โบ The markets in the US are stagnating - although all indices have risen after the lows in overnight trading, when the disappointing sales forecast from chip company Micron (which was "only" in line with analysts' expectations) caused Micron shares to plummet by up to 10 % and dragged down a number of mega-cap companies, including Nvidia. Micron is trading 5.5 % lower pre-market and Nvidia is also down again (-1.5 %).
โบ We see Europe (especially the French CAC) lower overall in the run-up to the French elections on Sunday. Markets in Asia also closed lower today.
โบ Yields continue to rise ahead of a raft of US economic data due to be released in an hour. Initial jobless claims are expected to continue to rise slightly, which is seen as support for potential Fed rate cuts - slightly rising claims would therefore be positive for equity / risk sentiment. Durable goods orders, which measure new orders received by US manufacturers of durable goods such as machinery and equipment, are expected to fall by 0.6% after rising by 0.6% in the previous month. While markets will react to the data, the focus remains on tomorrow's US PCE data and generally hawkish comments from Fed officials.
โบ We can now position SHORT in the Nasdaq (range 19760 - 19800*) or work with a pending order. Micron's reaction to a rather disappointing outlook highlights the risks if Wall Street relies on AI chipmakers to fuel the stock rally. We see poor market breadth in tech stocks.

After the recent move away from the tech sector, there was a reversal of movement yesterday, with Nvidia rallying very strongly yesterday (up to 7%) and pushing money back into the tech high flyers that still completely dominate Wall Street. We are now seeing more mixed markets - but 10 out of 11 S&P sectors are down.
We are seeing more demand for defensive stocks again. We made an excellent choice with United Health and are securing profits.
Our Tesla position is still out of the money. Tesla benefited significantly from a Stifel "BUY" rating. We expect profit taking in the last two hours of trading in New York.

Markets moved in the opposite direction to the last three days today, with a sharp rebound in tech and a rotation back into growth stocks, led by a 7% rebound in Nvidia (which also pushed our Nasdaq 100 into the money, but weighed on our FTSE 100 and caused losses in the more defensive Dow Jones). We are setting a TP for our FTSE. Overall, we see the upward momentum still intact. FedEx, which is seen as a strong barometer for economic growth, jumped around 15% after the close after the logistics giant issued a positive forecast. This will further support the currently improved risk sentiment and give cyclical stocks a further boost.

โบ Some central banks have already started the monetary easing phase, including the Bank of Canada. The Swiss National Bank is already further advanced and has already cut rates twice from a much lower level (unlike most Western economies). We see a trend towards cautious positioning by central banks, including the Bank of England, the Fed and probably the Bank of Canada again in the near future, which means that monetary policy divergence will remain large for longer compared to the SNB (and Bank of Japan).
โบ After recent signs of an almost universal cooling of Canadian inflation since the beginning of the year, the May figures were much hotter than expected. Annual inflation rose to 2.9% in May, up from 2.7% the previous month (and up from the expected 2.6% - so there was a reacceleration in inflation - as opposed to further disinflation expected). Core inflation, which is closely monitored by the central bank, rose again for the first time in five months (from 1.6 % to 1.8 % and even more obviously on a monthly basis: 0.6 % compared to 0.2 % in April and 0.2 % expected).
โบ In view of the very hot readings, the reaction of the CAD is relatively mild - which is partly due to a slightly stronger USD today, which weighs on commodity prices.
โบ We expect the positive momentum in CAD/CHF to continue, as a further rate cut by the BoC in July now seems very unlikely. We continue to see bullish energy prices and improved risk sentiment will also give the CAD a tailwind.
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 1.25 - 1.40 (125% - 140%) when trading CAD/CHF.

