Do you know the story behind these horrifying images?

On this day in 2004, the world was shocked by leaked images of US soldiers committing war crimes at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The grim legacy of this scandal, however, still haunts us today, as those responsible for these heinous acts continue to evade justice.

Back in April 2004, the world was stunned by the release of hundreds of photos showing US military personnel brutalizing and sexually assaulting detainees at the infamous prison in Iraq. The Red Cross reported that up to 90% of the prisoners there had been wrongly detained.

These horrific images included US soldiers sexually assaulting and humiliating male and female prisoners, soldiers laughing and posing with the corpse of a detainee who had been tortured to death, and prisoners being subjected to electrocution threats and forced to simulate sex acts while soldiers looked on and cheered.

Happy Mussolini-Upside-Down-Day!

On this day, 80 years ago, the Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was executed, marking the end of more than 20 years of fascism in Italy. We have colorized photos from the era showcasing Italian anti-fascist partisan fighters.

Mussolini and his mistress disguised themselves as German soldiers and attempted to flee the country. However, a communist Partisan Brigade in the village of Dongo, on Lake Como, identified Mussolini, captured, and executed them.

The bodies of Mussolini, his mistress, and his fascist colleagues were transported to Milan, where they were displayed in a piazza. A furious crowd stomped on and spat on their bodies before they were strung up outside a gas station.

10,000 soldiers have surrounded Maoist fighters in India's largest military campaign against rural resistance in decades, according to Indian officials. Villages have been sealed off, water sources captured, and supply lines severed, leaving fighters and civilians trapped without food or escape.

The government calls it a “decisive campaign,” unleashing drones, explosives, and paramilitary squads across Chhattisgarh’s forests. Three women Maoists have already been killed under siege.

But this assault is only the latest phase of a silent war: over 300 Maoists have been killed in the past two years, deaths officials present as victories in a war against “internal threats.” Beneath the language of "development," the assault clears the way for mining corporations to seize the land and displace its people.

New footage shows masked French police violently storming the home of journalist Shahin Hazamy at dawn. Inside were his pregnant wife and two young children. Hazamy’s wife was thrown against a wall, while Hazamy was tackled to the ground, handcuffed, and pinned by the neck for nearly four minutes, struggling to breathe. His partner’s cries about his serious respiratory illness were ignored.

In the footage, officers try to dismantle the surveillance camera, while Hazamy’s 3-year-old son pleads with his mother: “The man hit Daddy.” Hazamy’s press credentials were dismissed. Phones, journalistic equipment, his wife’s computer, and even his children's tablet were seized.

Detained for more than 48 hours under vague terrorism charges, Hazamy’s case highlights a growing European crackdown on pro-Palestine journalism.

“I spent 11 days in a torture room.” – Álvaro Pato, communist militant and former political prisoner, was arrested and tortured during Portugal’s fascist state. On the 51st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, we remember the resistance and the legacy of the Portuguese Communist Party.

For nearly 50 years, Salazar’s fascism maintained control through brutal repression in Portugal, using torture, imprisonment, and executions to silence opposition. The state’s violent tactics, combined with the harsh economic reality faced by the working class and resistance to colonial wars, fueled widespread resentment.

The revolution on April 25, 1974, ended this. The communists played a key role in organizing resistance, advocating for nationalizations, land reforms, and expanding workers’ rights. Despite early victories, the revolution faced fierce opposition from reactionary forces, culminating in a counter-revolution that reversed many reforms. Nevertheless, the Carnation Revolution remains a symbol of resistance.

Happy 71st birthday to the Black revolutionary, journalist, and former Black Panther Party (BPP) member Mumia Abu-Jamal, described as “perhaps the world’s best-known death-row inmate.”

He received a death sentence in the US 42 years ago. After spending three decades on death row, a global solidarity movement successfully persuaded US authorities to commute his sentence to life imprisonment in 2011.

His trial was marred by numerous controversies, including allegations of witnesses being blackmailed and the presentation of questionable evidence. International human rights organizations vehemently opposed the sentence, citing concerns about police abuse and corruption.

One report concluded that “the proceedings used to convict and sentence Abu-Jamal to death violated minimum international standards that govern fair trial procedures.”

An Indigenous Amazonian community in Peru has seized control of an oil field and pipeline in their region. The move comes in protest against repeated oil spills that have contaminated their rivers. The Norperuvian Pipeline and Station 5, operated by Petroperú, are now under the control of the Awajún nation.

The rivers in the eastern Loreto department—used by the community for farming and fishing—have been poisoned by spills, yet surrounding communities have received no compensation. They are demanding urgent food and water aid from the government to offset their losses caused by the contamination of their water sources.

Hundreds of fascists gathered in Dongo, Italy, to commemorate the killing of the Italian fascist dictator Mussolini and 15 high-ranking fascist officials.

A police cordon separated the fascists from a counter-demonstration of citizens who had gathered to “defend the memory of the partisan martyrs.” Fascist salutes were met with jeers and the singing of “Bella Ciao.”

The Italian government has called for “sobriety” in the celebrations of Liberation Day. While government officials justified this by citing national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, critics view it as part of an increasingly fascist trend. In many cities, marches and events have been canceled, some bands have been asked to refrain from playing resistance anthems, and individuals have been identified for displaying banners supporting antifascism.

