in Gaza and emphasizing its central message of 'never again.' Police forces attacked protesters in several countries, leading to severe injuries.
On the streets of Milan, Italy, hundreds of activists defied a ban on the protests, resulting in police attacking the protesters with batons. Protests in Germany and the US also erupted in violence as police began to clash with the thousands of protesters.
Meanwhile, Israeli government officials weaponized Holocaust Remembrance Day as a cynical pretext for their war in Gaza, linking it to the Palestinian guerrilla October 7 offensive. The war on Gaza is 'the most clear-cut case of genocide,' according to a top UN official who recently resigned from his post in protest.

Martí was known as “the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution,” and fought for Cuban independence from Spanish colonialism. His legacy has inspired revolutionaries across Latin America.
Through his writings and political action he advocated for a united and independent Cuba and as a result was deported from his homeland by the Spanish imperialists. In exile Martí traveled in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, raising awareness of the Cuban struggle for freedom from colonialism.
Martí was also a renowned Latin American intellectual and he foresaw the threat that U.S. imperialism represented for the continent’s independence.
Martí was also the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and he played a key role in uniting the Cuban people and sparking the independence war against Spain. He was killed on the battlefield during the Battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895, against the hated Spanish imperialists.

Greece's student movement is rallying against the privatization of higher education, a policy advocated by the conservative Mitsotakis government, which aims to legalize private universities in the country, which would exclude parts of the society from accessing education.
Protesters express concern that the introduction of private universities, coupled with funding cuts for public universities, could lead to the wholesale privatization of the entire sector. Funding for public universities has been slashed by more than half since the onset of the austerity regime following the Eurozone crisis over a decade ago.
Marching through the city center under the slogan "education is not for sale," a significant number of participants also displayed banners in support of Palestine.
Greece currently has 24 public universities, but many face the prospect of closure due to funding cuts, making it challenging for them to compete with private institutions supported by significant corporate interests.

Another mass grave in Gaza has been used to bury over 100 bodies stolen by Israeli soldiers. Some of the bodies were killed in the war, while others were dug up by the Israeli army. Human rights groups warn of organ theft from killed Palestinians by the Israeli army.
“I don't know anything about my family. I came to identify them [...] but even their faces are completely decomposed,” said one Palestinian, reflecting the anguish felt by families gathered around the new mass grave in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, hoping to locate or recognize their loved ones.
Organ theft investigations cite reports from medical staff in Gaza examining bodies after their handover from Israeli soldiers. Medical professionals found evidence of organ theft, including missing cochleas and corneas, as well as other vital organs like livers, kidneys, and hearts.
Over 2000 graves in Gaza have been dug up or destroyed by Israeli soldiers. Israel claims it is pursuing information to inspect possible locations of dead Israeli hostages. About 250 hostages were taken during the October 7 offensive by Gaza's militant groups.
Over 120 mass graves have been dug in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli invasion. Many more bodies have been buried on the side of the road or in the courtyards of besieged hospitals.

While the entire population of the Gaza Strip is on the brink of starvation and famine, several countries decided to freeze their funds to UNRWA, which over two million Palestinians in and outside of Gaza depend on for survival. The decision by the 14 Western countries and close allies of Israel only exacerbates the already dire situation caused by Israel’s war of extermination against the enclave.
Just recently, the Gaza Strip’s entire population of about 2.2 million people was classified as being in Phase 3 or above of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), meaning that humanitarian food assistance is urgently needed due to severe acute malnutrition and hunger-related mortality. The classification marks the highest share of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity that the IPC initiative has ever classified for any given area or country. However, despite the urgent need for humanitarian food assistance, supplies to Gaza are already heavily limited due to Israel controlling what enters the enclave and, now, the frozen UNRWA funds.
In addition to the dependence on the UNRWA for food, there are 1.7 million internally displaced Palestinians in Gaza, of which nearly one million reside in UNRWA shelters.

red. media spoke with Samir Zaqut, Deputy CEO of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, who described the UNRWA cuts as an “order to kill all the people” in Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is responsible for millions of Palestinian refugees, providing essential services almost single-handedly. These cuts could worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict.
Over 20 major NGOs, including Oxfam and Johanniter International, have issued a joint appeal to the countries threatening to drain Gaza of its last remaining resources, warning of “the worst humanitarian catastrophe of our time.”
Israel’s attacks against UNRWA date back to the agency’s inception. The latest allegations are based solely on Israeli intelligence reports, which Western countries have quickly accepted. In contrast, numerous alleged Israeli war crimes have led to no consequences from the West.