Mixed US economic data. Initial jobless claims at 233K are close to expectations (236K expected), but below last week's data (239K) with signs of a still tight labor market. Durable Goods Orders are slightly above expectations and not declining, but still slightly positive (+0.1% MoM). GDP growth in line with expectations.
Core PCE at 3.7% QoQ, slightly above the expected 3.6% and well above the previous quarter's 2% - these are the first signs of stubborn inflation, which could affect risk sentiment ahead of tomorrow's PCE data (MoM / YoY).
The overall picture of the US economy is positive - this supports commodities but could be a problem for the Fed to cut rates.
We hedge our CAD/CHF with a tight SL & TP. Alternatively, we close (with profit) as the lower rate cut expectations also have a negative impact on commodity prices (and thus the CAD) (= mixed data).

โ๏ธ European stocks flat ahead of French Elections; US futures fall on Micron outlook & ongoing chip sector profit taking
โบ European stocks are little changed with the Stoxx 600 trading flat although seeing some early gains then losing them again - similar to yesterday's movement. Traders are in a holding pattern ahead of Sundayโs French elections. Fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz plummeted over 14% after missing profit and sales estimates. GSK also declined following a regulatory setback for its RSV vaccine. Spain's retail sales fell by 0.6% in May 2024 compared to the previous month but increased by 0.2% year-on-year. Eurozone sentiment data will be released at 09:00 GMT+0.
โบ US equity futures fell as Micronโs disappointing sales outlook weighed on tech stocks, despite having a decent quarterly report. Investors are cautious ahead of key economic data releases, including jobless claims, durable goods orders, and pending home sales, as well as the PCE inflation report (Friday). Treasury yields held steady, and the USD hovered near an eight-month high, reflecting expectations for a "higher for longer" interest rate stance by the Federal Reserve.
โบ Asian markets mostly declined, with the MSCI Asia Pacific gauge on track for its first loss in three days. Japanโs Nikkei 225 dropped 0.87%, affected by the JPYโs depreciation yesterday to a 38-year low against the USD. The JPY partially recovered after hitting 160.87 per dollar, following intervention warnings from Japanese authorities. Chinese markets fell amid caution ahead of PMI data and ongoing chip tensions with the U.S. The MSCI China Index is nearing a technical correction, dropping as much as 2%.
โบ Oil prices traded within a narrow range, holding steady despite supply disruption fears due to Middle Eastern tensions and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. WTI Crude oil is currently trading around $81/barrel. Gold steadied after a two-day decline, finding support below $2,300/oz as predicted by our Chief Analyst Robert Lindner. Gold saw recently profit taking and fundamental headwinds due to rising yields.

A very chaotic market dominated by volatility in the US tech sector (especially Nvidia / semiconductor stocks). There are increasing signs of further profit taking / continued cautious trading and yields are also rising (causing gold to fall back below $2,300) on concerns that the Fed will be slow to cut rates and upcoming PCE data does not confirm continued disinflation. We also see heavy selling in Micron despite a solid quarterly report - it shows how much positive news / data is already priced into the current rally and shows downside potential.

โบ We are seeing poor market breadth in the tech sector / overall on the NYSE - most stocks (and sectors) are trading in the red. Apple is still up almost +2% but has seen some profit taking alongside other (tech) stocks.
โบ We continue to see Apple as attractive and benefit from a generally cautious market, but generally optimistic investors about Big Tech / AI. Apple may be the company that can monetize AI integrations better than any other company, thanks to more than 1.3 billion Apple iPhone users and more than 2 billion active Apple devices.
โบ We re-enter Apple well below our triggered TP (213.52) (range 212.50 - 213.00).
โบ We also expect analysts to remain optimistic for Apple - alone today Apple received two "BUY" ratings: Rosenblatt has upgraded Apple to "Buy" from "Neutral" and increased its price target to $260 per share, citing the company's privacy-focused AI initiatives. Bank of America has reiterated its call of "Buy" with a price target of (only) $230, arguing that Appleโs move to integrate AI into its operating system and giving third-party developers access to its features could drive profit increases in its services segment - thus Bank of America analysts use the same argument as we did yesterday in our analysis.

