Did you know the US dropped more bombs on Vietnam than were dropped by all sides during the entire Second World War? Did you also know that Vietnam’s communist guerrillas brought the world’s largest army to its knees anyway?
On this day in 1965, the US began the operation; Vietnam was a country divided into the communist North, led by the revolutionary Ho Chi Minh, and the US-occupied South. Communist troops were organized into the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and the Viet Cong, the underground guerrilla front active in South Vietnam.
Vietnam’s communist forces used effective tactics like hit-and-run attacks and ambushes. In addition, they used complex underground tunnel systems to transport ammunition, retreat, and penetrate deep behind enemy lines.
Their success also came with immense sacrifice, suffering huge losses as the US behaved with cruelty, dropping 20 million gallons of chemical weapons during the war. Up to 3 million Vietnamese lost their lives, mostly civilians.

Israeli settlers entered the northern Gaza Strip to establish a settlement. At least 10 settlers managed to pass through Erez Crossing, while others were erecting structures between the two walls surrounding the Strip. The settlers posted videos of themselves eating strawberries from inside Gaza. They are part of a movement supported by several Israeli politicians and lawmakers, aiming to rebuild settlements in Gaza.
Since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, many states have warned Israel against building settlements in the area. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied any plans to build settlements in Gaza, many of his ministers have participated in conferences advocating for settlements in the region. Meanwhile, people in northern Gaza are starving and facing death while attempting to access aid, yet Israeli settlers continue to mobilize to reoccupy Gaza.

Twenty years ago today, a US-backed coup overthrew Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Coincidentally or not, it happened shortly after Aristide attempted to demand reparations from the Caribbean country’s former colonial overlord, France. The coup and the ensuing 15-year UN occupation led to the total destabilization of the country, paving the way for yet another UN occupation pushed through in 2023.
Do you think Haiti, trapped between the US and France, will be able to regain its sovereignty after two decades of imperialists meddling in its affairs?

The Israeli military has released harrowing drone footage capturing this morning's massacre in southwest Gaza City, where at least 104 people have been killed and over 1,000 injured. The footage depicts hundreds of desperate Palestinians rushing towards aid trucks, escorted by Israeli tanks, while numerous lifeless bodies lay on the ground.
According to the UN, at least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip are just one step away from famine. Despite the dire situation, Israel persistently obstructs aid from reaching starving Palestinians, particularly the estimated 300,000 individuals in northern Gaza who are largely isolated from assistance.
The UN has cautioned that the humanitarian aid reaching Gaza City is insufficient to avert a famine. At least nine children have already died from dehydration and malnutrition, mainly in Gaza City.
One in six children under the age of 2 is acutely malnourished. With only six hospitals partially functioning, the situation remains dire.

Did you know that Chiang Kai-Shek, who shaped today's Taiwan, was responsible for the massacre of 30,000 communists in Taiwan? Just two years before China's Nationalist government fled to the island of Taiwan, it was defeated by the communists in mainland China. During this period, Nationalist troops brutally massacred up to 30,000 people in Taiwan in the name of anti-communism. These troops acted under the direct orders of Chiang Kai-Shek. He would go on to rule the island with an iron fist for several decades. The February 28 Massacre marked the beginning of decades of White Terror in Taiwan.

Violent protests have erupted in Haiti following Canada's pledge of $80 million for a multinational intervention to deploy foreign police forces in the country. The UN-backed police are expected to be provided mainly with 1,000 units from Kenya, although Kenya's high court recently ruled the mission unconstitutional.
The unrest is also directed at PM Ariel Henry, who enjoys backing from the United States and is determined to push through the international intervention despite widespread opposition. The US first proposed the intervention last August at the UN Security Council.
Haiti is grappling with the aftermath of numerous foreign interventions, which have profoundly destabilized society and exacerbated the scourge of gang violence. The situation has reached a critical point, with approximately 80% of Port-au-Prince now under gang control. An estimated 4,000 lives have been lost to gang violence, underscoring the urgent need for effective intervention and long-term solutions.

Today marks the start of the 2002 anti-Muslim pogroms in Gujarat, India, which led to the mass murder of almost 2,000 people. This episode of violence was not merely spontaneous or uncontrolled mob action; rather, it was methodically orchestrated, characterized by systematic targeting and violence against the Muslim community.
This pogrom was carried out under the guise of Hindu nationalist movements, with apparent complicity and endorsement from law enforcement and state apparatus, which were at the time under the administration of Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
This pogrom, and the collaboration between governmental authorities and radical groups, serves as one of the foundational elements of violence against Muslims in India today.

Millions of Yemenis took the streets for another monumental protest in solidarity with Gaza, possibly the largest ever seen. Under the banner, “You are not alone... We stand with Gaza,” Yemenis flooded the streets. Palestinian and Yemeni flags, as well as flags representing resistance movements, waved high, accompanied by banners denouncing Israel, the US, the UAE, and Jordan. Chants of “Our crowds are continuous, and our morals are high... Gaza is precious to us” echoed throughout the city.
Since October 7 and the start of Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, Yemenis have consistently marched in massive numbers every week. Despite the ongoing US-led bombing and aggression against Yemen, the Yemeni people have remained steadfast in their support for Gaza. Meanwhile, the international community and Arab countries have refrained from taking decisive action to end Israel’s extermination war on the enclave.

