Although it is generally illegal, physical punishment continues in many countries. Some argue that parents should have the right to punish their children in this way.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Corporal punishment controversially continues to be part of upbringing in most cultures across the world. Even though it is commonly banned, there are those claiming that parents are entitled to penalise their children in this contentious manner. I absolutely disagree with this assertion due to traumas and mental disorders caused by this punishment along with its ineffectiveness.

To substantiate my position, it is required to take into account psychological as well as emotional traumas inflicted once physical punishment is imposed. Not only can this make minors scared of making mistakes, but also constantly seek approval and attention when they grow up. Although some may state that childhood traumas are inevitable, the influence level of this punishment is capable of overshadowing any others.

Another argument opposing this so-called way of nurturing is its counterproductive quality. The more we spank, slap or hit our daughters and sons, the more they hate themselves which leads to diminishing self-esteem. Irrespective of external factors able to entail the same, they in combination with child abuse can escalate the situation leading to further inadequate developments in a child.

Along with this, corporal punishment is neither an effective solution, nor a part of wholesome parenting. Parents who apply it mostly cannot discipline their children with words, nor are they patient and adaptive enough. There are two approaches to nurturing a child, which almost guarantee to yield dividends. Firstly, it can be suggested to provide children with everything they wish for, but under certain conditions. Conditions, in turn, must correspond with the desire. For instance, a visit to a party can be allowed provided that children show an exemplary behavior both at home and studies, while an expensive item, say car, can be bought should they pass the admission test for a bachelor’s degree. Alternatively, a more affordable way of parenting can be proposed, that is providing children with everything in moderation. With the help of this, children can be kept not only fed, but also hungry, which will stipulate them to act independently and eventually achieve their aims and firmly stand on their feet.

With regard to the initial manner of upbringing, it entails one positive outcome, yet accompanied with two negative ones. The provided pie charts compare the percentages of various ways to reach the university in the years 2004 and 2009. Overall,in both years people preferred using vehicles to get ( commute to is a better word here. Plus, the sentence itself doesn’t make much sense, the writer should have phrased it better) the university; while in the former year the most used vehicle was car, in the latter,however(no need for however since while already connects two sentences), bus was prioritized(problems with articles). All ways to reach university saw their indexes increase, excluding car. As for the degree of change, the ones for bus and car were the greatest. (In general, the overview is not bad. It is quite complete since almost everything has been mentioned. However, the way everything has been put into words leaves more to be desired).

As regards to the first given year, car was the most used with 51%. Figures for bus followed this with 33%.Bicycle,meanwhile, ranked third with 9%, which was (needs the)threefold of train. Finally, Walking found itself between them, with 4%. (Overall, not bad, but too data-driven, needs more meaning).

Turning to the second year, only car witnessed a drop and constituted 28%. Bus had become the most used way to reach academic institution(46%)surpassing car. Utilization of bicycles increased and accounted for 16%, which, paradoxically(used for the sake of using, no need for this word though), was fourfold of train. Walking grew slightly and made up 6%. (Everything is mentioned, but connections should’ve been used better. Plus, it lacks a sentence like - 16% of people used X).

I believe this is a B2 level essay. Strong 6 if not weak 6.5.

Change can either lead to a breakthrough or failure. While some are open to embrace it, living comfortably by maintaining their original lifestyle is the option of the rest. I think change must be welcomed, but not forced.

They are the adventurous who cannot do without change. It is their character that drives them forward and positive outlook that paves the way for the journey. Because of the former, they crave variety and due to the latter, they have a nerve to pursue novelty. The combination of the two make up an ideal duo to accept the challenge and eventually conquer it despite some obstacles on the way.

Those who are unwilling to make changes to their life, however, share two common features. First is the established comfort zone. Some are too comfortable with available that resist change by any means and proceed to exist instead of living. Second, meanwhile, is fear. Having achieved decent results in life, people become more cautious about change since should a step be put wrong, the stakes are too high. As a consequence, they gain stability at the expense of a wasted opportunity to succeed at a larger scale.

