Thousands have simulated a massacre in protest of Israel’s ongoing war of extermination against Gaza in the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastián. Under the slogan “Stop Genocide,” more than 250 Basque cultural creators called for the protest.

In a striking comparison to the 1937 massacre in Guernica, air raid sirens echoed during the rally. One thousand six hundred civilians were killed in the Basque village by fascist dictator Francisco Franco’s forces with the help of Nazi Germany, an event deeply ingrained into Basque memory.

Today, we remember the worst chemical gas attack against civilians in history: the Halabja massacre. Ordered by Saddam Hussein in 1988, this atrocity targeted the Kurdish city during the Iran-Iraq War.

The UN classified the massacre as genocide, highlighting its severity. Over 7,000 people were killed, the majority of whom were civilians. This massacre was a key part of a broader counterinsurgency campaign against oppressed Kurds. These Kurds had sided with the Iranians in their struggle against Hussein.

The massacre was made possible through both direct and indirect support from the US and Germany. These countries manufactured and supplied the poison gas used in the attack. The aftermath of the Halabja massacre is haunting, with many victims suffering long-term effects. These include cancer, skin diseases, infertility, and congenital deformities.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz was cooked at a press conference by Malaysia’s PM over Germany’s one-sided rhetoric on Israel, criticizing Scholz’s selective condemnation of violence. The Federal Republic of Germany has probably been Israel’s most uncritical ally since its foundation, devoting itself to backing the occupying state no matter what.

“The solution is not just releasing the hostages,” – warned Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim.

Another massacre by Israeli occupation forces has killed over 60 Palestinian civilians. These individuals had gathered in Gaza to obtain humanitarian aid. They were targeted with gunfire from helicopters and tanks near the Kuwait roundabout, on the outskirts of Gaza City. Over 160 injured individuals arrived at hospitals, many in critical condition.

As people in northern Gaza face dire famine caused by Israel’s government, Israeli forces persist in carrying out deliberate massacres in the besieged enclave. The targeting of civilians seeking humanitarian aid has continued for the fifth consecutive day. According to the Geneva-based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the total number of casualties from the “Flour Massacres” has now reached over 500 deaths.

Unrest and militant student protests have been raging for days in Chilpancingo, south of Mexico City after a police officer reportedly shot and killed an unarmed student in Guerrero. Protests have further escalated in several parts of the country when it was reported that the police shooter was on the run.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has condemned the killing and accused local authorities of complicity in aiding the fugitive police shooter, further fueling public anger. The victim’s mother has also spoken out, criticizing the police for protecting their colleague instead of ensuring justice for her son.

The protests, primarily led by students from the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico, have turned violent in some instances, with reports of police officers being attacked with slingshots and government vehicles being set on fire. Previous protests saw students storming local government buildings.

Today marks four years since police murdered Black woman Breonna Taylor in cold blood. However, with no police officers ever having been charged with shooting and killing Taylor, her killers continue to walk freely.

In the middle of the night, plainclothes police officers stormed the 26-year-old Black medical worker’s apartment in Louisville, Kentucky. Police indiscriminately fired dozens of shots, five of which fatally hit Taylor.

The incident was riddled with controversies. The police officers made false claims to obtain the warrant, and during the raid, the police did not follow protocol. The subsequent police account included multiple errors.

The murder of Taylor sparked months of protests demanding the arrest of her killers and them being charged with murder. Yet, no officer has ever been charged with shooting Taylor, and only charging four police officers with federal civil rights violations. The only officer who faced federal charges in the raid was found “not guilty.”

Niger's transitional government is kicking the US military out of their country, declaring the presence "illegal." US Department of Defense civilian staff will also be expelled. The move comes just six months after the French army was sent packing by Niger's military authorities, who took power in a coup last summer.

Announcing Niger's decision, Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane hit back at US allegations that Niger may give Iran secret access to its uranium mines. He said it is "common knowledge" that Niger's uranium is "totally controlled by France."

