๐ SmartTrader Insights: Wednesday Markets Wrap ๐
๐ Wednesday, May 1
โ๏ธ Risk-off mood dominates in holiday-thinned trading sessions ahead of Fed decision
โบ European markets experienced subdued activity as most European markets closed for Labor Day, with the Stoxx 600 marginally down by 0.1%. This slight decline reflects caution among investors ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision. The automotive sector struggled, contributing to the overall stagnant market mood, despite some positive / improving economic data from the region signaling recovery.
โบ In the US, futures on the S&P 500 indicated a potential continuation of the recent downturn (dropping 0.2%), influenced by data supporting the likelihood of enduring high US interest rates. The market's attention is fixed on the Federal Reserve's decision later today, with anticipation building around potential statements on interest rate policies. Notably, Amazon's recent earnings report showed strong cloud unit sales which contrasted with its lukewarm revenue forecast, impacting sentiments around tech stocks. Amazon is trading at 2% higher in pre-market trading. The USD gained further strength, affecting commodities and emerging market currencies as investors speculate on continued high rates in the US. This shift has seen Treasury yields stabilize after significant previous gains, underscoring the market's wary stance.
โบ Asian markets were largely in the red, with Japanโs Nikkei 225 retreating after facing its worst month since December 2022. This regional downturn mirrors global concerns about persistent high interest rates and economic uncertainty, influencing a broader risk-off sentiment among investors.
โบ Oil prices continued their downward trajectory, with WTI Crude oil trading at around $80.5/barrel, as eased geopolitical tensions in the Middle East reduced immediate supply risks. Meanwhile, gold prices stabilized at $2,286/oz after dropping yesterday. The market's cautious stance is also visible in the cryptocurrency sector, where Bitcoin saw a significant drop to $57,500 following a disappointing reception to a new ETF launch in Hong Kong.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Dow Jones (US30) ๐บ๐ธ
โ ๏ธ volatile
โบ We see some heavy selling at the end of NYSE trading - led by Amazon ahead of its earnings report (hopefully not insider selling / more likely panic selling).
โบ We buy the sharp drop of almost 550 points in the Dow Jones - which closes the month down more than 4.5% - worst month since 2022. We see the Dow Jones underperforming the other US equity futures this month (although the Nasdaq recorded sharper losses today).
โบ We see the Dow Jones in short-term oversold territory. We are getting into the Dow Jones here near / slightly below 37800. Amazon has strongly beaten expectations but showing little reaction (for now). This is the immediate reaction - good enough for us to enter the Dow Jones.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 3 - 4 (300% - 400%) trading the Dow Jones (US30).

โ ๏ธ Volatile; Increased Risk; Earnings Report (after NYSE closing)
โบ We re-enter Amazon ahead of the earnings report and benefit from the current sales in the growth sector (which, however, have also pushed our Tesla LONG into our SL). We can even get in on Amazon below our entry yesterday and more than 1% below our triggered in-profit SL. We buy Amazon here (range $178.60 - $179.00).
โบ Amazon has shined in recent earnings reports, even as Alphabet and Meta have shown weakness in some metrics.
โบ We've seen strong momentum in digital ad revenue (as reported by Meta and Alphabet) and will likely see similar numbers from Amazon, which includes (for the first time) Prime Video Ads. I also expect strong growth from AWS and a strong forecast for Amazon's AI implementations.
โบ I also see significant upside potential for Amazon - possibly similar to Alphabet.
โบ The biggest risk could be increased costs due to the massive investments in live sports and Amazon's AI structure.
โบ Amazon has significantly outperformed earnings expectations in the last five earnings reports.

