We see the rotation from tech / in particular chip stocks into other sectors potentially fading with Nvidia the driver for losses in the S&P 500 & Nasdaq 100 trading significantly higher today. After a sentiment driven sell-off, which I would also see as a healthy correction - we see calm return with also fundamentals not being changed from last week. We also saw increased volatility and high trading activity on Thursday & Friday before the Triple Witching. We are well positioned.


🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (+ 0.6%) rebounds lead by dip-buying in Nvidia (which we anticipated yesterday, re-buying the Nasdaq 100 at 19500. We generally see a lot of green in the Nasdaq 100 with about 80% of the components trading positively. Bank of America reiterated Nvidia as "BUY" - we expected more positive call from analysts for Nvidia.

🔹 Apple (+ 0.9%) opens well near $210.00. We set a rather tight TP ✅ @: 210.79 (and can widen to TP ✅ @: 211.49 in case we see initial strong gains that push Apple within the first 3-5 minutes into the range 210.50 - 210.70) as general gains in tech will likely lead to less defensive demand for Apple. Apple also benefits from a "BUY" rating from Evercore ISI.

🔹 Chevron (+ 0.2%) extend gains opening slightly higher and moving near the $160.00 we expected Chevron to test in the very short-term. Initial losses in oil prices earlier today and a slight rebound in the USD limited additional gains. We set a tight TP ✅ @: 159.64

We found the perfect re-entry into the Nasdaq 100 at 19500 after a mixed session in New York in which in particular further losses in the AI sector caused the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 to close lower - even with 9 out of 11 sectors in the green. We now see Nvidia nearly 1% higher in pre-market trading helping also the Nasdaq 100 to cut losses.

We update our Nasdaq positions - SL1 & TP1 for our initial position / SL2 & TP 2 for our re-entry. You can also choose to work with the same SL for both positions. We tighten our SLs (in-profit for our re-entry). The Nasdaq is hovering at the 19600 level - cutting it's yesterday's losses almost in half. The Nasdaq has room to stabilize / rebound when the AI sell-off cools down.

Gold continues to recover from Friday's heavy selling (currently at $2,334 / +0.55% for today) - we remain LONG. The move away from tech (or more specifically the chip high flyers; Nvidia is down 13% over the last three sessions) continued today, leading to mixed markets. Overall, we continue to see a cautious market, but 9 out of 11 sectors closed Monday positive in New York (Europe significantly higher), showing general optimism ahead of the important US PCE data due on Friday. We made the perfect NYSE "opening" trade today (again) with AAPL. Our re-entry is slightly out of the money.

► The rotation out of growth stocks (especially chip stocks) intensified and Nvidia closed at the day's low (near -6.5%). Positive analyst calls on Nvidia (though there was one today - from Jeferries with PT at $150 (from $130)) could lead to short-term dip buying.

► The losses on Nvidia & Co are very strong and currently look more likely to continue (which would pull the Nasdaq down further). We are therefore also working with a tight SL. Our entry position is down more than 1%.

► While the S&P 500 and especially the Nasdaq 100 are currently (still) in the red, we are seeing mixed markets and an overall healthy rotation out of the (too) hot chip stocks. We have seen stocks drive both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 to new records over the past week.

► Some of the unloved stocks and sectors - such as the energy sector - that have been severely underperforming are now finally catching up. The energy sector is also benefiting from the sharp rise in oil prices. Oil prices (WTI) have risen by more than 1 % over the course of the day and natural gas is currently trading 2.6 % higher (or 11 % higher in the last 30 days).

► Above all, the weakness in natural gas prices and the surge in short-term gains in AI/technology stocks have pulled money out of Chevron & Co.

► We see Chevron's oil and gas production rising, which is likely to increase further with the Chevron/Hess deal (narrowly) approved by Hess shareholders

► With global energy security threatened by recent geopolitical events - e.g. the deteriorating situation between Israel and Lebanon - and demand for energy only set to increase from here on, Chevron is also attractive thanks to increased production capacity. Chevron also has an attractive valuation compared to the S&P 500 average and pays an attractive dividend yield - which is becoming more important again due to shares that are already trading high after a strong performance in 2024.

