More than 100,000 people have taken to the streets against the rising popularity of the far-right in Europe. In addition to various protests in Germany, Austrians have joined in on the protests that have rocked Germany over the past weeks.

The protests largely come in response to a major secret far-right meeting in Germany, which, among others, leading figures of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and infamous Austrian fascist and former spokesperson of the Identitarian movement Martin Sellner attended. The meeting’s theme was the pursuit of a “remigration” policy, whereby millions of people with a migration background, including German citizens, would be deported.

At least 569 Rohingya refugees were reported dead or missing at sea last year, the highest number in nine years, a UN report revealed. One Rohingya was reported to have died or gone missing for every eight attempting to flee persecution via the sea, making the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal one of the deadliest stretches of water in the world, the UN added.

Recent years have seen a steady increase in Rohingya refugees from mainly Bangladesh and their native Myanmar embarking on sea journeys in search of safe refuge. Last year, a total of 4,491 Rohingya fled those countries in 2023 after 2022 has already seen a 360% increase compared to 2021.

With the rise of anti-Rohingya sentiment across South and Southeast Asia, the persecuted majority Muslim ethnic group from Myanmar, often described as the most persecuted minority in the world, has been fleeing crowded refugee camps and rising discrimination in Bangladesh, where nearly one million Rohingya refugees reside. Simultaneously, with heavy fighting having erupted again in their native Rakhine State of Myanmar, many of the Rohingya that have stayed in the country after years of genocidal attacks at the hands of the Myanmar military are now attempting the dangerous escape on boats.

64% of Rohingya who have taken to the boats to seek safe refuge attempted to do so in Indonesia. In what is their most significant influx in eight years, more than 1,500 Rohingya refugees arrived on Indonesian shores throughout November and December last year. Previously, people there had welcomed the refugees. However, this time, villagers and the military pushed boats back out to sea, leaving the stateless Rohingya people with no safe place to be.

The conflict in Sudan has led to one of the fastest-unfolding crises globally, with over 7.4 million people displaced inside and outside the country since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, 2023. The number of people displaced in Sudan has increased by about 611,000 over the past month, mainly due to conflict-induced displacement from Aj Jazirah and other states. The expansion of fighting between the SAF and RSF into central and eastern Sudan—the country’s crop production regions—has driven a significant increase in humanitarian needs.

Many largely uncoordinated mediation efforts have failed to produce results, and other states have taken sides in the war. Many groups have also joined the fighting, breaking a ceasefire in southwestern Sudan. The conflict risks destabilizing the fragile peace in neighboring countries.

Today marks 16 years since the death of George Habash, founder of the Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Habash rejected a two-state solution and advocated a Palestinian state in which all Muslims, Jews, and Christians would live together. George Habash believed that guerilla warfare was the only way to achieve Palestinian liberation. Under his leadership, the PFLP carried out several plane hijackings, which brought international attention to the Palestinian cause. Here is his story.

India is celebrating Republic Day, marking the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950, following the defeat of British colonialism.

The British Empire killed an estimated 165 million Indians during less than half of its almost 100-year occupation of India and looted at least $45 trillion of the country's wealth. The despised colonizers faced constant uprisings, which were nearly impossible to crush once and for all. Even with tens of thousands of British troops deployed, millions of Indians from different religions and castes united in their commitment to achieve liberation. Wherever the British turned, they faced hostility. This drove them to such levels of paranoia that they even saw the Chapati, now a staple of the British diet, as a threat.

Today, we’ll hear from the ICJ about South Africa’s genocide case against Israel. Whatever the outcome, the court cannot force Israel to stop its brutal war on Gaza. More than that, the responsibility lies with the main allies of Israel who allow Israel to commit such a crime.

Why? Israel’s Western allies, above all the US, will veto any possible action at the UN Security Council. The same Western countries talk about “Responsibility to Protect” and “Humanitarian Intervention” to justify their wars. Now, they’ll make a mockery of that discourse as they prevent any action to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Supporters of Evo Morales enter day four of their protests against President Luis Arce and his government's attempts to ban Evo Morales from standing in next year's elections.

Rural campesino groups are blocking highways, and their main demand is the resignation of the country's judicial authorities, who they say are being used by the government to ban Morales. Judicial elections were supposed to be held now, but the magistrates have extended their own mandate with the government's support.

On Monday, roadblocks cut off highways in Cochabamba and Oruro. However, pro-Evo protesters have now erected barricades, cutting off highways in every single region except La Paz. The La Paz bus terminal has confirmed that there is no travel by land to any other region of the country.

The internal split within the MAS, between Evo Morales and Luis Arce, has been rumbling on for over a year but has now spilled out onto the streets as the two leaders battle it out to see who will be the presidential candidate for the MAS in 2025.

Luis Arce supporters accuse Morales of destabilizing the government to regain power for himself. Meanwhile, Morales supporters accuse the government of shifting to the right and betraying the socialist principles of the MAS.

Argentina is experiencing its biggest general strike in decades. Organized by the country’s largest union, the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), the strike has seen tens of thousands of workers participate in Buenos Aires, with more joining across the country.

Protesters are opposing the economic austerity measures and reforms introduced by new libertarian President Javier Milei. These reforms, focused on spending cuts and privatization, have faced significant opposition since Milei took office. The strike has impacted various sectors, including transportation, banking, healthcare, and public services, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of flights. This protest poses a major challenge to Milei’s government, which has been in power for just over a month. The CGT and other unions have criticized the government’s labor reforms as harmful to workers' rights.

This strike occurs as Argentina struggles with a significant fiscal deficit and a poverty rate above 40%. The government argues that the austerity measures are essential after years of overspending, which have left the country with considerable debts to both local and international creditors, including a $44 billion agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Argentina's general strike against Javier Milei's austerity package gets underway today. The strike brings together all of the largest union federations in both the public and private sectors. These include the CGT, CTA, and the CTA-Autónomo.

