โบ Risk sentiment is improving at the start of the week and the equity markets are also trying to regain positive momentum after last week's heavy losses. Commodity prices are mixed, with precious metals falling sharply as concerns over geopolitical escalation eased. Tehran played down Israel's retaliatory drone strike against Iran to prevent a regional escalation. The (VIP ONLY) will benefit from (VIP ONLY) ...
โบ The currency markets remain USD-driven and USD demand persists as yields also continue to rise. In the short term, however, I see limited upside potential for the USD.
โบ There is a Bank of Japan meeting at the end of the week, but I very much doubt that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates any further yet after ending the negative interest rate policy at the last meeting in March. Even though there is likely to be hawkish rhetoric, the JPY remains weak and has more downside potential in the short term. The Bank of Japan will need to raise rates further later this year to support the JPY - rhetoric alone will not be enough. Government-backed yen purchases could at least support the JPY in the short term - but it is unlikely that the BoJ will do so before the upcoming interest rate decision.

โ๏ธStocks try to regain positive momentum after selloff; Earnings in focus this week
โบ European stocks and US futures climbed as investors shifted their focus from Middle East tensions to upcoming corporate earnings and economic data. The Stoxx Europe 600 index gained 0.25%, trying to regain positive momentum after last weekโs losses. The U.K.โs FTSE 100 climbed 1.1%, while Franceโs CAC 40 was 0.1% higher and Germanyโs DAX was up 0.3%. Prosus NV in Europe saw a significant share price increase following a rally in Tencent Holdings, sparked by the successful launch of a major mobile game.
โบ In the U.S., futures indicated a positive opening for Wall Street following last week's downturn, the worst since March 2023. The market's mood has improved as geopolitical risks ease as predicted by our Chief Analyst Robert Lindner, allowing investors to turn their attention to fundamental economic indicators and corporate earnings. High-profile earnings reports from tech giants such as Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet this week are particularly in focus. German software giant SAP is scheduled to report today. These results are expected to heavily influence the S&P 500, with investors hoping that strong earnings can sustain its recent growth trajectory despite concerns over rising bond yields. Additionally, economic indicators such as US GDP and PCE Price data, the Fedโs preferred inflation measure, are set to be released this week and will be closely watched for further clues on monetary policy directions.
โบ Asian markets saw varied performances; while Japanese stocks rose by 1% thanks to a depreciating JPY boosting exporter companies, Chinese shares slightly declined despite the PBOC's decision to keep interest rates steady. The stability in Chinese policy rates comes as the country shows signs of economic recovery, evidenced by a robust manufacturing PMI. However, the broader Asian market remains cautious, reflecting mixed signals over regional economic health and potential policy shifts.
โบ On the commodities front, both oil and gold prices dropped as demand for safe-haven assets waned. Many investors jumped into oil and gold on Friday, but SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner warned of a possible weak opening as he expected the situation in the Middle East not to deteriorate over the weekend - exactly what we are seeing now. WTI crude oil (spot price) is trading at around $81/barrel, while gold is trading at around $2,355/oz.

CRM hit our SL today in overall broad selling - although Salesforce didn't slide as much as other tech giants - potentially also because Salesforce in not part of the Nasdaq 100.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Nasdaq (NAS100 / US100) ๐บ๐ธ
โบ Yesterday's Nasdaq position was closed in our SL today - but was back in profit for a short time. The swings in the Nasdaq today (or even more so the swings in the big tech) showed how much the market shunned riskier / typical growth stocks in a flight to safety given the ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and gradually diminishing expectations for rate cuts.
โบ I believe that tensions in the Middle East will be contained and do not expect further escalation over the weekend. So we still have the opportunity to buy the dip (here in the Nasdaq 100) as growth investors in particular favored a cautious stance before going into the weekend. Too cautious - especially given a very strong Q1 earnings report from Netflix and the world's largest chipmaker TSMC, which also gave a positive outlook given the strong demand for (AI) chips. TSMC is still trading 3.3% lower in New York (and closed 6.7% lower in Taiwan - almost absurd).
โบ We see an oversold market and are getting back into the Nasdaq. We also want to stay LONG in Meta, Netflix and Nvidia.
โบ Nvidia has now given up an additional percent after further profit taking and some technical selling below $800.00 after our position was already deep in the profit earlier today. We can buy the dip in the Nasdaq here near today's lows (17070 - 17110).
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 6 - 8 (600% - 800%) when trading the Nasdaq (NAS100).

