Early morning Israeli attacks in Gaza killed at least 20 Palestinians as they pounded central, southern, and northern Gaza. Two refugee camps, including Nuseirat and Maghazi, several locations across Khan Younis, Beit Lahiya City, and Gaza City have all been targeted since last night.

Israel’s relentless war on the Gaza Strip has officially killed at least 39,929, according to figures released by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. This amounts to 1.8% of Gaza’s population. 24% of those killed are said to be young people.

Since October 7, nearly every inch of the Gaza Strip has been targeted by the 70,000 bombs Israel has dropped on the enclave, a newly compiled map using UN satellite data has revealed.

For the fifth day, over 2,500 Sudanese refugees walk towards the border between Sudan and Ethiopia, where they fled to for safety months ago. Carrying their belongings, people are enduring harsh conditions as many are still suffering from wounds and injuries.

The refugees were sheltering in the Olala forest in Ethiopia but decided to go back due to the harsh conditions of humidity and wild animals. After 100 days, they are still without any solution from governments and international organizations. Around 6,000 refugees in total were sheltering in the forest.

Since the war in Sudan started in April 2023, over 17,000 people have been killed while millions of people have been forcibly displaced inside and outside the country. 16.4 million children alone are on the brink of starvation.

“Water yes! Mining no!” is the slogan of Indigenous protesters in Ayacucho, Peru who are calling for the expulsion of mining companies in the province of Huanta. Local communities say that mining operations are destroying the environment and poisoning the rivers that the region relies on for drinking water and agriculture.

Mining in Peru is entirely privatized, with the government handing out the country’s natural resources to Peruvian and foreign multinational companies without consulting the affected communities.

Illegal mining by corporate-backed criminal groups, particularly in the Amazon, also has a devastating effect on the environment. 22 major rivers in the Peruvian Amazon have been contaminated by gold mining operations.

Capitalism’s climate crisis is destroying the world’s forests, from the Pantanal to the Mediterranean. July and August has seen devastating wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest, with the worst affected areas right now in southern Europe and the Amazon basin.

Many media outlets downplay the destruction as “seasonal” and imply that the fires are inevitable. However, a study from World Weather Attribution shows that this year’s fires in the Pantanal region of Brazil was made four times more likely and 40% more intense due to man-made climate disruption.

In Europe, wildfires last year were among the worst in over a century, said a European Commission report. This summer is set to cause witness even more devastation, as wildfire season is starting earlier and lasting longer than ever before.

Irish Republican youth clashed with the police, throwing petrol bombs and shooting fireworks in Northern Ireland’s city of Derry. The clashes erupted after the annual Apprentice Boys of Derry parade, which is held by loyalist groups who oppose Irish independence.

The clashes lasted several hours during which large police forces and a dog unit were deployed. Police announced that 10 officers were injured during the clashes.

The parade is held on the second Saturday in August each year to commemorate the ending of the 105-day-long siege that the city was under in August 1689. The majority of parades are held by either Ulster Protestant, unionist, or Ulster loyalist groups.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are being forced on a death march as Israel issued yet another mass displacement order over the weekend. The latest order once again applies to several areas of the city of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and is just one in a series of mass displacement orders throughout the current genocide.

The area that the new displacement order covers is said to be one of the largest in the 10-month-old invasion of the enclave and even includes part of an Israeli-declared “humanitarian zone.”

The order came a day after an Israeli air strike on al-Tabin School in northern Gaza’s Gaza City killed more than 100 Palestinians sheltering there. Despite being met with international condemnation for the latest massacre, Israel presses on with its devastating ground operations, including in Khan Younis.

The Black population of Los Angeles, California erupted in fury in six days of unrest today in August 1965, known as the Watts Riots. The unrest occurred during the tense period of the Civil Rights movement where the racist Jim Crow laws of the southern US states were being challenged by activists. However, in Los Angeles the context was slightly different and the causes of the unrest were more long-term.

During the Second Great Migration in the 1940s, the Black population of Los Angeles increased due to defense industry recruitment efforts. As a result, the Black population increased from 63,700 in 1940 to 350,000 in 1965.

However, the white bourgeoisie did not welcome the Black migration. Many covenants prevented minorities, including Black people, from owning property in certain areas of the city. At the same time, the Los Angeles Police Department was gaining a reputation for racist violence. It was these events that created a pressure cooker that exploded in August 1965.

On this day in 1961, the US started spraying Agent Orange in a campaign called “Operation Ranch Hand,” which would last 10 years. The program entailed the spraying of 19 million gallons of defoliants and herbicides over rural South Vietnam. Its alleged aim was to deny the Vietcong access to food and concealment provided by vegetation. In reality, it was to punish and deprive the Vietnamese people for their resistance.

Roughly 20% of South Vietnam's jungles were sprayed at one point, and areas in Cambodia and Laos were also affected. The US Air Force conducted over 20,000 sorties from 1961 to the program's conclusion in 1971.

The Vietnamese government estimates that approximately 4.8 million people were exposed to Agent Orange, leading to 400,000 deaths from cancers and other conditions. Three million Vietnamese experienced health complications due to the program and 150,000 children were born with serious birth defects.

Few individuals in German history have struggled against militarism and war as much as the pioneering communist Karl Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871. His notable quote, “The main enemy is within our own country,” resonates across time and remains pertinent even today.

Amid WWI, Liebknecht and his close comrade Rosa Luxemburg organized a mass rebellion of German workers and soldiers. During the November Revolution of 1918-1919, the communist faction attempted to deal a fatal blow to the crumbling German monarchy but failed in the power struggle against the Social Democrats who allied with fascist forces.

