❗️ Risk sentiment improves as markets welcome Trump's choice of Treasury Secretary; Banking sector leads gains

► The European stock markets are little changed, but are benefiting from optimism about the appointment of Scott Bessent as US Treasury Secretary. His call for a more prudent economic policy reassured investors and led to price gains in all major sectors. In US pre-market trading, bank shares led the gains. Banco BPM shares rose more than 2.5% (previously up as much as 9%) after UniCredit made a €10 billion ($10.6 billion) all-stock takeover offer, signaling consolidation in the European banking sector. However, UniCredit shares fell as investors were cautious about the financial implications of the takeover. Anglo American gained momentum in London after announcing the $3.78 billion sale of its steel coal business, showing progress in restructuring the mining company. Traders are now turning their attention to inflation and economic data around the world, particularly in the Eurozone later this week. German business climate and sentiment data has continued to deteriorate and fall short of expectations.

► US markets extended their upward trajectory as equity futures pointed to further gains. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 added around 0.5% amid renewed confidence in economic stability under Bessent’s leadership. The 10-year Treasury yield fell by six basis points to 4.34%, reflecting easing inflation fears and investor demand for safe-haven assets. Meanwhile, the DXY dropped significantly (+ 0.55%), reversing an eight-week rally fueled by expectations of aggressive fiscal policy under the Trump administration. This week, investors will scrutinize the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes and PCE inflation data to assess the likelihood of rate cuts in 2024.

► Asian markets were positive, boosted by the positive mood on Wall Street and the nomination of Bessent to the Treasury. Japan’s Nikkei 225 surged over 1%, driven by gains in export-heavy stocks as the JPY strengthened 0.7% against the USD. However, China’s markets lagged, with the Shanghai Composite falling after the People’s Bank of China kept its one-year medium-term lending facility (MLF) rate unchanged at 2%. This signaled limited new stimulus, disappointing investors hoping for stronger fiscal measures. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dipped 0.4%, reflecting regional economic uncertainties.

► Oil prices fell in light of geopolitical developments in the Middle East and no shocking developments in Ukraine. Israel announced that it is close to a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon's Hezbollah despite rocket attacks on both sides over the weekend, reducing the risk of further supply disruptions. WTI crude oil fell 0.3% to near $71/barrel. Gold fell more than 2% before finding support below $2,660.

It was a really outstanding week 📈, but unfortunately not an equally strong finish. Either I didn't read the fundamentals or overstated the impact - e.g. the horribly weak European economic data (which just weighed heavily on the EUR / influenced ECB interest rate expectations) or/and didn't read market sentiment very well. I'm clearly bullish on Wall Street, but it's still impressive how strong Wall Street finished Friday (and how much of a tailwind it gave the European markets). The US continues to show a very impressive outperformance.

Alphabet was not great - I even had my position still open - one could have closed better here.

Nice to see our GBP/CHF hit the TP (didn't look like it in early European trading). Boeing shot up today. We closed our DAX (from yesterday) very well and found a great entry into the Dow Jones.

You may have already closed our second DAX SHORT in the SL - but we are back/still SHORT and looking to see if Asia / Europe can keep up with Wall Street on Monday.

A very difficult market today, not quite following the fundamentals. Poor economic data in Europe, but still strong gains. Still a lot of USD safe haven demand, worries about geopolitical escalations over the weekend (very visible in gold and oil prices; oil in particular is overbought in the short term), but also strong US economic data which is putting Wall Street back into an upward momentum, especially as investors remain optimistic that Trump will see the performance of the S&P 500 as key to his performance as US President (and putting the US first).

We are tightening the TP for our DAX position here. The EUR/CHF position has barely changed - I would like to tighten the TP a little, although I think we have found a solid entry price.

► I was very confident that the GBP/CHF would rise back above 1.12000 this week - but in early European trading today it no longer looked like it would. However, the strong (VIP ONLY) weakness resulted in our GBP/CHF to still hit TP.