The US claim about a secret Niamey-Tehran uranium agreement was made during a visit by US officials to Niamey last week, which Abdaramane said violated diplomatic protocol.

Niger's move is a huge blow to the US which built its largest and most expensive drone base in US history in the Nigerien city of Agadez. "Nigerien drone base 201" has a 6,200 ft runway and was built for $110 million.

After the tragic death of 18-year-old Wanys at the hands of the police, tensions have reached a boiling point as riots took to the streets, targeting a police station in La Courneuve, France, four days later. The incident occurred following a fatal collision between a police vehicle and a scooter carrying two young men, sparking outrage among the local community.

The police station was targeted with fireworks and Molotov cocktails with the presence of police officers inside the building. In response, French police deployed additional forces, arresting six individuals and firing 104 shots from LBDs and stun grenades.

This latest incident adds to a disturbing trend of police brutality in France, with 16 individuals killed by law enforcement in the past year and a half alone, all under the pretext of “failure to comply.”

Media outlets echoed the police’s version, which asserted that the collision was unavoidable. However, a circulating video on social media contradicts this narrative, clearly showing the police vehicle obstructing the scooter’s path before the collision. Despite these discrepancies, the media’s narrative, previously utilized in similar cases like the murder of Nahel last June or the recent death of a 22-year-old in Marseille, continues to dominate public discourse.

Israel is automating its killing machines.

Since the beginning of Israel's relentless war on the Gaza Strip, hundreds of Palestinian civilians have been killed or wounded by Israeli snipers and “quad copter drones.” Despite the limited information available, reports from Israeli media and manufacturer videos shows the types of weapons being tested and utilized in Gaza.

The use of these new weapons, along with the remote operation of drones and autonomous weapons, is changing the nature of modern wars. By distancing soldiers from the act of killing, desensitizing them to the actual impact of their actions. Moreover, the use of such weaponry makes it more complicated to hold those soldiers responsible for their crimes, as tracing the origins of attacks becomes increasingly difficult.

Argentine police clashed with workers. The protest was against the closure of the National Cinema Institute (INCAA). Workers in the cultural sector held a press conference in front of the iconic Gaumont Cinema. Suddenly, police charged at them, wielding batons and pepper spray.

Most INCAA workers have already been fired. This action is part of the government's preparation to close the Institute. It aligns with President Javier Milei's neoliberal agenda, which aims to reduce the state's presence in all areas except repression.

Inflation has risen to 254%, significantly higher than the 160% rate he inherited. The past week saw numerous strikes, with teachers, airline workers, transport workers, and public sector unions participating. A possible general strike is looming.

Additionally, President Milei is struggling in Congress. His flagship austerity law faced another setback. It was blocked again yesterday in the Senate.

Watch Norman Finkelstein crush "Destiny" (Steven Bonnell), a gamer turned neoliberal Twitch streamer, for falsely claiming that the four Palestinian children that Israel assassinated on Gaza's beach in 2014 had come out of a "Hamas compound."

During the nearly five-hour debate on the Lex Friedman podcast, the claim was one of the many low points of Destiny and his debating partner, Zionist historian Benny Morris. Finkelstein was partnered with Middle East expert Mouin Rabbani. At one point, Finkelstein was compelled to point out that he and Rabbani had read "ten thousand books" on the topic of Palestine compared to Destiny: "you've read two Wikipedia entries."

The Afro-Brazilian politician Marielle Franco was assassinated on this day in 2018, just 18 months after being elected to the Rio de Janeiro City Council. She fought fearlessly against racist power structures throughout her life, regardless of constant threats.

As a Black woman and single mother, she was dedicated to defending those who lived in the Favelas, sharing her fate. She campaigned against racist police violence, exacerbated by the fascist President Jair Bolsonaro.

Her assassins, who killed her on March 14, 2018, were eventually revealed to be part of the state apparatus—two former police officers with ties to Bolsonaro. Franco will be remembered for challenging Brazil’s conservative political landscape, predominantly occupied by white men, and using her position to amplify the voices of Brazil’s most underrepresented communities.
