Military police officers brutally assaulted a Black family in Brazil. Footage shows police officers attacking a 21-year-old Black man before following him into his house without a warrant. Inside, police continued to assault the young man, also attacking his father in a wheelchair, who attempted to stop the violence.
According to the man’s sister, confrontations not caught on camera involved torture and death threats. He was taken to the hospital before being taken to the police station. His case was registered as contempt and disobedience.
The city of Piracicaba, where the incident occurred, is located in the state of São Paulo, governed by Tarcísio de Freitas, a former minister under previous far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. As Tarcísio enters his second year in office, the number of deaths committed by military police in the state of São Paulo rose by 94% in the first two months of this year compared to the same period in 2023.

A political earthquake rocked eastern Turkey overnight as authorities rejected the results of regional elections in the predominantly Kurdish region of Van and blocked the democratically elected mayor candidate Abdullah Zeydan. The situation escalated rapidly, with footage emerging of armed individuals, purportedly supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AKP party, opening fire on protesters.
Unrest quickly spread beyond Van to other cities in the east, prompting a massive deployment of military and police forces onto the streets by the government. Protests also erupted in Istanbul, with confrontations between water cannons and Molotov cocktails, and protesters setting up burning barricades to block streets.
The AKP, governing in coalition with the nationalist MHP party, suffered significant defeats in the recent regional elections. The pro-Kurdish leftist DEM party emerged as the third strongest force, with Zeydan winning 55.5% of the votes in Van compared to the AKP candidate’s 27.2%. Protesters interpreted the government’s actions as a coup.
Zeydan condemned the blockade against him as “absolute lawlessness” and “a trap set against the Kurdish people.”
This escalation follows years of political tensions between the Turkish state and pro-Kurdish and leftist movements, particularly since the collapse of negotiations with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which has been engaged in a decades-old insurgency.

Hours after a deadly Israeli airstrike hit the Iranian Embassy in Syria, Iranian protesters called for revenge. Almost 200 protesters gathered near the former Israeli embassy in Tehran, burning Israeli, US, and British flags.
The Israeli Air Force bombed the annex building of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus on Monday, marking the first strike by Israel targeting Iranian government buildings. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that seven Iranian military advisers died in the strike, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of its Quds Force.
Israel has long targeted Iran’s military installations in Syria and those of its proxies. However, with the escalation of its war of extermination in the Gaza Strip, it has also ramped up its attacks in Syria and Lebanon, further escalating the already tense situation in the region.

Activists of Palestine Action have occupied the roof of Teledyne Defence & Space that produces components for missiles and F-35 fighter jets used by the Israeli military in Gaza. Production has now been suspended due to this protest.
Those taking part have smashed windows and broken through the roof, resulting in production being totally suspended.

Seven aid workers were killed in an Israeli strike on a convoy in the Gaza Strip, despite coordinating their movements with the Israeli military. The convoy was hit as it was leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, where the team had unloaded more than 100 tons of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza via the maritime route. The aid workers were part of the World Central Kitchen (WCK) team distributing aid in Gaza. The seven workers killed were from Australia, Palestine, Poland, the UK, and a dual citizen of the US and Canada.
“This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable,” said World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore.

Less than 24 hours prior, a drone attack targeted an Israeli naval base in the southern city of Eilat, claimed by the Iraqi Islamic Resistance, backed by Iran.

Fierce clashes broke out in Mexico's capital between trans protesters, supporters, and police officers on International Trans Visibility Day. The annual Trans Visibility Day serves as a global day of protest for the fight for LGBTQ+ rights with a particular focus on trans issues.
Police forces tried to disperse the crowd in front of the National Palace with tear gas. The protests in Mexico City erupted after the first two weeks of the year saw four murders of trans people.
Despite polls indicating overwhelming support, with 82% of Mexico's population backing transgender discrimination protection and gender reassignment not being legally restricted, LGBTQ+ individuals in the country endure disproportionately high levels of violence and hate crimes.
Over the past six years, the rights group Letra S has documented at least 513 targeted killings of LGBTQ people in Mexico, with the majority of these crimes remaining unresolved.

Happy birthday to Alexandra Kollontai – Marxist theorist, politician, diplomat, and the first female minister in history! Kollontai’s influence was highly significant within the Bolshevik party, where she served as the People’s Commissar for Welfare.
Kollontai was a fierce advocate for women’s liberation rooted in dialectic materialism, an analysis that continues to outstrip bourgeois feminism. Following the Bolshevik Revolution, Kollontai fought for radical new liberties for women, which bore fruit when the Soviet Union became the first country to legalize abortion.
Kollontai believed that true women’s liberation could only be achieved through overthrowing capitalism and establishing a socialist society. She argued that women’s liberation should not be limited to legal and political rights but should include economic, social, and sexual emancipation.
Kollontai’s analyses and theories on women’s revolution and communism have stood the test of time and remain the foundation for revolutionaries worldwide.

Bolivia's Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) celebrates its 29th anniversary as a divided force. Luis Arce supporters celebrate in La Paz, while Evo Morales supporters are holding a rival rally in Santa Cruz.
The party that has dominated Bolivian politics since 2005 is now split over whether Evo or Arce get to be the presidential candidate for the MAS next year. The situation will come to a head in May when the electoral authorities decide which factions of the MAS to recognize as legitimate and can put candidates for the elections next year.
The social movements affiliated with the MAS are also split over whether to support Morales or Arce and will be present at both rallies. The most likely outcome of this internal division is the victory of the right in the 2025 elections.

Indonesian security forces violently dispersed a peaceful protest against the military occupation of West Papua. It is reported that at least 65 have been arrested. The crackdown on the protest in the town of Jayapura comes a day after 15 activists were arrested a day earlier for distributing leaflets calling for today’s rally.
The protest comes about a week after a video emerged showing Indonesian troops brutally torturing a Papuan man. Senior army officer Izak Pangemanan confirmed that the video was authentic and that the incident occurred in February. The Indonesian army issued a rare apology, saying that 13 soldiers had been arrested.
The Free Papua Movement has been resisting Indonesian occupation in the Papua region for decades as the latter has been accused of conducting a genocidal campaign against the island’s Indigenous population. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of Papuans have been killed by Indonesian security forces, with many women subjected to sexual violence.
Today marks the birthday of Lebanese revolutionary Georges Abdallah, a communist who fought for Palestine. Abdallah has spent four decades in French prisons, yet France refuses to release him despite having served his sentence, due to Israeli and American pressure.

Disturbing footage showing police violence against two unarmed Black men in Madrid has gone viral on Spanish social media. This has sparked widespread outcry and calls for an investigation into the alleged racist police actions.
In the video, a police officer is seen repeatedly hitting a man on the ground with a baton. He then forcefully knocks down a second young person standing nearby with punches and grabs to the throat.
Official police statements tried to justify the violence by saying the two men were "undermining authority."
In response to the police violence caught on video, protests broke out in Lavapiés plaza on Sunday.
These protests, along with the work of anti-racist groups and left-wing political parties, pressured the Ministry of the Interior to start investigations into the case.
Madrid's right-wing mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has shown support for the police after the incident.