โ ๏ธ Volatile
โบ Not the re-entry we were looking for after buying the first dip today (and closing our gold position at a profit), but we expect further gains for gold as investors become more cautious ahead of the weekend and in the second half of US trading - as evidenced by a rotation from growth stocks to more defensive stocks.
โบ We may buy further dips in equities/indices later as we do not expect further escalation between Iran and Israel over the weekend as both countries have no interest in escalating the conflict and potentially triggering a war in the region. Nevertheless, the markets are now acting more cautiously again as we have predicted.
โบ We enter gold at $2,390 and expect further buying towards $2,400 - a level at which gold has always encountered resistance recently (especially in the narrow range of $2,395 - $2,400), as it did 30 minutes ago with renewed short-term profit-taking.

๐ ROBโS DAILY UPDATE ๐
โผ๏ธ Stock markets recovered as concerns over Israel-Iran conflict cooled again
We keep it shorter today as we continue to observe the Israel-Iran situation. I am also speaking with contacts of mine in the US and Tel-Aviv to get information before reported in the media - if possible.
We see that Wall Street recouped their early losses. Also oil and gold, which initially spiked fell - even below levels before the alleged Israeli strike in Iran - which we see as a market overselling after initially selling the heightened concerns of a further escalation in the Middle East. Iranian media downplayed the impact of the Israeli attacks - both sides generally don't use further escalating language in an attempt to contain the conflict to become a war, with also regional power, as well as Western nation trying to ease the situation from further escalating.
Also Treasury yields reversed much of the initial move that drove the 10-year yield down 14 basis points after Israel launched a retaliatory attack on Iran less than a week after Tehran's missile and drone strikes. An Iranian military official signaled that Tehran did not feel compelled to respond to the blasts, which US officials said were caused by Israeli attacks. Also the USD gave back some of earlier gains although movements have been relatively moderate.
However, the attacks can also not be ignored. A shadow-war has become at least a partially hot conflict with now both sides directly attacking each other. I thus expect concerns to rise again later today and ahead of the weekend with gold likely rising back into the $2,390 - $2,400 range.
Headwinds on Wall Street in recent days came in particular from strong US economic data and hawkish comments from Fed officials - both reduced the market's expectations for rate cuts this year. Minneapolis Fed chief Neel Kashkari said that the Fed may keep rates on hold throughout the year.
While we saw stocks recovering now investors will be discouraged to make bold bets - although strong growth from Netflix in Q1 sets a general positive tone for upcoming US big tech earnings reports - even as Netflix itself is trading lower on a rather disappointing Q2 forecast. Given Netflix' very strong Q1, however, it's likely that the streaming giant will recover some of the pre-market losses.
We also saw oil prices falling back to multi-weeks lows. It's hard to imagine that investors want to old SHORT positions in oil or gold over the weekend given that it can't be ruled out that geopolitical risks are out of the picture now.
๐ฐ FREE VIP SIGNAL ๐ฏ
BUY NOW ๐ผ WTI (USOIL) ๐ข (spot)
โบ We are also positioning us LONG in oil as WTI (spot price) has fallen back to $81.10, close to yesterday's lows (~$81.8 for the May contract).
โบ Israel has carried out a limited military strike against Iran and is currently assessing the effectiveness of the strike and the damage caused. Investors are apparently relieved that Israel did not choose a harsher response to Iran's recent attack on Israel.
โบ Oil prices initially rose sharply, but gave up the gains completely (and more) and slid more than 3%. Some of the relief selling was then accompanied by "panic" selling due to fears that oil prices would fall much further (towards $80.00/barrel // or $81.00 for the May contract).
โบ We see oversold conditions in oil as investors are also concerned about the outlook for the global economy, while expectations are rising that interest rates will remain "higher-for-longer". However, we are seeing positive signs from the global economy as growth is accelerating in most parts of the world and consumer sentiment is improving.
โบ Although Israel could certainly have reacted more harshly, we must acknowledge that both countries have now directly attacked each other. The shadow war that has been going on for years has not gotten any better - it has become a hot conflict. Therefore, the oil reaction - which assumes that the situation has now improved - went too far for now.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual lot size by ~ 0.6 - 0.8 (60% - 80%)* trading WTI (USOIL) / CRUDOIL - [VT Markets / PU Prime / Markets / Libertex] *multiply by 10 when trading at Admiral Market / Markets WebTrader / *multiply by 1000 when trading at Tickmill. โ ๏ธ The May-Futures Contract is currently ~$0.70 above the spot price.