► CVX is performing slightly worse than XOM today. We are positioning us LONG in Chevron (currently at ~158.75) and expect the oil and gas giant to rise back above $160.00 in the very short term.

► Technology plays no role in the FTSE 100 (at 1% weighting) in the energy, financials, consumer staples and industrials-heavy FTSE 100. These sectors are trading all significantly higher in New York today, benefiting from rotation out of AI chip stocks.

► We have seen the FTSE 100 continue to rise after the close thanks to strong gains in New York (outside of the tech sector) and now see a small dip back to (below) 8280 - where we are positioning us LONG in the FTSE 100.

►Data from the UK today showed that salaries for advertised jobs fell in May for the first time since October. Adzuna's calculations show that the average salary for an advertised job fell by 0.1% compared to the previous month - wage inflation is a major factor that has kept consumer price inflation elevated in the UK. The latest CPI data from the UK shows that overall inflation has reached the BoE target of 2% y-o-y. Hopes for BoE rate cuts remain intact.

► We continue to see European equities performing positively and also see more defensive sectors as well as energy and financials doing well.

► Nvidia continues to weigh on Wall Street - in stark contrast to most of the year, when Nvidia was the strongest driver for Wall Street and the Nasdaq 100 in particular. On Friday, Nvidia fell 3.2% and was the biggest drag on the S&P 500.

► After the sell-off at the end of last week, which was mainly due to the triple witching, i.e. the expiry of stock options, stock index options and stock index futures, the markets in New York stabilized again. Wall Street saw movements similar to the last triple witching on March 15 (when then was followed by a strong recovery in the following days).

► We saw a mixed Asian session and a strong European session, with the DAX in particular benefiting from hopes that Beijing might lower tariffs on large motor vehicles in return for the removal of planned EV levies on imports from the Asian country.

► We see a slight improvement in market breadth and most stocks across all sectors in the green in New York. We are buying the underperformance of the Nasdaq 100 at session lows and expect hopes for another cooling inflation report (PCE on Friday) to keep the markets optimistic.

Many (most!) market participants avoid trading near the triple witching (or prefer to pull their money out before), as rebalancing causes large fluctuations and high volatility - too nerve-wracking for most traders. It's much harder to trade (fundamentally) on a day like this. We did an exceptional job today - although unfortunately our gold position is deeply in the red, even though gold is not directly affected by expiring contracts. However, investors favored bonds and the USD after stronger than expected US economic data and all-time high housing prices. There was also a general "sell everything" mode today - not atypical for triple witching days (or the day before). We expect a strong recovery in the gold price in the coming week.

The markets continue to be very volatile - trading activity in S&P 500 stocks is 90% above the average of recent months. Data shows that the service sector in the US grew at its fastest pace in more than two years at the beginning of the month. Existing home sales fell for the third month in a row, house prices hit a record high in May. The stronger-than-expected US economic data overall led to a short-term rebound in yields (which is still weighing on the gold price).

We are securing profits with our AUD/USD. We are working with a tight TP. We expect demand for safe havens to increase in the second half of US trading today and in the run-up to the triple witching.

► However, we see a sharp overreaction here which was increased by fundamental headwinds as the hot housing data caused yields to flat out again (now flat for the day).

► We will see increased safe haven demand - from which also gold will benefit.

► We want to improve our entry in gold range $2,330 - $2,332.50 and expect gold to turn higher again and see technical support in the range $2,325 - $2,330. We see yields stabilizing - which also reduced the risk of gold falling much further.

► We see increased volatility today - you can trade slightly smaller to allow prices to move more.

► Our tight Nasdaq SL was triggered as European stocks gave back much of yesterday's gains and we continue to see a short term rebalancing where investors are taking profits from some of the stocks that have risen meteorically which and were supported by another massive push in AI/chip stocks. We are generally seeing a massive outperformance of mega caps which are moving further away from the general performance of the stock market. Market breadth has improved slightly, but money outflows from big tech outweigh gains in other sectors, with investors also using some of the money to position themselves in safer assets (such as bonds/gold or cash).

