“Agony. The word “torture” is little.” – a survivor of Israeli captivity told red. Media. Many more have shared horrifying testimonies of their time in captivity, marked by severe physical and psychological abuse.
The UN and several human rights organizations have confirmed that Israeli forces are carrying out field executions against civilians in Gaza after forcibly removing them from displacement centers and stripping them.
In past weeks, there have been countless reports, photos, and videos showing Israel’s inhumane treatment of Palestinian prisoners across Gaza; Israeli forces are rounding up thousand of Palestinians, including children, stripping them to their underwear. Bound and blindfolded, they are then sent to undisclosed detention camps, where they spend days subjected to torture, hunger, and the cold.
Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners marks a clear violation of international law as humiliating and publishing humiliating images of prisoners is a violation of the Geneva Conventions, which states prisoners of war “shall at all times be humanely treated and protected, particularly against acts of violence, from insults and from public curiosity.”

The largest migrant caravan of 2023, known as the 'poverty exodus,' has recently departed from Southern Mexico, comprising approximately 10,000 individuals from 24 countries en route to the US border.
The caravan serves as both a migration movement and a protest against Mexican authorities. It has set off due to the frustration of thousands waiting at the Guatemala-Mexico border, seeking processing at the Tapachula checkpoint but receiving no response from Mexican border staff. Consequently, driven by desperation, the crowd has entered the country without official authorization.
Within this group, chants resonate, echoing demands for improved treatment in Mexico and underscoring their inability to access legal entry into the country. This predicament arises from heightened pressure from the United States, forcing Mexico to adopt stricter anti-migrant policies to impede the flow of refugees from Central America to the US.
President AMLO has obliged by blocking routes through Mexico.
However, he also highlights the significant role played by US sanctions against nations such as Cuba and Venezuela in propelling large-scale migration from the region. AMLO asserts that addressing these structural issues is imperative to mitigating the migration crisis, emphasizing that it will persist unless these root causes are effectively tackled.

red. Rewind 2023: Refugee Crisis Worldwide. 2023 has been marked by an escalating worldwide refugee crisis as tens of millions of people have been on the move fleeing political persecution, war, or poverty. According to the UN, more than 114 million people have been forced to leave their homes due to war and violence a figure that increased by 4 million from May to October. Nearly 90% of those who are forced to leave their homes come from low and middle-income countries. Here is a roundup of some of the worst refugee crises of 2023.
Following the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in April, at least 6 million people have been internally displaced while more than 1.2 million have fled the country. The war has also led to a humanitarian crisis that has affected 25 million people half of Sudan's population. A significant number of refugees have continued to attempt to enter the US through the border with Mexico with an estimated peak of 9,000 refugees apprehended by US officials daily. 132, 648 were apprehended in July a figure that rose to 181,059 in August. At the southwest border more than 2.4 million people have attempted to cross the border.
Israel's brutal bombardment of the Gaza Strip since October 7 has displaced 1.9 million people more than 85% of the population of the enclave according to the UN. Refugees in Gaza have been forced to stay in refugee camps, UN shelters, schools, or even outside sometimes washing in polluted seawater. 2023 has seen at least 2,500 refugees die or go missing when attempting to cross the Mediterranean.

"It's not just the French who are our problems. It's the whole of NATO." - said one Nigerien in response to the withdrawal of the last French soldiers from the country, bringing France's decade-long military operation in the Sahel to an end. In the wake of this year's coup in Niger, which toppled President Mohamed Bazoum, a close ally of France, coup authorities ordered the withdrawal of 1,500 French troops from the country.
After months of tension, massive protests outside the foreign military bases, and France's pushing their regional partners to launch a military invasion against Niger, Paris withdrew its last troops. Since the coup against Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, the West has been provoking an inter-African war by pushing ECOWAS and Western-aligned countries to intervene militarily in Niger. The US still operates two military bases with 1100 soldiers in Niger.

Mao Zedong, the co-founder of the Communist Party of China, was born 130 years ago today in Shaoshan. In 1949, after 28 years of revolutionary struggle, Mao founded the People’s Republic of China, bringing the Communist Party of China to power in an extraordinary moment in Chinese, 20th-century, and revolutionary history. Born into a peasant family in the 19th century, he rose to lead China, transforming it from a poverty-stricken feudal nation into a socialist society.
Mao and others were concerned that a revisionist elite led by Deng Xiaoping had emerged within the party, seeking to re-establish capitalism in China. In 1966, he launched the Cultural Revolution to combat this capitalist-bourgeois ideology. Mao also distinctly distanced himself from the revisionist direction the Soviet Union took following the death of Stalin.
Following Mao’s death in 1976, emerging bourgeois elements within the party executed a coup d’état and reinstated capitalism under the direction of Deng Xiaoping and his successors, who govern China today.
During his 27 years in power, Mao improved life expectancy and literacy rates and increased the number of doctors. He also drove imperialism out of China by establishing the People's Republic. Significant technological advances occurred during his leadership, including the launch of a satellite.