The radical lawyer fought for working-class people in court, laid the theoretical foundation for the anti-militarist struggle, and co-founded several communist organizations, including the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht and Luxemburg were murdered in 1919 by fascist paramilitaries, for which the KPD holds the Social Democrats partly responsible.

The German army “Bundeswehr” wants to honor Nazi soldiers as official “role models.” During a government press conference, the Defense Ministry’s spokesperson defended the decision while using inconsistent criteria to determine which former Wehrmacht soldiers, including SS fascists and Nazi party members, should contribute to the Bundeswehr’s “understanding of tradition.”

This decision was formalized in the military’s “Tradition Decree,” an official document meant to serve as a “moral compass” for the Bundeswehr. When the Bundeswehr was established in 1955, around 40,000 former Nazi Wehrmacht officers and junior officers formed its core.

The MOD justified the decision by citing the process of “denazification,” the post-war effort to pseudo-purge Nazi ideology from the German state and society. Even prominent Nazis within the Wehrmacht, such as fighter pilot Erich Hartmann, who directly killed at least 352 people, were allowed to rejoin the Bundeswehr in 1956.

Hundreds of Israeli settlers have descended upon the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem. Under the tight protection of Israeli occupation forces and joined by fascist Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the settlers were seen assaulting Palestinian residents and provocatively performing Talmudic rituals.

The storming of third holiest site in Islam comes as Jews observe the Jewish holy day of Tisha B’Av today, commemorating the destruction of the old temples.

Despite a Jordanian-Israeli agreement that prohibits Jews from praying at the mosque compound, Jewish settlers regularly breach this accord, violently storming the mosque’s grounds under the protection of heavily-armed security forces.

Ironically, Muslims are the ones often barred from praying at the mosque. Just last week, Israeli police issued a six-month ban on Sheikh Ekrema Sabri, the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s Imam. The ban stops him from entering the mosque compound and its surrounding courtyards.

Far-right Hindutva mobs have attacked alleged Muslims in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, destroying their makeshift shelters and reportedly setting them on fire. The attackers, who accused the victims of being Bangladeshis, are being supported by Hindutva agitators who are exploiting recent unrest in Bangladesh to stoke anti-Muslim sentiments.

Shortly after Sheikh Hasina’s removal from power in Bangladesh due to a student-led mass uprising, some Indian media outlets began reporting that Hindu minorities in Bangladesh were being targeted by “Islamist forces.” While there have been isolated deadly attacks against Hindus, Indian media has been spreading widespread alarmist misinformation about the situation. This misinformation is now escalating anti-Muslim violence across India.

Similar racist attacks have erupted in several parts of the country. Hate crimes against Muslims have surged since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office for a third term.

Did you know Palestinian liberation groups had to once defend themselves against a 50-day siege by Lebanese fascists on their refugee camp in Tel Al-Zaatar? The horrific massacre that followed ended on this day 48 years ago.

The massacre was the first of its kind to be committed directly against Palestinian refugees residing in Lebanon and is an example of the grim underlying foundations of the civil war that began in 1975. The Phalangists became one of Israel’s most trusted allies in the Lebanese Civil War.

The most notorious Christian paramilitary group operating during the civil war was the “Phalangists,” known in Lebanon as “Hizb Al-Kataeb.” Politically and organization-wise, the Phalangist movement was modeled on the Spanish Falange and the Italian Fascist movements and espoused many of their ideas. A historic protest of over 100,000 people was held in Belgrade, Serbia against an EU-sponsored lithium mine. Protesters marched through downtown and blockaded the city’s main train station as well as a major bridge. Three prominent activists were arrested and sentenced to jail terms of up to 40 days.

Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić has claimed the protests are part of a coup against him, which the West is tacitly supporting. However, Western countries like Germany have been the ones pushing for the lithium mine, which these protesters are opposing.

In 2022, after a mass upsurge, the government was forced to cancel the project. The movement called attention to the mine’s devastating environmental impacts and dispossession of over 20 villages. The protests have united the left and right across the country, who are both opposing foreign plundering of the country.

Anti-fascist demonstrations took place in numerous towns and cities of the UK and Ireland as the violent pogroms of the far-right begin to subside.

Following clashes and counter-protests last week, mobilizations from the far-right have mostly fizzled out and prison sentences have been handed to many of those involved.

The violence broke out two weeks ago after rumors spread that a Muslim immigrant had committed a stabbing attack on young children. Subsequently, the far-right rioted and launched arson attacks on immigrant-owned shops and at hotels where refugees were being temporarily housed.

Today marks the anniversary of the first genocide in the history of the 20th century, the blood of which is on the hands of the German colonialists in Namibia. From 1884 to 1915, the German Reich ruled over what is now Namibia, brutally suppressing local uprisings.

The Herero and Nama War from 1904 to 1908 saw mass killings, with historians estimating that 65,000 out of 80,000 Herero and at least 10,000 out of 20,000 Nama were killed in retaliation for their anti-colonial resistance.

Even today, the legacy of this violence lingers. Seventy percent of Namibia's farmland remains in the hands of the descendants of German settlers, while the destruction of Herero and Nama culture has led to widespread poverty among their communities.

Twitter/X is now banned in Venezuela for the next 10 days on orders of President Nicolás Maduro, who accuses Elon Musk of promoting violence and fascism in the country.

The ban took effect late last night and was announced at a mass rally held by Chavistas in support of Maduro and in rejection of a US-backed coup. The government has condemned social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp and Twitter, for promoting fake news about the recent elections and inciting violent pro-coup protests.

Opposition mobilizations have fizzled after the government arrested over 2,000 people this past week for their involvement in violent acts since the July 28th elections. Opposition candidate Maria Corina Machado now uses her social media platforms to call on the military to lead a coup.