► Rebalancing is likely to continue and we will see more volatility ahead of the so-called triple witching this quarter, when equity futures and index option contracts expire on the same day - including many of the highly traded single stock options.

► We can position ourselves above our triggered SL at 19795 - 19850* SHORT. Although we could see further short-term swings, it is likely that continued cautious trading will weigh on the Nasdaq, which still has room for corrections. Both the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500 reached new all-time highs yesterday. Given the massive recent gains, further signs of profit taking may lead to additional (panic) selling.

► We see mixed markets. Overall, Asia-Pacific equities ended the day slightly higher, but Chinese equities continue to disappoint, hitting a four-month low as foreign investors continued to reduce capital amid economic uncertainty. We are also seeing some headwinds in commodities, with the energy sector also giving back some of yesterday's (and recent) gains, which weighed slightly (VIP ONLY). We buy the(VIP ONLY) mini dip to ~(VIP ONLY). We remain bullish (VIP ONLY).

► However, we expect the market to calm down and stabilize after Wall Street was dominated by profit taking in chip stocks. We see signs of a recovery. Nvidia is trading up to 3% higher in pre-market trading. In Europe, we are seeing losses, although these are mainly in the world's largest aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the German pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co.

► Yields on US Treasuries continue to fall as investors fled to safety due to the high volatility in the previous week. Hopes of interest rate cuts remain intact ahead of the important US PCE data on Friday, which should show that price pressure in the US is easing further.

Currency movements are also influenced by concerns over further currency intervention in Japan. ► The verbal intervention by Japan's top currency chief Masato Kanda, who reiterated on Friday that the government will take appropriate measures if needed, raises expectations of further intervention by the Bank of Japan to support the weak JPY. The yen weakness comes amid a continued divergence in yields between Japan and other major economies, including the US. Hawkish comments from the Fed and the fact that the BoJ has still not taken a clear path to reduce bond purchases led to further JPY weakness.

► During European trading, there was a significant short-term dip in the USD/JPY, which will add to concerns of further short-term swings in the JPY.

► A moderate rise in inflation is expected in Japan, while signs of disinflation have become more pronounced in the US in recent weeks.

Further selling in semiconductor stocks - especially Nvidia - continues to weigh on Wall Street and could continue for a while, but we see an overall improvement in market breadth. Last week's positive US economic data has slightly lowered expectations for a rate cut, but the outlook for solid economic growth remains intact. After a mixed week and a correction at the end of the week, the focus will now turn back to inflation data, which will be released on Friday with the important US PCE data. We see that the swap markets are still optimistic that there will be a rate cut in September - the probability of this is currently put at 65%. The hope that price pressures will continue to ease may be enough to maintain rate cut optimism. We see stable yields and a weaker USD at the start of the week, but still cautious trading.


🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (- 0.4%) continues Friday's selling and fell below 19700, again driven by losses in chip stocks (Nvidia, Broadcom, AMD, Qualcomm, Applied Materials, etc.). We expect an overall solid performance from big tech (except Nvidia) and improving market breadth, which should help stabilize Wall Street.


► Cautious trading in the tech sector should benefit Apple, which has also seen strong selling after a very strong performance since May, in which the tech giant benefited mainly from its over-hyped AI push. Even though Apple is lagging behind in AI integration, the additional revenue growth potential - especially in Apple's high-margin Apple Services division - remains very high.

► Developers and other AI innovators such as Meta, Google, OpenAI will now likely need to integrate their AI models/technologies into Apple Intelligence, as Apple and arguably the most important iOS ecosystem are the only keys to the lock of the world's 2.2 billion iOS devices and 1.5 billion iPhones. In the coming months, we are likely to see an explosion of generative, AI-driven apps that will be the key ingredients to Apple's recipe for success. Apple made its AI ambitions clear at its recent developer conference by announcing Apple Intelligence, announcing a partnership with ChatGPT/OpenAI and also confirming that it is in talks to further collaborate with Meta.

► Investment banks remain bullish on Apple and have recently raised their price targets - like Melius Research today, which raised its price target for Apple from $227 to $260.