► The GBP is still somewhat oversold as the inflation outlook in the UK remains very uncertain. What is weighing on GBP is the generally very gloomy outlook for the UK economy, which is facing a sharp slowdown, a possible re-acceleration of inflation, impending tax hikes and likely continued or even worsening cash outflows and weak investment. Add to this the fact that the UK is facing a brain drain and a general shortage of skilled labor - it's really hard to be optimistic here.

► Nearly the same applies to the Eurozone, where the major economies, especially Germany and France, continue to show (almost) zero growth and weak political leadership.

► Worse-than-expected economic data from the Eurozone led to a very sharp decline of the EUR today (almost looked like a flash crash) as investors priced in further ECB rate cuts. The weak (VIP ONLY) ...

► The(VIP ONLY) performed even worse as investors assume that the (VIP ONLY) will cut interest rates further and possibly even (VIP ONLY) ...

► The (VIP ONLY) economy remains stable and inflation (VIP ONLY) to remain bearish and fall back to (VIP ONLY) in the near future - however, we set the TP ~65 pips below entry for the time being. We are therefore selling the spike that followed the dip.

► The (VIP ONLY) is also benefiting from the geopolitical tensions in Ukraine, which are having a greater impact on the (VIP ONLY)

► Despite today's (VIP ONLY) weakness and the continued bearish outlook for the (VIP ONLY) is up by more than 0.25 % today. We are selling.

We then saw some returning buying - which however, now exhausted. Markets look for guidance and found also another round of impressive US economic data - with US PMIs (composite which includes both service providers and manufacturers) advancing to 55.3 — the highest level since April 2022. Another display how strongly the US economy is outperforming the rest of the world.

We see profit taking in big tech intensifying with the Nasdaq 100 now trading back in negative territory.

We also update our DAX position - currently off-profit.

We took a completely counter-cyclical trade in the DAX yesterday, which closed well into profit.

We found an almost perfect entry, apart from slight additional profits in early European trading after yesterday's very strong positive momentum (which continued in New York trading).

Another round of weak European economic data, including worse-than-expected German GDP growth and German/eurozone economic data, as well as ongoing concerns about further Russian missile attacks (possibly also on Kyiv), pushed the DAX down significantly.

If you are still SHORT - close near ✅ 19100 (19060 - 19110). I expect further selling - but could see some buying from here.

► The DAX is a strong outperformer and is trading 0.9% higher, with further gains in the after-hours trading after a strong close. German equities were hardly affected by the losses in the technology sector after Nvidia's earnings forecast failed to meet some of the exaggerated (!) high expectations.

► The DAX also recovered impressively and closed 290 (almost 300) points above the day's lows - which is a lot.

► The DAX also benefited from the significant weakness of the EUR (with increasing concern about further escalations in Russia's war against Ukraine). Losses went very far with the EUR/USD down 0.6%– deep into the short-term oversold territory.

► Part of the tailwind for the EUR is in fact a headwind for Europe, in part because of the more volatile situation in Ukraine. It is likely that news will continue to come in of heavy Russian bombing or Ukrainian attacks on Russian military targets. Investors will be a bit more cautious tomorrow, too, because the weekend could bring more worrying news about the war in Ukraine.

► Europe also benefited from the recovery on Wall Street, which was led primarily by small/mid-cap stocks, showing that investors remain generally optimistic. We expect profit-taking in the Nasdaq at/above 20800 and in the DAX at around 19200.

We see high volatility, which has caused some additional profit taking - particularly pronounced in Alphabet - we went LONG here a bit too early. GOOGL should find support soon (below 165). We set a not too wide SL here. Qualcomm, on the other hand, initially saw significant price gains but then retreated back into our buy range.

We remain LONG in the Nasdaq and see dip-buying below 20500.

Our position in gold is well in the money - the current increased volatility in the market is positive for gold. We set an in-profit SL here. We currently see a slight resistance at 2670, but see gold well supported here from both a fundamental and sentiment perspective.

