At least 11 people were killed and many more injured in explosions at an M23 rally in Bukavu, eastern DR Congo. The attack comes after the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels took hold of the city earlier this month.
The Rwanda-backed M23 rebels blamed the bombing on the Congolese government. Meanwhile, DR Congo President Félix Tshisekedi attributed the attack to unspecified “foreign” forces.
M23 also claimed that attackers were among the dead. However, rebels and officials gave conflicting reports on the number of attackers and victims.

Violent clashes continue during the 24-hour national strike in Athens, Greece. Hundreds of thousands flood the streets across the country, paralysing entire cities.
The strike reflects the mounting public anger after years of austerity. It takes place on the second anniversary of Greece’s deadliest train crash in 2023, when at least 57 people died in a head-on collision between two trains.
The vast majority of Greeks blame austerity measures for the failure of safety systems that led to the deadly crash. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ right-wing government, re-elected after the disaster in 2023, has faced repeated criticism from victims’ relatives for refusing to launch a parliamentary inquiry into political responsibility.

“Jenin refugee camp does not exist right now”—Listen to Palestinian journalist Mariam Barghouti describing the devastating effects of the Israeli military operation on Jenin camp.
As Israel’s Operation Iron Wall enters its sixth week, analysts say that Israel’s long-standing goal to annex the occupied Palestinian territory is now clearer than ever. Recently, Israel deployed tanks in the West Bank for the first time in more than 20 years. Meanwhile, Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the army will remain in some refugee camps “for the next year” to ensure that residents cannot return.
The Israeli military operation has killed about 60 people, including 8 children. Over 40,000 refugees have been displaced, with at least 90% of the Jenin camp completely displaced. The population in the West Bank is experiencing forced displacement that surpasses the levels seen in 1967.

EU-funded repression and crackdowns combined with the expansion of smuggling networks, often in collusion with authorities, have turned migration routes into war zones.
The EU hails this as a victory, recently rewarding Bulgaria and Romania with Schengen membership in exchange for their roles as border enforcers. But this “success” comes at a brutal cost. Refugees and migrants, forced to flee wars and economic crises fueled by Western policies, face increasing repression, violence, and even death at Europe’s militarized borders.

🟡 HAPPENING NOW: First images of Nael Barghouti, the longest-serving Palestinian political prisoner, being freed after spending 45 years in Israeli jails.
Nael was released in a prisoner exchange in 2011 after serving 34 consecutive years. However, in 2014, he was re-arrested along with 70 other freed prisoners in violation of the agreement. The Israeli government decided to reinstate his original 117-year sentence in military prison.
Today Nael has been forcibly deported to Egypt, along with nearly 100 other Palestinian prisoners released in this batch. The Israeli occupation prevented him from returning to his hometown of Kobar, in occupied Palestine.

Ukraine is now set to agree to the looting of its natural resources. On Friday, President Zelensky will meet Trump in New York to finalize an agreement granting US corporations access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, valued in the trillions.
Washington has funneled military aid to Ukraine, presenting itself as Kyiv’s key ally. But now, as the war drags on, the economic reality is setting in—the US wants returns on its investment, reinforcing a long history of US exploitation of weaker nations. With China dominating rare earth production, the US sees Ukraine’s resources as key to maintaining its global influence.
Meanwhile, at the start, Ukraine was full of optimism, believing Western promises of support and partnership. Now, it finds itself trapped entirely dependent on US support. Rejecting the deal would mean losing US backing, leaving Ukraine to fend for itself in a war it cannot sustain.

Evo Morales has adopted a new party, the “Victory Front”, with which to run for the presidency at this year’s elections in Bolivia. His supporters are now resigning en masse from the ruling Movement Towards Socialism party (MAS) that he’s led for decades.
The years-long faction fight against President Luis Arce, over who gets to be the party’s presidential candidate, was settled by local courts, which ruled in favor of Arce’s supporters, who have now taken over the MAS.