► We buy the current dip in Apple and see a short-term rebound. Apple opens almost unchanged after additional selling shortly before the close on Friday. We are likely to see initial slight losses and may find entry in the $206.50 - $207.20* range.

❗️ European stocks edge higher amid political events & upcoming inflation data

► European stocks opened positively with traders brace for a week of political events and inflation data that may influence global interest rate outlooks. The Stoxx 600 Index rose by 0.4%. Key political events include the upcoming US presidential debate and the French legislative elections later this week. Additionally, Germany’s Ifo business climate index fell to 88.6, missing expectations of 89.7. Despite these factors, the German DAX rose by 0.35%.

► US markets remain cautious ahead of the Core PCE data and other key economic data releases later this week. The S&P 500 fell on Thursday & Friday due to increased caution ahead of the massive $5.5 trillion options expiry event known as "triple witching." Traders reassessed the sustainability of this year’s rally amidst high valuations and election uncertainties in Europe. US stock futures showed minimal changes today, with the S&P 500 up 0.2%, and Nasdaq up 0.15%. Investors are closely monitoring the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measures (Core PCE data), which may signal potential rate cuts.

► Most Asian equity benchmarks declined, with the notable exception of Japan, where stocks outperformed the region. The JPY fell below 160 / USD as officials indicated readiness to intervene to support the currency. 🔹 The Nasdaq 100 (+0.0%) is little changed for the day currently. It is likely that yesterday's rebalancing - including from the meteoric gains in AI stocks showing fatigue - will continue ahead of the triple witching. The Nasdaq 100 is benefiting from Apple's gains in pre-market trading - it's a typical Apple market today with a slight gain for "safety" but with investors remaining optimistic overall. Apple also received a $45 price target increase from Bernstein to $240.

🔹 Nvidia (- 1.8%) saw further profit taking. We have a small position in Nvidia, which we will close with a profit (in our SL). After the massive gains, Nvidia could see significantly more profit-taking.


► We made a great AMD SHORT trade against the market yesterday and expect the chip giant to face profit taking again after a very strong trade yesterday (thanks to a positive analyst call from Piper Sandler). AMD is strongly outperforming other chipmakers in pre-market trading and is currently trading slightly higher. We can re-enter AMD SHORT above our SL triggered yesterday: 162.25 - 162.75* range.

► I also expect further profit-taking in (VIP ONLY). The electric car manufacturer has been performing well recently as investors are very optimistic about its long-term prospects. Very poor sales figures(VIP ONLY) weighed on (VIP ONLY) yesterday (as did general profit-taking), but I see more headwinds ahead for (VIP ONLY)(VIP ONLY) despite improving macroeconomic conditions point to microeconomic demand issues rather than macroeconomic affordability needs of customers. In addition, the competitive threat is growing and (VIP ONLY) is losing market share in (VIP ONLY). The(VIP ONLY)g is very promising, but it will take time - the same goes for (VIP ONLY) plans - all of which will take years to have a big impact on (VIP ONLY) revenue growth and could further weigh on margins in the short term. (VIP ONLY) remains an extremely expensive stock. We are positioning ourselves SHORT (VIP ONLY)

► We see subdued market activity but signs of rising demand for safe havens, with investors increasingly investing in bonds (leading to a decline in yields that could increase further towards today's triple witching), which also supports gold.

► The precious metal is fundamentally supported by lower yields and the general trend towards "safer" investments in today's money flows.

► We now also see gold technically supported and in an upward momentum that could break through the recent profit-taking. There is also growing confidence from both retail investors and investment banks that gold will continue to perform well in 2024 - with a possible rise to the $2,500 to $2,600 range - making it more attractive than Wall Street, which is still near record highs.

► Gold is also benefiting from central banks starting to ease conditions. While the Fed remains cautious, swap markets continue to expect almost two Fed rate cuts in 2024. While I find this optimistic, recent inflation data from the US and Europe support hopes for rate cuts. Gold seems to be in a position to move towards $2,400 as early as next week - although there will be some setbacks, the bias is bullish for gold again. We buy the current mini-dip back to $2,362.