We see exactly what we expected – Nvidia's earnings report keeps the AI growth story (optimism) completely intact and sent stocks higher despite worsening geopolitical concerns. Yesterday we saw some panic selling (especially in Nvidia) – we did the opposite. Nvidia is now pointing to a positive open – currently up 2% (!). Wall Street is also benefiting from a stable USD, yields, some surprisingly dovish comments from Fed officials, and unemployment claims pointing to a slight cooling in the US labor market as unemployment claims continue to rise. However, the Nasdaq/Tech ran very hot in the pre-market, which is why we are NOT entering the NYSE Opening (LONG) – we still expect some profit taking first.



🔹 Boeing (+0.5%) continues to rise / outperform. We maintain our price target (149.34) for the time being.


► We buy Qualcomm, which fell by 6.5% yesterday and opens almost unchanged today at 154.50. Qualcomm is very attractively valued at the current price and a P/E ratio (fwd) of less than 15. Although Qualcomm's sales grew slower y-o-y than its competitors AMD, Broadcom and Nvidia (“every” company is growing slower than Nvidia), we still see rapid growth for the chipmaker. The reason for Qualcomm's slower sales growth is also because the chipmaker is more diversified - and also in industries such as WiFI modules, cell phones (and other IoTs), automotive, etc.

► I expect Qualcomm's revenue growth to increase as the chipmaker is also making progress in the PC business (which has been somewhat neglected due to the recent decline in sales in this industry) thanks to a strong partnership with Microsoft. Qualcomm has many additional sources of revenue that will come to fruition in the coming years - I therefore also see Qualcomm as very attractive in the medium to long term.

► Nvidia's strong earnings report provides a general tailwind for the chip sectors - with Qualcomm being particularly important in the area of AI chips in the mobile sector. We are buying the recent sharp fall in the share price.

► We also buy the strong underperformance of (VIP ONLY), which opens (VIP ONLY)% lower at around (VIP ONLY). Alphabet is under pressure as (VIP ONLY). I see this as a temporary (VIP ONLY). On a positive note, the (VIP ONLY), which would be much more (VIP ONLY) ...

While Nvidia was unable to push higher following a very strong quarter and a forecast which didn't meet (apparently) sky-high shadow expectations as well as some caution from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang that margins may fall a bit in the near term.

► We see a much reduced risk premium despite another heavy drone attack on Kyiv overnight - markets were concerned about further signs of escalation over the weekend - but the situation remains similar to Friday, leading to a reduction in the risk premium (visible in USD, gold and oil etc.). Hezbollah fired heavy rockets at Israel yesterday, causing minor damage near Tel Aviv after an Israeli airstrike killed at least 29 people in Beirut.

► Trump's choice of Scott Bessent as US Treasury Secretary was seen as a moderate choice. He will implement Trump's plans but is pro-market and would want to prevent a full-blown trade war with China. US President-elect Donald Trump has floated the idea of imposing tariffs of 60% on Chinese goods and at least 10% on all other imports, which would drive up prices for US consumers. Bessent has spent his career in finance, working for macro-investment billionaire George Soros and well-known short-seller Jim Chanos.

► While Bessent would also focus on imposing tariffs, spending cuts and trying to preserve the dollar's status as the world's reserve currency, I expect him to focus more on tax cuts and possible deregulation.

► We see lower yields and the USD losing some of last week's strong gains at the start of the week - actually positive for gold. Interest rate cut expectations for December are little changed at around 56%.

► We expect the gold price to remain bullish overall - even with a very good medium-term outlook. Last week it was reported that China has found $83bn worth of gold reserves in Hunan province - but the is limited as the extraction will take decades.

This part of the overview looks extremely good (congratulations!) - we have a success rate of 91.1% - which is a stunning accomplishment. Any percentage point over 85% (especially in our time frame and with the amount of trades we do) is extremely difficult - over 90% means you've been trading close to as best as it gets for a long period of time.

