Did you know that FIFA once tried to force the Soviet national football team to play a World Cup play-off match in a blood-soaked concentration camp? Fifty years ago today the second leg of the play-off for a place in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany was due to be held between Chile and the Soviet Union.
However, following a 0-0 draw in Moscow the second leg was due to be played at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago where thousands of socialists and communists had been tortured and executed following a fascist coup two months before. The Soviets refused to play in the stadium and what followed was one of the most bizarre football matches ever. Read on.

Israeli forces targeted and killed Al Mayadeen correspondent Farah Omar and cameraman Rabih al-Maamari in southern Lebanon in yet another deliberate attack on journalists. The two journalists were reporting on Israel’s latest cross-border bombardment when an Israeli airstrike hit them after they had just finished a live broadcast.
Earlier this month, the Israeli war cabinet approved regulations to ban and shut down the Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen Media Network as part of Israel’s war on communications and media coverage of its war crimes,
Israeli aggression has killed 45 Palestinian and three Lebanese journalists since October 7, with many more injured and suffering from multiple assaults, threats, cyberattacks, censorship, and the killing of family members. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), this has been the deadliest period for journalists covering a conflict since the CPJ began documenting journalist fatalities in 1992.

Today is World Children's Day, which marks the day in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. On 20 November 1989 the UN also adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, today the position of many children worldwide is not a reason to celebrate.
According to UNICEF, an estimated 333 million children live in extreme poverty while 1 billion are "multidimensionally" poor meaning that they lack necessities such as nutritious food or clean water.

EXCLUSIVE: Israeli soldiers targeted fleeing Palestinian refugees capturing and blindfolding some of them while tanks patrolled the crowds. The disturbing images were captured by red. Media reporters on the Salah al-Din road in the northern Gaza Strip.
Israel’s ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip has so far led to the displacement of almost 1.7 million Gazans. Despite Israel’s announcement that they are going to set up “safe corridors” for evacuation, Palestinians describe the reality in Salah al-Din Street as horrific, saying death is omnipresent. Mahmoud al-Madhoun, a witness, remarked: “We saw death in all colors on Salah al-Din Street.”
For weeks, the Israeli military has been urging Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip to move south. The reality, however, is that they continue to be attacked and bombed as they flee.

The Haditha massacre led to enquiries into the US military's role, their accountability, and the ethical considerations that are important during wars.

Did you know that the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was the first country in the world to allow abortion on demand? 103 years ago today the Commissioners of Justice and Public Health signed an edict legalizing abortion on medical and social grounds. The law was passed in an attempt to combat the growing number of illegal abortions which often led to women having complications and dying. At the time, 50 % of women who had illegal abortions were infected and 4% died.
However, the Bolshevik government did make it clear that it would like to eventually see abortion even performed legally disappear following the support it had introduced for working mothers that made it easier for them to balance child care and employment. They admitted however that due to the survival of some reactionary attitudes from the pre-revolutionary era and the difficult economic situation, it was necessary to legalize abortion to protect women's health. red. Media was on the ground as militant students from the FARC guerrilla-linked organization Bolivarian Movement confronted police forces at the university in Bogotá, Colombia. Footage shows the hooded students parading on the campus and attacking riot police with improvised explosives.
The collapse of negotiations between the government under President Gustavo Petro and the FARC faction Central Staff triggered the protest. The FARC-EP EMC criticized the state's long, unprecedented military offensive in the Cauca region and violations of agreements.
According to local reports, the Bolivarian Movement's action was also aimed at breaking the narrative that the FARC is only present in rural regions, not in urban areas. The faction broke away from the main structure before signing the peace agreement in 2016 and grew to over 3,200 fighters by 2023, organized on at least 21 fronts in Colombia.

70 years ago today on 18 November 1953 the British Royal Air Force (RAF) started a brutal bombing campaign in colonial Kenya to crush the anti-colonial Mau Mau uprising. A total of 6 million bombs were dropped in what was known as Operation Mushroom. Attacks were initially aimed at forests where it was believed many Mau Mau fighters were hiding. Although the attacks were fairly haphazard the operation did drive a large number of Mau Mau fighters out of the forests.
Following this, the British built what they called "protection villages" to detain Kenyans they suspected of being Mau Mau fighters. Conditions were brutal and inhumane reflecting the barbaric nature of British colonialism. Although these brutal murderous tactics eventually led to the British declaring victory in October 1956 following the capture of Mau Mau Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi they could not hold back the tide of anti-colonialism and Kenya won its independence in 1960. Does Israel have the right to self-defense? No, says UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, arguing that an occupying entity has no legal right to "self-defense" against the occupied entity, in this case, Gaza.
"Israel is invoking a non-existent right to self-defense under the UN Charter. Israel has begun a relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip, which [...] has killed over 11 thousand people - 4,506 of them children," Albanese added.
