“Homeland or Death!” are the famous words communist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara said at the UN General Assembly on this day in 1964. In his speech, Che denounced US interventions worldwide and called for resistance against imperialism.

More than five decades later, Che’s words remain as relevant as ever, as the Palestinian people continue their unwavering resistance against the Israeli occupation, acting on behalf of US imperialism in the Middle East.

During his first visit to Gaza in 1959 Che told Palestinian refugees that they must continue their struggle to liberate their homeland. Resisting the occupation was the only way, he said. Che admitted that their case was “complex” because the new Jewish settlers occupied their homes. “The right must eventually be restored,” he affirmed.

As COP28 is coming to an end and representatives from rich countries from the Global North have refused to make any meaningful change to help the Global South deal with the climate crisis, listen to Nelson Mandela's granddaughter describe the situation as "climate apartheid".

Ndileka Mandela added that "the global north is using their economic and legal power to subjugate poor nations, who at the brunt of the effects of climate change." However, she also added that her grandfather would have wanted COP28 to succeed and that his struggle continues today in the fight for climate justice.

The COP 28 summit in Dubai appears to be heading towards abject failure as the draft agreement failed to include a commitment for countries to phase out fossil fuels under pressure from oil-rich nations such as Saudi Arabia and Russia. Climate activists and representatives from Global South nations in the front line of climate breakdown have strongly criticized the draft agreement. The Marshall Islands Minister of Natural Resources John M. Silk said "We did not come here to sign our death warrant" adding " We will not go silently to our watery graves."

Today is the 42nd anniversary of the start of one of the worst massacres in modern Latin American history, the El Mozote massacre perpetrated by US-trained forces in El Salvador. From December 11 to December 13 1981 a right-wing death squad slaughtered almost the entire population of the village of El Mozote. Over 1,000 people mostly women, children, and elderly people were brutally murdered.

Girls as young as 10 were raped while children were murdered by having their throats slit and being hung from trees. After slaughtering almost the entire population, the death squad burnt the houses in the village.

During the early 1980s, El Salvador was convulsed by a civil war between left-wing guerrillas known as the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) and a pro-American military dictatorship. The population of El Mozote were considered FMLN sympathizers and the village became a haunting symbol of the US support for brutal massacres against left-wing movements across Latin America. Thousands protested against new ECOWAS sanctions in Niger that are devastating the country's food supply chain. The regional Western-backed ECOWAS alliance previously threatened to launch a military invasion of Niger, one of the world's poorest countries, following a coup in July.

The humanitarian situation in the country is deteriorating, according to the UN, with UNICEF stating that 2.3 million people are food insecure. The sanctions have restricted Niger's access to banking services and hindered trade with neighboring countries.

Other countries, including the US, have cut off aid after the fall of the previous pro-western government. Foreign aid accounted for almost half of Niger's annual budget. The sanctions have cut off over 70% of Niger's electricity supplies from Nigeria.

Britain colonized Kenya in 1895, first as the East Africa Protectorate and then in 1920 as a British Crown Colony. By the 1950s, white settlers had stolen over 7.5 million acres. As a response, the Mau Mau, a guerrilla army, was fighting back.

Led by Dedan Kimathi, the charismatic revolutionary leader of the man mau. Feared by the British, who ultimately captured and killed him. And have refused to reveal where they buried him, even today.

In the red. documentary “Echoes of Empire: British Neocolonialism in Kenya,” we talk to Kimathi’s family and fighters – those who know his stories best, for a unique insight into a revolutionary leader – and movement – that fought and beat British colonialism.

With Israel’s relentless war against Gaza entering its third month, their friends in Sudan are also committing genocide. Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been massacring the non-Arab Masalit tribe in the Darfur region.

Their most recent atrocity which has been described by some as the worst since the civil war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary RSF erupted in April, involved the RSF killing at least 1,300 people in a matter of days. The RSF aims to ethnically cleanse the region of its non-Arab Black population, lashing out against the local population, which has been protesting both the RSF and the Arab-dominated government.

In a bizarre comparison, the RSF likened its battle with Sudan’s military to the attacks on Israel from “terrorist groups such as Hamas.” Fighting between the two has escalated ever since the relations between the former allies became hostile back in April.

Protests against the privatization of water in Sao Paulo were violently attacked by the state military police under the control of the Bolsonarista governor, Tarcísio de Freitas.

Yesterday, the Sao Paulo state legislature voted to privatize the regional water company Sabesp. The workers' union at Sabesp and other activists filled out the public gallery at the legislature to protest against any sale. As they began their protest, the state military police violently repressed the crowd and made numerous arrests.

Freitas also provoked strikes just a few weeks ago over his plans to privatize the city's remaining public transport services. He has already privatized the city's electric company, which unions say has been a disaster and led to city-wide blackouts due to the mass layoffs enforced by the private company Enel, which recently took over the service.

Journalists and activists in Gaza have called for a Global general strike to demand an immediate ceasefire as Israel continues its relentless war on Gaza. They asked people not to go to work, school, or university.

Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank have responded. The strike spread throughout cities in the West Bank today, paralyzing all aspects of life, including public transportation, while universities, banks, and shops were closed. The National and Islamic Forces, a coalition of major Palestinian factions, also called for the occupation to be confronted on the streets and at checkpoints across the West Bank.

Since 1936, during the British mandate over Palestine, general strikes became a tool of struggle for the Palestinian people, which was strengthened under the Israeli occupation to express anger to win rights as well as causing economic damage to the occupation power.

Black activist, journalist, and former Black Panther Party member Mumia Abu-Jamal received a death sentence in the US 41 years ago. After spending three decades on death row, a global solidarity movement successfully persuaded US authorities to commute his sentence to life imprisonment in 2011.

Mumia honed his skills as a revolutionary journalist during his time as a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Panther Party. Renowned for viewing journalism as a potent political tool for developing a mass movement, he wrote extensively against capitalism, war, racism, and poverty.

International human rights organizations vehemently opposed the sentence, citing concerns about police abuse and corruption. One report concluded that "the proceedings used to convict and sentence Abu-Jamal to death were in violation of minimum international standards that govern fair trial procedures."

It has been 1 year since the coup against Pedro Castillo in Peru. The US-backed dictatorship that replaced him launched numerous massacres against Indigenous protesters who were calling for the return of democracy.

Throughout 2022, right-wing pro-Fujimori parties in congress were preparing to launch a legislative coup against President Castillo. In order to prevent this, on December 7th that year, Castillo announced new congressional elections and thereby suspending the existing congress until the new one was elected.

In response, congress voted to impeach Castillo in an illegal session. The police and military, institutions shaped by the Fujimori dictatorship, sided with congress over the President and proceeded to arrest Pedro Castillo. This cleared the way for congress to install Dina Boluarte as President without a general election.

Immediately, social movements, primarily in rural indigenous regions, began protesting against the coup. These protests escalated into a general strike in which most of the key highways across the country were blocked by protesters erecting barricades.

In response, the new Boluarte regime declared a state of emergency and gave the police and military the green light to use live ammunition to clear roads and break up the protests. This is when the massacres across Quechua and Aymara regions began.