Boeing rallied very strongly today (one of the top performers) and closed 4.1% (!) higher. If you are still in, we expect further gains. ► The outperformance of the DAX is certainly surprising. We want to stay SHORT (if your SL is triggered, get back in at the same price). Trump optimism, which also received a tailwind from very good US economic data, helped Wall Street to close the week on a positive note - the S&P 500 has risen by around 1.5% this week (so far). However, we still expect some profit-taking in the last two regular trading hours.

► European markets, on the other hand, benefited from the EUR weakness and gains in the technology sector (in the DAX, for example, Zalando was the top performer of the day). After a positive close, the DAX rose even further despite today's Eurozone data (which could hardly be worse) thanks to the gains on Wall Street.

► The Eurozone economy surprisingly even fell into recession territory in November. The overall indicator (composite) for economic activity in the Eurozone fell below the expansion threshold of 50 points.

► In Europe, banks were the underperformers today - which shows that investors are acknowleding weak economy (and outlook) and interest rate cuts - the latter was also a tailwind today

► Nevertheless, the significant outperformance is still unusual, in particular due to China's weakness and the sharp rise in oil prices - we therefore remain SHORT.

🔹 Alphabet (- 1.0%) remains volatile and opens slightly lower again after a strong recovery from yesterday's very strong losses. We keep our SL 🔑 @: 164.93 - or may not be able to change it anyway (if set). If not set - you can give Alphabet a bit more room and/or close soon range 167 - 169.

🔹 Boeing (+ 0.15%) opens little changed after yesterday's negative performance.


► We see mixed markets in the US. Losses in Asia and Europe (which have recovered, though – we expect profit taking again at the end of the European session) have only a limited impact on Wall Street. We expect some profit taking in the second half of US trading, including some profit taking waves earlier on. However, risk sentiment in the US remains rather positive after the post-election hangover.

► Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General, is much more business- and tech-friendly, which could provide additional tailwinds in the short term. This is also good news for Alphabet, which currently has ‘issues’ with the DOJ.

► We will see some elevated volatility at the NYSE opening and want to see how Big Tech trades in the first 10 minutes before making a decision. I see Amazon's recent dip as an attractive buying opportunity, but we generally see Big Tech as being in the process of profit taking.

❗️ European stocks plunge after strong session / opening; China down sharply; USD, gold, Bitcoin extend gains

► European markets started positively into the session after yesterday's strong Wall Street performance, driven by gains in tech and real estate. However, investors were then surprised by sharp losses following more signs that the German/Eurozone economy remains in trouble and following the weak performance of the Chinese market. Notable performers included ASML, which led the rebound as sentiment improved following Nvidia’s late-session rally in the US Germany’s private sector activity showed signs of deepening contraction, with PMI data highlighting a sharp decline in business activity. France’s flash composite PMI also plunged, signaling the steepest contraction since January. Also German GDP growth data came in below expectations (at -0.3% YoY vs. -0.2% expected). These economic challenges fueled bets on further ECB rate cuts, boosting sovereign bonds across the region. Business activity in the UK also shrank more than expected and is back in contraction (<50) territory (at 49.9 down from 51.8 in October and vs. 51.8 expected).

► US stock futures traded mixed, reflecting uncertainty around market momentum. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 futures edged down. Meanwhile, the USD extended its gains, marking its eighth consecutive weekly rise. Strength in the USD was further supported by safe-haven flows amid continued geopolitical tensions in Ukraine, as both sides escalated their rhetoric and actions. The DXY is up 0.4% in US pre-market trading.

► Asian markets exhibited a mixed tone, with Japan’s Nikkei rising 0.84% on slower inflation and an expansion in the services sector. However, manufacturing activity continued to contract, highlighting uneven economic recovery. In China, the Shanghai Composite dropped 2.98% (!), pressured by ongoing economic uncertainty and weak investor confidence. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also fell, declining 1.89% amid losses in property and financial stocks. China worries remain fully in place.