We close our gold position slightly in profit or work with a tight TP. We see yields moving to session highs towards the end of regular trading, which will keep the USD elevated and weighs on non-yielding gold.
We may find a better re-entry.

โบ We are getting back into gold. While yields rose slightly, they are stabilizing at around +7 basis points for today. Equity prices also rose slightly, causing the gold price to fall back below $2,300 - but we expect more headwinds in the second half of trading. We are re-entering below our SL: range $2,296 - $2,230.
โบ We continue to see support for gold below the key $2,300 level. A stronger USD is weighing on gold, as are concerns about a Fed that is reluctant to cut interest rates due to inflation fears.
โบ Gold underperforms other precious metals (platinum even up 2.7 % / silver almost flat for today).
โบ We are working with a tight SL.

Not good timing today in a volatile market. We secure profits with Apple. We see that Tesla after initial gains with resistance at $193.00. We expect further selling during the day - so we are securing our Apple position here. On Apple we can count on.
I don't have a good entry, you probably have a better entry price.
If you are still LONG in the DAX - close 18155 - 18180 in profit now. We also expect sales to come back in Europe, while there is probably little tailwind in New York as only the tech industry can keep Wall Street stable at the moment.

We see growing concerns that the Fed may be very reluctant to cut rates - supported by hot inflation reports from Canada (yesterday) and Australia (today). The rather dovish comments from the ECB, which led to a short-term bounce, have only strengthened hopes for rate cuts in the short term. We also see signs that the rally in equities, led by Nvidia yesterday, is fading and demand for safer assets is rising again - with bonds taking the lion's share, also leading to higher yields (weighing on gold) and a still strong USD.
๐น The Dow Jones (- 0.2 %) is down slightly, but could benefit from investors turning back to more defensive stocks today after being invested in growth/chip stocks yesterday. However, we are working with a narrow SL, as sentiment in Europe has also deteriorated (also in view of the elections in France). We are limiting potential losses with our Dow Jones SL ๐ @: 39028.90
๐น Chevron (+0.2%) opens slightly higher and could benefit from a possible rotation out of the tech sector. We maintain our tight TP and continue to see oil prices supported.
๐น Qualcomm (- 0.4%) likely opens lower as gains in the chip sector fade. Nvidia rose more than 2% in early pre-market trading but is now trading lower despite another positive analyst assessment (from Citi). We set a tight SL, as a possible return of profit-taking in the chip sector will also lead to further short-term losses for Qualcomm SL ๐ @: 199.89.
โบ We see higher yields (and a stronger USD) weighing on risk sentiment and the growth sector. We are therefore positioning SHORT in the Nasdaq near the flat territory (19700 - 19740) and expect a return of profit taking in the tech / big tech sector - with probably only Apple performing positively. Strong earnings from Micron (after market close) could boost chip stocks - but we see concerns about high valuations returning.
โบ We are selling (VIP ONLY) - which continues to see weak / even declining sales and is also facing more domestic competition with (VIP ONLY) . The (VIP ONLY) is getting tougher, with falling sales/revenues and (VIP ONLY) . (VIP ONLY) continues to lose market share. (VIP ONLY) benefits from a (VIP ONLY) which may lead to early gains but we believe the tailwinds will not last for (VIP ONLY) ...
โบ We expect stronger demand for defensive / value stocks and are going LONG in (VIP ONLY) . We are also looking for a good entry point into Apple - which as a more defensive tech stock is again benefiting from the general selloff in growth. We are looking to enter Apple in the $210 - $210.50 range. Apple is also benefiting from two positive analyst reports today (Bank of America / Rosenblatt).

