red. media spoke with students in Istanbul about the unprecedented anti-government protests currently shaking Türkiye. Universities have become hotspots of unrest, with students and some professors shutting down multiple institutions across the country.

The protests were sparked by the arrest of Erdoğan's top political rival, CHP’s Ekrem İmamoğlu, but have since morphed into a broader movement beyond party lines. At universities, calls for deep reforms to the country's broken, underfunded education system are growing louder.

Videos went viral showing Turkish riot police attempting to quash protests on several campuses by using overwhelming force. Meanwhile, students repeatedly fought to break through barricades, defying the crackdown.

“We will continue reporting in honor of our people and in honor of the blood of our colleagues Hossam Shabat and Mohammed Mansour.” Palestinian journalists in Gaza held a protest to ask for international protection and reaffirm that they are not a target.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed at least 208 journalists and media workers. Journalists have reportedly been threatened by the Israeli army with death, along with their families. Hossam Shabat was placed on a hit list by the Israeli army. At the time, he said he felt “hunted” and called on people to speak out using the hashtag #ProtectTheJournalists.

A Palestinian freed prisoner and resistance fighter clashed with the Israeli army for hours before being killed in Qalqilya, occupied Palestine.

Bara' Miskawi, 20, was wanted by the Israeli army. Last year, he was released after serving a 20-month sentence. Yesterday night, he fought alone against the Israeli army in the heavily monitored West Bank, currently under one of the largest Israeli military campaigns, shouting messages of solidarity with Gaza.

Bara' wrote the words said by Sinwar, former leader of Hamas, before being killed in Gaza: “And the red freedom has a door, struck by every bloodied hand." This line, part of a 1926 poem, honors the struggle for a nation's freedom during colonial times.

After his death, his body was taken by the Israeli army, a practice to inflict further pain on Palestinian families. Without considering the bodies in Gaza due to the lack of data, Israel is holding over 641 Palestinian bodies in its “Cemeteries of Numbers.”

“Only children are dying”. Israel’s ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip continues to raise the death toll, which has officially surpassed 50,144 killed. This figure does not include those still trapped under rubble or vaporized by heavy bombardments.

More than 270 children have been killed in the seven days since Israel resumed its war on Gaza on March 18. Save the Children has called Israel’s resumption of the war “a death sentence for Gaza’s children.” According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, more than 17,900 children have been killed since October 2023.

This morning, Israel expanded displacement orders to tens of thousands of residents in all of Gaza’s northern border towns. Meanwhile, a team from the Palestine Red Crescent Society has been missing for the third consecutive day after being besieged by Israeli tanks during a rescue mission in Rafah.

Anger is boiling over in Indonesia as students and activists refuse to back down. On Monday, clashes erupted in Surabaya, where around 1,000 demonstrators dressed in black confronted police with rocks and Molotov cocktails. The protest was part of a growing nationwide movement against a new law expanding the military’s role in civilian government. After days of harsh police crackdowns that left many injured, tensions have escalated on both sides. Protesters held signs like “Reject the Military Law” and “Capitalism is incompatible with Gen-Z.”

Meanwhile, threats against critical media have intensified. Tempo magazine, known for its reporting on President Prabowo, received a box of decapitated rats and an animal’s head at its Jakarta office. Activists warn these acts are part of a broader attempt to silence dissent—on the streets and in the press.

Turkish police have arrested more than 1,133 people, including nine journalists, amid ongoing anti-government protests. Now in their fifth day, the unrest is the largest the country has seen in over a decade.

At the same time, Turkish authorities are pressuring the social media platform X to block several hundred accounts allegedly linked to the protests. X publicly stated it would refuse, calling the move a potential violation of free speech.

However, the platform has already yielded to Turkish government pressure in multiple cases, geo-blocking accounts for Türkiye.

Thousands displaced in southern Chile as devastating wildfires tear through the Biobío region. The area is known for land conflicts between Indigenous groups and powerful landowners. In the past, those landowners have deliberately started fires, both to clear territory and to frame Indigenous communities as “terrorists.”

The mayor of Hualqui, a town in the region, said yesterday that “we have no doubt that these fires were provoked.” In 2015, the Network for the Defense of the Territories, the Latin American Environmental Conflict Observatory (OLCA), filed a lawsuit presenting evidence that paramilitary groups being used by big landowners to deliberately start fires in the south-central regions of the country.

On this day in 2015, Saudi Arabia launched its brutal and illegal war on Yemen. The US-backed war has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis and at least 377,000 deaths.

Nine years on—and almost two years since Saudi bombs last rained down on Yemen—Saudi Arabia’s most important backers, the US and UK, have continued the deed by bombing Yemen in a new wave of aggression against the country.

A Yemeni shopkeeper stands firm as US bombs fall beside him.

The US-led bombing campaign in Yemen, carried out with the support of Gulf states, has killed at least 53 people. During the night, over 17 US strikes hit Saada and Amran in the northern part of the country. This aggression against Yemen aims to weaken its support for the Palestinian people, end the maritime blockade, and halt attacks on Israel.

Despite the aggression, Yemen's Ansarallah reaffirmed its support for the Palestinian people. Yesterday, it announced targeting Ben Gurion Airport with ballistic missiles, along with several US warships in the Red Sea, including the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.