Coming to my position toward change, I am of two minds. On the one hand, if change shows a potential to alter our life for the better, it ought to be accepted. On the other hand, if a positive outcome is almost surreal, it is wiser to abstain ourselves from changing.

Compared is the amount of waste produced in six countries over a span of two decades. Out of all these countries, only Korea decreased its waste production, with the US being the least environmentally-friendly country, whereas Ireland and Portugal the most. For the record, there is no data for Ireland in 1990 and Korea in 1980.

As regards 1980, the US produced 131million tons of waste and Japan followed it with 28million tons. The country ranking third was Poland with 4million tons of waste production, while Portugal’s figure was the half of it, when Ireland’s was the quarter of Portugal’s.

Turning to 1990, the US was still on top, but by this time had had the waste production risen by further 20million tons. The indexes of Japan with Korea and Poland with Portugal were almost identical, with ratios constituting 32 to 31 million tons and 5 to 3 million tons respectively.

Coming to the last year given, we can see that not only did the US keep its dominance, but also expanded the gap from the second ranking country - 192million tons and 53million tons - the latter indicator belongs to Japan. The waste productions of Poland, Portugal and Ireland, meanwhile, were very similar, 6.6million tons for the first and 5million tons for the other two. Finally, the last number deserves particular attention; the Republic of Korea managed to reduce its harm to environment from 31 to 19 million tons.

Our interests and predilections never stay the same and neither do our preferences for food. It is, in this sense, predicted that the prevalence of convenience food will be both high in the future and ultimately render conventional foods as well as cooking techniques obsolete. I entirely disagree with this statement due to the huge range of traditional foods, negative attitudes towards ready-made ones and the cultural aspect of this question.

The unlikelihood of this prediction can be related to a huge diversity of flavours offered by national cuisines. It is true that every employee is normally compensated in accordance with the value they bring to their workplace. There is, in this sense, a notion that top layers of a company’s hierarchy should earn more than the rest of their team. I totally support this statement due to the amount of work completed by company leaders, the burden of responsibility they carry and the harmful nature of universal compensation.

To substantiate their right to be paid more, we should consider all the hard work and time invested by bosses in their career. Not only did they constantly hone their professional skills, but also sacrificed most of their life to climb a competitive career ladder. Should they be promoted because of either nepotism or cronyism, they will nevertheless not last longer at their posts.

Another factor corroborating my stance is the pressure put on CEOs and executives, as they are in charge of every single operation in a company. No matter how many responsibilities subordinates have, they still succumb to those owned by their colleagues above in the level of risk associated with them. The reason for this is that the more decision making a position stipulates, the more risky this job becomes.

Along with this, although the same enumeration across all positions may seem fair at first glance, this can inflict chaos at work. This idealistic initiative is able to neither incentivise the workforce to develop and eventually earn more, nor make them stick to subordination. To pay equal salaries to all staff is, hence, to lead any organisation into collapse.

In conclusion, I entirely agree that those holding higher company posts deserve to be paid more than others.

There is a heavy dispute going on over the most influential period of life. While some claim that the experiences children undergo before school are the most important in shaping an individual, others argue that the ones which take place in the teenage hood are of more importance. The way I see it, the former view is attributable to the majority, yet the life of the minority has to be taken into account as well.

Once a child is born, they can be perceived as a white canvas and their formation is down to the artistic skills of parents. Regarding my opinion, I am convinced that most people are formed before school, but in the life of some, teenage years can entail a twist. It may be as positive, so negative. The major reason behind this is peer pressure. Those who surround themselves with ambitious people can follow them up, whereas others can be dragged down by the unambitious.

In conclusion, despite the debate, I am sure that the influence of teenage hood on our life is nowhere close to the one of childhood.

