Mary Ann Schildknecht was taught to embroider by nuns while she was serving a two-year jail sentence in Milan. The psychedelic imagery on the top and skirt began as ink drawings on white cotton bed sheets. The artist used satin-stitch embroidery to entirely fill in her drawings with endless color.

"My fantasy was to be a stripper. It's just kind of exciting, and here you're got all the lights, and people are watching you like you're really important. And just kinda good feeling. I don't know if every girl has that fantasy - may be not. But I did. I've always been a free spirit, I think. So I moved into San Francisco, in a hotel above Trieste coffee shop there. I was just calling up every place, and eventually somebody would need a stripper. 'Cuz if I would have auditioned, they would never hired me. I had legs, but I'm kinda flat-chested. But I still wanted to do it. I would just wait until they were desperate, when they really needed somebody and before they saw me, right? They were desperate. And then I would do one set at one place - and then they'd get rid of me. So I called up another place, like the Condor, and I'd go, "Need a stripper? My name is Sharon. I danced in El Cid last night." If I'd said I was Mary Ann they'd go "No, we don't want you". I was Sharon one night, Judy the next. I think I danced at every club. But just once. So, you know, they were selling boobs. And here they have this girl up there with no boobs. Boo. They did not wanna see that."