"There are no human rights." — Listen to Hamdan Ballal, a Palestinian activist and director, in an interview with red. media from 2022 in Masafer Yatta.

Ballal, the Palestinian co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was brutally beaten and arrested by Israeli forces last night. After being attacked by Israeli settlers, he was taken to an ambulance for medical treatment—only to be arrested by Israeli forces while still inside. Ballal was released a few hours ago, having suffered beatings from both soldiers and settlers across his body.

Masafer Yatta, in the occupied West Bank, has been under threat of eviction since the 1980s, when the Israeli military designated the area a firing zone, ordering over 1,000 residents to be expelled. Israeli settlers and the army regularly attack residents, restrict their access to land, and destroy homes, tents, water tanks, and olive orchards.

📽 Full interview with Ballal coming soon.

Protests erupted in the streets of Goma over a potential mineral deal between the DR Congo and the US. Demonstrators voiced strong opposition to the proposed agreement, put forward by the Tshisekedi government, which would grant US corporations access to Congo’s vast mineral resources in exchange for military aid and possible US intervention.

Congo holds substantial reserves of cobalt, copper, tantalum, diamonds, and tin. All of these—except diamonds—are listed as critical minerals by the US government, resources Washington deems essential to counter China’s dominance in global supply chains. In return for military support against the M23 rebel group, Kinshasa appears willing to hand over strategic control of these resources to US interests.

Why are protests erupting in Indonesia right now?

Indonesia’s parliament has passed a controversial law expanding the military’s role in government. The new legislation, discussed behind closed doors, allows active-duty officers to occupy civilian posts in 14 state institutions, including the Supreme Court and the Attorney General’s Office. President Prabowo, a former special forces commander under Suharto’s dictatorship, approved the law—drawing comparisons to the military control of that era.

Demonstrations have broken out in multiple cities. Students, activists, and concerned citizens have taken to the streets. Police have responded with tear gas, water cannons, and batons. Dozens have been hospitalized. There are reports that some injured protesters are being arrested directly from hospitals.

In Surabaya, Molotovs were thrown during confrontations with riot squads. Protesters say the violence reflects growing frustration with escalating repression.

Turkish police are intensifying their crackdown on ongoing anti-government protests, as both law enforcement and the ruling AKP escalate their response.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Monday labeled the protests a “movement of violence,” while Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya accused demonstrators of “terrorizing the streets.”

The unrest—Turkey’s most intense in over a decade—is also shaking financial markets. The Istanbul Stock Exchange’s benchmark index dropped 16.6%, marking its worst decline since the 2008 global financial crisis.

Several opposition parties and activist groups have called for a boycott of pro-government media and institutions. Meanwhile, universities across the country are facing major disruptions as professors and students refuse to hold classes.

Venezuela has struck a new deal with the US over deported migrants. Instead of being sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison, they’ll now be returned to Venezuela via Honduras.

The deal requires the US to send the migrants to Honduras, and for the Venezuelan government to bring them home on government planes. Venezuela pushed for this deal after public outcry over Venezuelan migrants—with no criminal record—being accused of being gang members and sent by the US to prison in El Salvador, where they faced physical abuse and torture.

President Xiomara Castro in Honduras has helped facilitate this deal because flights between the US and Venezuela have been suspended.

Indonesia burns again as the second wave of #IndonesiaGelap protests explodes onto the streets. Students across the country are rising up against a new military law that allows active-duty officers to take civilian posts. Many see it as a return to the kind of military dominance that once defined the Suharto dictatorship.

From Yogyakarta to Malang, protests have turned violent. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and brutal force. In response, protesters in Malang set part of the DPRD building on fire. In Yogyakarta, student leader Tiyo Ardianto now faces open intimidation after leading a protest last week. Blood-red banners appeared near the demonstration site, accusing him and other activists of being foreign pawns.

The US bombed a residential area in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, killing one person and wounding 13 others, including three children.

American airstrikes have now entered their 10th day with no sign of stopping. The campaign, led by US President Trump, targets Yemen for its longstanding support for Gaza and its threats to US and Israeli interests in the region.
Yemen’s naval blockade has forced 75% of US-flagged shipping to avoid the Red Sea in an effort to reduce exposure to escalating attacks, according to US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He stated, “The last time one of our destroyers went through the straits there, it was attacked 23 times.”

The US-led bombing campaign in Yemen, implemented with the support of Gulf states, has killed at least 53 people. Despite the US aggression, drones from Yemen once again targeted Israeli settlements in occupied Palestine this morning, marking the third attack since Israel resumed its genocidal war on Gaza.

“The occupation wants to eliminate every aspect of life in Gaza,” said Dr. Atef Al-Hout, director of Nasser Hospital, speaking after his hospital was directly targeted by Israel a few hours ago.

The recent attack on Nasser Hospital killed at least five people and left several others wounded. During Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, the hospital has been repeatedly struck by Israeli airstrikes, in addition to enduring a devastating siege that lasted more than two months. After Israeli forces withdrew, a mass grave containing more than 300 bodies was discovered, some of which had their hands tied.

Today, Israel killed at least 51 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, displaced thousands, and besieged over 50,000 people with tanks near Rafah. Gaza’s civil defense has issued an international call to avert an 'imminent disaster' after losing communication with their team. Testimonies from survivors circulating online report mass executions in the besieged area.