During the night, Israel launched several airstrikes on various sites in southern Syria, targeting Suwayda, Deraa, and the countryside of Damascus, killing at least two people.
The attacks coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s call to demilitarize southern Syria and push out Syrian army forces from Quneitra, Deraa, and Suwayda. The Israeli military stated that these areas “constitute a threat to the citizens of the State of Israel” and vowed to continue its aggression.
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized that the airstrikes were part of a “new policy” aimed at "taming" southern Syria. He further declared, “Israel will not allow southern Syria to become southern Lebanon.” The same night, the Israeli army also targeted eastern Lebanon, killing at least two people.
In response to the airstrikes, people in Damascus took to the streets to show solidarity with the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham-led government and to demand it defend itself by directly attacking Tel Aviv.

Just two years before China’s Nationalist government fled to the island of Taiwan after losing to the Communists in mainland China, Nationalist troops brutally massacred up to 30,000 people in Taiwan in the name of anti-communism. These troops acted under the direct orders of Chiang Kai-Shek. He would go on to rule the island with an iron fist for several decades. Cubans rallied in Guantanamo to call for the removal of the US’ torture camp. Its naval base is located on land that was stolen from Cuba. Local communist party leaders condemned Trump’s plans to deport migrants to the camp in violation of their human rights.
The Guantanamo Bay naval base is seen as a constant threat to Cuba’s sovereignty. Speakers at the rally pointed out that it has been used to plan coups and counter-revolutionary activity ever since 1959. Now that the current US government is taking an even more aggressive stance towards the island, there are fears that such activities at the base could intensify.

“Long live Hind’s Hall!”—Students stormed a building and launched a sit-in at Barnard College to demand amnesty for students expelled for a pro-Palestine action. After six hours, the students secured a meeting between university officials and two to three students that will take place today.
Two students were expelled for disrupting a “history of modern Israel” class on January 21 which students said “dodged questions of Palestinian self-determination and whitewashed the ongoing genocide.” Last spring, Columbia suspended scores of students for participating in the Palestine solidarity student encampment.
Students posed four demands to the administration. These included an immediate reversal of the two Barnard students’ expulsions, amnesty for all students disciplined for pro-Palestine action or thought, a public meeting with Barnard’s President and Dean, and the abolition of the “corrupt Barnard disciplinary process”.

456 Palestinians were released from Israeli prisons, including 15 medical staff members and patients taken during the Israeli invasion of Kamal Adwan Hospital. Many prisoners arrived in a severely emaciated state, unable to walk due to brutal beatings and torture. They reported severe physical abuse, with beatings focused on the chest that fractured their ribs. One prisoner had an amputated hand and another an amputated foot, both due to untreated health conditions, including diabetes.
Israel keeps delaying the release of dozens of Palestinian hostages, including 24 children. Negotiations for the second phase have not begun, as Israeli violations of the ceasefire continue. In the last 48 hours, Gaza hospitals received 17 bodies and 19 injured Palestinians.

US President Donald Trump depicted his vision of “Trump’s Gaza” through an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform.
The video presents a digitally reimagined Gaza Strip, transformed into what Trump calls the “Riviera of the Middle East.” It features AI-generated images of Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, and Elon Musk, amidst golden statues and piles of money.
The accompanying soundtrack reinforces the message with lyrics such as: “Donald's coming to set you free, bringing the light for all to see. No more tunnels, no more fear. Trump Gaza is finally here.” The video comes as Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, announced plans to host a summit of real estate developers to discuss Gaza’s future.

Today, in Black History Month, we commemorate Frantz Fanon, the Black Caribbean anti-colonial revolutionary who passed away in 1961. Fanon was a prominent theorist, psychiatrist, and political philosopher who actively participated in armed liberation struggles. During World War II, he volunteered to serve in Europe against the fascists and later supported the Algerian War of Independence against the French colonizers.
Fanon’s influential works, including “Black Skin, White Masks” and “The Wretched of the Earth,” provide critical insights into racism, colonialism, and the dynamics of anti-colonial struggle. His ideas have inspired decolonization movements and revolutionaries worldwide.
Fanon’s work continues to shape discussions on imperialism, oppression, and the ongoing struggles for liberation and justice.