This strike occurs just 45 days after 'libertarian' Javier Milei took office, setting a new record. It surpasses that of right-wing President Fernando de La Rua, who faced a general strike three months into his tenure in 1999.

Workers are mobilizing against Milei's 'shock therapy' austerity package that will slash social spending as well as subsidies for food and public transport. Argentina's highly organized workers unions will test their strength today in the face of possible repression announced by Interior Minister Patricia Bullrich, who has suggested that unions will be forced to pay for the cost of policing and could face prosecution if protests block public roads today.

The economic situation of the country has deteriorated ever since Milei took power in early December. Annual inflation has reached 211%, up from 160% in November. If the austerity package is approved in Congress, workers fear that basic goods will be out of reach for most of the population.

Did you know that Cuba's national hero isn't Fidel Castro but a 19th-century radical? Cuban freedom fighter and revolutionary José Martí was born on this day in 1853. Martí was known as “the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution,” and fought for Cuban independence from Spanish colonialism. His legacy has inspired revolutionaries across Latin America.

Through his writings and political action he advocated for a united and independent Cuba and as a result was deported from his homeland by the Spanish imperialists. In exile Martí traveled in Latin America, the United States, and Spain, raising awareness of the Cuban struggle for freedom from colonialism.

Martí was also a renowned Latin American intellectual and he foresaw the threat that U.S. imperialism represented for the continent’s independence.

Martí was also the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and he played a key role in uniting the Cuban people and sparking the independence war against Spain. He was killed on the battlefield during the Battle of Dos Ríos on May 19, 1895, against the hated Spanish imperialists.

Greece's student movement is rallying against the privatization of higher education, a policy advocated by the conservative Mitsotakis government, which aims to legalize private universities in the country, which would exclude parts of the society from accessing education.

Protesters express concern that the introduction of private universities, coupled with funding cuts for public universities, could lead to the wholesale privatization of the entire sector. Funding for public universities has been slashed by more than half since the onset of the austerity regime following the Eurozone crisis over a decade ago.

Marching through the city center under the slogan "education is not for sale," a significant number of participants also displayed banners in support of Palestine.

Greece currently has 24 public universities, but many face the prospect of closure due to funding cuts, making it challenging for them to compete with private institutions supported by significant corporate interests.

“No place is safe in Gaza” – In a matter of days, tens of thousands of Gazans evacuated the city of Khan Younis as Israeli tanks pushed toward the city center, flooding every street while besieging hospitals and preventing ambulances from responding to emergency calls. Tens of thousands rallied across Australia on Invasion Day – how Indigenous people refer to Australia Day. Protesters are calling for the date of Australia Day to be changed or for the public holiday to be abolished entirely as large crowds gathered in every major Australian city to protest Australia’s lasting British colonial legacy.

Australia Day marks the arrival of the British First Fleet, which landed on the continent’s shores in 1788. For Australia’s Aboriginal population, this day marks the start of a brutal period of genocide and forced expulsion from their land, which they have occupied for millennia.

Since at least 1938, January 26 has also been a day of protest and mourning against the start of British colonization as the country’s Aboriginal population continues to face widespread discrimination and negligence at the hands of the state.

Argentina’s possibly biggest general strike in decades brought the South American country to a halt as its largest union confederations mobilized against “libertarian” President Javier Milei’s extreme austerity package.

Over a million people across the country flooded the streets in the first general strike against Milei, a taste of what’s to come if Milei pushes ahead with his more radical policies. These policies include the privatization of state companies, the destruction of workers’ rights, and the end of all funding for infrastructure projects — a crucial source of jobs and development for the country.

Under the slogan “Our country is not for sale,” a giant march in the capital, Buenos Aires, reached Congress in striking defiance of threats of repression from the far-right Interior Minister, Patricia Bullrich. The police could not enforce the Minister's threats due to the massive size of the mobilization and were forced to watch as workers rallied in central Buenos Aires and across the country in huge numbers.

“There is no place to go. The city of Rafah is full.” – Palestinian families are fleeing Israel’s bombardment as Israeli occupation forces advance in the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The city was previously designated as a “safe zone” by the Israeli military. However, since October 7, no safe place remains in Gaza. People fleeing Khan Younis are heading to the border city of Rafah, the last place left in Gaza that Israeli soldiers have not set foot in so far.

Around one million internally displaced Gazans, almost half of the enclave’s population, reside in Rafah now, raising the city’s population to five times more than previously. At least 268,000 people live in public squares and make-shift tents on the streets. The absence of essential services and infrastructure led to the spread of diseases such as cholera, gastroenteritis, and Hepatitis. The infectious diseases are expected to deplete the hospitals that are already collapsing after 109 days of war.

29 years ago today, former Manchester United striker Eric Cantona kung-fu kicked racism out of football.

Cantona launched at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons who had been racially abusing him for being a “foreigner” at Selhurst Park Stadium. Cantona’s grandfather was from Barcelona, and was seriously injured fighting the armies of fascist General Francisco Franco in 1938.

It is reported that Simmons had a history of Nazi sympathies, attending far-right British National Party and National Front rallies, and attacking a Sri Lankan-born man in a violent robbery in 1992.

Simmons reportedly ran down 11 rows in the stand and heralded xenophobic insults at Cantona, who in response raced towards Simmons, climbed up the fence and gave him a kung-fu kick.

Cantona received a 9-month ban, was stripped of the captaincy of the French national team, fined £10,800, and penalized with two weeks of community service. “I have one regret,” Cantona said in an interview last year. “I would have loved to have kicked him even harder.”
