At least 33 people have died in Kinshasa, the capital of the DR Congo, due to flooding caused by torrential rains. The Ndjili River overflowed, submerging homes and infrastructure, leaving numerous people trapped.
Criticism has been mounting against the government for its slow response and poor disaster management. Kinshasa’s inadequate infrastructure, including blocked drainage systems, has worsened the crisis.
In an unusual turn, photos emerged showing civilians helping military officials through floodwaters, reversing the usual roles.
President Félix Tshisekedi faced public criticism as recovery efforts continue. The government has set up emergency shelters for displaced families, but many people remain without access to clean water and basic services.

Trump wants Palestinians to be expelled and Gaza under US control.
Standing beside Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu at the White House, the US president called Gaza “incredible real estate.” He said America should “own” and “control” it. Trump also reaffirmed his plan for the removal of Palestinians out of Gaza.
Netanyahu, under an active arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for war crimes, including the use of starvation as a weapon, stood alongside Trump. This occurred during Netanyahu’s official visit to the United States, where he still remains today. While the US is not obliged to enforce the warrant, ICC members, including France, let Netanyahu use their airspace.
Since January, Trump has publicly pushed for the displacement of Gaza’s population, calling the territory a “demolition site” and urging Egypt and Jordan to take them in. This plan has been widely condemned as a form of ethnic cleansing by the UN, Human Rights Watch, and legal scholars.

🟡 BREAKING: Stock markets are set for another bad week as they react to Trump’s protectionist tariff policies. Futures tied to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were down over the weekend and both are falling again today as markets open.
While many capitalists believed that tariffs would be a temporary measure to extract favorable trade deals with others, investors now realize that this will be a permanent policy under Trump, who is turning his back on the decades of free trade policy.
Instead of trying to compete with China in the open market, which the US has failed in thus far, US imperialism has resorted to leveraging the geopolitical power it still has to try and restore US manufacturing by force, despite production chains already being globalized.
Trump’s policy aims to “Make America Great Again” by cutting the trade deficit, but so far it has only resulted in: rising prices, retaliation, and accelerating the possibility of a recession.

Lebanon must dismantle not only Hezbollah but all militias in the country, according to Morgan Ortagus. The US Deputy Special Envoy to the Middle East visited Lebanon to stress the importance of dismantling Hezbollah to receive economic and military support from the US and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Lebanon has been struggling with an economic collapse since 2019. Beyond Hezbollah’s dismantling, US, IMF, and World Bank pressure ties funding to normalization with Israel. In February, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff suggested Lebanon and Syria could potentially join the Abraham Accords.
Israel's war on Lebanon killed over 4,060 and caused over $6 billion in damages. Despite obstacles, Hezbollah has been the primary source of funding for the reconstruction of southern Beirut and villages, committing an estimated $650 million.
Read here about Ortagus' role in the Arab-Israeli normalization deals and her unwavering support for Zionism.

Israel targeted a journalists' tent, burning some of them alive and severely injuring others.
Israel deliberately bombed a tent housing journalists near Nasser Hospital in the besieged Gaza Strip. At least two journalists, Helmi Al-Faqawi and Yousef Al-Khazindar, have been killed, and several others critically injured, including Ahmed Mansour, who was captured in the video.
Since October 2023, Israel has been deliberately targeting journalists, killing at least 210 in Gaza, making it the most dangerous region in the world for journalists in 2024. As testified by several journalists in the Gaza Strip, they have received death threats from Israeli intelligence agencies for their work.

The European Commission is proposing the creation of “return hubs,” centers for deporting migrants to third countries that are not necessarily their own. Migrant rights NGOs have condemned this and say that this is building extraterritorial jurisdiction, a concept that harks back to colonialism.

Venezuela will be bringing home their migrants from the US in government planes to ensure they do not get renditioned to Guantanamo Bay, El Salvador, or deported to a country that is not their own.
The program “Return to the Homeland” is also open for those who haven’t been deported but still wish to return, and all tickets will be free of charge. President Maduro announced that Venezuela is the only country in the world to offer this kind of protection to their migrants abroad.

A large protest erupted in Amman to denounce the Israeli genocide, call on the Jordanian government to take action, and condemn the collaboration between Jordan, Israel, and the US.
Protests were also recorded in Lebanon, Morocco, Algeria, and Yemen, where thousands took to the streets. Since October 2023, demonstrations across the Arab world have strongly opposed the normalization of relations with Israel. Reports have surfaced of crackdowns, arrests, and interrogations of activists in several Arab countries, including Jordan. Recently, Mohammad Al-Tawil, a Jordanian citizen, was sentenced to four years in prison for sharing an online video featuring the wills of two Jordanians who carried out a resistance operation against Israeli forces.

President Yoon Suk Yeol has been officially removed from office. The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea (ROK) ruled his martial law decree violated the constitution. The court found that Yoon used police and military force to block the National Assembly, calling it a serious attack on democratic rule.
As the ruling was announced, crowds of demonstrators outside the court erupted in celebration. For weeks, people across the ROK had protested against Yoon’s use of state violence to hold on to power. His martial law order in December led to soldiers entering parliament and triggered the country’s worst political crisis in decades.
With Yoon removed, the ROK will hold a new presidential election within 60 days. Supporters of Yoon had gathered near his residence waving US flags and repeating conspiracy slogans.
Why are Yoon supporters waving US flags? We broke it down here.