SmartTrader Insights: Friday Markets Wrap ๐
๐ Friday, April 19
โ๏ธ Tensions in the Middle East, concerns about high rates for longer continue to affect risk sentiment, equities & commodities
โบ European markets are poised for a weekly loss as escalating tensions in the Middle East and weigh on investor sentiment. The Stoxx 600 index declined by 0.6% amidst rising geopolitical risks and concerns about rates staying higher-for-longer in the US with high inflation persisting. In the UK, retail sales showed a modest year-over-year increase of 0.8%, signaling some resilience in consumer spending. Conversely, Germany reported a 2.9% annual drop in producer prices, highlighting deflationary pressures within the manufacturing sector.
โบ In the US, the markets reacted cautiously with Treasury yields plummeting following a retaliatory strike by Israel on Iran, with the 10-year yield falling as much as 14 basis points. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures dipped by 0.4% and 0.6% respectively, influenced by the Federal Reserve's latest communications suggesting that rate cuts might not be as imminent as hoped as well as mixed earnings reports and other geopolitical concerns. Meanwhile, Netflix exceeded expectations with a significant jump in subscribers, although its shares dropped slightly in after-hours trading, reflecting the complex sentiment currently driving the market. While Q1 has been again a very strong quarter for Netflix, the streaming giant gave a rather disappointing Q2 revenue forecast.
โบ Asian markets felt the tremors of Taiwan's significant earthquake, impacting operations at key semiconductor facilities and instigating a broader market retreat. Japan's Nikkei index fell significantly by 2.66%. The region's anxieties were further compounded by Japan's consumer inflation adjustments and heightened vigilance against JPY fluctuations.
โบ Commodities experienced volatility with oil prices initially surging past $86/barrel before settling at $82/barrel as tensions appeared to stabilize momentarily. Gold prices maintained their ascent, currently trading at $2,380/oz after also temporarily rising above $2,400 reflecting sustained demand for safe-haven assets amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
โบ SmartTrader Chief Analyst Robert Lindner believes that Israel's retaliatory strikes could be seen as moderate. The markets have priced in an Israeli retaliation, which means that the current strikes (depending on whether more follow) could have a positive effect on risk sentiment. This is because the response could have been more severe. Ultimately, the risk of war between Israel and Iran will be assessed and whether this is becoming more likely.

Netflix did it again!
EPS: $5.28 vs. $4.52 expected
Revenue: $9.37 billion vs. $9.28 billion expected
Total memberships: 269.6 million compared to 264.21 million expected - that's again nearly 10 million in additional subscribers. Or ~ 10 million new subscribers vs. 4.59 million expected
The company posted revenue of $9.37 billion for the quarter, up from $8.16 billion in the year-ago quarter. Both revenue, and subscriber growth is very impressive.
STILL (!) we currently see Netflix ~2.5% lower in after-hours trading. It's hard to imagine that investors are not very positive on these numbers though. 3/7 - (4 open positions)
A very difficult day on which we overtraded a bit - or actually found good entry positions that we should have secured in profit earlier. In particular because we understood the market sentiment very well and assumed a flight to safety (including profit-taking) towards NYSE closing - which happened then (more than I expected in growth stocks).
As we do not expect the situation in the Middle East to deteriorate any further, we did not enter the weekend with any oil or gold positions. Overall, the market was very nervous and the move away from growth stocks led to panic-like profit-taking. We expect risk sentiment to improve at the start of next week - although we are currently seeing very negative momentum. This week's losses were the worst for the Nasdaq 100 since November 2022 and with 6 consecutive negative closes the longest losing streak since December 2022.
You can update your Nasdaq 100 position and work with a not-too-wide SL to limit potential losses in case the situation in the Middle East worsens or the rhetoric changes towards further escalation (which we don't expect).
Enjoy your weekend!