BUY NOW ๐ผ WTI (USOIL) ๐ข (spot)
โบ We are buying the very sharp dip in oil prices as investors are preparing for a more hawkish stance from the US Federal Reserve, which could further lower expectations for interest rate cuts in 2024. We are also seeing this in the USD, yields and currently in the gold price, which is currently trying to find support at $2,300.
โบ A significant reduction in the risk premium in view of a possible ceasefire in the Middle East, which could ease political tensions in the region, has also weighed on oil prices. However, public statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seem to indicate that the ceasefire will not last long, reducing the chances of an agreement between Israel and Hamas. "The idea that we will halt the war before achieving all of its goals is out of the question (..) We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate the Hamas battalions there โ with or without a deal, in order to achieve the total victory," said Netanyahu at a forum of hostage families an hour ago.
โบ WTI also crossed above its 50-day moving average, leading to some technical selling.
โบ However, the selloff went far - too far. We buy the drop below $81.00 here (spot price / June contract)

We secure nice profits with our USD/JPY. We continue to see upside potential in the pair, but any short-term selling could lead to a larger dip. We set a SL and give the pair room to rise further. We found a strong entry - just before the breakout that we expected.
Market sentiment improved post NYSE opening (for now) which also resulted in the sideways movement of the pair now (after initial USD gains / more JPY weakness)
๐ ROBโS DAILY UPDATE ๐
โผ๏ธ Stock traders on hold / more cautious ahead of AMZN report & Fed decision
On the last trading day of April - a negative month - and ahead of further important earnings reports - such as Amazon (today after the market closes) and tomorrow's Fed interest rate decision on a day when many markets around the world will be closed for a public holiday - equity traders are holding back or becoming more cautious for the time being.
Hotter-than-expected US employment cost data has reinforced expectations that the Fed will scale back its own rather optimistic rate cut forecasts and that Fed Chairman Jerome Powell could reduce the outlook to two rate cuts in 2024. The employment cost index, which measures wages and benefits, rose by 1.2%, the most in a year, beating all estimates. The swap markets have already adjusted to fewer rate cuts than at the last FOMC.
I do not expect the Fed to take a much more hawkish stance - especially not more hawkish than the market expects anyway - but concerns that the Fed will address stubborn inflation, the tight labor market, wage inflation and still strong consumption are increasing and could weigh on risk assets and bonds in the short term and support the USD. We see already short-term USD support at the moment.
We have another busy day of earnings reports behind and ahead of us, which have been rather mixed in European trading. In particular, earnings from European car manufacturers were disappointing. However, I don't expect much panic selling - earnings season has been too positive overall so far and with the strong earnings reports from Microsoft and Alphabet in the previous week (as well as strong gains from Tesla and Apple), Wall Street is likely to see another sideways move - but unlike yesterday, where the positive side prevailed, it is likely to be a little more cautious / negative today. I expect investors to be optimistic about Amazon's upcoming earnings report.
The stronger USD and higher yields have weighed on commodity prices, including gold which has fallen back into the $2,300 - $2,310 range. However, given the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming earnings reports and the Fed's outlook, the gold price is likely to find support again in the short term, depending on the extent of fears that the Fed could adopt a hawkish stance, which in turn would help the USD / hurt gold in the short term.
The JPY gained briefly overnight, but is now weakening again as the Japanese authorities are unlikely to announce whether or not interventions have already taken place.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Gold (XAU/USD)๐ฅ
โบ A stronger USD and concerns from some investors about a potentially more hawkish Fed stance (tomorrow) created headwinds for commodity prices, including gold. We also see US Treasury yields moving higher again (after recent decline) as the market is pricing in higher rates for a longer period ("higher-for-longer"). While it is likely that Powell will push back rate cut hopes somewhat and talk of two rate cuts in 2024 (rather than three), the swap markets have already priced this in anyway.
โบ We also see a reduction in the risk premium for gold with the hope that the conflict in the Middle East may ease as the US is pushing hard for more diplomacy and a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
โบ As uncertainty increases towards the end of the day and some important earnings reports are due or have already been released, including rather disappointing earnings from European car manufacturers, gold should be able to recover somewhat from the current 1% decline and during US trading.

