Me and my friend (who are both in High school 10th grade) calculated approximately the Δx (shift) of the earth when a medium NASA rocket takes off. Self #Self
DISCLAIMER: THIS IS VERY APPROXIMATED; WE WERE JUST HAVING FUN
Let's start by defining Newton's Second Law: F = ma.
And let's google the medium weight and acceleration of a rocket, let's not include the gravity change whilst going up into the atmosphere given that we will be using Newton's Third Law (for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction), let's also assume that a rocket assumes the same acceleration a for the whole takeoff, approx. 2 min.
mass of a rocket: 100 tons, 10\^5 kg.
a: 1.7 g
t (time) : 2 minutes = 120 s
mass of the earth: 5.98 * 10\^24 kg
Now let's get calculating!
The total force is F = ma, which for the third law, is applied to the earth, F= 1.7*9.81 N/kg * 10\^5 kg, which is 1667700 N.
So the acceleration of the earth is: F/mass of the earth = a, 1667700 N /(5.98*10\^24 kg) = 2.8*10\^-19 m/s\^2.
The Δx (shift), is so defined by, the uniformly accelerated motion hourly law, Δx = 1/2 a * t\^2, given that the intial speed and position are 0, (experimenter's choice).
Δx = 1/2 * 2.8*10\^-19 *120\^2= 2.016 * 10\^-15
So the Δx is 2.016 * 10 \^ -15 meters, which is:
2.016\10\^-9 μm
2.016 fm (fentometers)
0.000038 hydrogen atoms.
0.72 of an electron radius.
To move the earth by 100 meters, it would take about:
4.96 * 10\^16 rockets
Which means that if we launch about 183 rockets per year (data taken by 2023 sent rockets, which are basically the same as other years), it would take 2.7 *10\^14 years.
Nasa or any other space company will not have to worry about moving the earth too much, ahahah!

request Help my shower brain please
Ok so I was standing in the shower and a really weird thought came to mind, hopefully someone can answer the math problem to help my sanity 😂
So I take a pill for my allergies every day. There are 30 pills in a bottle. Typically I get my new pill bottle when I have two or three pills remaining, at which point I dump the remaining two pills into the new pill bottle. My stupid shower was wondering what the odds are of one pill from the first pill bottle of the year somehow surviving and making it all the way to the last pill bottle of the year.
Would this just be "simple" math of (30×29×28×27×26×25×24×23×22×21×20×19×18×17×16×15×14×13×12×11×10×9×8×7×6×5×4×3×2) 12 = 3.18303431 x 10^33
Someone tell me if the odds really are this long please and put my shower brain at ease 😂
