red. Rewind 2023: In the summer of this year, the Mediterranean saw one of its worst-ever boat disasters, leaving over 500 migrants dead. On June 14, the fishing trawler Adriana was heading for Italy when it sank in the Ionian Sea off the Greek coast. The approximately 750 migrants onboard, mainly from Pakistan, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt, were crammed aboard the overcrowded vessel when it sank. Although 82 bodies were recovered, it is believed that hundreds of people drowned in the most horrific circumstances. There were only 104 survivors, and none of them were women and children. The infamous Greek Coast Guard and EU border protection agency Frontex were strongly criticized for their slow responses.

Following the tragedy, left-wing groups in Greece, including trade unions and the Communist Party, supported protests expressing solidarity with the migrants and opposing the controversial pushbacks and border fences used by the Greek government to deter migrants. Unsurprisingly, the protests were met with police violence.

During massive strikes and protests against reform plans that would remove the iconic Jeepney ride from the streets, thousands of public transport workers paralyzed the central Philippine capital, Manila.

Jeepneys are a crucial pillar of the Philippines' public transportation system, providing an affordable and accessible means of transportation for millions of Filipino workers, particularly in urban areas.

The government has imposed a deadline, requiring Jeepney drivers to surrender their franchises and establish cooperatives by December 31. However, activists are actively challenging this decision in the Supreme Court.

Unions express deep concern, anticipating that by 2024, up to 140,000 drivers and 60,000 operators could face the loss of their livelihoods.

Palestinians fiercely resisted Israeli occupation forces during one of the most extensive incursions into the occupied West Bank since October 7. The multiple Israeli raids targeted branches of five different money exchange shops in 10 cities, including Jenin, Ramallah, and Hebron. Israeli forces arrested at least 25 Palestinians, among them workers and shop owners.

Palestinian youths confronted the invading forces with stones, molotovs and other objects. Meanwhile, resistance fighters in Jenin shot at the invading forces. In a first, Israeli forces also came under fire in Ramallah, the administrative headquarters of the Palestinian Authority.

The Israeli forces responded using tear gas and stun grenades to clear the streets, followed by the use of explosives to break into the money exchange shops, where the soldiers seized several documents and cash.

Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant claimed that the shops have been used by the resistance forces to finance their activities, declaring the five money exchange shops in the West Bank to be associated with “terror organizations.”

The Roboski massacre of Kurdish civilians in Turkey occurred on this day in 2011. The majority of the victims were children in the northern province of Şırnak, and they were killed after the Turkish air force bombed a caravan of border traders, resulting in the murder of 34 civilians. Only four people managed to escape with their lives.

The families of those murdered are still fighting for justice to this day, as the Turkish state refuses to hold anyone accountable. In fact, the only people arrested in connection with this case are family members of the victims and other activists who organized mobilizations in Turkey to demand justice.

Hundreds of Indonesian university students stormed a refugee shelter, forcefully evicting Rohingya refugees and demanding their immediate deportation. Footage showed Rohingya women and children being forced to sit on the ground in tears. At the same time, the mob trampled over their belongings and attempted to attack them. The students forced the 137 Rohingya refugees out of the temporary shelter and onto trucks ready to be deported.

The storming of the refugee shelter in the city of Banda Aceh marks just the latest incident in a string of attacks against the persecuted minority from Myanmar seeking refuge in Indonesia. The UN said that the attack was the result of a coordinated online campaign of misinformation and hate speech, as many residents claim the refugees take scarce resources and come into conflict with locals. More than 1,500 Rohingya refugees have arrived on the shores of Aceh since mid-November in what the UN says is their most significant influx in eight years.

Anti-Rohingya sentiment escalated in 2017 when the Muslim Rohingya population in Myanmar was the target of a genocide by the Myanmar military. The military killed more than 25,000 Rohingyas and forced over 700,000 to flee their homeland, with many seeking refuge in neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and India. With anti-Rohingya violence intensifying in those countries, many attempt deadly sea journeys to Malaysia and Indonesia, where they’re frequently met with the same discrimination.

As a result of ongoing persecution in Myanmar and anti-Rohingya sentiment growing across the region, many remain terrified and traumatized. The dire situation for the stateless Rohingya people leaves one to ask if they are the most persecuted minority in the world, as they are often described.

Did you know that 161 years today the US executed 38 Native Americans in the largest mass execution in its history? On 26 December 1862 38 Dakota nation members were hung in Mankato, Minnesota for their role in the US Dakota War. Two days after the Dakota had surrendered at Camp Release on 26 September a military commission began trying those accused of taking part in the war. 303 men were sentenced to death and 16 were sent to prison.

Although one prisoner received a last-minute reprieve the other 38 were hung in front of an estimated 4,000 spectators on a specially constructed scaffold and were left dangling on the scaffold for half an hour.

The Dakota War began in August 1862 when the Dakota, who were facing starvation and displacement confronted white settlers at the Lower Sioux Agency in south-west Minnesota. The attacks were provoked by efforts by white settlers to force the Dakota to cede their land and move to reservations. A crop failure in 1861 and a harsh winter had pushed the Dakota to the brink of starvation.

Argentina's worker's unions took to the streets of Buenos Aires yesterday for the second set of mass protests since self-described "anarcho-capitalist" President Javier Milei took power. The rally, organized by the two largest union confederations, CGT and CTA, condemned the "shock therapy" package presented by Milei last week.

The package Milei announced includes repealing over 300 existing laws designed to provide social protection and benefits. This includes cutting subsidies for public transport, fuel, and essential services such as electricity and water and abolishing most workers' rights and renters' rights. Abolishing measures designed to protect local industry from foreign multinationals, ending price controls of essential goods, and the eventual privatization of almost every state company.