We did not trade excessively today as traders did not want to make any major bets ahead of the important earnings reports and the upcoming Fed's interest rate decision / monetary policy outlook. We therefore saw mainly sideways movement, as we had expected. Overall, investors remain optimistic ahead of Amazon's earnings report tomorrow and equities saw some pre-closing gains today. Tesla posted its best daily performance since March 2021 today. Equity markets ended Monday with mixed results but overall positively. Dow Jones (+0.4%), S&P 500 (+0.3%), Nasdaq 100 (+0.4%).
๐ฐ OPTIONAL PENDING ORDER ๐ฏ
PENDING ORDER ๐ผ USD/JPY
๐ผ151.626
โ ๏ธ Increased risk; 2/3 trading size
โบ We may open a pending order if the Japanese government confirms overnight that it has intervened in an attempt to stabilize the slipping currency. There have already been strong moves in the JPY overnight, which hit its weakest level in 34 years at 160.245 per dollar in the Asian morning. The yen jumped from 159.5 per dollar to 155.2 in just an hour or so.
โบ A similar move could occur if the government confirms that it has asked banks and/or the Bank of Japan to buy yen to prop up the weak Japanese currency.
โบ A possible confirmed intervention could send the dollar down another 3-7 yen - although it would likely only be a confirmation and not additional buying. Either way, the excessive JPY buying would probably not support the yen for long, but it would show that the Japanese authorities are willing to act.
โบ Our pending order is unlikely to be triggered.

BUY NOW ๐ผ DAX (GER_40) ๐ฉ๐ช
โบ We see a mixed session with most stocks remaining in a sideways movement and a few outliers - Tesla in particular, but also Apple, which recorded strong gains in New York. However, Friday's top performer, Alphabet, is suffering profit-taking. We see all major US stock indices in the green, with the Nasdaq 100 leading the gains with +0.4 %.
โบIn contrast, the DAX closed in the red and is down -0.3% in after-hours trading. We buy here in the DAX (spot) at 18150 - 18160.
โบThe DAX was strongly impacted by Deutsche Bank's heavy losses. In the dispute with former Postbank shareholders over the appropriateness of the takeover price, the Cologne Higher Regional Court indicated that it might consider some of the claims to be justified in a later decision. The financial institution therefore announced the formation of a provision of โฌ1.3 billion for legal disputes. Not very impressive figures from Porsche also weighed on the DAX today.
โบ We also received good signals from German inflation today, which remained at 2.2%. Inflation failed to fall for the fourth time in a row as fuel prices rose and VAT on natural gas was also increased back to the standard rate of 19% on April 1. In view of current inflation in Germany and most Eurozone countries, a first rate cut in June remains realistic.

We expected a drop shortly after the NYSE open - which we then saw in gold. My original entry was a bit earlier - most of you have a better entry. We are now setting a tight TP (and an in-profit SL). Gold is likely to hold in the $2,310 - $2,350 range for a while longer - although we expect gold to rally later this week.
After the NYSE opened, we saw a short sell-off / increased volatility - as we expected. Our position is now well in profit. We continue to trade gold better than any other trader in the short term (with a success rate of over 92% in the last 60+ days).

We see mixed markets. Tesla's gigantic pre-market gains also drive the Nasdaq / S&P 500 upwards.
๐น Meta (- 1.0%) opens lower - slightly below our entry price. We expect Meta to remain in recovery mode after last week's heavy losses.
๐ธ Tesla (+13.3%) opens with dramatic pre-market gains. The electric car pioneer announced on Sunday that local Chinese authorities have lifted restrictions on its cars, fueling expectations that Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) driver assistance software will soon be available in the country. If you're still LONG (congrats!) - I'd close with a massive profit after the open (in the neighborhood of $190 - $192.50). Right now we are seeing very positive market sentiment around Tesla - we are on the lookout for a good re-entry.
โบ We are taking advantage of the volatility around the NYSE opening to get into Gold ($2,330 - $2,333 range). We see mixed markets today with mostly sideways movement. While market sentiment is mostly positive, investors remain cautious ahead of further earnings reports and the Fed's interest rate decision on Wednesday. Gold is benefiting from slightly lower yields and a weaker USD, as well as a market that remains divided on where equities are headed. Many investors continue to see equity valuations as high, especially for the big tech companies and the S&P 500 as a whole.

We saw German inflation data mixed but coming in-line with expectations. Headline inflation actually a bit cooler-than-expected, while core inflation came in slightly hotter-than-expectations. Reaction on the EUR was not that strong. We continue to see the EUR/USD in slight recovery mode but we will likely see some USD buying ahead of Wednesday's Fed interest decision / monetary policy outlook.
We will overall see little action today, with traders searching for guidance and overall thin trading volume (so far). Focus turns to Wednesday's Fed meeting.