Violent clashes erupted in Greece's Thessaloniki on the first anniversary of the deadliest train crash in the country's history, resulting in the deaths of 57. Greece's protesters and unions have blamed years of austerity measures and privatization for the collapse of security standards and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.
Protesters confronted riot police with molotov cocktails on the sidelines of huge protests that erupted across the country. The scenes are reminiscent of the days of angry protests following the disaster, the largest that Greece's right-wing government has faced since its election in 2019.
At the same time, a 24-hour strike by public transport workers paralyzed the cities, demanding justice for their dead colleagues, safety improvements, and pay rises.
Protestors and relatives of the victims are still awaiting the outcome of a judicial investigation into the deadly collision. Investigators are not due to finish their probe until March 8.

Fascist salutes and slogans echoed through Rome as dozens attended a far-right memorial event for the fascist leader Mikis Mantakas, who communist militants ambushed during the “years of lead” in 1975.
The horrifying event occurred a month after Italy’s supreme court ruled against the criminalization of the infamous fascist salute, used by Italy’s fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, among others.
The display of hatred marked the second of its kind in a matter of weeks after hundreds of fascists commemorated another cadre of the far-right Italian Social Movement (MSI) party, the de facto successor party to Mussolini’s regime. Italy’s current PM, Giorgia Meloni, also took her first political steps in the MSI.
“The years of lead” from the 1960s to the late 1980s saw a violent power struggle period between communist and fascist groups.
The fascist commemorations were also attended by regional politicians and received support from leaders of the ruling far-right Brothers of Italy party.

Israeli occupation forces targeted civilians waiting for aid trucks on Al-Rashid Street, killing at least 77 people and injuring 250. Palestinians in Gaza, already suffering from months of starvation, faced further tragedy as Israeli forces continued to block UN aid deliveries.
While Israel allows a limited number of humanitarian aid trucks into the Gaza Strip, these are mostly directed to the southern regions. This allocation leaves the northern areas suffering under the Israeli siege. Consequently, residents in these areas have been forced to consume animal feed and leaves, desperately trying to survive.

Farmers from several European countries mobilized to Brussels, where violent clashes erupted with police forces as EU agriculture ministers discussed the Europe-wide agricultural crisis, sparking a continent-wide farmer uprising.
An estimated 900 protesters paralyzed the “European Quarter” where all major EU institutions in Belgium are based. Footage depicted burning barricades, water cannons, and protesters hurling stones at police.
The farmer protests across several nations revolve around issues such as state subsidies, low selling prices, escalating costs, bureaucratic hurdles, and concerns regarding an EU free trade agreement. Ministers are advocating for increased subsidies for farmers to quell the escalating unrest.
However, discussions regarding a higher subsidies budget clash with ongoing deliberations about the EU’s joint budget, particularly in light of soaring military expenditures following the Ukraine War.

Israeli warplanes targeted children playing at the Rafah-Egypt border. The Israeli fighter jet, flying at low altitude, fired flares which fell like balls of fire on the children and people in the area. The targeted area lies between displaced people's tents and the Egyptian border and serves as a playing space for the children.
In Rafah, where the majority of Gaza’s displaced population is staying, are more than 1.3 million people, including over 610,000 children. These children are trapped in an area less than a fifth of Gaza's total land mass, with nowhere left to flee as Israeli attacks on Rafah intensify.

Did you know that Eritrea became independent as late as 1991, making it one of the world's youngest countries? Today in Black History Month, we remember the driving force behind Eritrea's struggle for autonomy, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF).
The land on the Red Sea had been contested for centuries. During the Middle Ages, the territory that is now present-day Eritrea was part of the Abyssinian Empire.
In the mid-16th century, the Ottomans occupied what is now Eritrea. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, Italy colonized the region. However, Italy lost control of Eritrea to British forces during World War II. Despite a UN plan 1952 that aimed to facilitate Eritrean independence, Eritrea was once again taken into the Empire of Abyssinia as a province in 1960.
The EPLF emerged in 1973, ultimately achieving independence in 1991. 99.8% of Eritreans voted in favor of independence.

Argentina’s poverty crisis is worsening, driven by “anarcho-capitalist” President Javier Milei’s extreme privatization reforms. Thousands have taken to the streets nationwide, demanding food assistance amidst a raging inflation crisis, which soared to 254.2% in January, a staggering 50% increase since Milei assumed power.
Argentina’s 38,000 public kitchens for those in need received their last government-funded ration before Milei came to power and slashed the program. Milei campaigned in 2023 by frequently brandishing a chainsaw, pledging to slash the size of the state to unleash more unregulated capitalism.
The percentage of Argentinians plunged into poverty surged from 45% to nearly 60%, prompting concerns that Milei’s capitalist shock therapy would exacerbate the crisis and fuel social unrest across the nation.