We asked people in Gaza about the impact of the more than 50% reduction in UNRWA’s budget following Western countries’ abrupt suspension of UNRWA funding due to unconfirmed links to the October 7 offensive.
UNRWA’s main donors, the US, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, the UK, Italy, Australia, and Finland, which provide more than 50% of UNRWA’s total budget, have halted their funding. UNRWA is the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, providing basic needs to over 5.9 million people.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, denounced the fund suspension as collective punishment of Palestinians. The accusation stems from reports by the Israeli secret service, while UNRWA has not completed its investigation.
UNRWA operates 58 refugee camps in the Middle East and runs 706 schools and 140 health facilities. In essence, UNRWA is the most crucial support for displaced Palestinians. The withdrawal of donations threatens to exacerbate the already severe hunger and supply crisis caused by Israel’s war to an unprecedented level.

Turkish police attacked and detained several youths protesting the Turkish multinational conglomerate Zorlu Holding in solidarity with Palestine. Police also attempted to prevent bystanders from filming the protest. The protesters called for the boycott of the Israeli-linked conglomerate and the termination of “relations with Zionists.”
Zorlu Holding is one of the largest conglomerates in Turkey, known for its significant presence in various sectors, including textiles, energy, electronics, and real estate. Additionally, they are the largest Turkish capital group in Israel. They engage in energy investments in collaboration with the Israeli government, generating electricity in Israel’s official institutions and industrial facilities.
The firm has a partnership in three different electricity generation plants across occupied Palestine, generating over 1,000 MW of electricity annually, meeting at least 7% of Israel’s annual needs. One of these plants, located near Ashkelon on the Gaza border, continues to operate, allegedly providing economic and logistical support to Israeli military actions in the region, while Palestinians in Gaza face limited access to electricity and fuel.

At least 569 Rohingya refugees were reported dead or missing at sea last year, the highest number in nine years, a UN report revealed. One Rohingya was reported to have died or gone missing for every eight attempting to flee persecution via the sea, making the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal one of the deadliest stretches of water in the world, the UN added.
Recent years have seen a steady increase in Rohingya refugees from mainly Bangladesh and their native Myanmar embarking on sea journeys in search of safe refuge. Last year, a total of 4,491 Rohingya fled those countries in 2023 after 2022 has already seen a 360% increase compared to 2021.
With the rise of anti-Rohingya sentiment across South and Southeast Asia, the persecuted majority Muslim ethnic group from Myanmar, often described as the most persecuted minority in the world, has been fleeing crowded refugee camps and rising discrimination in Bangladesh, where nearly one million Rohingya refugees reside. Simultaneously, with heavy fighting having erupted again in their native Rakhine State of Myanmar, many of the Rohingya that have stayed in the country after years of genocidal attacks at the hands of the Myanmar military are now attempting the dangerous escape on boats.
64% of Rohingya who have taken to the boats to seek safe refuge attempted to do so in Indonesia. In what is their most significant influx in eight years, more than 1,500 Rohingya refugees arrived on Indonesian shores throughout November and December last year. Previously, people there had welcomed the refugees. However, this time, villagers and the military pushed boats back out to sea, leaving the stateless Rohingya people with no safe place to be.

The conflict in Sudan has led to one of the fastest-unfolding crises globally, with over 7.4 million people displaced inside and outside the country since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023. The number of people displaced in Sudan has increased by about 611,000 over the past month, mainly due to conflict-induced displacement from Aj Jazirah and other states. The expansion of fighting between the SAF and RSF into central and eastern Sudan—the country’s crop production regions—has driven a significant increase in humanitarian needs.
Many largely uncoordinated mediation efforts have failed to produce results, and other states have taken sides in the war. Many groups have also joined the fighting, breaking a ceasefire in southwestern Sudan. The conflict risks destabilizing the fragile peace in neighboring countries.

India is celebrating Republic Day, marking the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, following the defeat of British colonialism.
The British Empire killed an estimated 165 million Indians during less than half of its almost 100-year occupation of India and looted at least $45 trillion of the country's wealth. The despised colonizers faced constant uprisings, which were nearly impossible to crush once and for all. Even with tens of thousands of British troops deployed, millions of Indians from different religions and castes united in their commitment to achieve liberation. Wherever the British turned, they faced hostility. This drove them to such levels of paranoia that they even saw the Chapati, now a staple of the British diet, as a threat.