Given is information about an adult education center. While the bar graph shows how many male and female attendees were there in 2009, the pie chart details the age brackets they fell to.

As for the overall trend of the former graph, it is visible that female students outnumbered the male counterparts in three courses out of four, with language course being the most popular among the women and painting among the men.

Looking closely at the graph, the trend language, drama as well as sculpture courses shared was a twofold difference in the number of male and female students; whereas in the first two ratios were 40 to 20 and 20 to 10 in favor of females, in the last one males were ahead - 10 against 5. In painting, however, the gap was less marked - 30 females and 25 males.

Turning to the overview of the latter graph, we can see a positive correlation among age groups and their interest in the offered evening courses.

More specifically, these courses were mostly attended by the eldest age group(50 or over), their figure constituted 42%, which was almost the ninefold of the youngest group(under 20), with only 5%. Finally, the proportions of 20-29, 30-39 and 40-49 were in an ascending order at 11, 16 and 26.

The role of traditions has been heavily discussed over the last few years. While some claim that youngsters should follow them, others argue that the young should have the freedom of behavior. I, on my part, believe that the youth ought to be encouraged to live in accordance with traditions, but not forced.

It is important to demand from the young to follow traditions in order to preserve them. Because of the going-on globalization, many young people have a chance to compare the local traditions with the ones overseas. Since foreign almost always seems more attractive due to the mystery behind it, many do not value the available. As a result, local traditions are being neglected in most of the countries, which is bound to lead to the loss of a nation’s identity. In order not to let it happen, youngsters are expected to feel the responsibility and follow the traditions so that their country can be proud of them and descendants can genuinely feel how honorable it is to be the citizen of that country.

There are, however, numerous people who disagree with this, saying that life is given only once and every person must have a chance to live it however they wish to. The reason behind this attitude is the actively promoted idea of individualism. Many think we have already spent a lot of time living in a societal frame sacrificing our interests in favor of the majority and now it is high time to break stereotypes and live for the loved self.

As for my opinion, young people should be incentivized to follow the traditions of their society, but whether to do it or not has to be decided by them. In any scenario, I am sure that there will be people who follow traditions willingly, not reluctantly because of being made to do so. After all, living well must be prioritized over living by the book.

In conclusion, traditions are crucial and have to be retained, but not at the expense of our freedom.

Teenage hood and adulthood are viewed as the most eventful stages of life, but which one is the happiest is open to question. While some experience the uttermost feelings of joy in the former, the others do it in the latter. The way I see it, the consensus over which is indeed happier cannot be reached since everything is up to life circumstances of each and every individual.

There are two reasons why teenage life may seem happier. Firstly, they have a wonderful chance to spend as much time with their friends as they could only wish. Adults, on the contrary, cannot afford it due the responsibilities they bear in their shoulders. Because of this, teenagers have more moments to enjoy, which increases their general level of happiness. Secondly, our teenage years are the time when we experience romantic feelings for the first time. Having tasted love, teenagers live in ecstasy feeling that there is nobody happier than them.

Freedom, however, is the reason why adults may seem happier. Not only do grown-ups have the freedom of choice, but also financial freedom; two factors, which teenagers desperately lack for complete fulfillment. Not being dependent on others and being in charge of own life, adults intrinsically are blessed to control their level of happiness. They themselves decide how to occupy their time and what to purchase, owing to which feel more satisfied.

I sincerely believe that people can be happier as in teenage hood so in adulthood based on their family circumstances. Youngsters who grow under generous, but ignorant families tend to feel the happiest before the adult life, whereas those who are nurtured by frugal, but attentive parents are inclined to feel the happiest in adulthood. Simply put, the period when we are shaped, childhood along with early adolescence, predetermine our life. Either because of short-term happiness we may lose the long-term one, or by undergoing short-term struggle, we may gain long-term happiness.

To sum up, both discussed periods have their own advantages over each other, yet it is impossible to put one over another.

Motivation from recent events.

