80,000 anti-AfD protesters filled Hamburg, Germany, for the biggest protest yet against the far-right party since their "secret meeting" with the fascist Identitarian Movement was revealed.
The turnout shows that the anti-AfD movement is snowballing across the country and is the highlight of over a week of nationwide protests since the meeting with the Identitarian Movement was reported earlier this month. The meeting was held in November last year, whereby the Identitarian's "remigration" plot to deport migrants and German citizens with a migration background was discussed. High ranking members of the former ruling party CDU were present alongside wealthy business people. Citizens with a migration background makeup 25 per cent of the German population.

WATCH NOW our latest documentary "The Siege of Jenin: Israel’s War on the West Bank", showing the devastating consequences of Israel's attack on Jenin Refugee Camp.
In December last year, Israeli forces invaded the camp in the occupied West Bank, first draining resistance fighters of ammunition, then ensuring they had no backing from the Palestinian Authority forces. With electricity, water, and telecommunications shutdown, Palestinian civilians are bearing the brunt of the siege and scores of residents have been indiscriminately killed by Israel.
This is part of the all out war on Palestine, and the style and size of the destruction in Jenin parallels what Israel is inflicting on Gaza.

Tear gas, water cannons, and protests dominated the streets of Nugegoda, a suburb of Sri Lanka's capital, as police forces violently cracked down on student protesters rallying against austerity measures. The Inter-University Students Federation has called for protecting education from these measures.
Sri Lanka experienced massive student-led protests in 2022 that culminated in the storming of the presidential palace and the subsequent ouster of former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa. However, the political system remained essentially unchanged, and many in Colombo face a situation similar to 2022.
In December, the International Monetary Fund confirmed a $2.9 billion bailout package linked to significant privatization reforms and severe austerity measures. Sri Lanka declared bankruptcy in April 2022, burdened with more than $83 billion in debt.
As the country approaches the 2024 presidential election, the People's Liberation Front, a self-described Marxist-Leninist party, is polling at 59%, emerging as the front-runner.

Massive protests erupt across Germany in the wake of record poll ratings for the far-right AfD party (Alternative for Germany) and the uncovering of the party’s plot to launch mass deportations after seizing power. Politicians of the previous ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU) also attended the AfD-led meeting. Further protests are planned for the coming days.
The AfD is on the verge of becoming Germany’s main opposition party to the ruling coalition of the Social Democratic, Liberal, and Green parties, which is increasingly plummeting in the polls. The coalition is failing to tackle critical domestic and foreign policy issues such as the war in Ukraine, the Gaza war, and the rising cost-of-living crisis in Germany.
Investigations revealed last week secret meetings of the AfD together with fascist organizations, CDU politicians, and top German businessmen. At the meeting, a “master plan” was discussed, which the AfD calls “remigration” – the expulsion of people with a migration background.
The latest developments have sparked widespread calls for the AfD party to be banned, a vital demand of the current mass protests. Top politicians in the ruling coalition have spoken out in favor of a ban, although the liberal faction, the FDP, is more critical of a ban. Germany’s oldest mainstream news program, Tagesthemen, also published an editorial article titled “Commentary on the AfD ban: the time has come.”
Over 1,300,000 people signed an online petition calling for the outlawing of AfD top politician Björn Höcke, who, according to a court ruling, can be classified as a fascist.

Did you know that the CIA once orchestrated the execution of Patrice Lumumba by a firing squad? On this day in 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of the Congo, was executed by a firing squad following assassination plots concocted by the US and Belgian governments.
Lumumba's anti-imperialism and his vision of a united Congo made him an adversary of both Belgium and USimperialism. Although the CIA ordered his assassination, they weren't able to carry it out themselves. Instead, Washington and Brussels secretly funneled cash and aid to rival politicians who organized a coup and arrested Lumumba. He was then beaten, tortured, and killed.

Germany’s far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is making headlines again. Why? Leading figures of the AfD attended a secret far-right meeting. Together with the other attendants, they discussed their plan of “remigration,” the deportation of millions of people from Germany based on racist criteria—the same plan top AfD politician Björn Höcke has been advocating for to “ethnically homogenize Germany and Europe.”
Amid mass protests against the AfD and the government’s debate to ban the party, over 1,300,000 people have already signed an online petition calling for the outlawing of Höcke, who, according to a court ruling, can be classified as a fascist. Höcke not only represents the fascist wing of the AfD but is also the party’s most influential politician. He is no less known for his infamous speeches with allusions to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. He continuously talks about the alleged “extermination” of Germans and their “glorious history.” According to Höcke, “the main problem is that Hitler is portrayed as the absolute evil.”
In addition to the AfD, leading figures of the Identitarian movement, fraternity members, top business persons, and even members of Germany’s former ruling and still most popular party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), attended the meeting, proving that amid record nationwide approval ratings of the AfD, their far-right ideas have arrived to take their place at the center of German society.