โ๏ธ European stocks climb amid ECB rate cut hints & ongoing tech rebound
โบ European stocks opened higher as investor sentiment was buoyed by hints of further rate cuts from the European Central Bank. The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.3%, led by the tech sector, following a rebound in Nvidia shares. Deutsche Post saw a 3% gain after FedEx's strong profit forecast. Investors' expectations that the ECB will ease its monetary policy twice this year are reasonable, according to Governing Council member Olli Rehn, but officials should not dampen economic activity too much. Germanyโs consumer confidence dropped to -21.80 points for July, indicating ongoing economic concerns despite the positive market movement.
โบ US equity futures edged higher extending yesterday's gains, suggesting continued momentum in Wall Streetโs tech-driven rally, particularly after Nvidia's 7% rebound on Tuesday. FedEx is also trading 13% higher in pre-market trading due to strong earnings and profit forecasts. The 10-year Treasury yield remained steady at 4.26%, and the USD held its ground. Investors are now looking ahead to the PCE price index release on Friday for further insights into the Federal Reserve's rate cut trajectory.
โบ Asian markets presented a mixed picture. Japanese and Hong Kong indices rose (bot tech heavy), while Australian stocks declined. Japanโs equities continues to benefit from a weak JPY, which remains near the critical level of 160 per USD, raising concerns of potential government intervention. China's 10-year bond yield fell to a two-decade low as investors sought safety in fixed-income securities amid a slowing economy. Australia's inflation rate surged to 4.0% in May, the highest in six months, prompting fears of delayed interest rate cuts and causing the S&P/ASX 200 to drop by 0.62%. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions heightened as South Korea reported a failed ballistic missile launch by North Korea.
โบ In commodities, oil prices rose to $81.3/barrel, ahead of a U.S. government report on crude inventories and fuel demand, following mixed industry data. Gold prices dipped slightly to $2,316/oz, influenced by a slight uptick in the USD , concerns over potential hawkish signals from the Fed and the strong rebound in stocks which decreased safe haven demand.

The gold price fell by 0.4% today due to a stronger USD and concerns about further signs of a hawkish Fed. Today's very hot Canadian inflation data also reinforced concerns that disinflation may have come to a halt in the US as well. We expect a positive development of the gold price in Asian trading, but are now setting a tight SL. We are also setting a TP2 for our re-entry and a broader TP (TP1) for our initial entry.

BUY NOW ๐ผ Qualcomm (QCOM) ๐บ๐ธ
โบ While I wouldn't say it's too late to get in on Nvidia's current rebound, the AI chip giant remains very volatile. We're likely to find a better entry price than after today's near 7% rise - even if this has turned sentiment on Nvidia from panic selling back to fresh FOMO buying in the hope of the next bounce higher.
โบ The focus on Nvidia meant that the other heavily sold chip stocks - notably mobile AI chip leader Qualcomm - were unloved today and are still trading virtually unchanged after recent very heavy losses.
โบ Qualcomm remains a bit of the hidden champion as Nvidia's AI server chips and monopoly margins take most of the limelight. However, it will be the AI-enabled chips for cell phones that will drive the use of AI in every day's life. Qualcomm's new generation of AI chips, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and8s Gen 3 platforms, are pioneering the smartphone industry by processing up to 10 billion parameters for generative AI models directly on the mobile device.
โบ Qualcomm is ahead of the game here - and although Apple makes its own chips, the market share of non-iPhone smartphones continues to grow - most of them powered by Qualcomm chips - soon all the more to enable AI features. Apple has also extended its own contracts with Qualcomm to ensure it has the necessary components for its future smartphone releases while continuing to develop its technology. The multi-year contract provides for the supply of Snapdragon 5G modem RF systems for Apple's smartphones until 2026 - I think it's likely that Apple will extend this partnership further and focus on other optimizations instead - especially in the Apple Services area.
โบ We expect Qualcomm to rebound soon as well and can continue to enter at the same price as yesterday (range 201.00 - 201.50).
๐ฃ๏ธ Tip: Multiply your usual trade size by ~ 250 - 280 (25,000% - 28,000%) when trading Qualcomm (QCOM).