Adesanya lost 3 fights to Pereira, but in all of them was very close to winning. Yesterday when my friend asked me about this fight I said that Adesanya was gonna take it because God always rewards the one who doesn't give up. He didn't hang his head, he kept putting the work and earned the happy end.

Same goes to Real Madrid. They lost 3 matches to Barcelona, but were better than Catalans in last two losses. Leading to the last game I felt RM winning and they just destroyed their rivals.

So, what is the moral? Failure is not the final destination, it's an extra fuel to put more work. Go hard and hold hard, so that God will reward you!

Do the advantages of patriotism outweigh its disadvantages?

All world governments endeavour to indoctrinate the love for one’s nation, also known as patriotism, in their population. As every coin has both sides, so does this sentiment. Though at first glance this may appear to be favourable, I believe that it is, for the most part, disadvantageous.

Those advocating patriotism put forward its ability to unify the whole nation. Not only can this so-called unconditional love make inhabitants proud of their origin, but also encourage them to support their motherland in hard times of financial instability as well as existential threat. This argument, however, fails to stand criticism, should we take into account its potential to turn into unrequited love and a situation, where ordinary people are fed with nothing, but unfulfilled promises and idealistic notions.

In this regard, since ancient times patriotism has represented a manipulation leverage inflicting atrocious carnages. Despite the presence of rationally thinking layers of society, they still cannot constitute a majority. An overwhelming share of the nation may, thus, fall victim to manipulative tricks turning them eventually into cannon fodder given that their critical thinking abilities are inhibited by blind love.

Along with its adverse impact on our subconscious minds, what also needs to be admitted is that there is a fine line between patriotism and fascism. Because patriotism can effortlessly be twisted, such anti-human movements as racism, xenophobia and other forms of discrimination are regularly disguised as patriotic sensations. Irrespective of the possibility to promote a healthy version of this sense, current affairs show otherwise and the Russian-Ukrainian war is a paradigm, where unquestionable obedience is costing thousands of human lives at present.

In conclusion, although patriotism does offer some benefits, its drawbacks eclipse them.

🚰 The amount of drinkable water for people is decreasing. Why is this? What can be done?

Along with oxygen and sleep, potable water embodies a necessity mankind cannot go without. The irony is that almost everyone tends to take this vital resource for granted and it is becoming less and less available day by day. Whereas reckless disregard for it and misuse are inflicting its shrinkage, introducing stiffer fines and stricter policies can resolve this.

Irrespective of its indispensable nature we humans as a whole are inclined either to squander or apply distilled water not as intended. Not only do we often take no notice of taps running non-stop when not needed, but also indulge ourselves in using this precious resource to water our lawns or wash our cars. Considering the ever increasing world population and their corresponding demand for water, no wonder that its amount is declining.

To either awaken or instil a sense of thrift in the minds of consumers, authorities ought to fine the instances when water safe to drink is squandered. Alas, awareness-raising measures leave a lot to be desired, should we compare their effectiveness with that of monetary fines. Not empty words, but a pecuniary burden can, therefore, spur individuals on to ensure taps are tightly closed and drinkable water is only used for the purpose.

Along with the blame of the general public for this escalating problem, that of industries should be admitted as well. Kleptocracy and water resources legislation working on paper only are in combination detrimental to our commitment to environmental sustainability, while being beneficial to companies with low social responsibility. These loopholes are, thus, likely to tempt unscrupulous businesses to overuse and misuse pure water to derive benefits naturally in the form of financial gains.

In this case, rigidly enforcing and tightening state sanctions against these perpetrators can serve as a powerful deterrent. State agencies should both subject industrial water management to meticulous scrutiny and prosecute those involved in wrongdoing. Having observed the presence of inescapable punitive repercussions for their misdeeds, any business owners would think twice before wasting water resources.

In conclusion, a careless attitude to drinking water and its wrong use are causing its decline. However, this problem can effectively be alleviated through government reforms.