๐ SmartTrader Insights: Monday Markets Wrap ๐
๐ Monday, April 29
โ๏ธ Strong US tech gains in the previous week offset inflation concerns; Global rally continues for now
โบ Stocks advanced modestly with the Stoxx 600 increasing by 0.3%, led by Royal Philips which jumped 37% after a favorable US lawsuit settlement. The movement reflects a broader optimism as Europe braces for the release of German CPI and Eurozone confidence indicators. Forecasts show German inflation rising slightly. These indicators will help show the regionโs economic resilience despite geopolitical uncertainties.
โบ US markets are buoyed by robust earnings from tech giants Microsoft and Alphabet, which have offset concerns over persistent inflation. S&P 500 futures edged up 0.2%, and 10 year treasury yields dipped to 4.64%. This week, all eyes are on the Federal Reserve's policy meeting, with traders adjusting expectations to predict fewer rate cuts for 2024, reflecting a more hawkish stance from the Fed compared to earlier projections.
โบ In Asia, the Hang Seng Index surged over 2% as it nears bull market territory, driven by gains in Chinese property stocks. This upsurge moves Hong Kong's benchmark closer to entering a technical bull market. Meanwhile, JPY saw a sharp rebound from a 34-year low amidst holiday-thinned trading and suspected market intervention by Japanese authorities. This has introduced a note of caution in a market otherwise optimistic about recovery prospects in the region.
โบ Commodity markets saw mixed movements. US Secretary of State Antony Blinkenโs efforts to negotiate a truce in Gaza influenced market sentiments, potentially easing tensions in the Middle East. Because of this, oil prices saw some headwinds, but WTI Crude oil prices continue to hover around $83.5/barrel. Gold prices stabilized at $2,340/oz. These developments come as investors also keep a wary eye on upcoming economic data releases that could impact commodity prices further.

At first glance it looks good, but it was not a particularly good day and a trading day of missed opportunities, especially as we anticipated market sentiment very well and should have been fully prepared for a stronger USD in the short term, higher yields, pressure on growth and a short-term deterioration in risk sentiment. After all, Amazon reported very good earnings, but concerns about the Fed's monetary policy outlook tomorrow are weighing on risk sentiment. Even if a nervous market is a good sentiment environment for gold - not if it stems from concerns about higher interest rates for longer. Gold remains bullish in the medium term, but could face more headwinds in the short term. So you can update your gold position or close it on the next spike (if you are still in). I don't expect the very hawkish Fed feared by the market tomorrow, but for now we see a risk averse sentiment. You can also set a TP for our second USD/JPY position (20 pips above current price).
Enjoy your evening,
Robert ๐ค
I'm going on a long flight from Asia back to Europe tomorrow - I'll try to be as active as possible and hope my Etihad flight has working internet this time - I'm afraid not though as it's a Boeing 777-300ER.
โ๏ธ EARLY LOOK: Amazon beats expectations across the line with strong growth in AWS & Ad Revenue; Overall revenue growth at 13% YoY
Amazon saw some swings post earnings - first extending selling from regular trading than rebounding - now about 3.5% up...
EPS: 98 cents vs. 83 cents expected
Revenue: $143.3 billion vs. $142.5 billion expected
(Revenue increased 13% from $127.4 billion YoY (Q1-2023))
Forecast:
Slightly disappointing Q2 forecast with revenue of $144 billion to $149 billion, representing growth of 7% to 11%. Analysts were expecting growth of 12% to $150.1 billion.
Overall impressive earnings report; good profitability (especially compared to Q1/2023). Especially the growth of AWS is very impressive and grew by a huge 17% (faster than Microsoft and Alphabet) - a sign of the strong demand for cloud services and AI. The market had only expected an increase of 11%, which shows that the numbers here were very much outperformed. As we had expected, Amazon's advertising business also saw a massive increase of 24% to $11.8bn, also exceeding expectations. The company's advertising business, which has been growing much faster than retail and fast-growing cloud computing, has become an increasingly important profit driver for Amazon. To me, this is a very strong earnings report as the cloud computing and advertising business has a much higher profit margin than Amazon's retail business. Additionally, Amazon seems to be ahead in cloud computing (which is critical for generative AI) with faster growth than Microsoft and Alphabet.