red. Rewind 2023: One of the most devastating earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at the beginning of this year, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5, killing over 60,000 people, including thousands of refugees. In total, 9.1 million people were and are affected by the earthquake disaster and 3 million people have been displaced.
While governments worldwide were quick to respond to Turkey’s requests for international assistance, deploying rescue teams and offering aid, the Syrians, already devastated by years of war, were largely denied international aid as sanctions by the EU, US, and other countries persisted. Syria’s current complex humanitarian emergency is among the largest humanitarian crises in the world, and the earthquake has only exacerbated the situation.

Indian soldiers tortured three Kashmiri men to death in the Indian-administrated territory of Kashmir. The three men were identified as Safeer Hussain, Mohammad Showkat, and Shabbir Ahmad, who were taken into custody by the Indian army.
The army had detained at least eight civilians for interrogation following an attack on two army vehicles in Poonch that left four Indian soldiers dead and three injured. The Indian military is widely perceived as an occupying force in Kashmir and Jammu.
The Indian soldiers film themselves torturing and abusing the detainees. The killings and the harrowing video sparked protests in Srinagar.
Earlier this month, India's Supreme Court revoked the autonomous status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a new escalation in the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP party's crackdown on India's only Muslim-majority region.

Did you know that 161 years today the US executed 38 Native Americans in the largest mass execution in its history? On 26 December 1862 38 Dakota nation members were hung in Mankato, Minnesota for their role in the US Dakota War. Two days after the Dakota had surrendered at Camp Release on 26 September a military commission began trying those accused of taking part in the war. 303 men were sentenced to death and 16 were sent to prison.
Although one prisoner received a last-minute reprieve the other 38 were hung in front of an estimated 4,000 spectators on a specially constructed scaffold and were left dangling on the scaffold for half an hour.
The Dakota War began in August 1862 when the Dakota, who were facing starvation and displacement confronted white settlers at the Lower Sioux Agency in south-west Minnesota. The attacks were provoked by efforts by white settlers to force the Dakota to cede their land and move to reservations. A crop failure in 1861 and a harsh winter had pushed the Dakota to the brink of starvation.

A continuing series of Turkish air strikes pounded northeast Syria, an area controlled by a Kurdish-led autonomous administration. Unmanned drones bombed infrastructure targets, resulting in at least 13 casualties, according to local reports.
The airstrikes were concentrated on critical sites, including oil refineries, a grain silo, cement plants, and a vital railroad station, significantly impacting the region's supply chain. Qamishli suffered ten additional airstrikes this morning. Protests erupted in the Qamishli and Raqqa regions, demanding an end to the bombardment.
The "Democratic Autonomous Administration" condemned the attacks by NATO's second-largest army, warning that the international response would leave the Turkish state without consequences. The current administration of NE Syria grew out of the Kurdish-led guerrilla forces and organizations that were leading the war against ISIS in the region.

Thousands attempted to storm the city hall of the Serbian capital, Belgrade, last night in protests against alleged "fraud" in the parliamentary and local elections a week ago. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested several people. The unrest marked the seventh consecutive day of protests.
The protests are aimed at the right-wing nationalist party of the current President, Aleksandar Vucic, which claimed victories during the snap elections. An international observer mission reported cases of violence, vote buying, and ballot boxes being stuffed with fake votes after the election.
Several members of parliament from opposition parties have gone on a hunger strike. In addition, inner-EU tension has arisen, with Vucic calling Germany's harsh criticism an "interference in the election process in Serbia."

We met children in Gaza to ask them what they wish for Christmas. The contrast with most of the world couldn’t be starker. “We are young children. All of us. We have the right to live like the children in the rest of the world.” – one girl told us.

This year, the many joyful rituals that characterize Christmas in Palestine are replaced by mourning and prayers, shedding a harsh light on the current reality.

Thousands swarmed the streets of Berlin for nationwide-mobilized protests in solidarity with Palestine. We were on the ground and asked the protesters for their perspective on the ongoing wave of police repression sweeping Berlin. Last week, the city was the scene of unprecedented raids and crackdowns on Palestinian activists.
"They are whitewashing their history by saying that they're supporting Israel," said one protest participant. Others told us about strict restrictions and absurd, discriminatory bans, such as not being allowed to wear the keffiyeh or even display the Palestinian flag. We also witnessed arrests of protest participants. The organization, an alliance of left-wing Palestine solidarity groups, expected a turnout of at least 5000 people.