Milei has also announced a repression law to criminalize social protest to protect himself from the inevitable protests as austerity bites. The law includes a ban on any protests that block traffic and allows police to break up any protests without the need for a prior warrant.

Internationally, Milei has had an uneven time. After pledging to break ties to "communist China" during the campaign, the Chinese government has since withdrawn its currency swap agreement that provided billions in cheap credit for Argentina. However, he has found friends in Washington and claims that the US government has already called him regarding access to the country's vast lithium reserves.

Hundreds of Chinese communist youths gathered for a huge demonstration at the Mao Zedong Square in the city of Shaoshan, Mao’s birthplace, on the eve of the communist leader’s birthday. With paroles echoing across the square, the protesters condemned the capitalist restoration policies of the ruling Communist Party of China, calling for a return to socialism and collectivization.

The protests were part of broader celebrations of the 130th anniversary of Mao’s birth; over 111,000 people visited his hometown, Shaoshan, in Hunan province, marking a 713% increase from last year, according to local authorities, who organized various activities to commemorate the special event.

Not long after the death of the Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong in 1976, his successor Deng Xiaoping rose to power and led China through a series of market-economy reforms, eliminating all opposition along the way. Deng’s policies earned him the reputation of “Architect of Modern China.”

“Agony. The word “torture” is little.” – a survivor of Israeli captivity told red. Media. Many more have shared horrifying testimonies of their time in captivity, marked by severe physical and psychological abuse.

The UN and several human rights organizations have confirmed that Israeli forces are carrying out field executions against civilians in Gaza after forcibly removing them from displacement centers and stripping them.

In past weeks, there have been countless reports, photos, and videos showing Israel’s inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners across Gaza; Israeli forces are rounding up thousand of Palestinians, including children, stripping them to their underwear. Bound and blindfolded, they are then sent to undisclosed detention camps, where they spend days subjected to torture, hunger, and the cold.

Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners marks a clear violation of international law as humiliating and publishing humiliating images of prisoners is a violation of the Geneva Conventions, which states prisoners of war “shall at all times be humanely treated and protected, particularly against acts of violence, from insults and from public curiosity.”

The largest migrant caravan of 2023, known as the 'poverty exodus,' has recently departed from Southern Mexico, comprising approximately 10,000 individuals from 24 countries en route to the US border.

The caravan serves as both a migration movement and a protest against Mexican authorities. It has set off due to the frustration of thousands waiting at the Guatemala-Mexico border, seeking processing at the Tapachula checkpoint but receiving no response from Mexican border staff. Consequently, driven by desperation, the crowd has entered the country without official authorization.

Within this group, chants resonate, echoing demands for improved treatment in Mexico and underscoring their inability to access legal entry into the country. This predicament arises from heightened pressure from the United States, forcing Mexico to adopt stricter anti-migrant policies to impede the flow of refugees from Central America to the US.
President AMLO has obliged by blocking routes through Mexico.

However, he also highlights the significant role played by US sanctions against nations such as Cuba and Venezuela in propelling large-scale migration from the region. AMLO asserts that addressing these structural issues is imperative to mitigating the migration crisis, emphasizing that it will persist unless these root causes are effectively tackled.

red. Rewind 2023: Refugee Crisis Worldwide. 2023 has been marked by an escalating worldwide refugee crisis as tens of millions of people have been on the move fleeing political persecution, war, or poverty. According to the UN, more than 114 million people have been forced to leave their homes due to war and violence a figure that increased by 4 million from May to October. Nearly 90% of those who are forced to leave their homes come from low and middle-income countries. Here is a roundup of some of the worst refugee crises of 2023.

Following the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in April, at least 6 million people have been internally displaced while more than 1.2 million have fled the country. The war has also led to a humanitarian crisis that has affected 25 million people half of Sudan's population. A significant number of refugees have continued to attempt to enter the US through the border with Mexico with an estimated peak of 9,000 refugees apprehended by US officials daily. 132, 648 were apprehended in July a figure that rose to 181,059 in August. At the southwest border more than 2.4 million people have attempted to cross the border.

Israel's brutal bombardment of the Gaza Strip since October 7 has displaced 1.9 million people more than 85% of the population of the enclave according to the UN. Refugees in Gaza have been forced to stay in refugee camps, UN shelters, schools, or even outside sometimes washing in polluted seawater. 2023 has seen at least 2,500 refugees die or go missing when attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

"It's not just the French who are our problems. After months of tension, massive protests outside the foreign military bases, and France's pushing their regional partners to launch a military invasion against Niger, Paris withdrew its last troops. Since the coup against Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, the West has been provoking an inter-African war by pushing ECOWAS and Western-aligned countries to intervene militarily in Niger. Mao Zedong, the co-founder of the Communist Party of China, was born 130 years ago today in Shaoshan. In 1949, after 28 years of revolutionary struggle, Mao founded the People’s Republic of China, bringing the Communist Party of China to power in an extraordinary moment in Chinese, 20th-century, and revolutionary history. Born into a peasant family in the 19th century, he rose to lead China, transforming it from a poverty-stricken feudal nation into a socialist society.

Mao and others were concerned that a revisionist elite led by Deng Xiaoping had emerged within the party, seeking to re-establish capitalism in China. In 1966, he launched the Cultural Revolution to combat this capitalist-bourgeois ideology. Mao also distinctly distanced himself from the revisionist direction the Soviet Union took following the death of Stalin.

Following Mao’s death in 1976, emerging bourgeois elements within the party executed a coup d’état and reinstated capitalism under the direction of Deng Xiaoping and his successors, who govern China today.

During his 27 years in power, Mao improved life expectancy and literacy rates and increased the number of doctors. He also drove imperialism out of China by establishing the People's Republic. Significant technological advances occurred during his leadership, including the launch of a satellite.