BUY NOW ๐ผ USD/JPY
โบ We are re-entering the USD/JPY and generally want to hold a LONG position in the USD in the short term and in view of the Fed's interest rate decision tomorrow.
โบ The US Employment Cost Index (ECI) for Q1 2024 rose by 1.2%, well above expectations for Q4 2023 of +0.9%. The ECI measures the change in hourly labor costs incurred by employers over time and thus provides an indication of the growth in total employee compensation. This is certainly not the key data for the Fed, but it is another data point that suggests that the decline in inflation that began this time last year has stalled in the first quarter of 2024. There is no evidence that inflation is slowing right now (in the US) if you look at past inflation data (whether CPI, PCE, wages or today's ECI data).
โบ At the same time, we are also seeing a slowdown in growth in the US (and a deterioration in sentiment) - to me this is still an indicator that current monetary policy is restrictive. I still expect rate cuts in 2024 and also believe that the Fed will still hint that rate cuts are coming. It could be that it takes a more hawkish tone - but the swap markets have already significantly reduced rate cut expectations.
โบ Nevertheless, I see investors becoming even more cautious, which will support the USD. The expectation that interest rates will remain high for longer makes the USD even more attractive against the CHF and JPY. The JPY would be weaker if market participants weren't worried about Tokyo intervention - I don't expect any intervention in the next 3-4 weeks, so the USD/JPY may rise further (or the JPY generally weaken again).

BUY AFTER* NYSE OPENED ๐ผ Apple (APPL) ๐บ๐ธ
Hot employment cost data has heightened concerns over a potentially more hawkish Fed stance tomorrow, leaving investors more cautious again. We will see another day of subdued trading activity, but unlike yesterday, possibly more on the negative side as a stronger USD and higher yields also weigh on market sentiment.
๐น Amazon (+0.7%) is outperforming Wall Street / Big Tech today as investors are optimistic that Amazon can benefit from another strong earnings report. Our position is deep in profit - we set an in-profit SL shortly after the opening ๐ @: 180.93 and may find a better re-entry if our SL is triggered. Raymond James classifies Amazon as a "Top Pick".
๐น Meta (- 0.4%) opens little changed, but will probably continue to hover near $430 for now. We still expect a rebound.
๐น Tesla (-2.9%) opens weaker after posting the strongest daily gains in over 3 years in the last session (+15.3%). Tesla remains volatile. We are working with a relatively tight SL and a not too wide TP: SL ๐ @: 184.47 / TP โ
@: 194.87. Bank of America again rates Tesla as a "BUY".
โบWe see a good sentiment environment for Apple - with investors becoming more cautious, especially on growth. The stronger USD is weighing on the iPhone inventor, but analysts remain optimistic ahead of a likely neutral earnings report. Expectations are not high, so there should probably be no major disappointment post earnings. I can envision a good performance in Apple services and margins. Apple has underperformed in recent sessions and is likely to see further dip buying - especially from institutional investors. Analysts, such as Oppenheimer today, continue to recommend buying Apple. Even though I don't like the stock in the medium term, we are currently seeing positive momentum and dip buying - even ahead of Apple's earnings report. We want to buy Apple after a likely small dip post NYSE opening - in the 172.50 - 173.00* range.

BUY NOW ๐ผ USD/JPY
โบ Our USD/JPY pending order was not triggered - and will not be triggered for the time being - at least until the Japanese authorities disclose whether or not intervention has actually (already) taken place. Many traders were expecting an intervention at 160 yen per dollar - and while we did indeed see a sharp dip at that level on Monday, it remains unclear what triggered it. It could have been heavy JPY buying by Japanese banks or other market participants selling in anticipation of an intervention at that level. We probably won't know for a while yet, as the official figures that would shed light on whether intervention actually took place will not be available until the end of May.
โบ We now see the USD/JPY near 157.000 (currently 156.900). We expect this level to be broken and the JPY to weaken again. The current moderate inflation in Japan, only gradual policy adjustments and the fact that the interest rate differential between the US and Japan will remain very high (for longer) remain a very negative mix for the JPY. In addition, the Japanese economy tends to benefit from a weak yen.
โบ I also continue to believe that any ad hoc intervention will be short-lived - and the Japanese authorities know this.
โบ While we expect further USD weakness in the medium term, I expect slight gains in the short term as investors worry about a hawkish move by the Fed / Jerome Powell tomorrow.
โ-
โบ We should therefore have open pending orders 400 - 500 pips below spot at all times (i.e. currently around 151,900 - 152,900 - at spot price 156,900) to absorb this short term intervention move. Any dip will come back quickly:

โ๏ธ European stocks edge lower amid auto sector struggles & concerns about hawkish Fed stance
โบ Markets in Europe declined slightly today, with the Stoxx 600 index dropping 0.3%. This was due to major car manufacturers such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis facing downturns due to poor earnings reports. In contrast, HSBC saw a rise exceeding 2% despite a dip in profits and the unexpected exit of its CEO. Positive economic data, however, provided a silver lining, with Germany reporting a slight 0.2% GDP growth for Q1 2024, better than the expected 0.1%, and France, Italy and Spain also exceeding GDP growth expectations. This complex mix reflects a cautious optimism tempered by sector-specific challenges.
โบ In the United States, market sentiment was restrained with S&P 500 futures showing little change as investors brace for the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy decision. Despite a general uptrend in earnings, with over 80% of companies beating expectations, the broader market remains wary of prolonged high interest rates. The anticipation surrounding the Fed press conference with Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, is keeping the market on tenterhooks and could have an impact on future interest rate adjustments. Earnings season also continues, as Amazon's earnings figures will be published later today. AMD will also be closely watched.
โบ Asian markets ended on a higher note, driven by a rebound in semiconductor profitability which boosted stocks like Samsung, rising up to 2.4% in Seoul. Equity markets in Japan and Hong Kong climbed, while Chinese shares showed mixed responses despite positive factory activity data, signaling a cautious but ongoing economic recovery in the region. We saw a small surge in the JPY, which suggests possible government intervention to stabilize the currency, calming some fears of unchecked depreciation.
โบ Commodity markets saw oil holding its ground after a significant drop, as talks of a potential cease-fire in the Middle East might reduce the geopolitical risk premium. WTI Crude oil dipped yesterday and stabilized at $82.6/barrel. Meanwhile, gold prices dipped by 1% to currently $2,312/oz. According to our chief analyst Robert Lindner, the main reason for the current gold sell-off are concerns about a more hawkish stance by the Fed tomorrow.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Tesla (TSLA) ๐บ๐ธ
โ ๏ธ Volatile
โบ We went LONG into Tesla on Friday, but closed too early with a profit (many of you stayed LONG). Of course, Tesla was not expected to rise so much today - it will be the best day in more than three years for Tesla as the electric car pioneer took a big step closer to launching its driver assistance technology, Full Self-Driving (FSD), in China - the world's most important car market.
โบ Tesla said on Sunday that local Chinese authorities have lifted restrictions on its cars after they met the country's data security requirements. This drastically increases the likelihood that Tesla's FSD will soon be available in the country.
โบ Tesla is in a very bullish, sentiment-driven momentum anyway. Even though today's 15% price increase seems huge, Tesla has performed disastrously this year. The upside will continue and Tesla is likely to test/break through the $200.00 level as early as tomorrow, especially if more news emerges as to when Tesla might actually launch its FSD software in China.
โบ Additionally, Tesla has also apparently struck a deal with Baidu that gives Musk's company access to the Chinese internet giant's mapping and navigation technology for Tesla's FSD feature.
โบ I now expect more optimistic analyst opinions and that the positive momentum will continue. We can now enter at below ~$193 or about 2% below today's high. There will also be extended hype buying.

We are securing large profits with our AUD/JPY. We see the pair back in recovery mode after rising expectations that Japan has already intervened to support the JPY. The Japanese Ministry of Finance is expected to release its market intervention statistics tomorrow.
As long as interest rates are not raised, there is no chance that the JPY will recover significantly. The interest rate and yield differential between the Bank of Japan / Japanese bonds and other (Western) central banks / bonds is still very large and will largely remain so for the time being.