โบ We see further panic selling (especially in growth/chip stocks) towards the NYSE close. We could buy a lot here, but we are already positioned for a rebound and against the expectation that geopolitical tensions will continue to escalate. Concerns that the still volatile situation between Israel and Iran could escalate again was one of the main reasons for the sharp flight to safety today - but is overpriced.
โบ Concerns about a possible war in the Middle East add to fears that the Fed may not cut rates again in 2024 - although swap markets are currently still pricing in a 65% chance of a first Fed rate cut in September.
โบ We do not want to make any further dip purchases (more assets) here - although we see attractive entry opportunities - for example in Alphabet, Amazon or AMD - in big tech alone. The losses are mainly concentrated in the growth sector - the Dow Jones is actually currently trading 0.3 % higher one hour before the close.
โบ However, we are improving our average entry in Nvidia and can (re)buy at session lows ~$762 - 765* and Meta - but don't overtrade / if your position is closed, you can BUY Meta again at / slightly below $480**. We also want to stay LONG in Netflix, which has moved back near the lows. We expect a rebound in tech stocks on Monday.
โบ This week was the worst week for the Nasdaq 100 since November 2022.
โบYou can also improve your entry into the Nasdaq 100 by buying a small position at 17000***.

โบ We expected a flight to safety before the weekend, but it has been more severe than I expected in equities, especially growth and large technology stocks - with very heavy selling. The top 12 stocks in the Nasdaq 100 (Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Broadcom, Alphabt, Costco, Tesla, Netflix and AMD) are all trading deep red - in short-term oversold territory / multi-week lows.
โบ We remain LONG in Meta - which has fallen further (you can tighten your SL to ๐ 478.89 or keep it wider; we expect a rebound) and also expect that the strong overselling of Netflix on Monday may lead to a strong rebound (provided geopolitical tensions do not intensify). We are also now buying Nvidia's sharp dip of nearly 5% and may enter below $805 ($802 - $805*) - the lowest level since March 1 and a decline of more than 13% from April highs.
โบ We expect support at the key $800 level. Investment banks and analysts remain very bullish on Nvidia. TSMC, Nvidia's main chip manufacturer, reported a very good quarter and gave a good outlook due to continued strong demand for (AI) chips.

We have seen two overreactions in oil today. The first was after Israel attacked Iranian targets - which is absolutely understandable given the uncertainty (typical reaction). But then we also saw the heavy selling that pushed the oil price even below pre-attack levels - an oversell.
We bought the dip almost perfectly and are now seeing oil rise back above the level before the Israeli attack. We assume that investors will want to return to safety towards the end of today's trading day or this week - good for oil, but also for gold. We have traded gold for the same reason. Our gold position has already been closed in TP (would also have hit our TP at 2387.43).

We saw a strong overreaction in stocks - although investors had to still figure out the severity of the Israeli attack on Iranian targets. Our Nasdaq 100 fell out of profit but completely recovered back to 17400.
At the same time, we saw also a strong reaction in oil and gold and an overreaction in the selling - with both gold and oil even falling below levels before the strike.

