More than 300 farmers tried to storm a supermarket in Avignon, France, setting fire to barricades in front of its doors and occupying its parking lot with tractors in protest “against unfair payment.” The Young Farmers’ Union, which led the protest, emphasized they are working at a loss, under pressure from large-scale retail negotiators to cut prices.
“Through this cry of alarm, we are denouncing the measures announced by our government, which is slow in coming, and promises that have not been kept” - France’s government is failing to deliver on promises to protect farmers from exploitative corporate policies.
“We are fed up. [...] Today we can’t take it anymore, and we have to go out into the street”’ - said another union spokesperson.
The protests continue a broad trend in several EU countries, with farmers rising up against working conditions and regulations linked to EU laws. The protests echo last week’s week-long farmers’ revolt in Berlin, Germany. Similar protests have erupted in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other EU countries in recent months.

Iran's IRGC launched several ballistic missile attacks against alleged Israeli espionage targets and a base hosting U.S. military personnel in Iraq's Kurdistan region. Another IRGC-claimed long-range missile attack also hit targets in northern Syria, allegedly linked to the so-called Islamic State.
The strikes on targets in Syria came in response to a devastating ISIS-claimed bombing in Iran's Kerman earlier this year, in which at least 103 were killed, according to Iranian state media. The alleged Mossad base in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region was reportedly linked to several targeted killings of senior IRGC commanders since October 7.
The attack also killed oil tycoon Peshraw Dizayee in Erbil, who reportedly facilitated oil exports to Israel. In total, local authorities report at least four dead and five wounded.
Bases of the U.S.-led coalition in Syria and Iraq have come under fire over 100 times since the Palestinian October 7 offensive with rockets and threatening attacks by various non-state militias in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel's war on Gaza. As a result, the U.S. increased its military presence in Iraq and Syria with 1,500 troops, officially announced in early January.

With the city authorities’ approval, about 500 joined a far-right anti-immigrant torchlight march through central Paris, an annual event organized by the French far-right group Paris-Fierte. As the fascists marched through the heart of Paris near the monument to Saint Genevieve, the patroness of the French capital, about 300 anti-fascists organized a counter-protest under heavy police surveillance. However, no clashes were reported.
The march comes as French President Emmanuel Macron’s teamed up with the far-right to pass a controversial new anti-immigration bill last month. Lawmakers from Macron’s centrist party voted for the bill along with the conservative Les Républicains and fascist leader Marine Le Pen’s National Rally Party.
The recent rise in anti-immigrant and far-right rallies is not unique to France. Just in recent weeks, fascists have rallied across Europe, with hundreds marching through Rome, Italy, while doing the Roman Salute. Meanwhile, the far-right in Germany discussed the deportation of millions of migrants while reaching an all-time high approval rate in nationwide polls.

An estimated 68,000 people flooded the streets of the Basque city of Bilbao, Spain, demanding the release and fair treatment of prisoners of the now-disbanded Euskaid Ta Askatasuna (ETA) Basque separatist group. This year’s annual protest saw widespread support from political parties, trade unions, and pro-independence organizations.
The protesters accused the Spanish government of unfairly treating ETA prisoners under the “laws of exception” that led to the worse treatment of ETA prisoners compared to others. Even though the group disbanded in 2018, 134 former ETA members remain in Spanish prisons, eight in French prisons, and around 20 remain exiled abroad, according to Spanish news agency Efe. Until last year, Spanish authorities pursued the practice of scattering Basque prisoners throughout Spain, making it especially difficult for family and friends to visit.
ETA was an armed leftist group seeking independence for the Basque Country and the Basque people, constituting an ethnic minority in Spain and France. Founded in 1959, when fascist dictator Francisco Franco still ruled the country, the group went on to conduct bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings against the repressive government, which was highly centralized and repressed any expression of non-Castilian ethnic minorities, until finally disbanding in 2018.

Thousands of communists and socialists participated in this year's massive "Luxemburg Liebknecht Lenin" (LLL) protest in Berlin. The annual protest tradition follows the international Luxemburg Conference, which saw record turnout numbers this year to discuss socialist perspectives.
Drawing participants from across the country, the event culminates in a march to the "Cemetery of Socialists" in the capital, commemorating the legacies of Rosa Luxemburg, Karl Liebknecht, and Vladimir Lenin.
Communist protesters faced brutal police aggression, resulting in severe injuries and arrests, all triggered by what the police claimed were "illegal" slogans supporting Palestine. This year's LLL demonstration also placed a strong focus on Israel's war on Gaza.
Thousands refused to disperse without the release of the arrested person, which ended in the police giving in. During attempting further arrests, the police were met with resistance as activists held their ground.