In 1945, the Italian fascist hierarchs, fleeing with Mussolini toward Switzerland, were captured and executed by the partisan resistance on April 28.

The DPRK confirmed for the first time that its soldiers are fighting for Russia in the war against Ukraine. Today, the ruling party’s newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that soldiers from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) are actively involved in combat in Russia’s Kursk region.

The report came just two days after Russian military sources officially acknowledged DPRK troops’ involvement in the conflict. Until now, both countries have been discreet about revealing information regarding DPRK troop participation.

The Russian Defense Ministry released footage showing how Russian forces have been training DPRK soldiers for their deployment. Before this, Western media had speculated widely about DPRK soldiers, describing their combat tactics as anything from “suicidal” to “highly effective.”

In June 2024, a military agreement was signed between Moscow and Pyongyang, guaranteeing mutual military support in case of war. Since then, Russia and the DPRK have deepened their military and economic ties.

The US bombed a migrant detention center in Saada, Yemen, killing at least 69 people and injuring 47. The center housed 115 migrants of African nationalities, more than half of whom were killed in the US aggression. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams continue to recover bodies.

According to the Yemeni Ministry of Interior, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were involved in supervising the center. However, no statement has yet been made by either humanitarian organization.

The latest US massacre in Yemen is part of an ongoing military offensive that began in mid-March under the Trump administration. US Central Command announced that it has conducted over 800 airstrikes in Yemen, killing more than 220 people.

Despite the US’s significant military and economic investment in the aggression against Yemen, the Yemeni Armed Forces continue to enforce the naval blockade and target US aircraft carriers and Israel.

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply after an attack killed 26 tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. India accused Pakistan of backing the attack, though it presented no public evidence. It then moved to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty — a vital agreement that guarantees Pakistan access to the rivers feeding its farms, energy grid, and drinking water.

The treaty, signed in 1960, had survived two wars. Pakistan, whose economy depends heavily on agriculture, warned that any disruption would be treated as an act of war. India also expelled diplomats, closed the main border, and ordered Pakistani nationals to leave. While pro-independence Kashmiri groups condemned the killings, Indian authorities have used the attack to tighten repression across Kashmir.

Gunfire has already been exchanged along the Line of Control. The risk of a wider conflict between two nuclear-armed states is growing — in one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world.

Italian communists led the anti-fascist resistance that overthrew Mussolini and helped end WW2. Today, Italy celebrates “Liberation Day” to commemorate the victory of the resistance.

We should remember that the most significant armed resistance group was the “Garibaldi Brigades,” led by the Communist Party of Italy. Liberals and social democrats were also part of the resistance but played a much smaller role.

However, the Communist Party did not always support a strategy of armed struggle against Mussolini, despite being urged by Lenin and Gramsci to do so.

Apple and Meta were fined €700 million by the EU for abusing market dominance—a penalty far below what EU law intended. Fines could have reached billions, suggesting Brussels bowed to US pressure. Days before, Trump had paused tariff threats against Europe.

This is part of a broader story. In the early 2000s, the EU briefly blocked major US mergers that could create monopolies. In response, Washington pushed for deregulation. By 2004, most tools to stop corporate consolidation were dismantled. Giants across sectors expanded unchecked—especially tech.

Regulation of user data was the only area where Brussels tried to regain control, challenging transatlantic capital. EU rules introduced fines and limits on data-driven business, directly impacting tech profits.

Trump is back, Big Tech executives are in his cabinet, and Musk supports far-right parties in Europe, aligning with movements that push for deregulation. Silicon Valley aligned with Trump to shape future policies—and now, that alliance is paying off.

Across West Africa, the era of polite dependency may be ending. Governments are taking steps to reverse neocolonial control over currency and resources. From mining to fossil fuels, states are asserting ownership over wealth long extracted for foreign profit.

Mali has led the shift with a mining code granting the state up to 30% ownership. After pushback, authorities jailed executives, seized 3 tons of gold, and boosted revenues by 52.5% in 2024.

In Senegal, President Faye launched audits of oil and gas contracts with firms like BP, focusing on costs and profit terms. He also renewed calls to replace the CFA franc with a sovereign currency—challenging a system that ties economies to France’s central bank.

Burkina Faso is exiting mining contracts seen as skewed toward foreign firms. The government is rewriting terms, cutting exemptions, and raising public stakes in extraction.

Ghana has targeted gold smuggling, banning foreign buyers and centralizing trade under a new agency, GoldBod.

🟡 NEW: Jordan has banned the Muslim Brotherhood, accusing the group of “destabilizing the country’s security, stability, and national unity.” The move follows the arrest of 16 individuals allegedly involved in manufacturing rockets, drones, and arms trafficking.

The Muslim Brotherhood has long been a significant political force in Jordan, with strong grassroots support. The Islamic Action Front — a political party affiliated with the Brotherhood and the largest opposition party in the country — now faces the risk of being dissolved.

Interior Minister Mazen Farraya stated: “It has been proven that members of the group operate in the dark and engage in activities that could destabilize the country.” All Brotherhood offices and headquarters in Jordan will be shut down, and any events, groups, or entities linked to it could now face legal action. This move could also affect protest efforts in Jordan against the genocide in Gaza, as the group has played a key role in organizing many of the demonstrations.