โ ๏ธ Volatile
โบ Amazon opened ~2% higher but then fell into negative territory. We are buying this mini dip ahead of Amazon's earnings report tomorrow (after market closing). Amazon has significantly exceeded expectations in recent quarters and will likely continue to see strong growth in Amazon Web Services (in the 12 - 14% YoY range) - albeit probably a bit slower than Microsoft's very impressive Azure business recently.
โบ Google has seen strong growth in advertising and we are likely to see a similar trend with Amazon. When Meta and Alphabet reported historically strong earnings - more than 80% of the time Amazon delivered. In recent months, Amazon has seen stronger (percentage) growth in digital advertising than Google and Meta - meaning that Alphabet's rising ad revenue could mean that Amazon has also been able to further accelerate ad revenue resulting in strong overall revenue.
โบ One concern could be Amazon's increased spending plans after the company has been very successful in cutting costs recently. I still expect profit margins to be close to recent highs in the 7.6% - 8% range.
โบ We are mainly trading optimism BEFORE the earnings report here - I expect gains before Amazon reports tomorrow evening

๐ ROBโS DAILY UPDATE ๐
โผ๏ธ Sentiment remains cautiously positive; Busy week of earnings + Fed policy meeting
Stock prices continued to be supported by earnings report optimism as traders looked ahead to a busy week of corporate results and the Fed meeting on Wednesday. The JPY made strong temporary gains as Japanese authorities likely intervened after it fell to its lowest level in 34 years. Japanese markets were closed on Monday for a public holiday, resulting in overall thin trading during Asian hours. We are also seeing generally muted market movement as investors await Amazon's earnings report and the Fed's upcoming interest rate decision on Wednesday.
With Amazon (Tuesday) and Apple (Thursday) reports due in the coming days, investors are hoping for further evidence that earnings from big tech companies can continue to drive equity markets. S&P 500 futures rose 0.3% on Monday. Tesla rose more than 9% in premarket trading after the company cleared hurdles to launch its driver assistance system in China.
Yields on US government bonds continue to fall and the USD is also weakening. However, the current USD correction could be short-lived as some investors are worried about possible hawkish comments from Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. US inflation shows little sign of moving lower - supported by a strong US labor market / wage inflation.
Oil prices have fallen slightly as US officials push for a peace deal between Israel and Hamas that would ease geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Stocks in Europe are also mostly up, gaining 47% after the company reached a lower-than-expected settlement in the U.S. over compensation payments in the Royal Philips connection with faulty sleep apnea devices. Deutsche Bank falls 6% after Postbank faces another round of litigation
So far we have seen another strong earnings season with around 80-81% of companies beating expectations. We expect muted moves today, but investors remain cautiously optimistic for now as Wall Street continued to make modest gains thanks to big tech companies.

BUY NOW ๐ผ AUD/JPY
โบ We are seeing massive volatility in the JPY today after thin trading saw the JPY briefly reach 160 against the USD for the first time since 1990 and Japanese markets were also closed today for a public holiday.
โบ Japan's Ministry of Finance is expected to release its market intervention statistics for the period from March 28 to April 26 on Tuesday. Some investors believe that interventions have been increased and that further measures will be announced.
โบ The Japanese authorities have repeatedly warned of "excessive" movements in the yen, but have made no official announcements to support the currency. Some market observers had suspected that the authorities would intervene at a rate of 155, but the yen slipped above this level last week.
โบ The bigger problem would be excessive volatility rather than an actually gradually weakening JPY. With the Bank of Japan continuing to keep interest rates extremely low and Japanese bond yields low while Japanese inflation remains close to 2.0%, it is understandable that we see continued JPY weakness. The recent weaker JPY has had a positive impact on the performance of Japanese equities.
โบ We are buying the sharp fall in AUD/JPY and expect a slight recovery. Australian inflation (reported last week) was higher than expected. Commodity prices have performed strongly in recent weeks. We generally see a positive risk sentiment. You can work with a pending order and enter in the range 102.150 - 102.250.

We missed some potential overnight gains - especially with Alphabet (we were expecting a very strong earnings report), but we traded today's markets extremely well, also in combination with the tricky US PCE data and strong overnight swings. Our stock picking was phenomenal - especially since we didn't trade the big pre-market winners. Congratulations!
I would have loved to have taken GM into the weekend - but we can likely find a similar/better re-entry early next week.
Enjoy your weekend,
Your Robert ๐ค
