Is Mercury Found in Nature?
Like lead or cadmium, mercury is a constituent element of the earth, a heavy metal. In pure form, it is known alternatively as "elemental" or "metallic" mercury (also expressed as Hg(0) or Hg0). Mercury is rarely found in nature as the pure, liquid metal, but rather within compounds and inorganic salts.

What percentage of the earth's water is drinkable?
Two percent of the water on earth is glacier ice at the North and South Poles. This ice is fresh water and could be melted; however, it is too far away from where people live to be usable. Less than 1% of all the water on earth is fresh water that we can actually use.

Can a shark swim backwards?
Unlike fish, sharks cannot stop suddenly or swim backwards.
A shark's pectoral fins cannot bend upwards like a fish, limiting its swimming ability to forward motion. If a shark needs to move backwards, it uses gravity to fall, not swim backwards.

Why do airlines apply Speed Tape to their planes?
Airlines apply speed tape to their planes to temporarily repair minor damages to the aircraft's exterior.
Speed tape is a thin, aluminum tape with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is designed to withstand high temperatures and wind speeds, making it ideal for use on aircraft.
Speed tape is typically used to repair small dents, scratches, or cracks in the aircraft's skin. It can also be used to cover holes or gaps in the skin.
Speed tape is not a permanent repair, but it can keep the aircraft airworthy until a more permanent repair can be made.
The gaps between panels or fairings create drag if they aren't filled. The gaps also let water in, which can cause corrosion.
Normally, if they aren't removable panels that get opened all the time, they are sealed using a rubber compound called PRC to make a fillet seal.
The PRC takes a while to cure, so sometimes if a plane flies, the sealant will be covered with speed tape to stop it from getting damaged before it sets.
Or the seal will be temporarily made with just tape.
Or sometimes little fairings, bits of plane skin that are not structural, fall off or get damaged, and tape is used to replace them.

Though some fish can breathe on land taking oxygen from air, most of the fish, when taken out of water, suffocate and die.
This is because gill arches of fish collapse, when taken out of water, leaving the blood vessels no longer exposed to oxygen in air.

Do insects have lungs?
Instead of lungs, insects breathe with a network of tiny tubes called tracheae. Air enters the tubes through a row of holes along an insect's abdomen. The air then diffuses down the blind-ended tracheae. Since the biggest bugs have the longest tracheae, they should need the most oxygen to be able to breathe.

When was the wireless phone invented?
A jazz musician named Teri Pall invented a version of the cordless phone in 1965 but could not market her invention, as its 2-mile (3.2 km) range caused its radio signals to interfere with aircraft communications. In 1968, she sold her rights to the cordless phone to a manufacturer who modified it for practical use.

Why do lakes freeze from the top down rather than the bottom up?
The reason why ice forms on the top of lakes and ponds is that once water cools below 39 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes lighter and less dense the more it cools. This means that water expands as it freezes into ice. As a result, ice takes up more room than the water it was made from.

What percent of calories does the brain use?
While a brain takes up about twenty percent, or 300, of a resting body's 1300 calories a day, and while it has the potential to burn more, it's estimated that most actual thinking only changes the amount of calories that the brain burns by around twenty to fifty calories per day.

How are lab grown Diamonds made?
Artificial diamonds, also known as laboratory-grown diamonds or synthetic diamonds, are diamonds that are created in a controlled laboratory environment rather than being formed naturally in the Earth's crust. These diamonds have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as natural diamonds, but they are produced through advanced technological processes.
The process of creating artificial diamonds involves replicating the conditions under which natural diamonds are formed, such as high pressure and temperature. Two main methods are commonly used: the High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) method and the Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method.
In the HPHT method, a small diamond seed is placed in a press that applies immense pressure and temperature, similar to the conditions found deep within the Earth. This process allows the carbon atoms in the seed to rearrange and form a larger diamond crystal.
The CVD method involves placing a diamond seed in a chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas, such as methane. The gas is then heated and broken down into carbon atoms, which are deposited onto the seed, gradually forming a larger diamond crystal.
It's important to note that artificial diamonds are not imitations or simulants; they are genuine diamonds with the same properties as natural diamonds, but they are created in a laboratory rather than being mined from the Earth.

Why do flamingos stand on one leg?
Flamingos often stand on one leg, the other leg tucked beneath the body. The reason for this behaviour is not fully understood. Recent research indicates that standing on one leg may allow the birds to conserve more body heat, given that they spend a significant amount of time wading in cold water.

How long is a kangaroo baby when it is born?
The young kangaroo, or joey, is born alive at a very immature stage when it is only about 2 cm long and weighs less than a gram. Immediately after birth it crawls up the mother's body and enters the pouch. The baby attaches its mouth to one of four teats, which then enlarges to hold the young animal in place.

How long does it take for your body to digest a piece of gum?
You might have heard that swallowed gum stays in your stomach for 7 years.
That's not true.
Though your stomach can't break down a piece of gum the same way it breaks down other food, your digestive system can move it along through normal intestinal activity.

What connects the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean?
The Panama Canal is not the only water line connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There's a place in Wyoming—deep in the Teton Wilderness Area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest—in which a creek splits in two. Like the canal, this creek connects the two oceans dividing North America in two parts.