"Free Palestine" chants echoed at the international Rosa Luxemburg conference in Berlin, with record turnout numbers this year. Activists demanded justice for Gaza and an immediate ceasefire on stage. Organizers estimate that 4,000 people attended the annual conference to discuss socialist perspectives.
The event is named after the iconic communist Rosa Luxemburg, co-founder of the German Communist Party and leader of the 1919 Spartacus Uprising, the attempted revolutionary seizure of power in the aftermath of the First World War.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution condemning “in the strongest terms” the attacks by Yemen’s Ansarallah off the coast of Yemen and demanding that the group immediately cease all such attacks.
Eleven countries voted in favor of the draft resolution, while four—Russia, China, Algeria, and Mozambique—abstained, and none voted against it. The US and UK, who have just bombed Yemen in response, have previously rejected three amendments by Russia, including one linking Ansarallah’s attacks to Israel’s war on Gaza. Despite this, Russia and China, who are permanent council members, could veto but chose not to, proving that when the global flow of capital is at stake, they choose the side of capital.
Not long after October 7 and the beginning of Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip and its population, Ansarallah has become an increasingly influential front against Israel by preventing Israeli-linked ships and those heading for occupied Palestine from passing through the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, and the Red Sea. With the critical shipping route along the Red Sea being one of the busiest in the whole world, Ansarallah’s blockade has acutely disrupted the global flow of capital, proving a thorn in the side of global imperialism.

News outlets worldwide have been warning that China “aims to invade Taiwan.” And with elections on the island upcoming, local politicians have called them “a choice between war and peace.” But what’s the root of the China-Taiwan dispute? Here’s a quick guide.
Taiwan has been one with mainland China since the Qing dynasty took over the island in 1683. In 1895, the Qing dynasty handed over Taiwan to the expanding Japanese Empire. Meanwhile, in 1912, revolutionary forces overthrew the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China (ROC). When the Japanese invaded China in 1937, the Chinese led a fierce liberation war against them under the leadership of the nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) and the Communist Party of China (CPC). Following the end of WWII, civil war erupted in China until the CPC eventually defeated the KMT in 1949, leaving Chiang Kai-shek’s KMT to retreat to Taiwan along with almost two million people, including China’s bureaucratic and political elite and rich industrialists to establish the ROC on the island.
When the CPC prepared to reunify Taiwan with the rest of China, the US militarily intervened to prevent the communist revolution from spreading to the island. In 1979, the US started to recognize the People’s Republic of China (PRC), pursuing a policy of dual recognition, only further driving a wedge between Taiwan and the mainland by promoting Taiwan as a nation separate from China.
The government in Taiwan has since shifted to the neoliberal Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which pursues a hawkish stance towards the PRC. With the imperialist rivalry between the US and China having intensified in recent decades, the DPP, together with the US, has been trying to prevent any attempts at peaceful reunification of Taiwan with mainland China.

Addressing 4,000 guests at the annual socialist conference, Lauesen spoke about perspectives to bring down the imperialist system.
Torkil Lauesen was a former member of the so-called underground Blekingegade group, which supported liberation movements in the Global South during the 1970s and 1980s, also resorting to militant methods. Today he is primarily a book author, publishing his detailed analysis of fighting the capitalist world system through a global perspective.

Police attacked communist protesters in Berlin causing severe injuries. The pretext, according to police, was "illegal" Palestine solidarity slogans. Israel’s war on Gaza dominated this year's "Luxemburg Liebknecht Lenin" (LLL) demonstration.

Dutch police attacked anti-racist citizens protesting the far-right who gathered to burn the Koran in the city of Arnhem.
Local protesters gathered in Arnhem city center ahead of a Koran burning event announced by racist group PEGIDA. The protesters far outnumbered PEGIDA who eventually appeared and were protected and escorted by police, but they struggled to burn the Holy book amidst the local opposition.
Despite being heavily repressed by police, anti-racists managed to seize the Koran from PEGIDA whose planned event ended in failure as a result.

Millions marched in the capital of Yemen, Sanaa, against the bombing of Yemen by the US and its allies.
The US and UK launched 73 bombardments against Yemen on January 11, 2024, and attacked the International Airport.
When Israel declared war on Gaza in October 2023, Yemen’s Ansarallah, commonly referred to as the 'Houthis,' joined the war on the side of the Palestinian people a month later by blocking the Red Sea.
Yemen’s Red Sea blockade has turned around more than 2,000 ships. The threat to the flow of world capital clearly bothered the West more than Israel’s months-long war against Gaza.
Senior Ansarallah official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti said that Yemen’s goal is to 'stop the crimes of genocide in Gaza' while the US and UK are 'supporting and protecting its perpetrators.'
'Every individual in this world is faced with two choices that have no third: Either to stand with the victims of genocide or to stand with its perpetrators,' he added.
How does Israel defend itself against the genocide accusation in the International Criminal Court? One tactic: It simply links the applicant South Africa to Gaza's armed groups. Today marks the second day of the historic court case centered around Israel's legal team's response to yesterday's indictment of South Africa.
Israel's responses focused on critical questions that have been addressed by countless investigations and reports since the beginning of the war, such as the question of "self-defense." ICJ President Joan Donoghue ended the two-day hearing by saying the court would announce its decision in the coming days.