► Oil prices are little changed, with WTI crude trading at $70/barrel, but pointing to further near-term gains, as geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine stoked supply concerns. Gold extended its rally into a fifth session, trading back above $2,700/oz. This is supported by safe-haven demand amid volatility in broader markets. Investors hedged against geopolitical uncertainty and currency fluctuations, as the metal retained its appeal even with the U.S. dollar's strength.

► Bitcoin surged near the $100,000 milestone. This is fueled by optimism surrounding a pro-crypto Trump administration. Reports suggesting Chris Giancarlo, an advocate of digital currencies, could take a leading regulatory role added to the bullish sentiment.

Above all, we immediately recognized the panic selling yesterday as such - as well as the actual tailwind after Nvidia (AI growth story remains intact + mega profits for Snowflake) - bought very well, closed well and then traded the resistance perfectly with the DAX (we would also have hit the Nasdaq SHORT well).

However, the panic selling in Alphabet went quite far. I remain optimistic that the panic reaction regarding a likely break-up process against Alphabet offers recovery potential and that this overall process will take a very long time (if at all). Alphabet will find a solution - even if it ends up being a spin-off (from Chrome).

Congratulations - we now have 17 (!) 🏆 successful index trades in a row (or 42 out of 43 - which is even more impressive) and have been trading indices - especially against the market - at an unbeaten level for months now.

PS: We can tighten our TP for our GBP/CHF position a bit - but see support near / below 1.11500 and the pair moving back above 1.12000.

Qualcomm triggered our SL (for a still very nice profit). It's a bit unfortunate as we could have closed better but we see a mixed chip sector. I am happy here with taking the profit home - this was a very good trade and an excellent entry range. If you want to stay LONG in QCOM - work with a wider SL to not get it closed tomorrow in a potential -0.5% opening.

Alphabet on the other hand recovered strong and found indeed support below $165.00 as we expected. We expect Alphabet to remain in recovery mode. I tighten the SL here.

You can also update our DAX position. We traded against the market and hit the turnaround perfectly. We expect slight additional losses in early Asian trading and overall more profit taking tomorrow.

► We were expecting profit-taking after the NYSE opening - and it did indeed come, and very clearly - it even went a little too far. The losses are much more pronounced in the tech sector than in the broad market - Nvidia loses pre-market gains and Amazon, Meta and Alphabet weigh on the Nasdaq.

► We see the S&P 500 slightly in the red and the more defensive Dow Jones still in the green. The more risk-averse Russell 2000 is still up ~0.6%, with most of the losses concentrated in the large caps.

► We now find a good re-entry here now / soon (even at below 20500 now).

► We see the USD facing a slight headwind after yesterday's strong gains (as we expected) and growth, technology and risk-sensitive stocks are also benefiting from a slight cooling in yields (also thanks to signs that the US labor market is softening slightly).

► We expect gold to remain in demand despite the recent sharp rise in US government bond yields and the 10-year yield near the key psychological level of 4.5%. Higher yields are putting pressure on the stock market, which has performed so well this year and since Trump's re-election. Higher yields do increase the opportunity cost of owning gold, but equity market headwinds and general weakness in European and Chinese markets make gold generally attractive. We see US Treasury yields and the USD almost flat for today - despite Russia firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (at Ukraine) overnight.

► The gold price rose to its highest level since November 11 an hour ago and is now down to just over $12/oz. We can buy this mini dip.

► Gold is benefiting strongly from a general deterioration in risk sentiment. The mixed reaction at Nvidia after the good results for the third quarter, which, however, did not meet the expectations of some investors (in terms of guidance), also suggests that it will become increasingly difficult to continue the rally. Nevertheless, we now see the Nasdaq clearly in positive territory and our Nasdaq 100 well in profit.

► Interest rate cut expectations for December are at almost 50%, close to the minimum of the last few days. At the same time, however, there have been dovish comments from Fed officials such as New York Fed President John Williams and Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Susan Collins, both of whom have said that further rate cuts are necessary and indicate that the FOMC is still cautiously optimistic that inflation will continue to cool in the near term.