“We won’t survive this time. We are just waiting for our turn.” These are the words of residents trapped in the besieged Gaza Strip, enduring a genocide.
Israel continues to bomb the entire Gaza Strip, with a deliberate focus on shelters for displaced people, including schools, clinics, and makeshift tents. The UN has labeled Gaza as one of the most dangerous places in the world, reporting that over 280,000 people have been forcibly displaced since Israel renewed its assault.
Footage circulating online shows the repeated targeting of Dar al-Arqam School, where at least 18 children were killed. Struck multiple times, the attacks forced civil defense teams to abandon efforts to rescue survivors trapped beneath the rubble.
Israel’s ongoing violations of international law are not limited to Gaza; overnight bombings in Lebanon and Syria have left at least three people dead.

Iran and the US to meet Saturday for nuclear talks.
US President Trump announced that a high-level meeting with Iran will take place in Oman. Trump emphasized that the US is holding direct talks with Iran—a claim repeatedly denied by Iranian officials, who have only accepted indirect talks.
Trump said that “doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious,” hinting at a strike on Iran. Meanwhile, the US is reinforcing its military presence in the region—with warplanes and carriers—as part of its war on Yemen and pressure campaign against Iran.
Despite a US Intelligence Community report confirming that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon—and Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal—Israel and the US claim to want to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Netanyahu suggested using Libya’s 2003 nuclear disarmament deal as a model. Despite promises from the US and UK of revitalization, cooperation, and sanctions relief, Libya ultimately faced a NATO invasion in 2011.

Indigenous leaders are demanding equal decision-making authority as heads of state at the upcoming COP30 summit. The UN Climate Change Conference is scheduled for November of this year in Belém, Brazil.
Gathering in Brasília for a conference, 8,000 Indigenous leaders from around the world issued the call for substantive inclusion in climate policy decisions. Delegations from Latin America and the Pacific joined under the slogan “We are the response.”
In Brazil, severe drought conditions in 2024 contributed to wildfires that burned around 18 million hectares of Amazon rainforest, an area larger than all of England. While Brazil’s COP30 team announced an Indigenous Leadership Circle, participants argue that symbolic gestures are not enough.
This call for equitable representation comes at a time when the US is experiencing a resurgence of climate change denialism. The Trump administration has initiated policies that roll back environmental protections and promote fossil fuel production by big corporations.

Palestinian journalist Ahmad Mansour has died from severe burns caused by an Israeli airstrike. Footage captured him engulfed in flames moments after the strike.
Mansour was in a tent housing journalists next to Nasser Hospital, which was deliberately targeted by the Israeli army. Mansour is the third journalist killed in this attack, alongside one journalist who was burned alive and others who remain critically injured.
A recently published report indicates that over 232 journalists have been killed by Israel since October 2023. On average, 13 reporters and media workers have been killed every week in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s war on Gaza is the deadliest assault on media workers ever recorded.

“The first Intifada began with the killing of four people in Gaza. Now, 100 people are killed every day!” We spoke with Palestinians in the West Bank who joined the general strike to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza.
Palestinians condemned the massacres occurring in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, emphasizing their unity and calling for further action. People organized multiple protests in various cities, directly confronting Palestinian Authority forces and chanting against their collaboration with Israel.
The general strike, with participation from Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, saw many shops and businesses closed in solidarity with Gaza. A Jordanian activist was arrested on charges of participating in organizing the strike in solidarity with Gaza. Protests have also been held in Egypt, Pakistan, Morocco, Tunisia, and Mauritania.

Huge anti-Trump-Musk protests swept the US over the weekend, with attendance in the millions at a national level. Even cities such as Boston saw over 100,000 participating.
The politics were diverse, with the rallies billed as anti-austerity protests to defend public services and social rights. Official organizers also listed NATO as one of the institutions that need to be defended against Musk’s spending cuts. Meanwhile, others present at the rallies carried Palestinan flags and anti-war placards.
The rallies brought together different groups, ranging from liberals to leftist and socialist movements, with many opposed to the inclusion of NATO in the list of priorities from organizers.

The US rushes for Congo’s minerals as the war continues to devastate the east.
As rebels close in on Goma, Washington moves fast. Lithium, cobalt, copper—vital for smartphones, electric cars, and the so-called green transition. In return, the US offers promises of security to a government losing control.
Western firms—some backed by billionaires like Bill Gates—are circling contested mines. The aim: push China out, lock the supply chain in.
Talks began in February, when Congolese officials approached Washington with a proposal: access to strategic minerals in exchange for increased security. Since then, the US has quietly expanded its presence, laying the groundwork for a deeper foothold in Congo’s mining sector.
KoBold Metals, backed by Gates, Bezos, and other Silicon Valley names, is already exploring a massive copper-cobalt site in the south. Meanwhile, more than 140 armed groups operate in the east, where villages are emptied, lives are lost, and displacement rises by the day.

“Peace isn’t the answer. Liberation is the answer.”—On the birthday of Black revolutionary Kwame Ture, watch this iconic clapback, schooling a white person that “peace” merely serves as a demand of the oppressor. In contrast, “liberation” is the actual solution.
The 1967 documentary “Tell Me Lies” captured this conversation, which explores the global response to the Vietnam War. At the time of its release, the documentary was heavily attacked by imperialist advocates.
Ture’s words continue to resonate, especially in light of the ongoing genocide in Palestine, the unwavering resistance, and the reigniting discussion of liberation.

In honor of Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr., we remember his iconic speech at Stanford in 1967.
MLK’s insightful analysis revealed that the white ruling class’ racism and exploitation provoked the frustrations of the Black community, in particular, to boil over into violent outbursts in several US cities.
He understood that the root cause of these riots was the failure of the US establishment to address the demands of the Black community and poor people in general, famously dubbing the riots “the language of the unheard.”