โบ We saw a significant reaction on the markets after the media reported that Israel had attacked targets in western Iran. Oil and gold rose sharply - while risk-sensitive assets were sold. The reaction has certainly now almost completely reversed.
โบ Iran is playing down the scale of the incident. This may be out of pride, as neither side wants to admit that a large-scale attack has (successfully) taken place, but in reality there do not appear to have been any massive explosions in or around Isfahan.
โบ We have seen an overall very limited attack in Iran, which Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for. Both sides, Israel and Iran, seem to prefer de-escalating statements, as neither side is interested in escalating the conflict.
โบ The gold price also rose sharply at first, but then lost all its gains and traded now below $2,380 - where we closed yesterday in our TP.
โบThe real question is: has the situation between Israel and Iran improved or worsened? The situation remains tense and there is a risk of further escalation. I currently see no improvement in the situation between the two countries. Even if the markets now see Israel's very limited reaction in a positive light, it is difficult to say that tensions between the two countries have eased.
โบ We are buying gold here which we saw now falling down to $2,372.50 finding support before $2,370. We believe that further news could emerge during the course of the day that could heighten concerns about an escalation in tensions. There will also be typical Friday buying with concerns that the situation could deteriorate over the weekend.

Very strong performance over the last three days - especially considering the nervous markets with mixed movements / mostly sideways markets - very difficult to trade. Congratulations! We closed almost all positions from yesterday deep in profit and made excellent US index trades today. Netflix reported very strong Q1 earnings today, which should keep sentiment positive tomorrow (even though Netflix is currently trading in the red in after-hours trading - partly due to a cautious guidance).
Good night ๐บ๐ค
Robert
Netflix will talk about its plans to partner with TKO Group Holdings to bring WWE to the platform during the earnings call. The company has recently hinted that it plans to bring more live sports offerings. Investors seem skeptical of this move as it would have an immediate negative impact on profits (due to licensing fees, etc.).
However, it is hard to imagine that Netflix's plans are so scary that they overshadow the (once again) excellent Q1 numbers, including strong revenue and subscriber growth.
Netflix shares are currently down 2.1% in after-hours trading.

โ ๏ธ High Risk; Before Earnings Report (today; after the bell)
โบ We do it the other way around. We have found the perfect entry into the Dow Jones at 37700 and have an in-profit SL. We are now also entering the Nasdaq 100 (near the daily low). Earlier today we did it the other way around.
โบ We see the Nasdaq not only near the session low, but also at its lowest level since February 21. Netflix's earnings report will be important as it is the first major US tech company to report.
โบ In any case, I expect Netflix to beat expectations - but it is questionable how strong this "beat" has to be for Netflix to benefit significantly.
โบ Netflix has seen huge subscriber growth in recent quarters as the streaming giant has had great success with its password crackdown (Crackdown on Sharing). The measure has resulted in many more "new" subscribers than I would have expected more than a year ago when Netflix labeled the password crackdown as part of its growth plan.
โบ The increase in subscribers will probably not be as strong as in Q4 - as much of the future growth has been brought forward. I still expect growth to be higher than expected. Incidentally, Netflix Q1 reports have historically often been significantly better than expected.
โบ The streaming competition is also disappointing - after initial strong growth, none of them have been able to put Netflix under serious pressure. On the contrary, many of the companies that wanted to become independent are now granting licenses to Netflix again - Netflix is the clear winner.
โบ Netflix has also returned to very impressive revenue and especially FCF growth. It's extremely hard to predict what Netflix will do after the earnings report - but given the recent slide in share price (Netflix is down 1% even today) and some pessimism for the current earnings season, I see upside potential again.
โบ It's an optional trade with high risk โ ๏ธ. If you think a 70/30 chance is good enough for you, then take it. Otherwise, just buy the dip in the Nasdaq 100 here and you're on the slightly safer side.

โบ We saw heavy profit-taking again as concerns about no interest rate cuts and even possible rate hikes returned and also pushed yields up again. In particular, comments from Fed Bank of New York President John Williams, who, when asked if rate hikes were possible, said that this was "not" his "baseline expectation" - but added that "it is possible". Another round of strong US economic data (today) also further lowered rate cut expectations.
โบ Cyclical / growth stocks saw the most losses, with chip stocks also losing earlier gains and trading (mostly) back in the red.
โบ We set our SL for the Nasdaq 100 just in time to secure large gains. The Nasdaq 100 (17400), the Dow Jones (37700) and above all the S&P 500 (5000) are at technically important levels. We are buying the dip in the Dow Jones here (near/at 37700*), as some of the most important components in the Nasdaq 100 have even more potential for correction (such as Nvidia, Meta, Tesla, AMD).