Clashes erupted between police and students in the Greek capital, Athens, as they rallied to protest the government's plan to introduce private universities to the country—students from various faculties gathered before Athens University as riot police cracked down on the protest.
The law, adopted on January 11, has sparked widespread protests across the country. Mobilization and occupations in higher and secondary education are entering their second week now. Student unions believe the move will devalue degrees from Greece's public universities and only further strengthen the commercialization of education; this could eventually lead to many of Greece's 24 government-funded public universities, where attendance has been free for decades, facing closure while the private system will exclude those who cannot afford it.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' government has already previously implemented a series of educational reforms despite fierce opposition from students and staff.

On Patrice Lumumba's death anniversary, we remember the words of the Congolese revolutionary and first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His analyses combined Congo's colonial past with an optimistic view of a future in which Africa takes control of its own history and destiny.
More than 60 years later, the consequences of Lumumba's assassination are still being felt by the Congolese people. Multinational corporations continue to plunder the wealth and resources of the Democratic Republic of Congo, making the country one of the poorest in the world.
In February 2002, the Belgian government admitted "an irrefutable share of responsibility for the events that led to Lumumba's death." In July 2002, documents released by the US government revealed that the CIA was instrumental in Lumumba's assassination by supporting his killers with money, political support, weapons, and military training.

Dozens of journalists in Gaza protested targeted killings by Israel against their press colleagues. The war is the deadliest for journalists in history, surpassing World War II, warns the Committee to Protect Journalists. Over 100 journalists have been killed since Israel’s war on Gaza began on October 7, according to the Gaza Media Office.
The signs held up during the protest read in Arabic, “No to targeting journalists” and “Targeting journalists is a crime.” Al-Manar TV correspondent Abu Aoun said in a speech, “The invincible will of journalists is derived from the power of the Palestinian people. The coverage will continue.”
The extermination war against Gaza is the first in human history to be broadcast to the world in such detail in near real-time through the tireless efforts of regional journalists. The U.S. is reinforcing its main military outpost in the Indo-Pacific by constructing another U.S. military base on Japan’s Okinawa. The island already serves as a fortress in the U.S. geopolitical interests, primarily to keep China at bay. The decision is another blow to the people of Okinawa, who voted 72% against constructing another U.S. military base in 2019.
The regional population has a traumatizing relationship with the U.S. presence - most notoriously for the so-called “1995 incident,” when U.S. soldiers kidnapped and raped a 12-year-old girl. In addition, a report by the Japanese Communist Party recorded over 6000 criminal acts by U.S. personnel in Okinawa, including murder.
The beginning of the construction of the U.S. base once again violates the right to self-determination of the regional people, who tried in vain to prevent the construction through tireless protests. Okinawa accounts for only 0.6% of Japan’s territory but is home to 70% of all U.S. bases in Japan, the most crucial pawn for U.S. imperialism in the region.

More than 300 farmers tried to storm a supermarket in Avignon, France, setting fire to barricades in front of its doors and occupying its parking lot with tractors in protest “against unfair payment.” The Young Farmers’ Union, which led the protest, emphasized they are working at a loss, under pressure from large-scale retail negotiators to cut prices.
“Through this cry of alarm, we are denouncing the measures announced by our government, which is slow in coming, and promises that have not been kept” - France’s government is failing to deliver on promises to protect farmers from exploitative corporate policies.
“We are fed up. [...] Today we can’t take it anymore, and we have to go out into the street”’ - said another union spokesperson.
The protests continue a broad trend in several EU countries, with farmers rising up against working conditions and regulations linked to EU laws. The protests echo last week’s week-long farmers’ revolt in Berlin, Germany. Similar protests have erupted in the Netherlands, Belgium, and other EU countries in recent months.

Iran's IRGC launched several ballistic missile attacks against alleged Israeli espionage targets and a base hosting U.S. military personnel in Iraq's Kurdistan region. Another IRGC-claimed long-range missile attack also hit targets in northern Syria, allegedly linked to the so-called Islamic State.
The strikes on targets in Syria came in response to a devastating ISIS-claimed bombing in Iran's Kerman earlier this year, in which at least 103 were killed, according to Iranian state media. The alleged Mossad base in the capital of Iraq's Kurdistan region was reportedly linked to several targeted killings of senior IRGC commanders since October 7.
The attack also killed oil tycoon Peshraw Dizayee in Erbil, who reportedly facilitated oil exports to Israel. In total, local authorities report at least four dead and five wounded.
Bases of the U.S.-led coalition in Syria and Iraq have come under fire over 100 times since the Palestinian October 7 offensive with rockets and threatening attacks by various non-state militias in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel's war on Gaza. As a result, the U.S. increased its military presence in Iraq and Syria with 1,500 troops, officially announced in early January.
